Salahudin had an army the size we cannot comprehend fighting in muslim territory for Allah in order to avenge infidel attacks on peaceful muslims. Baldwin had an army of proven knights fighting under the true cross (supposedly the same cross Jesus was crucified on) in mostly hostile territory looking to save christian men from being murdered by blasphemers. Had it been real, they all would have died. Every man would have died. Every man in that fight would have thrown themselves into the inferno, because if they had survived they would be treated as traitors and deserters and would meet a much harsher end than they could possibly think.

It's overlooked for a reason. Ridley Scott just butchers history too much. I would absolutely love a film like kingdom of heaven with that cinematics but a better script.
If you rewatch this scene with that in mind it's like Salahudin could only see his sickness and he was sympathetic to him during the entire "negotiation."
An Islamic Physician between the 9th and 13th century was like a sorcerer, thanks to the Islamic Golden Age. They had a detailed knowledge of cures for a myriad of diseases and maladies - meanwhile in Europe, religious zealotry actively persecuted anyone attempting to so much as remove a rotten tooth. So, for Saladin to send his Personal Physicians to help Baldwin - it was a subtle message conveying how deeply he respected Baldwin, in spite of being his enemy. In a world without politics or religious divide, they might have been the best of friends.
@@GhettoArabSageNo, Baldwin won vs saladin when he was 16. He asked to go back and that he will punish the guy himself no need for unnecessary killing of both sides. Saladin accepted that proposal and he knew Baldwin isn't a trash leader. He won once he can win again. So it's like a win-win for both. He had respect for the person who defeated him and wanted to cure the disease that's why he sent his physicians. Respect for both ❤

He's not saying he'll win, and he's not saying Saladin will win, he's saying that they will both fight until the last man and it simply isn't worth the bloodshed. Extremely reasonable and logical while also being very diplomatic. Amazing depiction of an amazing historical figure.

People point out that Saladin saying "I will send you my physicians." Is a sign of big respect. But King Baldwin replying As-salamu alaykum is a big reciprocation of that respect. Emphasized because later in the movie, Saladin says As-salamu alaykum to Baelian and Baelian replies in English.
@Misha Disrael today men have no honor no respect for culture nor religion they are losing their manners to appear more cool or more "civilized" this is not manhood
I absolutely loved the fact that they truly respected each other. The way Salaheddine lowered his eyes when king Baldwin seemed unwell and only said that he would send him his physicians; beautiful!
Those two have history, and have leadered a number of wars against each other a bunch of times already... and yet both of them are still alive. So they both see each other as equals at this point.
@Brenden Malloy nope, he send pshychians to check the kings health, like he send one of his best horse to the king richard the lion as a replacement when the kings horse were struck
I noticed how uptil 2:43 baldwin is suffering and doing his best to stay strong and potray himself as such by holding his head up high until the terms are made, after which he can finally let go and looks down breathing heavily in agony. This didn't go unnoticed by saladin who took pity and realised how bad his condition had become. His tone in turn becomes soft and compassionate.
Considering Baldwin rode out with the army knowing he would die, he did it just to maintain the peace, it could only be him, Saladin was happy to help him. Baldwin literally sacrificed himself to keep the peace.
The shot of the giant golden cross seemingly floating through the air, and then the massive army of Jerusalem appearing out of the mirage behind it was so damn awesome
I like the way Saladin said "We have terms." Not very often do we get to see a conflict being resolved so decisively and (to a certain level) amicably.
Saladin did utilise a lot of Diplomacy during his rule. Understandably alot of the conflicts during his time were resolved through war, he was one of the few who would take diplomacy if he could.
@@subliminalfalllenangel2108 mate all our leaders have surrendered to the west already, forget islamic glory, its gone, it will return only for a few years, then islam will disappear, its the future, and its how it always will be.
@@subliminalfalllenangel2108 The problem is that the leaders are way TOO diplomatic in the current world. Too much bureaucracy on either side leads to delayed intervention in a time of need. Take the UN for example. Countries outside of their sphere are left to fend while the voting passes (which can often go for longer than a month) and prevents any progress. Plus, in a medieval era, very little resources were allocated in the scale it is now. And even then, most of the imported resources were luxury, there was little need for goods not needed for basic survival. An embargo on the country's resources weren't too much of a threat (aside from neighboring countries, take for example the pyrrhic war where the sea was an important point in trade). In the modern world banana republic states that rely on export of maybe 1 or 2 resources as their main source of income, manpower isn't the main weapon, it's the threat of cutting out essential strategic and civilian goods. And often even in a state of diplomatic impasse, both sides won't back down, which leads to more negotiating jargon which, in turn, stagnates the situation until appropriate ammount of votes are passed through several channels (another process that slows down things). The people, hell, the entire state is left on it's own with zero command outside of their own forces, while the leaders babble away at their large gatherings while innocents and soldiers die... Next time try to sounds less like a pompous prick and read a book for once.
You have to wonder how different a world it might have been had Baldwin been healthy and ruled over Jerusalem for 20, 30, 40+ years and not just the 11 years of his actual reign. The man spent his entire reign walking a tightrope with no harness over a nest of vipers while a disease was literally eating him alive. He defended his land, his people, and his faith until the day he died. One of history's great characters.
The thing is, we dont know how baldwin would be like if he wasnt afflicted with the condition, it probably made him who he is, and if he didn't die, saladin would have to either attack Jerusalem anyway or find a way for Muslims to accept permanent peace.
Exactly. Baldwin's strength and virtues are a big lesson for all of us. He lived in such a chaotic scenario and still managed to show kindness and greatness in his actions. He was a leader like very few men have ever been and his story is just fascinating. God bless his beautiful sou 🙏❤️
Such a great scene between Baldwin and Saladin. King Baldwin was a fascinating character and despite wearing a mask Nortons portrayal and his acting capturing the Kings pain and discomfort especially here is extraordinary. There are very performances that you cant take your eyes off and this is one of them.
would be pretty dumb for a leader who wants to control an army to charge on the frontline. There would be no one to take command of the different legions. Had no matter in ancient times, but later with different tacticts and troops there had to be a leader to yell orders and raise banners so the troops knew where to go.
That’s the thing. He could obviously fight despite is handicap. But, I’m sure the psychological effect that mask had on his enemies was probably like, ohhhhhhhhhh sheeeeeeeet mane🤣
They were both great leaders of their people. The world today cries for leaders like these two. People who could disagree, be sworn enemies, yet were able to treat each other with respect. Sadly, like the Morning Star - we have all fallen. Christians and Muslims alike.

"Withdrawal or we will all die here." People in the comments are missing the point. This isn't about Baldwin being a "badass MF" who came here guns blazing and staring down Salahadin. Baldwin is looking at an army leader who is indeed very good at what he does, but who is extremely furious and emotional over what Reynard has done (attacked a pilgrim caravan and killed his sister). Baldwin's "Withdrawal or we will all die here" isn't a threat. It is a reminder that Baldwin is a leader also, and that he will be forced to retaliate against him, should Salahaddin attack the city, thus causing a massive loss of human life. Which is why he gives his word that Reynard shall be punished, through justice and not vengeance. Baldwin having leprosy doesn't mean he has nothing to lose. It means he cherishes every moment of life he can afford, as well as every life that he can save. "A man in a desert treasures every drop of water."

Baldwin and Saladin were rulers of their time. They were ruthless rulers. However for their time they were indeed mild and thoughtful men. Both men respected each other. The film softens history a fair bit. The film made me look up the real histories of Saladin and Baldwin.
@@MorroTreece I think you're conflating historical events with dramatized dialogue and filler. There are many rulers throughout history who were hated by their own people or just simply existed to exist.. there were very few who changed the fabric of their societies for the better, with no other motive than the betterment of their own people (those tend to be the ones who are assassinated by nobility/senate members/council members). This is a story of two of these rare leaders meeting as enemies, but showing the utmost respect for their enemies (both leaders, and soldiers).

He did the same to Richard the Lionheart. As soon as Salahudin heard that Richard fell ill, he sent bags of fresh fruit aswell as a pile of ice to him. And when Richards Horse died, he sent him a new one. All while still being at war with him. Some people are born to be men.
"I pray you return unharmed to Damascus or we will all die here" with this sentence alone King Baldwin implies the battle would not have a decided winner thus giving Saladin the respect he deserves as a warrior and King while also being humble at the same time. Clearly Saladin admired this and immediately agreed to his terms while showing him respect in return and offering his help with Baldwin's health... Astounding leaders from both parties.
Saladin was smart. He knew the peace couldn't last but he decided to wait for a better opportunity. Which was practically given to him on a silver platter
@Foul Productions I think its more that any victory to be had between either army present on that field would only be had at a massive cost. A total pyrrhic victory. Saladin knew that he could just starve the Crusaders out essentially, so no point in killing 90% of your army.

Saladin really cares for Baldwin's health for several reasons. But most of them all is that he knows that Baldwin can be trusted. It is a war, but a fair one. To everyone who thinks that the soldiers were annoyed about having hiked across a sea of sand only to turn back after a minute long conversation that they didn't even get to participate in: They were shaking in their boots, thinking that they're going to die any moment, only to hear that nah, we're going home. They had never felt such a spike of totally unexpected euphoria in their lives, and the walk home was probably like a giggly dream -- surreal, but 100% positive.
Good way to put it, many were in high spirits and their hopes for martyrdom nearly achieved, however when it comes to battle there are always those who are indeed, scared and shaking in their boots. Battle is best when avoided
Medieval war was not the same as modern war. The conscripted peasants would probably react this way but the lord or other over zealous or vindictive individuals would've been looking forward to the battle at the beginning. It's only when people start to die and notably when they themselves are attacked do they suddenly become fearful.
@@jonathanlondon4265 There were no conscripts in these armies, conscriptions and drafting were incredibly uncommon during the medieval period. Nearly the entirety of the soldiers you see in this scene are levied soldiers or mercenaries, eg they want to be there. In reality, they loved war, and they would be incredibly pissed that there was no battle. Ancient and medieval warfare was utterly different from modern warfare, and the soldiers fighting then loved it dearly, in general that is.
I know it probably wasn't intentional, but the different riding styles of Saladin and Baldwin are neat. Saladins is a bit more hectic, taking sharp turns. Baldwins is controlled, but also a bit stiff. One was trained to fight with horse-archers and light cavalry, the other in heavy cavalry charge attacks. Neat!
I think it also serves to show the contrast between the two’s health, with Saladin, despite being in his 50s, could ride with and maneuver with much spirit, whereas Baldwin, much much younger, takes meaningful, deliberate and careful movements due to his advanced leprosy, and the toll it has taken on his body
It also is a great metaphor for the zeal, determination and vigour both men have not just for their religious beliefs, but their capability to lead at the forefront of two worlds. Mind you, Europe still warred actively with itself whilst the Muslims were engaging with threats to the East. To bring about ANY military or diplomatic action would require no small amount of charisma. However, it is clear that the Chrisitians were living on borrowed time as is. Baldwin's death is one of those very apparent moments in history that served as a turning point for the future events.
Another thing maybe people won't notice is the fact that the director maybe wanted to show that Salahaddin horse was an Arabian, a breed of horses known to be hot tempered, fast, feisty, athletic, slender with a lot of character. Baldwin on the other hand probably was riding a Thorobreed horse or some other European breed, much quieter, but bigger and more suited to heavy cavalry action

I like the way Saladin said "We have terms." Not very often do we get to see a conflict being resolved so decisively and (to a certain level) amicably.

"Withdrawal or we will all die here."
People in the comments are missing the point.

Benevolent rulers were and are rare. When two meet on the field of battle, It is legend.
Baldwin and Saladin were rulers of their time. They were ruthless rulers. However for their time they were indeed mild and thoughtful men. Both men respected each other. The film softens history a fair bit. The film made me look up the real histories of Saladin and Baldwin.
Think you're buying too much into the myth versus reality.
There is no such thing as benevolence in high-stakes politics. If you're benevolent, you are naive, and if you are naive, you'll get stomped by the most rudimentary tricks in the book.
When you look up their history, you find out they were highly intelligent and educated men. Masters of the Lands. And formidable in battle.
I like how even though the king of Jerusalem was VISIBLY sick and Saladin didn’t see it as an opportunity to attack him. He showed empathy and even offered medical help to enemy and it highlights not only their respect for each other but their own character and integrity. Smh I love this movie 🥹

Saladin really cares for Baldwin's health for several reasons. But most of them all is that he knows that Baldwin can be trusted. It is a war, but a fair one. Nothing stupid is going to be done whilst Baldwin is alive. A new King can bring unreasonable chaos and an outcome that is eventually sub optimal
theres a reason why baldwin wanted godfrey's son balien to become king in this movie instead of sybilla's current husband guy de lusignan, who wanted war with salahdin. if he had actually agreed to become king, the christians would have held onto the jeruselam for a lot longer and richard the lionheart would not have had to ride into battle and fight with salahdin for 3 yrs nonstop.

To everyone who thinks that the soldiers were annoyed about having hiked across a sea of sand only to turn back after a minute long conversation that they didn't even get to participate in:
They were shaking in their boots, thinking that they're going to die any moment, only to hear that nah, we're going home.
@@jonathanlondon4265 yoo!!!war has not changed.."the poor fight the wars the rich dream up"
@@jonathanlondon4265 There were no conscripts in these armies, conscriptions and drafting were incredibly uncommon during the medieval period. Nearly the entirety of the soldiers you see in this scene are levied soldiers or mercenaries, eg they want to be there. In reality, they loved war, and they would be incredibly pissed that there was no battle.
Ancient and medieval warfare was utterly different from modern warfare, and the soldiers fighting then loved it dearly, in general that is.
maybe the muslim soldiers were annoyed because they wanted to go to heaven
