Pioneer DJ HDJ-CX vs Sennheiser HD 25 Headphones

- The Pioneer DJ HDJ-CX are that company’s stab at the venerable Sennheiser HD 25s, in that they are an extremely lightweight and minimalistic headphone of a type not usually associated with Pioneer DJ. They’re very good, with great sound, and a featherlight fit. The great selling point of the HD 25s, though, is their durability and modular design; how well the Pioneers will hold up over time is currently an unknown, and they’re definitely not as modular..

My HD 25 has outlived many different iterations of other DJ equipment throughout 15 years of use. During that time, it needed one new cable and a set of pads. All in all one of the best pieces of "tech" I ever bought. While the Pioneers are without a doubt very good, just the piece of mind that you can pick up spare parts for the Sennheiser basically everywhere (one club that I worked in even had a spare part drawer) is awesome.
Spare parts drawer for Sennheisers in a club. That's incredible!
@@digitaldjtips They did do a lot of video production (also for TV) there, where the 25 has been the de facto standard as well.
I've been using the hd25 for 15ish years, and aside from the pads that were worn after about 8 years, there's nothing bad I can say about them. They are the best headphones I've tried so far.
And those 70 ohms works like a charm. No distortion at all.
Sounds like you're a happy customer Jose!
Still prefer the Sennheiser HD 25. Easy to find the spare parts. Friendly user headphones & super quality. Yet, i’m gonna try the Pioneer DJ HDJ-CX for spare headphones. Nice reviews Phil. 🙌🏼🎧
Thanks for your kind words Izra!
I like this attempt on rivalry from Pioneer, they had previous decent crack when they released C70's out, but they never took off and didn't have detachable cable, the fact that these have a detachable cable is a big win for me personally, as I love that feature on DJ headphones, I wanna try these now, AIAIAI's and HD25 are all time greats, but a little bit of competition is always healthy.
Indeed!
My HD-25s have definitely been a Trigger’s broom over the years…I’ve replaced the earpads, cable, headband pads, and one driver. Big OFAH fan from Canada!
Ha ha, yeah they can potentially go on forever!
Sennheiser they’ve been the industry standard for years with a flat sound output and still used by the top DJs today, but personal preference is what matters. Keep up the good work Phil.
Thanks D17MOP!
I got myself a pair of the ONEODIO Pro 10. They were as cheap as chips… but amazing sound and feel. Perfect for my mixing and I have worn them for 6 hr sets and have been extremely comfortable. Comes with a bag, 2 cables, one which is coiled. Can be used with both size headphone sockets. A real bargain and a real find.
Seen those on Amazon! Glad they're working out for you.
Thank you for the review, I was about to get the HD 25s then Pioneer released the HDJ-CX. I'm definitely getting the HDJ-CX..
Cool, glad to help Anthony.
Dont do it, have my HD25 since 26 years. They are great Like the 1. Day.
@@StAyX1 I trust in Pioneer, they make gOOd DJ gear!
@@djanthonypereda mine broke in 3 months. hd is better
My HD 25's came with a coiled cable as well a straight cable. They also came with a spare pair of ear cups.
Yes. The "hd25 Plus" comes with extra pads and cable
Cool thanks for the info
Yes youre right!
I bought a pair of the HDJ CX a couple of weeks ago as I got them for a good price to replace my 23 year old pair of Technics. For anyone using them to record mixes at home and not necessarily use them in a Dj booth they have some serious bass. In hindsight I wish I’d gone with the HD 25 or even another pair of Technics for a more accurate sound.
my first set of hd25's only broke last year when i slipped with a screwdriver, they were bought in 2009 and id only replaced a set of ear pads. now on my 2nd set modified by customcans with a set of yaxi ear pads and could not be happier.
Glad you're loving them, they're a classic!
I have TWO pairs of HD 25s, SP I and II, for around 15-20 years. Replaced the cable, and ear pads on one, and the other has been fine since new. I had a pair of Dre Beats in that time, and they've long since bitten the dust. If Pioneer wants to step to Sennhieser, then they need to drastically cut the price. No one with sense is going to pay the same amount, and go with the Pioneer...
The Senns do indeed tend to last a long time!
Interesting fact: the hd25s (the predecessor to the hd25 we see all over the world), were originally used by concord pilots. They were chosen on the supersonic planes because they helped with extremely noisy conditions in the cockpit. Basically noise cancelling without the need for power. Then sennhieser realized how they could be used for consumers and the rest is history.
Thanks for the history lesson!
Trigger’s broom. Love it🤣.
Knew someone would get that!
Someone is trying to keep Pioneer happy…
Who?
Actually the Sennheiser HD25 I bought did came with spare ear cushions. Probably because I bought the blue edition, as the spare cushions were in black.
Cool!
Pioneer is a very good brand, perhaps the best. But this time, the Chinese seem to me at the flea market when they copy other brands. I have HD 25-1 II, and I wouldn*t want to change them one by aneone !🎧🎧🎧
There's a coiled cable attachment you can get or could for 15$ replacement, red black l/r plugs so you can swap for coiled and normal copper feed
Thanks for letting us know
@@digitaldjtips Great review mate! Just to add there are 3 different types of HD25s (HD 25 Light, HD 25, HD 25 Plus) the HD 25 Plus includes an Extra coiled cable, extra ear pads and a carry pouch for about $50 more. I've got 2 pairs 1 about 10yrs old made in Ireland the other about 6 months old made in Romania and I've found the Romanian made ones lack in both sound and build quality. Where are the ones you reviewed made in? Cheers
Funny, I've been using them for over a year now and I had the exact same complain about pressure at the top of the ear after few minutes of use. But because of the metal part on the band, you can reshape it a bit. Also, ear pads come out quite easily. Other than that, it has been perfect. I really like the coiled cable and the holder for the adapter, really useful.
I bought the pioneer after this video. I like the sound better than the hd25 I have since 2008.
The pioneer sound is better for monitoring\mixing.
The cushioning on the pioneer is really uncomfortable, puts a lot of pressure on ears which cause ear pains after 15 minutes of use. I replaced the pads with the hd25 pads and problem solved. But I realized that
in ear monitoring is the best.
Thanks for sharing
Phil have you ever thought of doing a video of alternative dj cans? Lots of vids on RUclips only concentrate on the usual suspects but we know you can buy much better headphones from different manufacturers out there. By the way nice video and enjoy the straight forward info and less waffle 👍
Thanks! And thanks for the idea
Tengo los 2 y sólo puedo decir, que por diseño, calidad y comodidad senheiser, y por sonido me inclino a los pioneros.
Gracias por su opinion
Sennheiser HD 25 PLUS comes with coiled cable and additional ear pads.
Thanks!
Hello, Phil. Greetings from Brazil! The HDJ X7 and HDJ CX are in the same price range. Which one do you recommend? Which has better audio quality?
Not tested both, sorry
Hello! Which headphones have better audio quality: HDJ CX or HDJ CUE 1
Not got them both here to compare, both sound fine for DJing
What should have been mentioned here is that if you're into music production the HD 25 is more useful for studio monitoring because of its flatter sound.
Agreed, although personally I'd never use either for studio monitoring hence wouldn't have thought to mention that.
I thought so too. Until I bought pair of Sennheiser IE 100 Pro. Which also have flat sound tuning, but with higher fidelity than the HD25.
I mentioned the IE 100 Pro because it's placed in similar price bracket and also designed for professional audio monitoring, albeit in ear monitoring.
@@digitaldjtips They're really fine for basic monitoring and a reason they've become such a classic. You're not going to release a track on it but that goes basically for all headphones.
They should've never stopped making the c70s. I still have them and they're the best headphones pioneer has ever made.
They were the closest Pioneer came in the past to this type of headphones, thanks for the reminder Kevin.
hdj-c70 was the bomb
As far as minimalist and modular design headphones, I prefer the AIAIAI TMA-2
Dj preset of TMA2 sounds awful compare to HD25. I've got both
They are definitely in the same ballpark, totally modular. Bit bigger and less minimalist, though.
Had the same pair of hd25s forever, I'll never use another pair of dj headphones
...hence my Technics comparison. They do tend to last.
Loving the HD25s for the past 10 years, but please Sony people, if you are reading this: BRING BACK THE MDR-v700dj! (Pioneer ones won't last, expensive and short life span is how I would describe my previous Pioneeer purchase of the kind.)
I endlessly broke my 700s back on the day, got through so many pairs!
Which one has the brighter sound?
What do you mean by brighter sound m7+1?
Ωραίο βίντεο δώσει
Commercial cinema speakers or BMB karaoke speakers are a lot LESS brutal, so will not damage peoples hearing.
Only one Choice, the real choice and not a simple Copy, the Sennheiser HD25! Thats it, nothing more to say! 30 years of buying parts to replace, you can also change everything you see, also a spiral cable, no matter what! That is why the Sennheiser are the best! I have my since 26 years now! Lets see Pioneer what can you bring? A Copy? Yeah uhm lame!
Still, the Pioneers are a nice enough pair of headphones
Im sorry but… what?
-Since when do hd25s not come in a coil cable version anymore? The sp2 version (iirc) came with one, and the kbl spiral is at least listed as a replacement part on sennheisers website.
-What do you mean uncomfortable? I wear glasses and my head is not exactly small, yet i find the hd25s very comfy specifically BECAUSE of their on ear design and the soft pads - unlike headphones with over ear cups, which usually press against my temples.
-And isolation is excellent, again, BECAUSE of the rather tight fit and the on ear design, paired with soft ear pads.
Having said that, there is not much reason to go for the pios: easily detachable cable is the last thing i would want on something i use to perform, and the adapter clip is imho pointless since you rarely ever have to take off the 1/4“ to begin with.
No need to be sorry. Yes, it is possible to get coiled cables for the HD 25s, of course, but they didn't come in the box of the review pair at the same price as the Pios. Comfort is an individual thing. I stand by my isolation comments, but again, depending on expectations, head/ear shape, and what you're comparing them against, other opinions are available! Thanks for the feedback hoozn.
Exactly!
Have pioneers for around 1.5 years. Sound, comfort for me is perfect, bought them because of basier sound. But after not much of use they broke, plastic on a part where it is twisting broke, on other side there are already cracks. Researched, it is quite common problem and haven't found any spare parts. So not recomend them, buying HD25's now.
Agreed, we've heard this a lot and it was one of our concerns right at the start
Sennheiser cable comes out the right ear cup. Pioneer looks standard out the left side.
Indeed it does.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
If I am not mistaken, the CX is the 3rd (on-ear headphone) attempt from Pioneer for beating the Sennheiser HD 25.
Have had all the HDJ range and apart from the X10 they all sounded SH*T (despite the higher price tag).
I think it's safe to say that Pioneer should gave up this fight...
Think they may have got it right this time.
wait what? my Sennheiser HD 25 has a coil cable.
Yeah, sometimes they are provided with a coiled cable it seems.
I love pioneer but there headphones doesn’t last longer than 1 year! 🤦🏻♂️ HD 25’s all the way 🙌🏼
HDJ broke after 2 weeks .. Sound is top .
Pioneer hdj-cx: Great sound but the worst built material. That part which is under the headband easily broke after a few months with normal usage because they used the cheapest plastic material. That cable is also vulnerable. After 1,5 year both headband parts were broke and the right speaker stopped working. Pioneer headphones overall sounds great but they super fragile
Sorry to hear that but thanks for your feedback
go for HDJ 10x
Wanna share your reasons? I am sure the community would find them useful. :)
That's why I sold my one year old HD25.
There is no future for this new hdj-cx lol
I’ve been using Voda Crossfade M 100’s For a long time now pretty durable but not the Djing style headphones is what I think because the cups are bolted have no action and lill heavy so got the HD 25’s they super light weight easy to cary and can use it for any purpose kind of headphones but the downside is you can wear them for long not even 20 mins any day its better to have over ear than on-ear, hdj 10x is so perfect that sub frequencies sound so good 20hz sounds way better than any of the djing headphones and they are super comfy they heavy but who cares when its comfy
Had the HDJ CX’sfor 7 months. Broke at the hinges :) DON’T BUY THESE HEADPHONES!
Thanks for the info.
@@digitaldjtips I bought CX's 1 year ago and Inges are cracking right now! Had previous C70, broke head band twice....
Paid by Pioneer?
Who?
this channel should be renamed pioneer dj😂😂😂
djtips.co/funding
dont buy this pioneers, lasted less than 6 months and broke
Pioneer is dead and burried. A company that has nothing to offer except a crappy copy past of a decades old established headphones is not worth our time and money
Pioneer DJ is a single brand that does everything from beginner controllers to pro gear, speakers, headphones etc. They have far more to offer than crappy copies of other people's products (these are not crappy, by the way), and as for dead and buried? Come back in 5 years and we'll see if you're right. You can take or leave individual products, but Id argue with your statements.
Yeah exactly dead company! /100% sign!
I want to see Kuro revival.
One thing you’ll notice they took that grip control from the X series which is perfect for long sets because your all sweaty and stuff so that’s a lil better and also they have a steel band not a plastic one but regardless I have senhissers and I would like to buy the CX just to see for my self as a DJ but pioneer is the reason everyone is a dj today so I can see why you say that but not everyone can be a dj theirs an ear for it it’s an art not a oh let’s see if I can do this it is that but more when you put effort and time and money and strategy $$$$
Pioneer is not dead
hybrid hd25 and
aiaiai
shame
