I've been using my WD HUB with 1TB drive built in with all my music/vids etc. I do have back up copies of everything on external TB HDs. I know i would need to back up all content to format hd to the shield. After doing that can i hook my hd back to pc to add all content back onto hd to work on the shield. Sorry its long message and hope you dont mind
*Update - ran further ethernet tests on the Chromecast and was constantly getting around 300mb* - so both Ethernet and Wifi speed tests are very close on both devices with the Shield having the slight edge.

I have both of these devices and they’re both fantastic, for heavier tasks the shield is definitely much better but for every day streaming they’re both pretty much at the same level performance wise.
For a lot of your tests you aren't running the same version of the software. Also for the Kodi test you should have the exact same setup / plugins on both... It makes a difference. Also, there is the ai upscaling on the shield as well as Plex server. There's different reasons to own either unit but I agree.... If you only want to stream the Chromecast makes a lot of sense.

Two major issues with the Chromecast Google TV: 1. $70+ for Ethernet; $90-$100 frankensteining Ethernet + Storage + SD card. The Chromecast Google TV has 8GB total which is also being used by the OS. Wi-Fi is a poor option for your primary TV. The Chromecast Google TV, _they need to rename again removing "Chromecast,"_ is fine for a kid's bedroom or a guest bedroom or some low to medium use general use room e.g. office, pool TV, etc. However for a master bedroom or family room I'd highly recommend the Nvidia Shield and Pro if you can afford it. You can also side load "Google TV" GUI and go back and forth with Android TV. Opening times .. if you have some cheap add-on SD card on your Nvidia Shield you can slow it down immensely .. or .. not all build APKs are the same.

Another fantastic review I currently have the 4k firestick and I'm considering purchasing the Nivida shield pro and put the firestick 4k on another television in the house.
Funny, watching nothing more than which app opens faster actually put me to sleep.... Not any useful content here who really cares if an application might open one second faster on a Chromecast considering how much more a shield is capable of doing. Not like anyone would want a Chromecast if you can go for the shield. Would have been better content in the video if he showed some of the differences between the interface and menus and what it's actually capable of instead of just opening random apps side by side. No useful information...

Great comparison. I see that the Chromecast is vulkan enabled. Since it's using a Mali G31 GPU, does this mean that there is a way that vulkan could be enabled in other android boxes using s905x2/3?
Nvidia shield pro has a stronger processor, more audio codec support with truehd, dts etc 🤷🏿. It's an advantage worth getting my opinion especially if you have a surround sound setup.
I have Both! my Nvidia shield is my primary for stream and games, and I have chromecast as backup! but if you can afford the Shield! the Chromecast is the closest thing to the shield for 50$

I have a beelink king pro and NS Pro. I prefer the king pro to be honest and don't find that much difference. NS has slightly the better picture, but the King is far more user friendly.

Thanks for the interesting video TDUK. I have the 2017 Shield, the 2019 tube shaped Shield, and two Mibox 4's. Actually I am quite satisfied with all of them. Edit-I also have two Fire devices which I am not using at the moment.
I have a Nvidia shied 2015 & 2017. That wired speed is why I have the Nvidia Shield TV... I’m getting over 600mb upload speeds with my AMPLIFI Alien router.

Can you do a voice search in Plex using the new chromecast? My Sony TV uses Android TV and is unable to do this. I am also unable to do a voice search in RUclips while inside of the RUclips app in my Sony TV.
NVIDIA Shield has always been stuck in a very awkward middle ground to me. Its way overkill for everyday set top box tasks like streaming from IPTV, Apks, Koldy, Netflix, etc but not quite powerful enough for hassle free higher end emulation/gaming either. I feel like something like a Chromecast or even a Firestick 4k (If you already have one or can get one for cheap) gets the streaming/basic emulation stuff done fine while even a low end PC can better take care of the heavier stuff you'd want a shield for and some.
Its a very going point, so the Chromecast is $50 and very good and the Shield is $200 ... its a massive jump. Would be great for a $100 Android TV device as something in-between the two.
@@TechDoctorUK Exactly what I was thinking to add but my previous comment was too long haha. If Chromecast came out with a '$100 Chromecast cube'' like device with HDMI 2.1 and 2x specs than that would truly be the sweet spot for every realistic streaming/gaming set top box expectation without having to over pay for a shield. The Chromecast was a very welcome replacement for the firestick but the market has sorely needed a device that sits between the Firestick and the shield in both specs and price for a very long time now. Hopefully either Google or Xaomi does this with their next streaming device offerings.
You make it seem as if the Shield has an inferior gaming performance than the Chromecast and Firestick when it is the complete opposite. The Shield blows them both out of the water in terms of overall performance. Especially gaming emulation and being able to create your own stable plex media servers and just about everything else you can throw at it. The Chromecast definitely is a cool little device, but if you're really looking for a comparison then you'll never beat the Shield lol. Let's be real.
@@TechDoctorUK This just in: Apparently the New official Android TV certified dynalink 4k box is essentially a Chromecast Ultra with a bit more useable storage and HDMI 2.1 for the same $50 price. Edit: It also appears to be using a USB type A port which saves us the hassle of having to use any adapters 👍
Speed tests and app startups are all well and good but the majority are pretty similar especially for streaming. Shield is badly let down by proprietary access to play store and no mouse integration (and adds). A review on things like the Formuler Z8 would inform us more if boxes were compared for there ease of use, full access to apps, integrated mouse out of the box, built in software (IPTV stuff), and any real differences in android versions as later versions might not be absolutely necessary. Oh, and power supply voltages ie. 5v or 12v or oddball stuff like the connector on the shield (and we know why they do that), for people that are going full digital in their campervan builds 😁. Sorry to waffle 😏
I read somewhere that the ethernet port on the Chromecast power brick is limited to fast ethernet and not gigabit, that probably explains that difference in performance
I have very bad wifi speed on google chromecast 4k...for router I have google mesh.....chromecast connecting only 2.4ghz...not 5ghz...I dont know why but maybe this in an issue for slow speed...all HD movies are lacking

I got the Shield TV PRO but not because it's better than the Chromecast...I got it because of that insane So upscaling it does for videos... anyone with a 4k TV deciding between these two should get the Shield TV Pro. Once you see how amazing the upscaling is, you'll be blown away.

Go shield boys, when you buy usb c hub and the extra storage the price comes the same. The remote of the shield is from another planet compared to the small cheap plastic Google remote THAT HAS NO BACKLIGHT. Google does not support bitstreaming DTS formats. And the most annoying ...because its underpowered google has audio sync issues....
Just rewatched your other speed test with the FireStick and Tivo and Netflix seems to load faster on both, could this be due to GoogleTV Chromecast might be using DDR3 RAM?. The Kodi speed is surprising but I have decided Kodi is unnecessary esp for lower powered and low storage devices - I keep Kodi on my phone for evaluation for the time being.

Maximum download speed in my area of the U.K , even with fibre , is 35mb down and 8mb up , so am I correct in saying gigabit lan is of no advantage to me , therefor the chrome cast will be adequate for me, given that I don't do any emulation.

Weird question! Have you attempted to try and install the Stock Launcher from the NVIDIA Sheild or any Android TV Launcher APK and install it on the Chromecast with Google TV?!? Reason I ask is, I don't have alot of streaming services and the lack of Plex integration is a little sad! So with at least the older launcher it's less cluttered and more Plex friendly

Impressed with Nvidia comparator but got to put into considerations that Nvidia constantly puts an update and you know this will continue and Chromecast tv has android 10 vs 9 ill have to rewind so maybe re-visit this once Nvidia pits that update that I'm sure it will come sooner then later, also $50 but then you need to spend for it to be wired (not sure why wifi performed crazy better) and storage. Still impressed with Chromecast TV vs maybe then firesticks
The app library on google tv is so small that the power of the shield is totally worthless and no one needs video upscaling unless they are watching 360p videos which no one does anymore.

Geforce now is were it's at for gaming. I've tried a few cloud gaming services. Including Stadia,xbox game pass and geforce now on the shield. Geforce now was by far the best. It worked well on my pc and phone also. I almost never had a problem with lag. Game pass and Stadia were unplayable at times. Especially game pass. Also the shield can run some games witn heavy graphics like tomb raider and metal gear. Out of all these devices. There's one more that's better than them all. That being the Nvidia Shield K1 Tablet. I've owned a few of them. Its basically the exact same as the shield tv. Just portable.
Doc, you need more storage space on your Shield lol. BTW, I finally got my Chromecast w/Google TV & Netflix promo in the mail today. Unfortunately, I'll be sending it right back to Google. Netflix won't honor the Google 6-month credit on the 🦃☪ account 😢 I'll pick up a non-netflix promo Chromecast locally on BF instead. But I did get first hand glimps of the new UI for an hour. That new remote on the chromecast is really tiny. It looked smaller in person than it does on RUclips. P.S. It sucks that the built-in USB-C port is limited to USB 2.0 speeds. That's a real bummer.

Why does the Nvidia Shield colours looked completely washed out compared to the Chromecast? A lot of people have been complaining about this on the shield. What a shame.
Whilst there is no way that the Chromecast can match the Shield, it does show just what can be done with a much lower S905X3 spec device. But whilst you are making comparisons, try another one at some time comparing the Shield with a decent mobile phone, with USB-C 3 output for data and video, using a dock. Take a used Huwaei Mate 20 Pro that has an Antutu score of around 370000 and in theory it should blow the Shield out of the water for power as well as retaining the same kind of versatility.
I would love to see a round up video between all of the streaming devices. I was holding out for the Chromecast but I finally gave up waiting and got the Tivo device. I know it is still buggy but I still think it is a good device. Your videos are great. Thank you.
The new Chromecast is what the Tivo should have been. They have very similar specs but the software is buggy on the Tivo. I have put the Tivo away and will do all of my Android TV tutorials on Chromescast and Shield. Tivo has a better remote though !

I have all 3 (Firestick 4k, Nvidia Shield & Chromecast) and they are all awesome. They all do the same thing as each other, pretty much.

Btw the difference I notice most between wired and wireless is latency . I go from about 43ms ping down to 19ms when wired.

I read somewhere that the ethernet port on the Chromecast power brick is limited to fast ethernet and not gigabit, that probably explains that difference in performance

I have very bad wifi speed on google chromecast 4k...for router I have google mesh.....chromecast connecting only 2.4ghz...not 5ghz...I dont know why but maybe this in an issue for slow speed...all HD movies are lacking

I got the Shield TV PRO but not because it's better than the Chromecast...I got it because of that insane So upscaling it does for videos... anyone with a 4k TV deciding between these two should get the Shield TV Pro. Once you see how amazing the upscaling is, you'll be blown away.
If you use an ethernet adaptor for the chrome cast then you should add that to the pice comparison.

Go shield boys, when you buy usb c hub and the extra storage the price comes the same. The remote of the shield is from another planet compared to the small cheap plastic Google remote THAT HAS NO BACKLIGHT. Google does not support bitstreaming DTS formats. And the most annoying ...because its underpowered google has audio sync issues....
Just rewatched your other speed test with the FireStick and Tivo and Netflix seems to load faster on both, could this be due to GoogleTV Chromecast might be using DDR3 RAM?. The Kodi speed is surprising but I have decided Kodi is unnecessary esp for lower powered and low storage devices - I keep Kodi on my phone for evaluation for the time being.
I think Kodi 18.9 might be optimised for Android 10

Maximum download speed in my area of the U.K , even with fibre , is 35mb down and 8mb up , so am I correct in saying gigabit lan is of no advantage to me , therefor the chrome cast will be adequate for me, given that I don't do any emulation.

Exactly the comparison I was looking for... But what about the AV support on apps? Atmos,HDR, Dolby vision etc,. need a detailed comparison of those...
I have gone through 3 and been on the phone with google. No atmost through any type of file playing apps. Prime does play atmos from only.

Weird question! Have you attempted to try and install the Stock Launcher from the NVIDIA Sheild or any Android TV Launcher APK and install it on the Chromecast with Google TV?!?
Reason I ask is, I don't have alot of streaming services and the lack of Plex integration is a little sad! So with at least the older launcher it's less cluttered and more Plex friendly

I have both device but the nvidia shield tv wins in everyday usage .
Impressed with Nvidia comparator but got to put into considerations that Nvidia constantly puts an update and you know this will continue and Chromecast tv has android 10 vs 9 ill have to rewind so maybe re-visit this once Nvidia pits that update that I'm sure it will come sooner then later, also $50 but then you need to spend for it to be wired (not sure why wifi performed crazy better) and storage. Still impressed with Chromecast TV vs maybe then firesticks
The app library on google tv is so small that the power of the shield is totally worthless and no one needs video upscaling unless they are watching 360p videos which no one does anymore.

If you don't care about Dolphin emulation or having a Plex Server then the Shield Tube is enough.

Geforce now is were it's at for gaming. I've tried a few cloud gaming services. Including Stadia,xbox game pass and geforce now on the shield. Geforce now was by far the best. It worked well on my pc and phone also. I almost never had a problem with lag. Game pass and Stadia were unplayable at times. Especially game pass.
Also the shield can run some games witn heavy graphics like tomb raider and metal gear. Out of all these devices. There's one more that's better than them all. That being the Nvidia Shield K1 Tablet. I've owned a few of them. Its basically the exact same as the shield tv. Just portable.
Doc, you need more storage space on your Shield lol. BTW, I finally got my Chromecast w/Google TV & Netflix promo in the mail today. Unfortunately, I'll be sending it right back to Google. Netflix won't honor the Google 6-month credit on the 🦃☪ account 😢 I'll pick up a non-netflix promo Chromecast locally on BF instead. But I did get first hand glimps of the new UI for an hour. That new remote on the chromecast is really tiny. It looked smaller in person than it does on RUclips.
P.S. It sucks that the built-in USB-C port is limited to USB 2.0 speeds. That's a real bummer.

You can't use that credit on this Turkey account!" Well, you win some, you lose some. Yeah, that remote is too tiny. Whilst there is no way that the Chromecast can match the Shield, it does show just what can be done with a much lower S905X3 spec device.
But whilst you are making comparisons, try another one at some time comparing the Shield with a decent mobile phone, with USB-C 3 output for data and video, using a dock. Take a used Huwaei Mate 20 Pro that has an Antutu score of around 370000 and in theory it should blow the Shield out of the water for power as well as retaining the same kind of versatility.

I would love to see a round up video between all of the streaming devices. I was holding out for the Chromecast but I finally gave up waiting and got the Tivo device. I know it is still buggy but I still think it is a good device. Your videos are great. Thank you.
The new Chromecast is what the Tivo should have been. They have very similar specs but the software is buggy on the Tivo. I have put the Tivo away and will do all of my Android TV tutorials on Chromescast and Shield. Tivo has a better remote though !
I don't understand why the comparison with shield tv VS chromecast. Shield tv will rip apart the chromecat. There's no match against Shield tv.
Lets say all i want to do is watch Netflix. Do I need to spend $200+ on a Shield TV Pro or will the $50 Chromecast be enough - that is what I was trying to show in the video.

That was due to the capture card, so nothing to do with the actual Shield itself
