ShutUpSmoshz Because we have over 100 games on it and the only games I have that aren't on Steam are Far Cry 3, Driver: San Fran (which doesn't work, ty uPlay) and Titanfall...
I love the idea of a donation button. However Valve would not get its cut.If Space Engineers allows people to charge for mods it will die before it gets its xbox one release. The people on xbox will be laughing at the PC version because of the 3 million paid dlc mods.
Timothy Newell I don't see how it wouldn't work. If the donation button is placed on the Workshop page by Valve when the author says they want to monetize the mod, then donations through that button go through Steam->Steam takes %->Rest held until total reaches their payout limit. Exactly like fixed payments work, but with the end user choosing how much to pay.
LuciferStarr But I now hear they don't want mod creators to have a Donate button anywhere else if monetized on Steam? "If you're getting ANY money through us, then we want 75% of ALL your monies" - What the actual...?
They should do it like this: If a mod reaches a certain number of downloads or is very popular, a big donate button appears, and people can give money to the developer of that mod so he can make more mods/improve the mod. Just like Twitch's subscriber system but just donates.
They could get that money by having a green light like charge before you can upload any mods. That way people won't earn loads of money for other peoples' content unless they are really serious, and they won't upload awful content unless they are idiots.
zeus1227 They seemed to be really quick at replying to my really small problems so I think they specifically pick small ones and it has always worked. I have never had a big problem, however, and thought 'I will use the steam customer service'.
ShopSongs Ehm, Valve is a private company. This lead to my theory that Zenimax/Bethesda (a company with shareholders) pressured Valve to make a paid mod marketplace. They saw that Skyrim, a game that came out in 2011 was still in the top 10 of most played PC games and wanted to cash in on that, and why do people still play this? Mods. Bethesda does get the biggest cut, and of course Valve wanted in on this. If Valve said no, Bethesda could have removed the marketplace entirely. Note, this is just my theory but it's the only thing that makes sense, Valve is doing great as a company, getting money from CSGO and DOTA 2 (marketplace) and getting a 30%!!! cut on EVERY game sold on Steam. I do not wish to spam, but I made a video going into further detail on my page, I also disabled ads not te be a dick.
*Meanwhile, in the console community.* "Mommy, what's that column of smoke and flame on the horizon?" _"That sweetheart, is one of the core pillars of PC gaming going down in flames."_
I never thought i'd say this. But if I ever can't just get a mod without the choice of donating and i'm forced to straight up pay for it... I'd probably pirate the mod and not donate a dime. Imagine piriting FUCKING MODS Edit: And I just hit the bit where Dan said people are going to start pirating mods. good to know he and I are on the same thought process on that lol
Dan what about Mods that are nearly required to make games work? Dark Souls's DSfix for example or maybe KOTOR or Total War (Or fucking anything from Bethesda or Obsidian)? Imagine having to pay for your full priced game and then having to pay more for the fan made "patch" that fixes it into a state of usability.
Vallorn You mean like people do already pay for games then subscription fee's to play it? Trouble is people ARE paying and as long as that keeps happening it will continue to be a thing.
Brendan Matthews Its been years since any game has had a successful subscription model. Some mmos still have it, but only because mmo's are super expensive to maintain.
***** Pretty much. I mean if you had the option to get paid to do something that you are already doing, wouldn't you go ahead and throw your hat in the ring? I suppose it is more based on honor or dignity but hell when there is money to be made...
If they start doing this for other games I can see this happening: Pay for mod. Mod works. Game gets updated. Mod does not work. Post ''politely'' for mod to get updated. Modder says the update made it so his mod is no longer possible so revert to an earlier version of the game. Steam auto updates games almost no matter what so you can't revert. Person who bought the mod is then screwed out of money.

I feel like the thought process at Valve is Person 1: 'Hey, I found another way to make money!' Person 2: 'Excellent, but what about the long term problems this might cause' Person 1: 'Long term... what's that?'
Not to mention that a majority of Skyrim mods require other mods/tools to even work, I won't say which one but one of the mods on Steam for money right now requires MCM which is a part of SkyUI which is NOT on Steam for money.
Holy shit, just so much wrong with this. A game update/patch breaks the mod you paid for. The mod creator can just say, "sorry, not my problem" then take that mod, fix it to work with the new version and then sell it as a "new" mod. Or... I was dissapointed with Valve, now I'm also angry at them. You see, this is what happens when you give the power to one company only! They do whatever they want! Jesus, this is not a good time to do this, people are pissed off with DLC milking, this is a horrible add onto this! This needs to be removed and planned out better!
I feel like Valve is too concerned about their reputation to release a game, and it's obviously just destroying their rep. as a result. They've said that they decided to restart work on HL3 several times because they felt like it wasn't good enough. They abandoned Alien Swarm (which I love but needs more content) for no good reason, other than I just wasn't really popular.
Kabsef They could still sell other people's games and work on their own games, in fact this could make even more money, because that's how business works.
1- the creator still can choose if his mod will be *free* 2- the creator can choose if his paid mod will have a fix value *or* will be "pay what you want" 3- you can *try* paid mods for free *before* buy it 4- you can buy *nothing* if you don't want something, wow!
Valve could do an internet show with indie devs, a bit like the apprentice where they have to do tasks each week, one gets kicked out each week, then the winner gets their idea made into a big budget video game. That or half life 3, but I think that former is more possible than the latter.
Well, this took me a long time understand. I read the title as stream starts selling mods. As in twitch stream starts selling moderator spots? I was so lost.
A problem with this is that once a game is updated and the mod isn't getting new updates you wasted money and if another version comes out you have to pay more money assuming that they released it paid
I use over 200 mods for Skyrim and use a lot of mods for other games too, while the vast majority of them are from the Nexus (and so I can still use them), if they get updated and the updated mods require a paid item from the workshop, I'm basically screwed.
Dan, if you make a game on steam, charge one, maybe two buck for it. you get a little money, valve gets their cut, then you can have a donate button in game to let those who want to pay more for the game. this way you also get the chance to make more money from people who previously paid for the game and decide that they want to support you even more.
I completely agree with the "Big ol' donation button" maybe even a "Pay what you want donation button" maybe even split it 50/50 and steam and the developers can split their 50% among themselves, "I have a dream..."
I run over 110 mods for Skyrim. If I were to have to pay 5$ for all these mods I'd need to take out a damn mortgage to do it. I completely agree with you on this Nerd.
Another big problem with this is overpowered cheaty mods that add some overpowered weapon or armour early on in the game will go from being "I can install this mod and win because I'm a casual!" to " I can BUY this mod and win because I'm a casual!"
Yeah, I agree with you. Maybe when you download it and it's finished downloading there'd be like, a "Donate here!" button or whatever. _Having_ to pay for _mods_ is idiotic imo.
***** FSX Mods are certified though right? As in, someone checks to make sure it all works. With this, someone could potentially upload a broken mod in "Early Access", grab cash from the few idiots that buy a mod, and make a run for it.
When i try to access any paid mod it shows: "This item is no longer for sale, but if you have purchased it, you will still have access to it." Any free mod works just fine.
Imagine Valve as a friend of yours, and then that friend makes a cool thing. You're like, "Cool! Can I see it? Try it out?" and Valve is like, "Sure! Give me a dollar."
12:30 I started doing something just before this, and I heard this as 'They should throw their money at little Indian people.' ... A slightly different meaning.
The problem about loving the idea with the donate button is that you can feel like you support the modders by supporting that idea, whilst still knowing deep down that hardly anyone would actually press that donate button, apart from maybe you, Dan, because I know that you really like to support things you like, and I feel the same. However, most people that use mods are not like that, and just thinks the donate button is a great idea because then they don't have to give the mod makers any of their money. Maybe having a trial period of like 1-2 weeks for the mod could work.
As for the whole "not doing anything with the money sort of thing" its confirmed that they have been working on HLE3 for a while now and are currently working on moving there games to the Source 2 engine so there's that.
The good thing here is. There are mods makers also up in arms about this refusing to put their mods on there and sell them. Some of the people who had paid mods even have undone it deciding against it. Overall Steam can't do this if the content creators stop, and a lot of the big ones have.
Are you still planning to do anything with the Doctor Who scripts you briefly mentioned writing a while back? You did say you had a season written. I'd be very interested in reading those.
Skyrims full game is £2.50 right now on steam thats less expensive than a lot of the mods -_-
Jordan Porter I can understand Midas Spells, that mods incredible, but stuff like swords and armor........
Wolfmanrocker midas spells are broken as he no longer supports it so id say skip it most fo the spells arent as good as the original oblivion mod.
Jordan Porter Lucky the nexus exists eh?
Sandwich247 yeah but I liked the workshop cos I just pressed a button and I have a mod with the nexus its all manual and what not
Jordan Porter theres the nexus mod manager which is quite easy to use.
Simple: Don't buy mods. They'll make them free again if no one buys them. Pretty simple. The problem is that the community is too lazy to boycott >.>
Dah Magpie Yes, this! Why can't we just stop using steam altogether?
ShutUpSmoshz Because we have over 100 games on it and the only games I have that aren't on Steam are Far Cry 3, Driver: San Fran (which doesn't work, ty uPlay) and Titanfall...
Dah Magpie Problem is this was the same solution to shovelware on Early Access. It didn't change.
Dah Magpie I think everyone will pirate mods anyways so It will die out quickly
It's not they're too lazy is the fact most people have more money than brains

Dan, I actually want to see this assassin's creed blindfold video now...
a donation button sounds like a much better idea
Wonder if Jimquisition is gonna do this.
I wanted your opinion on the subject and I got it! I need to use my mind powers more!
Q:What would you do with a billion dollars?
Dan: I would buy Ikea shit made from gold and another Lego city.
BRILLIANT.
So whilst watching your video, i open up steam and saw a BIG banner saying: "New ways to Support Workshop Creators"... Nice one steam :D
50 Shades of Team Fortress 2 - Femscout and Engineer edition
I HAVE THE SAME TABLE WHERE HIS LEGO IS STANDING ON !!!!!
that was the best ending yet.
kinda had to slow it down to understand though. XD
Are you still planning to do anything with the Doctor Who scripts you briefly mentioned writing a while back? You did say you had a season written. I'd be very interested in reading those.
