Loved the bit where Alaister got fed up of Nadine, turned to Rory and said “say something grown up, Rory” and Rory came in with his beautiful calm articulate example of a true gentleman. Love watching Rory handle people with kindness and reason and when he diffuses them, he does it with no ego so makes them feel safe

@@DaboooogA Not according to many, but more importantly, having been at his side when Boris did the dirty on the lot of us, completely demoralised about politics and no longer interested. And no, Rory, the low turnout was NOT about apathy, but the same alienation you feel from the whole system. Representative Democracy has definitively failed, because the Parties no longer represent anything other than themselves. You treat the electorate as vote fodder, presume we'll follow blindly - we won't - and don't listen. The only solution is to return the final say in legislation from the monarch to the people, in an effective form of Direct Democracy, a ratification referendum instead of Royal Assent. Does the electorate actually support each Bill completed this week? Yes/No.

And we focused on the need to beat the Tory to achieve national change. Supporters from nearby constituencies where we weren't players poured in to help us. It worked - the result was a massive swing, turning a 6k deficit with the new boundary to a 21k majority. We even grabbed much of the Labour vote...

The thing about the SNP a lot of people overlook is that a lot of SNP voters weren't that bothered about independence per se: maybe they favoured it but not strongly or didn't think it would actually happen or didn’t actually care. A lot of Scots saw Labour in disarray, wanted a competent centre left government and went for the SNP. For as long as the SNP delivered that at Holyrood and Labour remained in the wilderness, the SNP did well. Once Labour pulled itself together, the SNP was inevitably going to see a decline. Couple that with financial scandals and the leadership in disarray and you get a wipeout.

The need for electoral reform seems obvious, especially since your 'multi-party' 'splintering' is probably there to stay. No reform, and the trust in the political system will continue to wither.

We have been in desperate need of PR for years and it’s important we call for it consistently not just when the results become more anomalous.
People claim it would or it wouldn’t work.. the key thing is we need to try because it is not right when people’s votes count for nothing.. in FPTP so many people do not vote because they know they will not be represented

@@craigsoota1 the turnout has dropped for reasons other than FPTP.
FPTP is the same as its always been, so it's affect on turnout is also the same.

Ultimately reform is destroying the right wing vote. It's not that Labour are doing amazing. It's that the votes that would have gone to Conservatives are now being split with reform allowing Labour to win because their vote isn't being pulled in any direction.
Ultimately if Labour does OK and starts to make progress some progress in key policy areas this will spell trouble for the right.
Half the problem with the conservatives campaign was it was terrible as they weren't offering anything. It was I know things are bad but don't vote for the other party as things will be worse as opposed to what? The rubbish situation you have led the country in. Thats hardly a ringing endorsement. Ch4 election coverage was fantastic. Thoughtful and civil discussions (except for Nadine, who was a harpy). As an American I was amazed by how much I learned overnight of UK politics, and also deeply impressed by how local and human MP elections are. The tradition of seeing all the candidates on stage when the count is announced is beautiful.
Here in the US we have one Representative for about 700,000 people and campaigns spend a ridiculous amount of money from God knows where, so we don’t don’t have anything close to those community center speeches. Moving stuff!

Channel 4 eleciton show was by far the best in my opinion. Switched between all at several occasions, inc. Scottish and the energy and dynamix nature of the Channel 4 presentation was far better and more engaging. Good job to everyone involved!

The Portillo moment was definitely Liz Truss. She was furious. It was fantastic. Running away like coward instead of making a speech showed how little emotional intelligence she has.

I was fully prepared to watch Channel 4 coverage for the duration last night. Rory, Alastair and Emily M are 3 voices I would choose to listen to over almost any other in politics.
However the inclusion of Dorries and Widdicombe really tainted my experience and I ended up flitting between all of the najor networks. Surely there were other dissenting voices that were more appropriate?
Well done to RS/AC/EM for getting the sensible grown up opinions over.

The media's focus on Labour's potential majority and Conservative decline in recent polls desensitised the public to the election results. We went into this election expecting these results. After the exit poll, the media seemed to immediately focus on Reform and their supposed 13 seats. It feels like this was led by the media needing a new angle to report on since Labour victory was in some ways 'old news'. We have to make sure the coverage of Farage is proportionate and does not feed the frenzy.

I think Campbell raised this with Channel 4 presenters by asking the mention the 4 seats the Greens won, and give their side of politics equal amount of air time that’s seems to get hoovered up by Farage

One thing I wanted to ask both Rory and Alastair..what is the main focus of a new opposition? I'd love to believe that some soul searching goes on, followed by a very in depth look at which Western governments are succeeding in growth and the welfare/happiness of their citizens, then trying to work out if those policies would work in the UK, and if not, if there was a way to adapt them. Does this ever happen? Or is the thinking mostly insular and ideological rather than holistically pragmatic?

    • @HMJ66
      @HMJ66 5 дней назад

Probably just more stoking culture war nonsense to try and regain some credibility with the Reform crowd. There's literally zero chance that the Conservative party will look anywhere other than perhaps the US and Russia for "inspiration" as to how to run government and what the new government should be doing. To them, Europe is just a big scary place full of foreigners where nothing good ever happened after 1945.
