  • Old Ptolemy character on Alexander:
Our world is gone now. Smashed by the wars. Now I am the keeper of his body, embalmed here in the Egyptian ways. I followed him as Pharaoh, and have now ruled 40 years. I am the victor. But what does it all mean when there is not one left to remember - the great cavalry charge at Gaugamela, or the mountains of the Hindu Kush when we crossed a 100,000-man army into India? He was a god, Cadmos. Or as close as anything I've ever seen.
How can I tell you what it was like to be young; to dream big dreams? And to believe when Alexander looked you in the eye you could do anything. In his presence, by the light of Apollo, we were better than ourselves.
I've known many great men in my life, but only one colossus. And only now in old do I understand who this force of nature really was. Or do I
I've lived... I've lived long life, Cadmos, but the glory and the memory of men will always belong to the ones who follow their great visions. The greatest of these is the one they now call Megas Alexandros. The greatest of them all.

While I agree to an extent as I feel the movie has some redeeming qualities I think there are huge mistakes as well. One, the focus of the movie... there should have been more battle scenes and less melo-drama and relationship stuff. I know this sounds kind of "brash" but its' a movie about the greatest conqueror ever and the opening Battle of Gaugamela is so well done it's just a shame.

'I never believed in his dream, none of us did. That's the truth of his life. The dreamers exhaust us. They must die before they kill us with their blasted dreams.'
    - Ptolemy
A fundamental truth of history. Humanity will always advance, but the great leaps of history in warfare, technology, society and philosophy are driven by great men with impossible dreams. Looking back with the benefit of hindsight we can see these great men were right in their own areas to one extent or another. But when they lived and breathed their dreams consumed those around them, like a star drawing planetary bodies with it's gravity to burn in its fiery mass.
Alexander the Great is unlike any who came before him and after since. Greater Empires have been born, better societies and armies have been created, but never were they a product of a single man and his vision, but generations of soldiers and statesmen.
That is what makes him Alexander the Great and perhaps one of the few people in history deserving of the title.

Alexander the Great or Μέγας Αλέξανδρος. The greatest Greek (Hellinas is the better translation because Romans and Ottomans called us that way) ever walked on Earth... What a leader?! Always at the front line, yet never severely injured... Luck or something else?!...

His ribs were punctured by an arrow from short range as he was at the walls in the end of indian campaign, that was the closest he was ever to death before babylon.

Definitely Alexander was a great warrior...but he was almost defeated at India. And he did not advanced further into India after Indus river when he knew about the massive army of maurya Dynasty and Magadh empire... Specially the war elephants.

Evert Alonso ...I said almost defeated. He fought with porus at the Indian border.. porus was defeated but it costed Alexander too. That time Magadh empire was most powerful Kingdom in India whose military and economy was far far more greater than Alexander. Thats why he decided to retreat from Indus river back but died on the way due to some desease and weakness.

He may be Alexander the Great but his downfall was that the lands he took were not to be used of that importantly back than at his times expect for the gold and Middle eastern riches, though he was something he won't be great as the Leader of Rome, named as Octivian, Ceaser, Aurelius, Constantine, Hadrian, Trajan and etc, the Roman emperors were indeed Chad and I'm afraid Alexander wasn't that good enough, though there is some better than the Roman emperors, Leader of Grand Columbia, Empire of Brazil, Elizabeth, Caliphs of Islamic world and so on, but not a lot are better than the roman emperors, but we do know Constantine and Aurelius were one of the best

Maybe, but Alexander was the first cosmopolitan... It was him who set the idea of globalization 2400 years ago and that was very progresive for that time and its still progresive for great part of the civilization... That what makes him after Buddha, Jesus and Mohamed the fourth greatest man that ever lived and one day when the globalization take everywhere Hi could be easyly proclaimed as the most influental person that ever lived.
