I must say, the part that really moved me - and there's quite a bit that moved me - the most in this video was at the end where you said, if you really love fashion and you want it to be a big part of your life; don't let little setbacks discourage you from continuing. Thanks, Zoe - that's exactly what I needed to hear. :)

Zoe gives as an example quitting Fashion for Law and here am I: just got a master degree in Law 17 days ago, spent one week depressed over wasted years and efforts + got drunk twice aaaaand since 10 days ago I am brimming with happiness since now I finally can solely do Fashion and (hopefully) never ever get to any legal practice.
My case: very good at studying + didn't have enough confidence in myself + parents and many other relatives strongly disapproved of fashion -> probably they are experienced/know better -> Law school -> HELL -> no one gives a sh** -> Learned the hard way to commit only to what I am willing to and to question others' advice when things don't concern them personally. And that's why you don't ask people/let anyone tell you what your career should be! Your choice because you'll be the one doing all the work in the end and you know yourself best! Can't choose? Maybe a gap year will give you the time to try out stuff and find something you like.

Hey, ur story was inspiring and relatable as I'm also pushing myself to pursue a law degree solely because I'm a social justice advocate and amazing public speaker. My other passions however lie in writing, fashion and film (in that order) I'm hoping to explore these passions with various creative ventures in university like short films, publishing projects and starting my own streetwear brand.
I know its been 3 years but where are u rn w ur life? i hope all is well and you're happy pursuing fashion in some form :) id love to get a response as we're really similar.

@@AZANlA Hi, it's nice to meet you :) I totally forgot my comment and didn't even know so many people have read it, I hope it helped at least one person to not go to the worst option out there - letting someone else make an important choice for you, when it will affect mostly your life. So... Three years later... With the help of a kind therapist (life had a few additional and much heavier slaps coming for my face back then) I made peace with this choice of mine and now I use my skills and diploma quite often. Since you are also studying law, I must add that in the long run it can give you strenght to pursue whatever you like, it helps to see the bigger picture of how things work in the current society :) it's not bad or good, just be sure to have a good reason to study it for yourself. Now I work with companies that produce different products, I make GDPR policies, write contracts, help with management. Still, since I am very stubborn, I keep gaining more skills and knowledge on composition, construction, company management and whatever fashion-related I can get my hands on, while searching for a good business model and type of company I'd like to make so that it wouldn't be solely for profit but with a greater purpose and good working environment. So now my struggle is with the ideals and perfectionism that drive me to make things much more complicated than they can be XD Sorry for the long answer, I did make an effort to keep it as short as possible considering all the things I needed to add in order to not be misleading in my answer.
You have very nice ideas, it's very refreshing to see a person with interests in so many and so different areas, they sound like together they can lead to a very good life story :) I'm cheering for you, try as many things as you can, discover your strenghts and what works for you and use the experience you'll gain to have a fulfilling life and always make place for what is important for you! Good luck!

@@ThePukanka hey :)) tysm for the last paragraph it made me tear up.
im so happy you found peace w ur skills and diploma that's great bc u cant change the past, so might as well use it to its max potential. simultaneously education has no age limit so you could get an additional degree that helps u transition to the fashion business!
i love that u still have the craving to craft :)
i suggest watching this fantastic video on the ikigai
      ruclips.net/video/G2SqqjRn_c0/видео.html
after watching that video and upon further thinking, i think a move into fashion/apparel law would be excellent for you and your tastes. i just googled it now and realised its a real thing :o plus since ur in the EU its bound to be even easier to get into since thats the hotbed for global fashion. 'zero to one' seems like a great book for you. also check out naval ravikant's podcast
the business thing sounds really exciting, theere are an infinite sources for help on that online, books and podcasts too. it sounds new and fresh i really hope u figure it out
nevertheless good luck on ur journey i wish u the best and all the nice things u said in that last paragraph

    Ma'am,
I was halfway to this video. I legit paused it to comment on what I felt at that very exact moment. I am in my first year of college. I always doubt my drawings, my sketches, my strokes, and my ability. This video made me question myself. That Mili, you really have a lot of potential right at this second. Imagine you working hard like Ms. Hong. Where can you see yourself in the next 10 years down the lane? To be honest, I have a really good grip with pencil colors. Watercolors are the medium where I toss my work into the trash bin. Your videos, your passion, and dedication, your hard work, and your persistence make students like me work even harder every day. I'd be forever grateful to you and your motivation in my life.
    Love and Gratitude,
    Mili.

I'm thirteen, five years before I turn eighteen. Five years before I inevitably go to college. The thing is, I'm scared to be the black sheep. I've been watching your videos for some time now, and it means so much to me because you fuel this passion in me to take the risk of loving fashion even when I'm surrounded by people who can't see the value of fashion designing. They're giving me some kind of deadline. Like if I'm not as good as you by eighteen, it's useless to take fashion. That's hell, right? You're really inspiring because here's how I see life now, there's no deadline if you're willing to learn and put an effort into it.

Thank you and please don't ever think that your videos aren't helping. So beautiful Zoe, I was a judge for that show! I Had a business. At the show, when I saw your work, my jaw dropped because in person it was so even more beautiful. It made me feel the art of fashion again, which loses focus in the race of the biz. It made me want to keep practicing. In school I was always just struggling to keep up. And I think you did so much more far and beyond. What a great teacher you are too. Hats off.

YOU ARE GREAT ,zoe!thanks really.....i am 14 yrs and i am dreaming to become a fashion designer....and was searching and surfing all along in order to get inspired ....well, actually i do get inspired and compile my ideas..I am illustrating from 7 th grade....and i suddenly lost my confidence in drawing ....(actually iam going to drawing class from the upper kindergarden..)i suddenly felt like i was loosing my path and asked my mom what she wanted me to become, hopefully she answered me "your life,i can only lead you to the road, you've to take the journey" after hearing this i really started to think mom didnt have confidence in me too....then i started falling back.....then i got a bit steady thought my ambition was to become like y drawing sensei and start up my own drawing school...THEN AT A POINT TIME ,I REALIZED I HAD INTEREST IN FASHION....THEN I STARTED TO collect ideas frm daily newspaper...magazine and lots of other sources.....then i put my ideas together....and get something that is messy ,yet a gud model....
After seeing your channel a 5 days ago i suppose i was literally falling for your works and how you make it so simple to understand.....thanks to you,

Drawing is definitely an art form that one can develop a lot. It takes simple, regular practice. Get a sketch pad and start in. When you get to the last page, compare to the 1st page - you WILL see an improvement! Get another sketch pad and keep going. Compare that last page to the 1st drawing you did in the 1st pad. Your mind will be blown. Make drawing a habit - like Zoe, you will develop skill and style. Good luck!

It would be amazing if you could do a video where you redraw some of your old works the way you would do them now so we can see how much you've improved (we already know but it's hard to imaging doing an even better job on those).

"...and then school was over, and I had to get a job." You sounded so guilty when you said that! I love seeing how your style evolved through the years. Something that you mentioned was that as time went on, your drawings started loosening up, which is something that I am trying to accomplish myself; maybe I just need to give it a little time and practice more...after all, #practicenotmagic. Thanks for sharing!

      >>as time went on, your drawings started loosening up
Yes, when I was first learning anatomy and how things should be drawn *exactly*, I was getting things "correct" but I lacked flow. I had to let go of some of my *exactness* to create drama and gesture, but not to let go too much to lose the design communication. And sometimes you have to get really super loose before you find a happy medium.

LOL. I ran into the comparison problem with my granddaughter. Like you, I started drawing when I was 5.
As an 11 year old, I created my own “watercolor” (I didn’t have any) using my mother’s lipstick and cologne. Without permission, of course. I got into a lot of trouble when I was young! All for the sake of art. 🤣 You are phenomenal, Zoe!

I just watched this again, you had me cracking up and started looking at what's left of my drawings...I love it. I jus wished my portfolio didn't get ruined by a flood...it had everything sketches from grade school, high school and art school. I would've been cracking up on my old sketches

I took an art class for the first time in college two years ago and I hated everything I did until I compared my final project to my first drawing. It was so drastically different

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 лет назад

Yes, designers and illustrators are usually visual people and we need clear visual reminders of our progress because we're so used to looking at our own stuff that sometimes we can't see a difference day to day. Always a good idea to hold on to some old projects.

Seeing your timeline makes me feel so much better lol !!! Thank you!!!! Although I have improved SO much over the last couple months thanks to your videos!!! I recently got a light box and that has made a night and day difference for my sketches, my eyes aren't straining to see my croquis it is amazing. All I had to do was leave a review for it and I got it for 9.00 and it was a 75.00 light box :) :) :) . Where do you find design competitions for people not in school? I have spent countless evenings and glasses of wine looking. I did enter a sewing one in Threads and honestly I believe I got screwed on that one I went above and beyond what they asked for :( but lol of course you think you are better than what was entered...but anyway...I have found a couple and they all want a ton of money and I am thinking they ain't right.
