- How radical will Starmer’s Labour be in government? Would a change of the voting system only further strengthen the far right?
In the first episode of Keir Starmer’s premiership, Rory and Alastair answer all these questions and more.

Loved the bit where Alaister got fed up of Nadine, turned to Rory and said “say something grown up, Rory” and Rory came in with his beautiful calm articulate example of a true gentleman. Love watching Rory handle people with kindness and reason and when he diffuses them, he does it with no ego so makes them feel safe
Calm, Articulate yet unelectable.

@@DaboooogA oh bah humbug to you. Why take a nice comment and taint it with something cynical? You don’t need to do that
@@josyms7849 not sure
@@DaboooogA Not according to many, but more importantly, having been at his side when Boris did the dirty on the lot of us, completely demoralised about politics and no longer interested. And no, Rory, the low turnout was NOT about apathy, but the same alienation you feel from the whole system. Representative Democracy has definitively failed, because the Parties no longer represent anything other than themselves. You treat the electorate as vote fodder, presume we'll follow blindly - we won't - and don't listen. The only solution is to return the final say in legislation from the monarch to the people, in an effective form of Direct Democracy, a ratification referendum instead of Royal Assent. Does the electorate actually support each Bill completed this week? Yes/No.
Alastair and Rory done the Rest of Politics community proud on Channel 4 last night. Well done 👍🏻
Agreed!
Agree. Unfortunately the way Channel 4 “organised” the coverage was a disaster.
@@samueljweston i liked it more of a debate format. Campbell couldnt admit that Starmer hadnt really grown his vote share. Just wanted to push a labour line of a wins a win

Nadine Dorries was insufferable last night. The type of woman to make the whole room uncomfortable and relieved when she leaves
She was acting like a rude and shouty drunk. I stopped watching for a while and when I switched back she had gone on "a break" which lasted all night thankfully.
Actually (apart from an unhealthy obsession and adulation of Johnson) Nadine has some good insight into the reasons why the Conservatives have collapsed. And she's loyal to the Conservative party. She'll never defect to Reform despite her anger at not getting a peerage. 😂 she hates Campbell - its personal
@@Joker-yw9hl She made stupid allegations against others & she was told to stop lying...
She just sounded ridiculous...& still very pro Johnson.
I was glad to see the back of her...
@@yasminanjum3310 She reminded this oldie of another past oldie and writer of unreadable books, dear saccharine Barbara Cartland. Always dressed in pink with a candy floss air about her, it was like looking into the future for a naff Nadine. Always after the money and vulgar with it. She certainly lowered the tone of what could have been the most thoughtful and serious coverage of a momentous occasion.
She reminds me of that Glenn Close character when it comes to Johnson, just hope Johnson’s kids never decide to keep rabbits
I don't say this flippantly, you two should be very proud of the quality you're bringing to public discourse. Watching the scenes today, tears in my eyes, 14 years seeing my students growing up in absolute poverty, unable to get a dentist, a new pair of shoes, enough money to be fed at home. I can't stress how important this is to the lives of millions across the country.
Please keep doing what you're doing, rational, non emotional rhetoric, arguing against populism, and the far right.
Lol
This exchange really sums up the quality of left versus right discourse these days.

Spot on by Rory. Truss not only incompetent but as her demise clearly showed, classless too. Good riddance.
Galloway classless too.
An American in New York here. You gentlemen are one of my go to’s for British politics. Wonderful analysis.
I agree with Rory, the gracious concessions from Sunak, Hunt, and Rees-Mogg are a credit to our democracy and how civil politics can and should be. Let’s hope we can maintain that as the USA seems to go the other way.
As a Brit now in the usa....you dont realise how important that is until its gone.terrified about November.
That was a comment I made to someone earlier today. I was surprised at the grace, humility, and humanity in many of the tory concession speeches. If they'd displayed those qualities over the last 2 years, they may have had a more successful election.
I loathe Rees Mogg, but he was humble and honest last night
41% of the electorate didn’t bother
14% were already angry and are going to be furious that they only have 4 seats to show for it

Don’t forget she’s also getting 24/7 police protection at taxpayers’ expense.
Thank you, Alastair and Rory, for your professional and objective coverage of the election. You embody the excellence the BBC was known for in the days of Robin Day, Peter Snow, and David Dimbleby. @LuzDoSol-yr5bv Completely agree these two have a huge amount of chemistry as well, they make talking about politics fun. The more people who listen to them the more informed and politically engaged our population will become.
@rivgacooper5330 Truth that!!! The differences in political analysis make me at least a better participant.
I laugh so hard a click with Alistair and Nadine Doris this morning. The politics of populism and celebrity type of character needs to stop. Britain is away better than that.
I am still not totally convinced about Stamer, but at least we have a new day, new politicians. 😂😂
As I watched I wanted it to be just the two of them. The engaging analysis and understanding seemed lost on so many of the guests - not just Nadine !!

On the LibDem strategy, I was campaigning for Tim Farron in Westmorland and Lonsdale. On the doorstep we kept it local, stressing Tim's exceptional record of working for the constituency. And we focused on the need to beat the Tory to achieve national change. Supporters from nearby constituencies where we weren't players poured in to help us. It worked - the result was a massive swing, turning a 6k deficit with the new boundary to a 21k majority. We even grabbed much of the Labour vote...
I'm a labour voter, I'm really happy for you guys. You deserve a fresh start too and 70+ seats is the perfect way for your party to stretch it's legs
Yep deep in Wiltshire Labour was 4th behind Lib dem, then Tory, Reform and finally labour. People need to realise the Tories lost loads of voters to lib dem. Look at the south west, lib dem stronghold for the firs time in a long time!
Well Done to you, thank you so much for your hard work! Marvellous. I didn't vote tactically, but voted Liberal Democrats regardless of it being a safe(ish) Labour seat. I'm so proud of the LibDems getting 71 seats!! 😊
Tim was our MP until recently (we left Levens in 2023) absolutely superb local MP. Congratulations to him and you all!!!
@@ataraxisbuildsthings429 I've been involved with a number of constituencies and never seen anything approaching Tim's level of dedication. For example he's raised the funds for a whole office-full of case-workers. He doesn't impose his Christian views on anyone, and is hugely involved with the community. Canvassing with Tim is a nightmare because he gets involved in lively discussions with every second voter and we have to drag him away...
Can we just loop a video of Liz Truss being slow hand-clapped and reluctantly being forced on to the stage to accept her humiliation please ? That was the best start to my day.
I wish we had the declaration of results in Australia. I think it’s great to see a pompous Tory next to a monster raving looney or Lord Buckethead.
Watching you both and Emily on Channel 4 was fantastic - my two favorite podcasts together!! Thanks for your hard work!

I suspect what happens next is that the headbanger wing of the Conservative Party peels away and joins Reform, as they see the party as the best for their own careers, and the Conservatives drift back to the centre. Get back into Parliament, Rory. I'm a lifelong Labour voter (or was until recent elections saw me turn to Green) but you're the sort of politician I like. Not a fan of Jess Phillips usually but her winning speech was magnificent and she's risen hugely in my estimation.
Alternatively, the Tories continue their rightward travel, embrace all of Reform's points, and end up inviting Farage to join the party. Electoral suicide of course, but a lot of the Conservative members aren't the brightest bunch
Jess Phillips was quite happy to pander to them when they were voting for her
Initially I was rolling my eyes regarding Ed Davey's stunts but he's made young people know who he is. Two months ago they didn't recognise his name.
Agreed. My local LibDem candidate pointed out that without these action man antics Ed Davey would not have got a fraction of the air time that he got as a result of them. He’s not a daft as his antics made him appear, it was an effective strategy in terms of gaining an opportunity to be heard.
@@tamartiger9055 Every stunt had a message too, eg Lake Windermere is full of shit thanks to privatised water companies. Fair play to him.
The thing about the SNP a lot of people overlook is that a lot of SNP voters weren't that bothered about independence per se: maybe they favoured it but not strongly or didn't think it would actually happen or didn’t actually care. A lot of Scots saw Labour in disarray, wanted a competent centre left government and went for the SNP. For as long as the SNP delivered that at Holyrood and Labour remained in the wilderness, the SNP did well. Once Labour pulled itself together, the SNP was inevitably going to see a decline. Couple that with financial scandals and the leadership in disarray and you get a wipeout.
It's extremely refreshing to watch two people talking about these issues like adults. I don't agree wholly with either of these people's views- but I could at least seriously consider voting for them
Hopefully more of the same going forward.

The Lib Dems have such a perfect opportunity now to bring in those moderate conservatives.
I strongly believe the Tories will shift further to the right, and their traditional base will simply move over to the Lib Dems.
Yep - same here. switched from Conservative to Lib-Dem. The Lib-Dems were the only party that campaigned for Remain in the referendum. That alone would be enough for them to get my vote, but if there was ever any doubt, Boris fixed that.

It’s terrifying. They are terrifying. Utterly unhinged.
I suspect the likes of Francois are incapable of learning anything!
(First comment here, from Norway.) Labour got two third of the mandates with one third of the votes. LibDems got 71 seats with less votes than Reform, who got 4(?) seats. The need for electoral reform seems obvious, especially since your 'multi-party' 'splintering' is probably there to stay. No reform, and the trust in the political system will continue to wither.
(Norway has 9 parties in parliament, and no majority party. We quarrel about everything, but the more important the topic is the more we come together and compromise. EVERY party, from communists to populist right agrreed on new and dramatically increased defense spending in the last few months.)
In principle I'd agree, but I suspect that nothing would get done with a UK collation.
@haakontangvald-pedersen8374 Norwegian are good at compromise, your system works for you. The British, well not so good it would be a total mess.
We hear that some European nations take 6 months to get a working coalition, and if this happens in the UK we'd be screwed.
Our involvement in the stock exchange requires a stable government, Norway is not so reliant on markets, and what shareholders think of it.
We are not the same country, I spent a long time in Norway and would love the British to be more Nordic but we are not, a significant number of the UK electorate would accept high homelessness for a 1% tax, that does not happen in Norway.
@@rivgacooper5330agreed on all counts. Those who shout for the removal of FPTP have no idea the mess we would end up in.
If Reform want to win seats then they need to be tactical with where they stand and campaign. Take a leaf out of the Lib Dems book.
We have been in desperate need of PR for years and it’s important we call for it consistently not just when the results become more anomalous.
People claim it would or it wouldn’t work.. the key thing is we need to try because it is not right when people’s votes count for nothing.. in FPTP so many people do not vote because they know they will not be represented

FPTP is the same as its always been, so it's affect on turnout is also the same.

But we need effective opposition, opposition that are in-touch with the voters
If the Tories drag themselves to the right, they'll lose the support and faith of most of their voter base.

I feel uncomfortable at what I feel is Alastair & Rory's fawning on Nadhim Zahawa. We must never be allowed to forget, this man attempted to evade £3 million in Capital Gains Tax on the sale of his YouGov shares. He also conducted a vindictive campaign against tax lawyer, Dan Neidle, who uncovered the missing CGT. Zahawa at first claimed he was falsely accused and had 'followed the rules'. That then became an admission of carelessness. An oversight he explained, and accepted as such by HMRC, except that they then hit him with a massive £1.5 million fine.

Did you look at Alastair's face. At times a wry look of cynicism when Zahawi was wittering on.
They aren't fawning. However, whatever wrongs Nadhim has done don't negate the fact that he is quite polite and respectful to talk to, so they at least give him space to talk. Unlike someone like Nadine Dorries who constantly tries to talk over people and spout nonsense.
Thank you for the replies, but I stand by remarks. The man is shameless, still self-fanning his and Johnson's 'triumph' of the vaccine programme. I think labours low vote share is a result of the Gaza protest votes, it's not just Muslims, but others too.
And, also the result of tactical voting, where Labour voters would have voted for other candidates to keep the Tory candidate or Farage lot out.
I'm sure both the above must account for at least around a million votes, most likely more.
That's over 10% of their vote count, adding at least 4 percentage points, likely more, to their vote share.
Ultimately reform is destroying the right wing vote. It's not that Labour are doing amazing. It's that the votes that would have gone to Conservatives are now being split with reform allowing Labour to win because their vote isn't being pulled in any direction.
Ultimately if Labour does OK and starts to make progress some progress in key policy areas this will spell trouble for the right.
Half the problem with the conservatives campaign was it was terrible as they weren't offering anything. It was I know things are bad but don't vote for the other party as things will be worse as opposed to what? The rubbish situation you have led the country in. Thats hardly a ringing endorsement. And you discussed the election before the South Basildon result came.
Please spare a thought for us. Channel 4 has done some very good programmes on Sri Lanka.☺
Great job chaps. I love the balance of views between you as much as your encyclopaedic knowledge, it's so easy to listen to.
Labour still need to regain respect on their position concerning Gaza.
I watched Channel 4 (via RUclips) Particularly loved the "fewer" comment against Nadine.. That was great coverage and you guys did an excellent job
i met Rory playing football, during a winter up in Scotland. A very lovely chap, with integrity, grit and humanity. Alaister - seems to have mellowed and become somebody I would have dinner with. Good show.
The work starts now to help the left behind and those who have fallen behind since 2010. So much to do to change the direction of the statistics on poverty, health and life expectancy, educational achievement for the many (not the few), job and career opportunity for the young and the old, housing et al. Alastair and Rory, please keep on proving a forum for real discussion and debate about how to do that
New Labour had 13 years to do all that .
They had plenty of opportunities to reverse and correct some of the Wicked Witch’s disastrous policies….but chose not to.
So I’d caution against expecting anything like change from this new lot.
I say new lot because this is no New Labour.
These are the old guard …
And they were tired before Tony took them over .
Buckle up kids, it’s going to be an interesting ride .
Free Palestine! Corbyn should be PM.
The best politics podcast on You Tube
Bizarrely Nicola sturgeon was one of the commentators on itv I think. It must have been so painful to publicly see SNP crumble
Tom Tugenhart Im glad stayed and believe he should be next Tory leader
Been a pleasure listening to you two. Freedom at last after 14 years of misery.
Ch4 election coverage was fantastic. Thoughtful and civil discussions (except for Nadine, who was a harpy). As an American I was amazed by how much I learned overnight of UK politics, and also deeply impressed by how local and human MP elections are. The tradition of seeing all the candidates on stage when the count is announced is beautiful.
Here in the US we have one Representative for about 700,000 people and campaigns spend a ridiculous amount of money from God knows where, so we don’t don’t have anything close to those community center speeches. Moving stuff!
Channel 4 eleciton show was by far the best in my opinion. Switched between all at several occasions, inc. Scottish and the energy and dynamix nature of the Channel 4 presentation was far better and more engaging. Good job to everyone involved!
The Portillo moment was definitely Liz Truss. She was furious. It was fantastic. Running away like coward instead of making a speech showed how little emotional intelligence she has.
Rory is utter class
Up for 26 hrs....😮
great discussion and analysis hope it keeps going
Very impressive endurance by AC and Rory. Looking forward to the ongoing analysis of Starmer and Labour Party.
Turnout is low. Apathy? Complacency? Disaffection? New ID rules?
All of the above.
The repetitive mantra of the ignorant is ‘Don’t trust any of them - they’re all the same’. Labour hasn’t been in power for 14 yrs!
Im sick of hysteria, lies amd extremism .
So you watch a sick-minded liar like Campbell - how much blood spilled by his and his close friends’ hands…
He fooled us all and destroyed the lives of MILLIONS of innocent people - and caused the twisted mess that is now our broken country.
Maybe we need a Mr Boring, that's my view on it. Someone measured rather than a childish entertainer.
Guys, with love, go to sleep.
It's a wonderful and stimulating pleasure to you two debate and analyse politics and events.
Kind regards from Germany
Thank you, Alastair and Rory. You must both feel bloody knackered (😂)… but your election coverage has been exceptional and completely unmatched.
I was fully prepared to watch Channel 4 coverage for the duration last night. Rory, Alastair and Emily M are 3 voices I would choose to listen to over almost any other in politics.
However the inclusion of Dorries and Widdicombe really tainted my experience and I ended up flitting between all of the najor networks. Surely there were other dissenting voices that were more appropriate?
Well done to RS/AC/EM for getting the sensible grown up opinions over.
The media's focus on Labour's potential majority and Conservative decline in recent polls desensitised the public to the election results. We went into this election expecting these results. After the exit poll, the media seemed to immediately focus on Reform and their supposed 13 seats. It feels like this was led by the media needing a new angle to report on since Labour victory was in some ways 'old news'. We have to make sure the coverage of Farage is proportionate and does not feed the frenzy.
I think Campbell raised this with Channel 4 presenters by asking the mention the 4 seats the Greens won, and give their side of politics equal amount of air time that’s seems to get hoovered up by Farage
I loved Alistair's no nonsense approach to Nadine Dorries last night
Thank you both!
One thing I wanted to ask both Rory and Alastair..what is the main focus of a new opposition? I'd love to believe that some soul searching goes on, followed by a very in depth look at which Western governments are succeeding in growth and the welfare/happiness of their citizens, then trying to work out if those policies would work in the UK, and if not, if there was a way to adapt them. Does this ever happen? Or is the thinking mostly insular and ideological rather than holistically pragmatic?
Probably just more stoking culture war nonsense to try and regain some credibility with the Reform crowd. There's literally zero chance that the Conservative party will look anywhere other than perhaps the US and Russia for "inspiration" as to how to run government and what the new government should be doing. To them, Europe is just a big scary place full of foreigners where nothing good ever happened after 1945.
😂 .. the naïveté of people on this channel is pretty funny
@jsquire5pa I realise it's naive. But that's no reason why it shouldn't be considered and every indication of why things go round and round.
@@paulgnsn554 you’ve asked a question to them with an utterly obvious answer that is the complete opposite of your milquetoast middlebrow centrist view of the world … try and take in information from more than just your narrow little perimeter ..
You both were wasted on Channel 4! I much rather have just listen to you without the others, especially Nadine. She was down right rude to everyone!!!!
Labours most memorable moment was Keir telling us how his father was a tool maker
Fantastic coverage from you two, on TV and across the prompt podcasts. Wonderful service and some entertaining comments here and there. But mostly, care for democracy in the world. Thank you
