  • Billed as the most legendary live performance of all time, Queen stole the show in 1985 when Live Aid was in full swing. This +20 min set was jam packed with Queen's hits. We broke up the reaction into 2 parts since it's pretty long, so stay tuned as we finish up editing the 2nd half of this, which we'll post soon!

Anyone remember what it was like back when Live Aid was on air? Which bands did you look forward to performing? What was the general sentiment at the time? Anyone actually at the concert? Love to relive a bit of nostalgia through you!

Freddie was born to be a performer! I remember having the Night at the Opera 8-track tape when I was in high school. 1976 I think. It's still an excellent album to listen to. Most young folks actually KNOW Queen songs, they just don't realize it's Queen.

Their last live performance was 1 year after this. Freddie was probably already Hiv-positive here at Live Aid, but may not have known yet, but he was starting to get sick a year after this performance. The 1986 Wembley concert is on RUclips. He still could sing really well, but looked kind of pale. He could, and did, sing well right to the end.

When Queen was added to the long list of acts the concert at Wembley had already sold out, so this wasn't even a Queen crowd! Elton John, backstage, said all the other performers were drawn to the tv monitors to watch. It is said David Bowie, who performed right after Queen, said "How in hell am I supposed to follow that?"

The funny thing about Queen at Live Aid.. There are so many little details that elude people who sees it for the first time... First - Queen was a late addition, all of the tickets were sold out when they were added, thus none of the audience came to see Queen, second - they rehearsed that specific performance for an entire week, before performing on stage. Wembley was jam packed 80.000 people, but the performance was broadcast live to JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, where a similar number of people were waching the concert as well. It was also broadcast all over the world to TV's in epoples living rooms, which means 1.2 billion people were watching. Freddie while dancing with the camera man, had enough presence, to "save" the mic wire from being torn out of his microphone during the song, Finally if you notice the red lamp on stage (Leave stage now) turns on, just as they finish the set.

What I liked is that when he was playing with the cameraman, he gives a look to the audience, like, They’re filming us, but I’m singing for you and you’re singing for me. Queen’s concerts, no matter how many people there, still felt intimate, like sharing a secret, something special, something only between them and Queen.

Yeah, the movie really opened Lulu's eyes too and gave he a new found appreciation for Freddie and Queen! I think the movie generated almost a billion dollars, which is what you would expect some Marvel summer blockbuster flick would do, so many new fans are really showing appreciation for Queen!

How can you possibly stop this performance in the middle. You lose all the building momentum when you come back and do the second part. There have been a number of music sites that have voted this as the greatest live performance of all time. As someone else commented, this wasn't even a Queen crowd. The tickets for the event were fully sold out before Queen had ever committed to appear. However, they were a Queen crowd after this performance. Great reaction

Lulu, BLESS YOUR SOFT HEART💕 I saw you tear up and start sniffling when John commented on Freddie's time being cut short💔
(It takes a softie to know a softie)
BTW John, I think what Queen fans were probably saying is that Brian May's hair was/still IS just like that😄(I've always wondered how on earth he is able to control it!)
I do always think of this time period as John Deacon's "dandelion-fuzz hair" or "pom-pom hair" stage tho!

Don't want to make you feel jealous or anything, but I was in the crowd at Live Aid watching Freddie getting us all going with "Radio Ga Ga". If you weren't a Queen fan before you certainly left one that day. It was amazing and we all kept chanting for Queen to come back on, it was pretty flat after they went off. Apparently David Bowie and Elton John didn't even want to go after Queen as they had stole the show and thought it was pointless. I'm 51 now and Freddie was/is my hero, he was such a beautiful person inside and . I also saw them live twice the following year at Wembley in July 1986 and Freddie's finale appearance at Knebworth in August 1986, Queen flew over us in helicopters, they were amazing and Freddie has been my hero ever since RIP.
After watching many many reaction videos I need to give credit where credit is due and I love watching you two as you're so respectful of the band and Freddie and you actually love watching them and respect how talented they all were, keep up the good reactions guys love them. Much love from Manchester UK. Stay safe x

@@ericsila4071 To be honest I switched off the movie after I realised that many of the facts were untrue and probably fictionalised for the golden screen, for instance Freddie never knew that he had AIDS before the Live Aid Concert in 1985 and only got diagnosed in April 1987, and he was the first member to branch out alone as depicted by the movie !!!!! It also never showed Freddie smiling, he used to smile all the time and the movie made him out to be something of a miserable person ! He had one of the most amazing personalities and by all accounts was extremely funny xxx

I didn't know too much about Queen before I watched Bohemian Rhapsody, but when I was 7(2013), Borhap started playing on the radio and I was like, "I don't know what the heck this is, but it's pretty darn awesome!" I asked my mom about it, but I couldn't describe it well enough for her to understand! When the movie came out, my friend showed me the song and I was like, "This is familiar" so she told me to go watch the movie. I've been a Queenie since then!!!

I can remember watching this in 1985 it was the first real event on this scale. 24.5 million people in the UK tuned in leaving the streets empty in towns. I believe about 1.5 billion around the word watched. Queen stole the show that day but Led Zeppelin gave the worst performance to the point Phil Collins said after he had walked out it would have saved some face on Led Zeppelin's part, Oh and Phil Collins played both Wembley and the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia something that could not be done today since we no longer have Concorde. It was a completely different time and given the chose I'd love to go back to the 80's. Freddie was once asked by a reporter what he did in the band " Play The Audience" was his reply. The camera man that had a Freddie encounter passed away sometime ago but as you said what a memory.

WOODSTOCK WAS PROBABLY THE MOST MEMORABLE CONCERT OF ALL TIME! BECAUSE, EVEN, IF QUEEN DID A GREAT SHOW AT LIVE AID, THE OTHER BANDS WERE NOT AT THE TOP! NOT GOOD! AT WOODSTOCK, ALL THE MOST LEGENDARY BANDS PLAYED, EXCEPT THE DOORS AND THE ROLLING STONES, BUT, THEY ALL PLAYED LEGENDARY PERFORMANCES! THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE! LOOK AT THE WHO, SANTANA, JOE COCKER SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE, JANIS JOPLIN, AND THE BEST OF ALL JIMI HENDRIX DESTROYING THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER, TO PROTEST AGAINST THE VIETNAM WAR! ONLY CRAZY PERFORMANCES! AT LIVE AID, ONLY QUEEN WAS REALLY GOOD!.....

I was 17 years old and out of school for the summer. Fortunately I was off from work for the day & I sat in front of the TV all day long watching music on and off with my mom. I only moved to get something to drink and mom was doing other things. It was absolutely astonishing!! Phil Collins was an incredible man as well because he played at Wembley in London and then jump on a plane to fly to New York and perform there. U2 was really good and Queen just took it all. Paul McCartney and Elton John were really good. I remember seeing the first band, status quo, and I thought to myself that if this was good it was going to be outstanding!!! ❤️
