    posting it here too cause none of you reads the description anyway:
    hi! here are some fragments (mostly unedited, I only cut out irrelevant parts) of a "How To Keep Well In Wartime" booklet from 1943 (I was using a reprint from the Imperial War Museum). in the video I use the phrase "self-quarantine" because I've seen people use that phrase to describe staying home, but after some research I found that it's mostly used when describing people that could've been exposed to the virus or are already sick, so "lockdown" is a more appropriate phrase. it was too late to change it in the video as the actor has already recorded the text. also be aware that the outdoor scenes were recorded in my garden! stay home! and finally, please remember that these tips, even though they could be helpful, are all almost 80 years old. please refer to WHO's guidelines for actual up-to-date tips on how to live and behave: www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public

Thus, the obsession with "fresh air." Miasma was a thing until the early 20th Century. There were desperate housing shortages because of the post-war baby boom, & temporary housing had become a permanent fixture, so high-rise flats were designed to cope with the increased population. They didn't actually go up until well after the war & they weren't fully populated until the early 1960s .

Before that, you didn't want to drink water unless it had been boiled. If you're boiling water anyway, you might as well just make tea or coffee. So plain water was just not considered nice even though it was perfectly good and harmless.

    It's amazing that even with the cultural differences between the 1940's and now, all of the advice that we are given is the same. Keep your routines as much as you can, make sure to go outside, drink more water. Even if we do think differently in many ways now, we also think the same as we did because of our natural body chemistry as humans. We physically need the same things as time goes on, and our minds are still similar enough to give the EXACT SAME advice for going about it. With all of the contrasts we point out when comparing decades, that is actually pretty cool!

    Yesssss, so tired of hearing "but I get plenty of water in my diet soda!" and other such nonsense. If it has something else in it, it ain't water anymore. End of story. Now to go refill my water glass I've totally not been ignoring for hours...

    • @AlexaFaie
      @AlexaFaie 4 года назад +25

      Interestingly enough, the often quoted daily amount of water is far more than what our bodies actually require. Different people require different amounts of water and its actually possible to get enough water from food alone if you eat the appropriate amount of fruit and veg and meat (all things with decent water content). The 8 glasses thing was originally referring to the total amount of water a very physically active 6ft man would require from all sources - food and liquids. It was never meant to be 8 glasses of water on top of everything else. And soda is still water - the flavourings and sugars/sweeteners are dissolved in the solution of the fizzy water, but don't actually chemically change it (even the carbon dioxide added to make it fizzy doesn't bind and change the water - it leaves as carbon dioxide the same as it was added). So its actually very easy to absorb the water from sodas. Is it the best option? No, for other health reasons. But its not totally evil either.

I must admit I'm a little tired of hearing healthy intelligent, low-risk people whinging about things that are little more than inconveniences, when there are so many doing it so tough. Although I'm high-risk (immunosuppressed & chronically ill), I was already staying home, so not much changed for me. However, people in aged care are not only high-risk, but now mostly alone & confined to their rooms; older people at home no longer receiving visitors; many, many thousands suddenly unemployed on top of everything. Now would be a great time for us to look around & see how this is situation is affecting someone else, other than ourselves & to use social media for something other than whining - check in on others regularly.
