It's worth keeping mind that Babymetal was never expected to become the phenomenon that it turned into. At the time it was created, Babymetal was just the juon-bu (heavy music club) subgroup of an idol group that was only expected to last the three years that Suzuka would be in Sakura Gakuin. It was a crackpot idea of one producer who wanted to breathe life back into metal in Japan, who convinced his bosses to let him try out his crazy idea with a side project using some members of an existing idol group. I'm sure that no-one involved could ever have anticipated that Babymetal would eclipse and outlast SG and achieve global fame.
Babymetal's tremendous success is a combination of talent, skill, massive amounts of hard work, and a healthy dollop of good luck along the way; their real story is a better tale than most fictional stories about successful bands.

    5:00 Reaction start.
Jumping straight to Metal Galaxy from 2019 and into one of the more mature side they're showing in that album full of surprise.
With the pyrotechnics Western Kami Band intro, this live song is pure fire.🔥
And then going back where everything started, that's a wild set ride. Doki Doki Morning surprised everyone performed once again this year at Makuhari Messe 2023, is part of their kawaii metal roots and they don't wanna leave behind whenever is possible. They're singing about waking up for going to the school and worried about makeup, just like any other metal song.😜
Shout-out to baby-bones and everything they did putting the same amount of energy in the stage.
Thanks for sharing this and see you next time 🦊🤘🔥

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS : BABYMETAL's first performances for a while were in very small venues for small music festivals in small warehouses and food courts in front of 100-250 people, mostly made up of their friends, relatives, and friends/relatives of friends and other Sakura Gakuin members. They originally performed to a backing track and no band since they had ZERO budget for that. While it is correct that they were put together, the fact is that they were originally a "club" or subgroup of the school girl themed idol group Sakura Gakuin, and was really a side project of Kobametal, who is still their producer. They had no budget from the label to work with since who would put money into 3 girls singing pop songs to metal music and no following? Metal music in Japan at the time was not a money making genre! In the music video for Doki Doki Morning, the girls borrowed their clothes from friends! If I remember correctly, their first video didn't get made until 2-3 years after they started and after they unexpected built a large growing following!🤘🦊🤘

Great reactions again. That was the Kami band of the West (American musicians - Chris Kelly, CJ Masciantonio, Clint Tustin and Anthony Barone) with the intro for 'Kagerou'.
The song debuted in 2018, but at that time Su-metal was performing it as a solo and we didn't know the song title - a set list was overseen with it listed as 'Tattoo'.
Doki doki is onomatopoeic for a fast or excited heart beat. The song is about a girl waking up late and rushing to get ready for an exciting day at school with all her friends, worrying what lip gloss to wear, how to get her fringe (bangs) straight etc ... all the traditional death metal themes.
As you have been told, they did not come out of the gates with the big productions etc. They were just one of several sub-units (each with about 3 girls) within Sakura Gakuin. Each sub-unit had a theme and its own related song and dance routines (there was a cooking club, tennis club, reporters club, science club, baton club and more - BABYMETAL was simply the heavy music club). BABYMETAL was the only club not provided with the budget to even get stage costumes because it made no commercial sense to the talent agency Amuse who had set Sakura Gakuin up to train and coach about a dozen of the most talented girls aged 10 to 15 on their books in all aspects of entertainment (singing, dancing, acting, modelling, writing, stage management etc) with a view to them finding how they would progress their careers after leaving school.
BABYMETAL was the brain child of just one producer, Kei Kobayashi, and he was inspired to try his experiment fusing metal with JPop aesthetics after being impressed by Su when he saw her with her previous group - he was so impressed that he, as a lifelong metalhead, saw her potential to front a metal band.
BABYMETAl was expected to be nothing more than a short lived and failed experiment - their success was entirely unexpected and only after they had, against all the odds, found an audience nobody knew would exist, did Amuse start to take an interest and allowed them to play a couple of shows outside of the Sakura Gakuin shows and Idol festivals in shopping malls, in the food court at a festival, a tiny venue with a 150 capacity and so on.
When they seemed to work Amuse finally began to provide the budget for them to branch out even further, to hire session musicians to play a couple of festivals and the encores in a couple more solo shows.
These also went well, so when Su-metal was 15 and due to graduate from Sakura Gakuin BABYMETAL also separated to go with her and to become an independent band in their own right ... and then the funding started to come in greater amounts to allow Kobayashi to set up the increasingly impressive productions.
They had to prove themselves just as much as any garage band and they had to put their hearts and souls into the project and to work harder than any 12 - 15 year olds I've ever known to get to the top of the tree where they are now.

There‘s always this fascinating juxtaposition with BABYMETAL, and this even extends to the experience of watching these two videos in sequence: On one hand, it’s amazing how far they have come and how much they have grown, but on the other hand it’s also baffling how much they have stayed the same. The basic concept is still the same, and it’s still as fresh as it was 12 years ago. It’s quite phenomenal.

This songs came before the "TRILOGY OF LIGHTS".
Kagerou (Tattoo) or “Heat haze” is about someone who was at first suspicious about her partner, then begins burning up in anger by the end of the song. This song uses a ton of Japanese onomatopoeia, which is why it sounds fairly repetitive. The Band is the Western Kami Band who tour with Babymetal for their US 🇺🇸 Tour and mostly European Tour and equally good as the original Kami Band.
Kagerou is a moody song by BABYMETAL with a tempo of 97 BPM. It can also be used double-time at 194 BPM.The track runs 3 minutes and 31 seconds long with a G♯/A♭ key and a major mode. It has high energy and is some what danceable with a time signature of 4 beats per bar.

    Anthony Barone - drums (2019-present).

    Doki Doki Morning:-
"Doki Doki Morning" (ド・キ・ド・キ☆モーニング, Doki Doki Mōningu, lit. "Heart-Pounding Morning", stylized as "Doki Doki ☆ Morning" and formerly "Do・Ki・Do・Ki ☆ Morning") is a song by the Japanese heavy metal band Babymetal. The song was released in Japan as an independent DVD single on October 22, 2011, serving as the first single off the debut album Babymetal.
    Background and release
The song introduced all three members to heavy metal music; Nakamoto commenting how she had never heard such musical heaviness before, while Mizuno initially had more interest in dancing to the music rather than singing. During song production, the signature Kitsune hand gesture (similar to the sign of the horns) was formed. Vocals for the song were recorded on October 30, 2010. The song's first release was in the Sakura Gakuin album Sakura Gakuin 2010 Nendo: Message, released on April 27, 2011, as part of the Juonbu ("heavy music") sub-unit.
The song was later announced as a limited-edition DVD single on October 12, 2011, and later released also as a standard digital download available on October 22 and 23, 2011 for pre-sale at the Sakura Gakuin Festival ☆ 2011 held at Mt. Rainier Hall "Shibuya Pleasure Pleasure", and later sold in limited quantities on ASmart, Amazon, Tower Records Online, and Tower Records Shinjuku starting October 24. The limited edition included a DVD with the "Doki Doki ☆ Morning" music video and a cut of the original video focusing on the choreography for live performances of the song, and a towel embossed with either the logo of the band or the label Juonbu Records. The single was later released as a CD single on April 6, 2012, packaged with a T-shirt.
The song was later released as a promotional single in the United Kingdom on December 13, 2015.
    Composition:-
The song has a "modern heaviness" sound in its music, with dark, atmospheric instrumentals that reverse into a catchier and brighter melody with lyrics such as "Rin rin rin! Ohayō, wake up" (Ring ring ring! Good morning, wake up). Kikuchi noted how the tone of the song was directly opposite to Japanese kei-on music (light music); as a result, the band formed under the label Jūonbu (heavy music club) to signify the contrast. Nakamoto, whose vocals were recorded separately from those of Mizuno and Kikuchi, needed to speak quickly but clearly in the verses.
    Live performances:-
The song premiered at the Sakura Gakuin concert Sakura Gakuin Festival ☆ 2010 at the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No. 1 on November 28, 2010. Regarding the group's first performance of the song, Su-metal explained, "What I remember clearly was during the interlude […] we all pretend to fall to the ground...I was afraid that people would just laugh at us and it would be embarrassing, but their reaction made me feel happy and at that time I thought this is who Su-metal is, this is what Babymetal is."

One of the most common critique - which I myself was guilty before - is that Babymetal is not worthy of adulation because they are/started as a "manufactured idol group". The connotation being that these girls did not "earn" their heavy metal stripes because they did not go through what we Westerners consider as the standard rites of passage of musical instruments-playing dudes/gals starving early on, practicing day in day out in their garage, waiting to book a set in a local pub where they somehow got their break after getting "discovered" or making connections with other bands, who eventually introduced them to the right music executives . This narrative while applicable to most Western rock/metal groups just simply does not apply to Babymetal. Yes the girls were "manufactured" but the path they went through was just as hard if not worse than what typical metal bands in the West would go through. Just imagine practicing/playing before cafeterias, shopping malls, Comic conventions and all sorts of non-musical venues where very few of the audience if at all, have ever heard and seen a choreographed metal-pop music mash up? How freaking insane is that?! The thought of being ridiculed must be overwhelming..and the pressure these girls had to endure, at what? 12-14 yrs old was nothing like most of us have ever experienced. Just let that sit for a moment. You go perform Doki Doki and the routine requires you to fall down the floor like an idiot and the audience laugh their asses off like they do not take you seriously as performers and yet you still had to get up and finish the remaining half of the song..while dancing! This mortifying experience related by Su when they first had to go around promoting their weird act in cafeterias, SG rehearsals and such was both gut-wrenching and enlightening for me. I realized then that these girls had ice running in their veins, steel cojones and outright god-level professionalism even as young teenagers. If that is not "metal" I do not know what is...
As I keep saying in many comments section, the Babymetal ladies could be manufactured pop idols (when they started), but by the time they were 14 they had more heavy metal street creds in their frilly red tutus than perhaps all of us at that same age could dream of. And maybe will ever achieve in our entire lives.

Julius, this is a great comment. Babymetal did play food courts, cafeterias and comic conventions early on; the three girls were hardened in the forge of disinterested and dismissive audiences. However, this early embarrassment built their character to a point where they were able to handle the ridicule and outright abuse from certain parts of the metal community. The gatekeepers and detractors didn't realize that Babymetal had seen this all before and by the time they broke internationally, it was water off a duck's back to them. Babymetal's answer to their critics was to work harder.

Way too many of these comments are nonsense. When were they performing in shopping mall? Yui and Moa were in Sakura Gakuin for 4 years, performing in their shows. "Megitsune" was when Su was 15 yo. Also they went to Korea as Metallica's opening band, I believe before the Legend of 1997 concert. While was in Dec 2013 with an audience of 20,000. "Gimme Chocolate" was released in 2014, before Sonisphere. It made a big WTF splash in Europe.
They have have been with the same producer from day 1, Kobametal and under contract to the Amuse Talent Agency, since 2010. Also I believe in 2012 they traveled to Singapore for an Anime festival, and they were a huge hit. There is a video.
They did work hard, they were full time students. All 3 graduated from full time High School with Moa a straight A student. Practice and rehearsal was after school, until 8 pm (Japanese Law) and then full days on the weekend. The weekend was also when they performed in the Sakura Gakuin Shows.
They were popular, it was primarily in the west where the "hate' and insults came from. They were/are perfect for Japan. You would understand that if had even the remoteist idea of what main stream Japanese Jpop is and who are the performers.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。What a gap between two songs! ◆ For "Kagerou" : This is a compilation from 3 concerts (2 in Japan + 1 in California). Western Kami Band is great. Anthony Barone is my favorite drummer now as well as Hideki. Su is singing about jealousy against someone using a metaphor of heat haze, "Kagerou". The hash emotion is shimmering from her inner blaze, and it seems to me that the emotion will not erupt but turn into magma deep down. It's scary😱 . This is the song featuring BM's heavy, dark and a little bit sultry side. The girls have grown up into ladies now without doubt.
◆ For "Doki Doki Morning" : The girls are singing about a school girl who overslept in the morning and got up quickly and dressed in haste asking repeatedly what time it was now. "Doki Doki" signifies sound of fast heartbeat. The girl also got excited looking forward to what was going to happen today at her school and in her future as well. Su and Moa are matured and no longer school girls, but they revived this song since December 2020 mimicking their own childhood voices and lovable moves. Every audience (including me) at venues became happy! ヽ(^o^)丿

And another great double feature, thanks!
I admit not paying much attention at first to "Kagerou" when it first came out. I'm not much into hard rock, to be honest. But one day I was listening to the Legend Metal Galaxy live album in the car, driving to work and probably quite sleepy. And those solos from the intro came out and suddenly the song got all my attention. Specially Barone's drum solo ending with a blastbeat using his signature technique: the gravity blast. That day I discovered Barone and the rest of the kamis from the west. And I have to say they are incredible.
"Doki Doki Morning" represents their humble origins and a performance like this is just perfect to realize their evolution. It's actually crazy if you think about it. To develop Koba's idea was certainly a risky gamble, unpredictable business. And he won against all odds. This kind of things only happens in Japan.
    Until next time!

Really enjoying your reactions to Babymetal and hope you continue the reactions after the week of Babymetal. I think if I remember correctly Su was 12 and Yui and Moa were 10 in this song, so yea they were little babies lol. It's absolutely fascinating watching them grow up and get better and better. You got to see Su dance as a 12 year old, all kind of clumsily (although you don't see it in the actual concert they performed there, you probably DID noticed it when she was rehearsing with Yui and Moa. Su was kind of famous for her awkward dancing as I think she was kind of uncomfortable with her body as it was gangly. But it was super cute and you could always EASILY find Su during the dances with the rest of the Sakura Gakuin girls. Maybe eventually you'll see what I'm talking about lol
In any event, to kind of answer your question, the whole band was made around Su. She is the focal point. EVERYTHING was created around her. When one of her instructors heard her singing he wanted to pull an experiment and create a metal group that meshed metal with JPop. Nobody thought it would work, but they allowed him to try. They didn't give him any money for funding however, so the early costumes were just clothes the girls had and/or borrowed from home and other classmates/teachers. As you can see, things took a life of its own soon after lol

A lot of Babymetal's early stuff sounded more like Doki Doki Morning. They started out as a part of Sakura Gakuin, a much larger pop idol group themed after a school, which might be part of why they included more obvious pop elements early on. Part of the Sakura Gakuin gimmick was that they had "school clubs", which were sub-groups with a few of the overall Sakura Gakuin members. Tennis club, science club, cooking club, etc. In Japanese schools, there's usually two types of music club, the regular Music Club which does more classical music, or the Light Music club which does more pop/rock etc. As a pun on this, Babymetal were Sakura Gakuin's "Heavy Music Club".

A lot of people look at Babymetal and where they came from and do 1+1=3, which to be honest is understandable, but wrong.
So a bit of history on the band. A talent agency in Japan, Amuse, found they had a lot of young female tallent on their books. So they started a group called Sakura Gakuin, which was an after school activity club, where they used to train them in all aspects of the entertainment industry. Which included singing and dancing, and they had at leat 3 managers for the group, and those managers were expected to make a side project with some of the girls. One of those managers was an ex guitarist that was in to metal and J-pop, that manager was Koba. He had the idea of starting a side project that mixed J-pop and metal, so he went to the Amuse board and gave them his idea. They told him it would not work, but he was welcome to try out the idea, but it would have no financial support from Amuse. Because no one thought it work.
So Babymetal started without anything. The early uniforms they used were borrowed off friends and teachers. They got a record deal though a contact that Koba knew, then that was a side label of an independent (which they are still on, but had a name change). They made the video for the 1st single 6 months after the release of it from the profits from it. When they made a profit from the live shows, that went in to the production of the next live show or to videos.
As others have said at their 1st festival they were put on at the food courts, what you need to understandis, that the food courts in Japan are were you put on the comedians or joke acts, why? Because people thought it would never work.
So anyone that thinks Babymetal had it easy, or laid out in front of them is wrong. No one gave them a chance, so did not give them anything. They worked hard for all they have got.
The Sonisphere appearance was down to the fans. It was started by a facebook campain to get Babymetal to play at Sonisphere, and the bookers for the event have said, when they saw it starting to gather pace, they invited them. So Babymetals big break, was thanks to the fans.
So yes they were put together, but everything else is just like a normal group.

      @lencooke944 Год назад +1

Thanks Brian, I put the bonus track in for context really, just to give an idea of how they were when they started and with Kagerou, I wanted to show a more recent performance to show where they are now. I put this week together before the release of their new studio album back in March, so due to Babymetal's Covid hiatus, Kagerou was one of their more recent tracks. Babymetal have released several new MVs from their new album featuring live performance, but with studio audio. We will have to wait a while before we start seeing live videos and live audio performances. Amuse will want to wring the dollars out of DVD sales of their shows before they start putting it on their channel for free.

  • @allegorical

That was definitely not the first time Doki Doki Morning was performed. Their first performance of Doki Doki Morning was at the Sakura Gakuin Festival 2010, they didn't have the 'actors' Babybones at the time, which were really just Koba's friends dressed up in handcrafted skeleton costumes
Sakura Gakuin was the project of Amuse which is a major talent agency in Japan, when they wanted to dip their foot into the idol world. Among the producers they sent to form Sakura Gakuin was Koba, who was the one that formed Babymetal, but Amuse saw no prospect in them. So Koba paid for everything out of pocket, and Babymetal wore borrowed uniforms, spent their formative period playing small venues of only a couple hundred people until they started performing at festivals. It took a long time for them to get a backing band, and that was only for certain events like a festival, until eventually in 2013 when they got one permanently which became known as the Kami band.

    • @lencooke944
      @lencooke944 Год назад +5

So true. The clothes they wore in the Doki Doki performance we watched were largely a mash up of clothes borrowed from family, friends and other members of Sakura Gakuin. If I remember correctly, their first stand-alone performance as Babymetal was to an audience of about 150 people (please correct me if I am wrong on this, I am working from memory here). So, no, they didn't have the full production behind them. However, to be fair, Babymetal was able to leverage off their connections through Sakura Gakuin and were already contracted performers with AMUSE. So, they didn't start cold, either.
