Okay...Here's a precise breakdown with time stamps...
0:20 - Howard McGillin, who I believe holds the record for the longest tenure as The Phantom in ALW's 'The Phantom of the Opera'. He's done tons of musicals...original casts like 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood', revivals like 'Anything Goes' with Patti LuPone, as well as replacement casts for longer running shows like 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' and 'Phantom'.
0:26 - Chuck Cooper, Tony Award winner for the musical 'The Life'
0:55 - Wanting his check, is the legendary Joel Grey, The Emcee himself from the OBC of 'Cabaret' (Tony Winner), as well as the film version of 'Cabaret' (Oscar Winner). He's also the father of Jennifer Grey aka Baby in 'Dirty Dancing'.
1:36 - Andre DeShields, from 'Hadestown' (Tony Winner) as well as 'The Full Monty', and he created the title character in the OBC of 'The Wiz' back in the 70s. He is a true Broadway legend.
1:58 - Brian Stokes Mitchell...yeah, TONS of Broadway...Tony Winner for 'KIss Me, Kate', created the role of Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in 'Ragtime', and also was in the revival of 'Man of La Mancha' as Cervantes/Qujana/Don Quixote. Listen and react to "Wheels of a Dream" (with Audra McDonald) and "Let Them Hear You" from 'Ragtime', "The Impossible Dream" from 'Man od La Mancha', or "Were Thine That Special Face" from 'Kiss Me, Kate'...or any song he has sung. Incredible baritone voice!
3:46 - Phylisha Rashad, a Tony Winner for 'A Raisin in the Sun' revival that co-starred Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Audra McDonald, but most famous for playing Claire Huxtable on 'The Cosby Show' in the 1980s. She mainly does theater now. And she is the sister of actress/singer/dancer/choreographer Debbie Allen.
3:58 - Beth Malone, Tony Winner for playing graphic novelist Alison Bechdel in the musical of Bechdel's graphic novel 'Fun Home'. She is actually wearing her 'Fun Home' costume. She also was in the 'Angels in America' revival with Andrew Garfield (which earned Andrew his Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play).
4:01 - Bebe Neuwirth...LEGEND of stage and tv. Dr. Lilith Sternin-Crane from 'Cheers' and 'Frasier' which won her two Emmy Awards. Currently Avis DeVoto in the HBOMax series 'Julia' about Julia Child. But as a musical performer...the 'Sweet Charity' revival in the 1980s that was the last show directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse before he died, and she won a Tony for that. She played Lola in the revival of 'Damn Yankees' , won another Tony Award as Velma Kelly in the revival of 'Chicago'. And she has done so many other tv, movies and stage work.
5:08 - Chita Rivera, creator of the musical roles Anita in 'West Side Story', Velma Kelly in 'Chicago', Rose in 'Bye Bye Birdie', and Aurora, the Spider Woman in 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' in the original productions. She won Tonys for 'The Rink' and 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' A Latina legend of the theater.
5:35 - Bernadette Peters...'Into the Woods', yes...but she created the role of Dot in Stephen Sondheim's 'Sunday in the Park With George'. She is wearing a hat like the one Dot wears in the show, during "Sunday", which this "Sunday" pays homage to. You should see the OBC cast of 'Sunday in the Park With George' perform "Sunday"...it's a wonderful song as well.
5:58 - The Bums, paying the ultimate homage to Jonathan Larson...the Original Broadway Roger (Adam Pascal), Mimi (Daphne Rubin-Vega), and Angel (Wilson Jermaine Herredia) of Larson's 'RENT'! Wilson won a Tony for playing Angel. Adam and Daphne were both nominated, but didn't win. Adam and Wilson did the film version of 'RENT', and Daphne was in the film version of 'In The Heights'.
    Hope it helps!

Andrew said he had to stop in the middle of one take where is singing 'sit the fools' and he begged lin to change that Lyric because he couldn't call those people fools lmao and then he just couldn't say that word and Lin told him: "you workship these people but as jonathan they're just people in the dinner not your idols so just fucking say the word" and then he did the take and finished that scene lmao.
This song in this scene was the first time is was performed as a group because in tick tick boom, Jonathan played this alone with the piano and sang alone, so lin put this scene together with the cast of Jonathan's dream people in it as well as some people that had connections with Stephen sondheim, lin, Jonathan, etc.
And three of the original cast members of rent where there. They knew Jonathan but this was before they met him since they took place before he wrote rent. So it's nuts and emotional and crazy. Lin and Andrew cried like babies watching this in the final cut; their words not mine lol.

"How do I know her?" is Phylicia Rashad - aka Claire Huxtable. "Her too" was Bebe Neuwirth - aka Frasier Crane's wife Lilith - who played the Tony Award-winning roles of Nickie in the revival of Sweet Charity (1986) and Velma Kelly in the revival of Chicago (1996). The woman you freaked out about and said "Chicago?" is the great Chita Rivera who originated Anita in West Side Story and has 10 Tony nominations and three wins. The guy who wanted his check was Joel Grey - the original Emcee in Cabaret and original Wizard in Wicked - and Jennifer Grey's (Dirty Dancing) father. And I swear to god that Bernadette Peters must be a vampire because she has not aged a bit since the 1970s!!! She's stunning.

Fun BTS fact- Lin said that he did the “Lyrics by Jonathan Larson” on the building because was something that Jon never got to see for himself in life and wanted to give Jon the chorus of singers that he had probably always imagined when writing the song. 💗♥️💕 The people in it are all both people that inspired Jonathan or were inspired by him through his work.

I think this would work for theatre nerds and non-theatre nerds
For non-theatre nerds, it could just be Jonathan Larson fantasizing these random people in his musical to cope with the Sunday brunch rush.
For theatre nerds, this is Lin saying, “How do you do, fellow theatre nerds?” He put big theatre stars that some of us might recognize. He even put it Bernadette Peters, a veteran in Sondheim musicals, and three from the original cast of Rent. Put simply, this is Lin servicing theatre fans. There's an additional meta-level to this whole song, because this is actually not Jonathan Larson's number. This is Larson's "Weird Al Yankovic" funny version of Stephen Sonheim's "Sunday" from his musical Sunday in the Park with George, starring Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin. They actually watch this exact scene earlier in the movie on TV, when they discuss Bernadette's thin waist and men's inability to profess love to other people. Musically this number is literally the same, lyrically - like 75% the same, and even the "order, tension, balance" lines in the beginning - all from Sondheim's Sunday.
The real Larson was a protege of Sondheim way more than the movie shows, he started bombing the man's mail with his works even before he finished theatre school. So in Tick Tick Boom he sort of paid respects to Sondheim with this one, but he himself only sang it solo during the one-man-show era of this musical, while the original Sunday is a HUGE number that basically made everybody else go "huh, putting a number like that at the end of act 1 seems like a good idea, so that people wouldn't leave the building or something" (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, RENT, Hamilton, LITERALLY EVERYBODY past 1985 started doing it). So Lin decided to gather EVERY LEGEND he could muster, including both Larson's favorites and those who came after his passing, to create the most legendary performance of this song imaginable, and Bernadette was the one he called first.
I'll just leave this quote from Lin from an interview, I wrote it down, because it broke me: "[creating this number] I wanna reach the back row of the galaxy, wherever John may be and I want all of his heroes to be singing this damn song for him, in these epic, huge angelic choral harmonies, so that wherever he is, he can rest easy and he can hear it".

You are cracking me up because, although you keep saying you are just a vocal coach, you are often kinda teaching musical theatre performance at the same time. So. How. Can. You. Not. Know. ❤😂😊

I really enjoyed your review, hated the random interruptions for your own promotional things. I get it, just throw it at the beginning and/or end. ♥

I would have lost control of all bodily functions if I'd have been merely a PA on the set that day.
