He did actually play the piano and sing in the movie he took lessons for singing and playing piano for a year just so that he could do this role

@@straak he said in interviews that while he did sing this live he only learned enough piano to fool the audience. He learned certain parts by rote to appear fluent, but he can’t really play. The singing though!

This is exactly why I love Lin Manuel's directing. He emphasizes so much on the thematic structures of a story and in doing shows so much high level thought and emotion in his art. Definitely fitting that the last song in the movie is actions speak louder than words.
You might be thinking of the video of “Why” Netflix posted on RUclips which does have 35 ticks (and if that was on purpose, go Netflix) but in the movie, the ticking started 4 minutes before “Why” starts which you can imagine is way more than 35

And I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like the ticking speeds up slightly right before it cuts off. In my mind, that symbolizes a heart attack, or in Jonathan's case, an aortic dissection (which is often misdiagnosed for a heart attack)
Not only was this song recorded live, but it was the first scene Andrew filmed for the movie and it was filmed in only a couple takes!
Not the first scene he filmed but it was done at the end of the first week of filming. That was because Lin-Manuel could only secure the Delacorte Theater location in Central Park for that brief period in February 2020. As revealed in several interviews, they got their "Anne Hathaway" take with the 2nd one, though they did the scene several more times after that.

That exact thing happened to Andrew Garfield when he was younger. He was told he couldn’t sing so he gave up on it and didn’t try again until he got cast in this movie. And now here we are.
Then he was told he wasn't spiderman enough and then we got no way home. OK I think he finally ranks up there with Robin Williams level perfection
@@piscarius1 A lot of the bad reception from the Amazing Spider-Man movies was redirected at him. Really, the writing and studio interference was to blame (I stand by the first one though). Poor guy didn’t deserve it, I thought he was great. Imagine following Tobey Maguire.
Yes, it’s Garfield playing piano. He learned to both sing and play piano during the year prior to filming. Amazing talent. Love that he got the Oscar nom. Fingers crossed for the win.
The story is a semi-autobiographical musical. He wrote the original Tick, Tick, Boom as a monologue. It was re-worked after he died into a 3 person musical, the movie is based off of the 3 person musical. He wrote this after he started working on Rent. His best friend who was diagnosed with AIDS is still alive.
It was his brother, Michael, that was diagnosed with HIV positive. But Jonathan ended up dying of misdiagnosed Marfan's syndrome, and hi brother ends up outliving him.

She provided Lin with so much information about Jonathan's life, including videos of his apartment, which were used to make the set, and gave insight into his personality and relationships.
Lin’s shot in the dark with Andrew really paid off. So happy for him and his Oscar nomination, but I am salty they couldn’t even give Lin a nomination for directing.
And yes, it was Andrew playing. He took lessons.
Not a shot in the dark. Lin said many times that after seeing Angels in America that he knew that Andy was the perfect choice for the role
With the cut right at the end, I just had a final revelation gut punch that I didn't notice when I first watched the film. But the rain is such a double metaphor. It is a wonderful pathetic fallacy, but also, the sound it makes sounds somewhat like a thunderous applause, the one thing Larson never quite got, a full theatre of patrons applauding his work. God, the sound design, the cameos, and so much more, of this film is just a love letter to Musical Theatre.

Its also worth mentioning Andrew Garfield is british so he is putting on an accent all the way through his preformance! And he learned to sing in ONE year. This man is crazy talented.
I don't have confirmation, but I remember hearing somewhere that not only was this sung live, this was his second take, and it made it into the film.

It kills me every single time to think Larson passed away right before Rent opened. He never got to see his (arguably) best work shatter Broadway. He deserved to see how that story lived in our hearts
Yep this was definitely sung live. Andrew's talked about how it needed to sound like Jonathan was writing the song and coming up with the lyrics on the spot so it was really important to do this one live.
They took 3 takes all the way through, and used the 2nd one I believe.
That's the Delacourte theatre in Central Park, hence the random piano haha.
Andrew has talked about how he was also singing for his late mother in this movie, and you can really tell in this song :(

Lin spoke about Andrew and said that since he had no prior singing experience he came in with no bad habits. He was able to learn how to do everything exactly how he needed to.
I had a friend who worked on the film. This was the first thing Andrew filmed. He also sang and played it live, he learned how to play piano and sing for the movie. It’s amazing

This man. This whole man. He is the best. He is unbelievably underrated. I love him so much. He learnt how to play piano and sing in a year. And he sung this song while crying. When I watched this movie, I got chills from his singing. Honestly, I still do. I wish him the best in the future

As many people have already mentioned, this was indeed filmed live... at Andrew's request, BTW. They got it on the second take. I HIGHLY suggest, whether you do a react video or not, to watch some of the promo-interviews - especially the ones with multiple cast members. Never have I seen interviews where people start crying or nearly do on multiple occasions! Also, something I haven't seen anybody mention yet, here or with other reactors concerning his singing abilities: Yes, it's been mentioned that he studied and took lessons for a year. But he is also an accomplished stage actor, which demands that one be in control of their voice and how to use it. He actually did a play called Angels in America, which runs in excess of six hours - seven (?) times a week in the West End and on Broadway. That performance is what got Lin-Manuel's wheels turning, essentially thinking that "Andrew can do anything..." Even the cast is still reeling from this movie! (Also, as an aside, check out the audio to Therapy, which you already reacted to, on RUclips music. There's more to the song than what you heard. I just think you'll appreciate it). OK. I totally believe the general emotions you put into making art often transcends the screen. Given how emotionally invested everyone is in this movie no wonders viewers also feel the same!
From my knowledge Andrew Garfield spent a year of vocal lessons and learning how to play piano for this role. Lin-Manuel Miranda took a shot with Andrew fully aware that he hasn't had much of any musical background.
In a way it isn't necessarily the riskiest shot because the style of Larson isn't really the cleanest most refined music, but that's exactly what his revolutionizing element was in the theatre community making art based in his emotion and through his eyes. Even when he thinks he's being super theatrey with Superbia he brings himself to the table and make a statement instead of making the same old formula of other composers hard work putting their style to music with the "most perfect" sounds. The sheer fact that Andrew isn't necessarily "the best" singer is EXACTLY why he knocked the vocals AND acting in this role out of the park. I hope he does more musicals.

Funny you should say about people giving up because they're told they can't sing:
Andrew Garfield was told at Central School of Speech and Drama that singing wasn't for him. He didn't really give singing roles or musical theatre a thought from then and focused on plays.
The older lady walking (in the very first frame of this video) was LMM's music teacher in elementary school !
He deserves to win the Oscar!! Best performance overall that year!

I've tried to watch the film again, but I was devastated the first time and I didn't want to be in that stage again. But I really want to watch it again. I think I really got the message, that's why it touched me that much. I'd be so happy if the Academy recognizes him (Andrew Garfield) with this award, because I think with that, Jonathan himself would be prized, and our friend Lin Manuel Miranda, and all the dreamers in this world who fights to be part of something hard to fit in.
hi! I read a tweet from Lin Manuel telling the story of how he watched this scene with his son prior to the release of the movie and his son could feel the sadness of the actor and then told his dad , LMM, that the piano would make him better. Loved that story.

Actually I think Green Green Dress is in the movie it’s just the Joshua Henry version and I think it plays in the background of the make out scene at the beginning movie.

He is playing, moreover, he actually IS SINGING and PLAYING LIVE. Also, the footage of them as kids, is really Larson donated by his family and various organizations. Although Michael doesn't really exist, the semi-autobiographical musical Tick Tick BOOM had 3 characters, Johnathan, Michael, and Susan. Michael was based off of Larson's longtime friend Matt (who really was diagnosed with HIV, lived not only to see Tick Tick BOOM and RENT, but also is still alive) and Susan is based off of a dancer Larson dated for several years. (Larson's girlfriend did show up to watch the show that night).

This is not just Jonathan's grief about everything he sings, this is also Andrew's grief of his mother who had died prior to filming this masterpiece and this exact scene, so every tear, every crying sound, all of the sorrow is also about her

This is the best musical movie ever and I’ve seen them all. What I think is unique about this movie in particular is that it has its own emotion it’s not happy or sad it’s just Jonathan Larson like it just has its own feeling and I’ve never gotten that from any other musical and it’s just something that he thought he was running out of time and Michael was like no you’re fine I’m running out of time and yet here we are today and Jonathan Larson is dead and his best friend is still alive he’s a CEO of a big corporation now and it’s just so ironic. He never got to experience his success and we never got more from him. His lyrics and his story and his style are all just so brilliant. I have such an emotional tie to this musical, I cried for days after my first time watching it, mourning his loss.

Girl you were not the only one sobbing - I watched this on a whim and was hooked from the very first note. It connected with me in ways I am still discovering. Andrew Garfield should be in every musical especially after knowing he was Lin's first choice and threw himself into Jon's world so he could do it all justice. I need him and Raul Esparza to team up in a musical - Raul aka Barba on SVU and in so many incredible musical roles, played the first version (I believe) of Jonathan Larson in the Tick Tick Boom musical. Also, the man literally let himself be overtaken by the song Hallelujah, please look it up. It's like the song lived through him. the piano isnt random! that is the Public Theater in central park, which is a staple of pre- and off-broadway shows. i think hamilton started there, actually, so lin had some personal connection to that stage :')

Emotional tidbit: Andrew Garfield channeled his grief on the recent passing of his mother in his performance. Lynn Garfield died of pancreatic cancer in 2019, while Andrew was filming The Eyes of Tammy Faye and right before production on Tick Tick Boom. 😢

I've watched your reaction to this song at least 10 times now, and the emotions are the same every. single. time. Andrew just blew me away in this movie and this song in particular had me ugly, snotty crying into my pillow. And I will admit I am one of those that had given up on my singing, not necessarily because I thought I was bad, I'm not terrible, but more because I wasn't doing it because I wanted to, I was doing it because I was forced into doing it, but now... after watching Andrew and your videos I want to get back to it, but this time because I choose to.
