    A lot of the clothes that I've made in the past few years have been designed as retro or I would take big collars and put them on blouse with darts of current trend along with early 70's long sleeves that balloon out before the cuff. The fabric would be of a current print or in the case of one blouse, pin tucks, lace, ruffles sewn on, ebroidery and ribbon all in vertical set up. That one took me a long time to do but I had fun doing it. My friends call what I do Frankensteining. The compliments from random strangers is a nice ego boost.
    I recently designed and sewed up scrubs in a knit fabric with the tops having tulip sleeves, sides pockets, scalloped hem and bottoms in a straight leg form. It mimics cargo pants a bit but has scalloped edge pockets. When describing my vision, folks cringed and the drawings didn't seem to get my vision across until the prototype was made. My daughter wore it to work and since then, I've made about 100 of them for coleagues

      of hers. A bit retro in design but doing it in a knit fabric eliminates the horizontal pull lines in scrub tops.

    Thanks so much for this video. I'm doing a vintage inspired collection for school but I'm having a hard time with the fabrics. I'm only using remnants and it's kinda hard to know how much fabric I'll need before I design since I can't really order more and I'm limited to what happens to be available. Have you ever done a project using recycled fabrics? Any tips?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  4 года назад +7

      You have write a list of exactly how much of each fabric you have and have it handy as you design. I would explore how you can use multiple fabrics in one garment, cool fabric "collage" effects" so if you need to swap out one fabric, the overall look isn't sacrificed.

    Zoe its such great timing that you made this video! I'm working on a portfolio for admission for design school and its due by the end of the month! My inspiration is based off of African civilizations, including Egyptian of course. My question is when you mentioned that when u have a print you wanna add to your design based off of a detail or shapes in your image you like, how do you transfer that on to your fabric? For instance, deco shapes?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  4 года назад +1

      If you're trying to create the actual fabric, you have to work with a fabric printer. If you want to figure out how to design a print, you can watch my How to Design a Print video.

Comparisons never help anyone. Keep working, and work on cataloging your own progress. Check back to how you were doing last year, last month. Keep working.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  4 года назад +6

      As a teacher, I didn't really like talking about personal preferences very often because I didn't want students to try to design to my tastes and I think that's something that stuck to me. That's why I don't think I'll be doing runway review videos anymore. Balenciaga was and is hugely influential, he created some masterpieces and that's all I have to say about that.
