This movie has flaws. It is imperfect. The casual audiences and masses find a distaste for it. Arguing over what race he was, or other meaningless rhetoric. Yet, this is not what I have found. For whatever reason, the first time I watched this movie, left me in deep thoughts, in a way, it scarred me spiritually. From a historical view, he was probably a warmonger, a monster. But, I judge him by his time, and what we truly know of the world. If that was his only trait, then why is it more than 2300 years later, we idolize this man? I do not see us idolizing Genghis Khan in the same way, nor other generals/kings, before or since. Truly, his tale somehow resonates with every young boy who learns of it. The mysterious reason behind this, I feel, will always remain that way, unknown.

Full text: "Our world is gone now. I’m the last left alive. Whether that’s a blessing or a curse who by Hades would know. But I’ve paid my price in blood. And in broken dreams. Now I am the keeper of his body, embalmed here in the Egyptian ways. I followed him as Pharaoh, and have now ruled 40 years. I am the victor. But what does it all mean when there is not one left to remember - the great cavalry charge at Gaugamela, or the mountains of the Hindu Kush when we crossed a 100,000-man army into India? They say we were the greatest fighting force ever known to man. Greater even than the expedition to Troy.
But how can I say it? How can I tell you what it is like to be young and to dream big dreams? To believe when Alexander looked you in the eye, you could do anything. Anything. In his presence, by the light of Apollo, we were better than ourselves. Truly, I’ve known many great men in my life but only one colossus. And only now, when old do I understand who this force of nature really was. Or do I?
Did such a man as Alexander exist? Of course not. We idolize him, make him better than he was. Men, all men, reach and fall, reach and fall. Eighteen great Alexandrias he built across this world. It was an empire, not of land and gold, but of the mind. It was a Hellenic civilization open to all. He was a god, Cadmos, or as close as anything I’ve ever known. “Tyrant!” they yell so easily. I laugh. No tyrant ever gave back so much. What do they know of the world, these schoolboys? But they have never seen the great cavalry charge of Gaugamela, or the mountains of the Hindu Kush when we crossed a hundred-thousand-man army into lndia.
It takes strong men to rule. Alexander was more, he was a Prometheus, a friend to man. He changed the world. Before him, there were tribes and after him, all was possible. There was suddenly a sense the world could be ruled by one king and be better for all.
But the truth is never simple and yet it is. The truth is, we did kill him. By silence, we consented. Because- Because we couldn’t go on. After all this time, to give away our wealth to Asian sycophants we despised? Mixing the races, harmony? Oh, he talked of these things, but wasn’t it really about Alexander and another population ready to obey him? I never believed in his dream. None of us did. That’s the truth of his life. The dreamers exhaust us. They must die before they kill us with their blasted dreams.
Oh, he could have stayed home in Macedonia, married, raised a family. He’d have died a celebrated man. But this was not Alexander. All his life, he fought to free himself from fear. And by this, and this alone, he was made free. The freest man l’ve ever known. His tragedy was one of increasing loneliness and impatience with those who could not understand. And if his desire to reconcile Greek and barbarian ended in failure. What failure! His failure towered over other men’s successes. I’ve lived - I’ve lived long life, Cadmos, but the glory and the memory of man will always belong to the ones who follow their great visions. And the greatest of these is the one they now call 'Megas Alexandros'. The greatest Alexander of them all."

Oliver captures a lot of the spirit of that time, and Vangelis's music is genius. Things were actually harsher though. Alexander was more confident, and knew almost everything going down. Especially enjoyed playing with his deadly Agrianians. Who knew his dressing up was an act. He was worried that Kleitus had joined Parmenios plot. (he hadnt). But was blindsided by the Aristotle/Antipater/Kassander/Iollas poisoning. Thamks for this

He was viewed as a god...he never tired..we followed a man whose thirst was endless. A home he sought, a home of freedom, acceptance and love. Tyranny was the cry of the uneducated. We laughed at them; if they only walked his path as we did. We followed until our undertanding of our world ended and a new one began. Alexander's vision was larger than our dreams. The many failures he had made our successes seem unimportant. His life was tearing him apart, but he did not stop. A true leader and explorer.

Many in your nation will try to convince you that Alexander was an enemy, thats not true, Alexander was truly an anomaly in history, he did not want to force any culture upon others, Alexander wanted a single world government under one leader, no one understood his dreams, all his generals were concerned with material gains only Alexander had the vision. Yes, he did not venture further into India, if he did, he might have won, he might have lost but that doesn't change the fact that most never truly understood his perspective, his own generals conspired because they wanted a piece of his large empire for themselves, he was the conqueror of the world yet still a lonely man

Beautiful video. However I find the description of the burning of the library to be a bit misleading. We don't know when the library was destroyed. Could've been four seperate times. 1st: Caesar in 47 B.C. during the Egyptian Campaign, 2nd: Aurelian's Reconquest of the East, 3rd: The anti-Pagan riots of the 390s A.D., or the Islamic Conquest in the 600s. And we aren't really going to figure out when it was destroyed until we invent a time machine. :/

Seleukos was the victor, not Ptolemy. He did what Alexander did until he was 80, not born a king, defeating his peers many times with inferior arms. Defeating Demetrios at Gaza, Nicanor in Persia, again Demetrios and then Antigonos in Babylonia, Stasanor in Bactria, fought and made peace with Chandragupta Maurya, defeated Antigonos, Demetrios and Pyrhos at Ipsos, then Demetrios again in Kilikia, Lysimachos at Korrupedium, only to be killed by the son of Ptolemy, the man who stole his throne in Egypt after stealing the body of Alexander, initiating the wars of the succesors. Seluekos was the true successor of Alexander, rightly named Nikator, the Victor.
