This... I hate the Ridge wallet so much... It's fascinating how it's actually a condescending product, they cater to and abuse ignorant people. If you want that type of wallet for some reason, you buy the OG version off of Alibaba for a fraction of the price (yes, the Ridge is a clone). I've been using mine daily for a month, and I love it. The remote can switch the tv's hdmi channel, handle the volume, and the voice recognition (on the remote itself) accross all the connected streaming platforms is spotless. This might be my best purchase of the year, and it's exactly what I was hoping for, a unified spotify/netflix/prime/plex/youtube/steamlink/twitch streaming device on my tv.
I live in Canada and Google TV was the only device that somehow allowed me to sign up AND download HBO Max. I had to use a credit card for purchase of membership but that's it. It has access to almost every app and the interface is simple and clean. Its not the fastest and sometimes is a bit laggy in menu but those minor complaints are heavily outweighed by its functionality. I bought a Nvidia Shield Pro and it could not access HBO Max even with VPN. So I've officially switched to this one and its been pretty reliable. For 50 bucks I've just bought one for every TV in the house.
@@Bizzare77777 I haven't tried, tbh. I will caveat that these are cheaper but the rule of 'you get what you pay for' still rings true. Ads did not cover a quality product. I would gladly pay more for the Apple TV again. It works. No bugs and the quality and connectivity is very good.

Just picked one up for $19 from Walmart. It’s a big improvement on my old chromecast and makes my fire stick redundant. A plus is that the remote controls the tv’s volume, power, and input selections 😀
Considering Chromecasts are the only good option for streaming Oculus Quests, I would have really appreciated if you tested the casting performance on the new Google TV Chromecast, to see if it's higher hardware gives better picture quality and response rate. Especially since the third rev Chromecast is over 2 years old now and couldn't handle 4K, that extra hardware likely makes a difference.
I have this one and it can't even receive video from sources other than RUclips without a ton of lag. Casting my phone's display is actually slightly better but still a lot of lag. I can't recommend this to anyone unless they just want to stream netflix etc but this has no benefit over a roku or firestick then. Going to try with an ethernet adapter because I suspect the issue is with upload bandwidth rather than download within the local network. Only problem is I don't know if my phone and chromecast will even see each other as ethernet devices.

Help me understand the point of a Chromecast, what additional features do you get if you have a modern smart TV? They already have casting off a mobile device, WiFi and Ethernet connectivity, multiple USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, built in support for almost all external storage and wireless peripherals, an internet browser, streaming apps and support for third party apps through an App Store of some sort as well. I love Stadia. It's worked great for me so far. It's literally someone saying "here use my computer to play your game, all you have to do is buy the game from us."
I finally got a Stadia Premier Edition with the purchase of Cyberpunk and I have to say, I honestly feel spoiled by Stadia now. Games like The Division 2 run EXTREMELY faster and smoother than it ever did on my XBox, not to mention, the graphics looks incredible! I even played the game side by side with my Xbox to see the differences and they were clearly showing. I was officially convinced to purchase another month of Stadia, including a month of Ubisoft+ to give me more of a variety of games to play. Every game I played on Stadia has ran the way you expect a game to run, but better than it would run on a console. Stadia really shows that streaming is the future for gaming. Yes, the first year for Stadia has been bad, I also was one of the people that talked down on Stadia, but now that I moved out and got better internet, Stadia works like a charm! I’m hooked and I’m going to be staying with Stadia.
Lol same🙋🏻♂️. Just got the premiere with cyberpunk and am enjoying it. TBH I'm pleasently surprised by stadia and think they have what it takes. It has worked great at my house with 100mbps Max. Although, at my sister's or mom's house, who have over 200mbps, it’s unstable. I tried both Ethernet and wifi. I’m hoping they can iron out the details.
I'm surprised Linus didn't talk about how it compares with various smart TVs. Is it worth it as a replacement for the built in android os that TVs from Sony, Samsung and LG run? My Sony can be a little finicky with some apps like Plex, interested to know if this would be worth it for that. Also does it support CEC? There's no way I could expect my wife to deal with yet another remote control.
I just replaced 2015 Sony Android TV, where the TV couldn't even stream Netflix anymore, with CWGTV and its just amazing. If it's plugged into MHL port, most operations can be performed from your current TV remote.
I really prefer Samsung when it comes down to displays. However, I despise Tizen as a TV OS. It has all the apps I normally use, but lacks a lot of the smart functionality that Android TV has. Android TV also has an infinitely prettier and more responsive UI than Samsung's.
I googled various plex issues that I'm having into Google and came across a forum that recommended a chromecast. Never searched directly for Chromecast but was recommended this video on my YT home screen. Nothing to see here. P.s I'm still not buying it

And it had a Chromecast Ultra built in on top of a really great Android TV interface for 30 bucks less than an actual Chromecast Ultra

oh wow 70 dollars huh, I got mine when they restocked about 4 weeks after it came out for the base MSRP of 50 dollars from Google's website. It probably is just more expensive in Japan because of the currency difference and stuff like that. Plus Japan has a lot of taxes on technology.

Some do and it's excellent, I just wish LTT did as well. And of course, I understand that prices change in different regions, as well as exchange rates, but the point isn't to stay accurate in the future, it's to be informative to the viewer at the time of release.

The problem I have which is not mentioned is that Google only allows you to use FAT32 external storage. I have a large TV and decided to watch 4K movie which is about 60 GB in size. I tried stream it from a NAS but it keeps lagging very badly. So I bought the PD charger, PD usb hub and cable, got the cast running only to see that it doesnt recognize the exterbal HDD which is NTFS. So you're stuck with maximum file size of 4 GB which is pointless for 4K. You should bear this in mind when you buy it. Alternatively I bought MiBox wich has build-in USB port with native NTFS support. The GoogleTV blows it out in raw speed though!

@@Mad-Lad-Chad It works app-to-app, e.g. if you cast a RUclips video from mobile/desktop to the Firestick, it opens in the RUclips app. For other things, the Firestick has Miracast, so I know it can cast the entire display from either a wifi-connected Windows PC or an Android device (those are the ones I've tried with mine).
I still think that it sucks that they killed the Chromecast Audio. Those were a great idea. You could cast to something like a stereo and since it had TosLink, it was able to transport the digital audio to the DAC for a better output. I still have a couple of them, but once they die, I can't replace them.
They use the absolute minimum viable processor to run Android TV, so any dedicated device is more powerful. You can actually play games on a Chromecast now.
Just finished cancelling my cable bill and switched to youtube tv and was setting it up to work with the chromecast when this linus vid popped up in my recommended, perfect timing. Honestly Im not a big fan of streaming services but I finally bit the bullet on youtube tv because it was 10$ less and gave a lot more features than cox did. Not trying to advertise but heres some things I really like about it already. 1. Unlimited DVR, you can just set up to record every single show you like and you get any episode thats played on live tv. It can also record an infinite amount of channels at once and all of the data is stored on their servers not your hard drive. So basically you can get terabytes of tv recordings 2. You can fast forward any tv recordings some other services dont let you do this which is messed up to begin with 3. They have a decent movie selection, its nothing amazing but its got actual good movies and not mostly b list junk, its nice to add to the rotation of hulu and netflix now. 4. Up to three people can use it at the same time, before I would need a cable box in each room which costs an extra 10$ a month per cable box, it also lets you use personal accounts like netflix does. 5. You can use it on any device. If your device supports youtube it supports youtube tv obviously. Now I can watch live tv anywhere with wifi (or if I want to eat through my phone data) instead of being stuck at the cable box. Overall so far I give it a 8/10 I just wish it was still 50 a month not a fan of the price hike but its still cheaper than my cable was for 75. Looking forward to getting it working with chromecast so I can just lazily tell my tv what to play.
Only thing missing really is some sort of private listening mode. Maybe when casting they could add an update so that you can listen via earphones on your phone?
I love Stadia. I've rarely used my PC here for ~10 month. Being able to play the same game on the TV, in my home-office, in the office, in bed or on the toilet without any downloads is the best upgrade of my gaming experience, since switching from the SNES to the PlayStation 1. But I would not recommend it for e-sports due to the latency some software is able to notice (wired is a must too!) ... :)
I bought one several months ago because the 70" LG 4k TV I have in my living room was one of their cheapest 30hrz models of 2016 (I got it on heavy discount in 2017) & the processor in it lags hard when streaming content with post processing turned on ... plus LG's pre-ThinQ interface sucks ... my solution was to offload all of the streaming tasks to this chrome cast, so that the limited brains of the TV only have to work on post processing. Yes I could upgrade to a newer/better model, but I don't need to waste the money & generate more E-waste when this one still works just fine. The chrome cast itself works good, but that suppository grade remote is a joke compared to the magic wand remote that came with my LG CX PC monitor & I wish I could find a 3rd party one that could run my TV, Chrome cast, and sound bar all at the same time.
Another one here. \o Seems Linus hasn’t read the Jack Buser interview yet. Stadia is developing a bunch of in-house games and already planning all the way up to 2023...
I love my Chromecast with Google TV, but they really need to make a Pro version with more storage, more RAM and a faster processor. I'm pretty sure a lot of "pro" users have added a dongle so they can add more storage. That is really needed because otherwise it fills up fast and apps stop working or show down really bad.
For my 2 pennies I am actually enjoying my GTV more than my Apple 4K TV...not sure why but I do like the picture even on my 1080p. Like what HiFi said it has a very clinical picture quality which were my thoughts too and even 1080p is very well detailed. UI is decent and smooth too and an bit more interesting than the Apple UI imo. Another very nice surprise is the audio sound quality over Bluetooth, it really is very, very good. I have a Bluetooth receiver connected to my amp which picks up all codecs from SBC to LDAC and whatever the GTV is operating on it is very good. It's clean, clear and detailed and easily listened to. I compared it to Amazon HD via Topping E30 DAC at 192khz and through the same amp and in all honesty which ever codec it is it's very close to that quality on my system. For £59....I mean, shut up!
Something worth noting: My Chromecast Ultra I bought a couple of years ago has an Ethernet port (100mbps) built into the power adapter and fed through the same one microUSB port.

Agreed, stadia is going nowhere as there is too much money in it. Plus they would have to refund people who have purchased games or keep the service running so they can play them
@@radiatorninja7149 I think what is happening now though is more important. They are looking to sell the stadia software directly to game developers which means the Devs can sell games directly without having to go through Microsoft/Sony store and pay their fees (not saying that still won't but they are least have another option). This is even more important to poor countries that can't afford £500 games consoles. Buy allowing Devs to sell direct even if it is just to poor countries allows for another revenue stream. If they do sell in the West then the fact that get skip the stores puts money directly in their pocket and takes it from Sony etc. But by also getting Devs to code games to sell direct on a white label platform they will also automatically work on stadia meaning more games. Why have a studio making crap games at a high price when you can sell software to Devs who they make games for free.

This might be my best purchase of the year, and it's exactly what I was hoping for, a unified spotify/netflix/prime/plex/youtube/steamlink/twitch streaming device on my tv.
Just like the fire stick 4k can?
You can use your tv remote to control the Chromecast, too.

2. You can fast forward any tv recordings some other services dont let you do this which is messed up to begin with
Maybe when casting they could add an update so that you can listen via earphones on your phone?
bluetooth headphone work great on the google tv
I love Stadia.
I've rarely used my PC here for ~10 month.
Being able to play the same game on the TV, in my home-office, in the office, in bed or on the toilet without any downloads is the best upgrade of my gaming experience, since switching from the SNES to the PlayStation 1.
But I would not recommend it for e-sports due to the latency some software is able to notice (wired is a must too!) ... :)
I’m still rocking the OG chrome cast
you are definitely due for an upgrade get the 4th gen with google tv its MUCH better
I really like the implementation of the USB hub but im struggling to find the same one seen in the video, what model is it?
Anker makes a good one.
Proud Stadia user here
Another one here. \o
Seems Linus hasn’t read the Jack Buser interview yet. Stadia is developing a bunch of in-house games and already planning all the way up to 2023...
@@Yogarine planning doesn’t change the fact that currently the service is a total flop.
If you add external storage, is it just as good?
That closing statement is part of why I’ve been moving from Google. They cancel everythinnnng
Something worth noting: My Chromecast Ultra I bought a couple of years ago has an Ethernet port (100mbps) built into the power adapter and fed through the same one microUSB port.
Can micro USB handle 100 mbps throughput tho?
What do you guys mean? Stadia is doing awesome! They game me the founders edition and $10 to spend on a game for free just for being a RUclips premium member.
Stadia is amazing, i am disappointed on LTT for reporting the false narrative and not breaking all the false stadia hate around the internet.
It almost seems like its their responsibility.
@@Galf506 sorry but popular opinion is not always the truth.
Hope your opinion is based on you trying the service and not just listening to someone and making one.
Sad if stadia didnt work for you. works for me and many many others.
LTT can't have tried Stadia, he is just doing what he thinks is the popular opinion, its getting pretty tiresome by now. Go try it, bash it after. For me it works flawlessly.
@@frati80 they did try it but it was long time ago.
When stadia had I think 25 games. Now we have 110+ games and service has improved for many, although i never had any issues.
But yes they need to give it a fair try and proper time to atleast show what it can do. I am baffled that people dont see the potential in this.
But then again people didnt see Chrome & android coming. Cant wait for people to slowly but surely fall in love with stadia.
Maybe it's doing awesome for you. But one year after it officially launched Stadia has obviously flopped. Hard.
The Onn TV box from Wallmart (also Google TV) works exactly the same, it is just as fast, the only difference is that it does not have Dolby Atmos but it is only $19.99. I have three in my house and I absolutely love them.
1: Google cancelling Stadia is very unlikely at this point
2: the latest ISP router provided by Telus, the Arcadyan, is pretty amazing. Very surprised by the performances.
Agreed, stadia is going nowhere as there is too much money in it. Plus they would have to refund people who have purchased games or keep the service running so they can play them
Well, Google closed down their Games and Entertainment studio this month so it’s not like we’ll see any advancements in Stadia.
Well this aged like sour milk. (Just announced it's closing in 2023 with refunds.)
🤣🤣🤣🤣
imagine advertising a wallet that's twice the price of the product you're reviewing xD
I might be wrong but I feel this belongs on short circuit... Nice vid anyways
In this video they actually took and tested devise before shooting a video. While on ShortCircuit they don't even know what they are filming until they open the box (which tbh is the entire point of that channel).
Got this one two days ago for a birthday present. My android-tv is from 2015 so Android version 8 was the last supported. This now allows me to upgrade the preformance and get the latest apps without throwing away a otherwise perfectly good TV.
You failed to mention that shield tv is really good at emulation as well.
He didn’t cover emulation on the chrome cast either.
Pretty sure for Plex users the Shield TV Pro is still the way to go for passing through lossless HD audio tracks from blu-ray rips as well
He should do tests with the Dolphin Emulator and the Switch one if that works...
ahh yes, I remember that iconic moment when Thanos said "it's basically inevitable" and then snapped his fingers.
I remember Thor hitting Thanos with his ISP to his head, and Thanos replies, "No one uses ISP anymore" then he snapped his fingers. Man, Thor got some pure depression after
Lol I wish it was 50 bucks for us in the EU. It's around 100€ here and availability is almost non existent
good so. dont support google with data or worse, even money!
maybe bye the mi stick which i bought recently... Its about the same with a little weaker performance for just 30 euros
@@harrison00xXx That does sound a little hypocritical considering the fact you're using youtube. I am also against the super data gathering google does but sadly there is no realistic way for me and most people around it.
@@AerialExploration I'm considering to just get the old chromecast, my friend had it and it seems to be working just fine.
aerospaceTUdelft your 2nd sentence is the answer why im also using youtube...
Thanks guys @LTT this is a great video as it has reassured my purchase, about 6 months ago RUclips stopped working on my grandparents oldish TV... LG just simply stopped supporting their RUclips app on their OS (maybe just on ~10yo TVs) so another product as a service working it's magic.... anyway found this exact chrome cast with google TV... its way better then any LG janky OS I've ever ever used coz its simply the Gplay store & they haven't had any connection issues so far. It really was a setup with a smartphone (GoogleAccount) & go... I still think power through HDMI is MAGIC. 1button.. bang.. TV on Chrome cast on... I'm gonna try afew things you guys mentioned like adding a USB-C dongle & I'm glad your getting the word out coz even Australian ISP have horrible Modems... like just TRASH so... it's a global issue YAY! Thanks again always a FUN watch!
unfortunately in Brazil, this device costs twice as much as competitors such as Xiaomi
Legends say linus still hasnt finished his "WHAAAAAAAAA-" from the intro
Just came here to say RIP Google Stadia. Linus was right.
I just bought this.
I could not get Dolby Atmos on streaming services running on apps on the TV because my TV and AV receiver are old (neither has eARC), but my receiver can do Dolby Atmos over Blu-Ray disks plugged directly into the receiver.
I bought one of these and plugged it directly into the receiver, and now I can get Dolby Atmos in Netflix and HBO Max as long as those apps are run from this device.
The Amazon Firestick does support casting, use it for that all the time.
8:11 prophetic, that's exactly what they did
Google is cancelling Stadia... So I guess it didn't matter in the end.
Wait so I could install Retroarch on this thing?
I’ve had a pretty good experience with my Xiaomi Mi Box S
Me too, this is better though
Me too
This is literally a mi box s with less features
any problems with the casting feature after the version 9 upgrade though?
@@gerryt1926 No but why bother casting when it supports most apps natively

I got it for 5€
+15€ vat... sad noises
still worth it though
i love my steam link and raspberry pi 4 that i use with steam link as well
Hi Linus, thanks for this went out and got Google TV
I tried my hub with USBC power del.
But when using the supplied power adapter, said it didn't have enough power.
Then tried charger with 60w max with 3A output, that seemed to affect my GTv, and not boot.
Then added norm power supply without hub and worked.
Which hub do you recommend?
What is max power wattage to it?
Thanks
got the hub working anker pd with 45W
That flat cable going straight out of the HDMI plug hurts me… How in 2020 can they still mess up cables this bad? Especially on a device that will probably always hang off the cable…
just tape it/ zip tie ir to the TV/wall mount rail or something, still a weird choice to go for a flat cable though...
because muh aesthetics or something lmao
@@mataskart9894 Yeah, most people won't do that and it could wear out or get ripped off while moving stuff. Anyway bad design… Kind of like Apple cables too sadly
@@DavidLeAsdf aesthetics of something you can't see .-----.
The flat cable isn't bad if you can plug it into an HDMI port on the back of the TV and not one on the side.... It's only when the HDMI port is on the side that the cable becomes a concern.
They killed Stadia lol. That ending aged well 😂😂
Sooo they did both, stadia support and stadia closing in the same month! Wooh!
I purchased one in June. Besides having delayed audio, they disable using your tv USB even when it has enough power. My other Chromecast works seamlessly. I returned this unit.
It's almost like raspberry pi doesn't exist for around the same price with more functionality. Although you have to install an OS yourself. It may end up being $75 after you get all of your stuff set up, but it is a better deal than most of these closed off boxes.
U got a link to do this?
mi box also exists for around the same price....but doesn't have the shortcomings that this does...
