The woman in the blue scarf in the front row that they show, is Jonathan Larson’s sister, and she said that when she was on set watching Andrew she said that it felt like she was spending time with her brother again. As if I didn’t need to cry more about this movie.

@@rocknroll20024 The Larson family is VERY involved with Jonathan's legacy. Both Allan and Nan would go and speak to the different productions, even high schools, thanking them for keeping Jon's memory alive. After they passed it was Jon's sister, Julie who keeps the legacy going.
So technically, he died a few hours after the last dress rehearsal which was also the day of RENT's first off-broadway preview performance. The show was canceled for that night and the cast and crew instead did sing through in memorial. The most crushing part of the story is that he had been having chest pains for days prior and even sought medical attention, but he was misdiagnosed and never got a relatively simple surgery that in all likelihood would have saved his life.
This story is so heartbreaking

What bothers me is that every time he went to the hospital, the ER wrote off his chest pain as food poisoning and showed him the door. Why? He didn’t have insurance and it was obvious he wasn’t a big fish. He wasn’t going to make the hospital any money by treating him.
Perhaps this is a bit morbid, but there’s even a story about Jonathan’s last week or so in a medical journal: “The Journal of Urgent Care Medicine.” The article is called “The Story of Jonathan - One Week in January.” I think this made it into this particular journal because whoever wrote this article is trying to teach its readers how to diagnose someone like Jonathan. That no, you don’t write it off as food poisoning and shove the patient out the door.

It's funny because you say "Because this is Lin-Manuel" about that quiet part, but by associating that type of moment with Lin when Jonathan was the composer, you're actually noticing the influence Jonathan had on him as a creator!

Please react to “no more” and “why”! “Why” was recorded and filmed live, which just proves how much more amazing he was and it’s freaking amazing, it makes me cry. Jonathan Larson’s sister was on set that day watching also. “no more” is just amazing in its own way.

The "Why" performance also took place at the end of the first week of filming because they only had use of the Delacorte Theater location in Central Park for that short window of time. Just think about those circumstances for a moment and it becomes even more clear what a fantastic performance that was. The way Lin tells it in an interview, they got their "Hathaway take" on the second take of filming that scene.

Andrew Garfield deserves every award for this musical. Everyone who took one year of music lessons and have to impress Lin-Manuel fucking Miranda definitely deserves all the praise he gets.

I love that this song illustrates something Andrew Garfield has said in interviews before and after this film was released. We all have unfinished songs. That within us all, we only have a finite amount of time to sing our songs and try to get them out in the world. Dr. Wayne Dyer always said, "Don't let your music die inside of you." What unfinished songs did Jonathan Larson have? That's a big part of the tragedy. But the triumph is what songs he left for all of us as his legacy! Thank you, Jonathan Larson...and Happy Birthday (February 4, 1960 - January 25, 1996)...he would have been 62 today!

Not gonna lie it's my favourite bit of the song. But that's also because I am a massive fan of Bradley Whitford who the camera cuts to in the audience at that point).
What’s so great thematically about this and 30/90 is it brings Jonathan’s coming-of-age arc to a close. He starts the show dreading his birthday, and by the end embraces it.
So, interesting note, the segment of "what does it take, to wake up a generation" was originally written without that high note. So far Andrew is the only person I've heard sing this that's gone high with it

This movie and soundtrack is a perfect circle, if you remember in 30/90 he says "they are singing happy birthday" and in louder that words he end it with the happy birthday song
I'm not that big of a musical fan but I 100% love this film mainly because of how Andrew Garfield can sing and the musicin general. The dude sings as if he's been singing for a long time. His performance is amazing 10/10 performance
The first time I watched this movie I cried my eyes out. Jon Larson gave the world a gift beyond measure with Rent; it’s more than likely that Rent and it’s message saved many LGBT+ lives and gave them hope. I was honestly so heartbroken when I thought about what else he might have given us if he’d had more time. Rent changed my life at 19 years old, and tick tick BOOM did it again at 27. Happy Birthday, Jon; thank you for what you’ve given us. I wish we could have given you more when you were with us.

Yup same for me. It's so much better because it's kind of unexpected. We get that final dialogue about what Johnathan did and his impact, and then the narrator (was it Alexandra?) stating he still had "more" to do... all over that piano intro.
Those few notes building up, unexpectedly, to something brilliant.

@@JSKatsky No worries at all. I kind of avoided musicals for theeeee longest time. I "knew" about the obvious ones, but the first one I really dove into was Hamilton.
Became obsessed for a time lol. Then I saw the praise for this film and decided to put it on one night when I was going to bed. Bad idea... finished it and researched more for hours.
Still haven't seen Rent or really anything else like that, but I'm more than open to suggestions. Guess I was a closet musical fan all along...
Just a little fun fact, Andrew Garfield actually didn’t know how to sing before this role, so he learned how to sing for this role which is amazing ❤️
Lin manuel loved this about him, and said it was to Andrew’s advantage because he had “nothing to unlearn” and “no bad habits” : )

And we should thank the masseuse who said that Andrew “can sing” 😄 when Lin Manuel asked if he knew if Andrew can sing. So he “lied” at first that he can but took some training and gave this amazing performance
This is my FAVORITE song from this movie. And it became my favorite song in general. It makes me tear up, and its my favorite song to sing. The line “cages or wings..which do you prefer? Ask the birds” gives me chills. I want to make a tattoo inspired by this song for myself. It changed my life
The entire song makes tears come to my eyes, but my favorite line that always makes me start crying is “if we’re so free, tell me why so many people bleed?”

I think it helped that he hadnt sung before and he was just like a fresh ball of clay for the vocal coach to mold whereas singers are harder to break of bad habits and teach new ones because they are so stuck in their ways (like old clay) . I also think that being half British/half American and great with accents helps because he has that ability to change things up and flow between sounds.
So, I'm SURE that someone else has said this, but the reason Garfield hasn't been in a musical before is because he literally learned to sing for this film.
Way I hear it, he was told early on that he can't sing, and had kind of avoided it for most of his life up to this point.
Yess he had said he tried singing but he felt suck so he just continued do an acting theater😩
It might be apocryphal, but I heard something about how he took singing lessons at a young age and the teacher quite rudely told him he couldn’t sing. It humiliated and terrified him, so he never took singing roles until Lin-Manuel Miranda convinced him to give it a go and helped him find his voice.

It was drama school. The teacher/professor assigned him a difficult song and then gave him a failing grade instead of encouraging him. So he just believed he can’t sing.
LMM on the other hand thought he could do it. As long as he isn’t tone deaf as he did handle a 7 hour play and didn’t lose his voice.
I wonder how LMM managed to see that he has the potential.
I really love Andrew Garfield as an actor, but I love him even more as a singer. This just shows that so many people have talents that we may not know of. I think it’ll be important to keep our eyes open and listen to everyone around us. Because they, too, could go from unheard to your favorite artist/singer. I find it fascinating and eye opening. 💕
Hi Audrey! Just wanna share that around 4:28 of this video, you'll see that the woman in the video is Julie Larson, Jonathan's sister and last surviving member of his immediate family. I always start to tear up whenever I see her in the film.
The end always gives me chills. Since the musical starts with Jonathan refusing to turn 30, denying it, questioning his life decisions, him playing “Happy Birthday” at the end shows his acceptance of getting older, albeit after he feels like he has accomplished something with a successful workshop for “Superbia”. After making a name for himself, having a, in his eyes, major accomplishment (not to say it wasn’t major, just that there were likely other accomplishments that he himself undermined and didn’t give due credit), does he feel like he can turn 30. That was his whole point prefacing “30/90”, that his parents did so much by the time they were 30, that he felt that he comparatively had done nothing with his life.
I liked what you said about Andrew not being pigeonholed into being Spider-man anymore. I saw him in 2012 thinking that he was not a recognized actor, and now that he has made a place for himself in the industry, seeing him play Spider-man again in the 2021 movie makes me feel that I can value him properly. He definitely doesn't need the character to be a great actor and a great person
Yes that was Idina Menzel. She was the original Maureen on Broadway. It’s where she got her start. Rent is where a lot of now Stars, got there start. It is horrible that Jonathan died the day before opening. It’s heartbreaking.
You should definitely do “Why” next. Andrew sang and played it live and in two takes(which wasn’t allowed on set cause of Covid) and he absolutely killed it! Definitely one of my top songs from the movie
I love your journey trough tick tick boom, is one of my favorites musicals and now movies! This is probably my favorite song, the line "why does it take a catastrophe to start a revolution" always gets me and makes me tear up.

Larson had so many perfect songs. Not only did he make absolutely flawless melodies, but his lyrics were so deep and meaningful. I love listening to his songs over again and focusing on the lyrics and the message. Absolute perfection.

You need to watch "No Day But Today". It's the story of Johnny Larson, and on the RENT DVD special features. It has a little of Suburbia and Tick, Tick, Boom, and of course a lot of RENT info.
I don't mean to react to it necessarily, but it gives a lot of context and shows why John was so important to musical theater even though he never saw one of his shows on Broadway.

Something people don't talk about enough is that Andrew does have an amazing singing voice and it's insane he's this good after 1year of vocal training but he's also doing this in an accent that isn't the one he usually uses witch is insanely impressive he's incredible 😊

I’m so glad this movie is bringing these incredible songs to light. Back when I was a kid I used to be a performer and this was a song that me and my singing teacher would often sing as a duet during shows, one of my all time favourite songs and now to see it getting mainstream attention is just so great to see!!

I know this is a vocal reaction video and meant to analyze the singing and what not but sooooooo much credit for this movie being amazing really goes back to Jonathon Larson being an absolute revolutionary artist. When i think about his story I always end up coming back to the "taken from the world too soon" can you imagine the things he would have done with time and experience. It's heartbreaking but i cherish the works of art he left us with.
This was his first Musical. He took a year to learn how to sing so he was an open book when training for this film!

Yeah, the opening night of Rent was just a thing of beauty. The cast opted to do a sing through to aid in the grieving process rather than cancel the show. I've watched the video from that night and...just chills

Quick correction, Lin Manuel didn’t write the music, these songs were made by Johnatan when he was writing tick tick boom and though it never hit Broadway the production has actually been done by different theatres. The way they put it together here was to use those songs to tell Johnathans story while also celebrating his music. Lin Manuel directed the movie and coached all of the singers vocally but he himself never actually wrote it.
I can never sit through the soundtrack or the movie straight! I always end up crying! Loved the reaction!

I know nothing about singing, so after having listened to the OBC of Tick Tick Boom and getting used to Raul Esparza's gritty vocals, I was expecting Andrew's to not be as strong but HOLY SH--

I love your videos, I've been watching them for awhile. I love how you break everything down. I meant to write this when you did the first video.... anyways, the reason you don't see Andrew in any other musicals, is, he learned how to sing and dance JUST for this role. The story of how Lin ended up casting him is kind of hilarious (you should look up them talking about it during the promotion of the film), Lin was told that Andrew was a great singer and could dance... Andrew couldn't. So, when Andrew said yes, he kind of hung up the phone and said, oh ****, I've got to find a vocal coach and dance teacher NOW. He learned it all in a little over a year. Zero knowledge to Tick Tick BOOM in one year.
You should also absolutely look up the guest appearances in the film for the song Sunday. Everyone in the diner was an icon in Broadway. If you look at the credits of the film, they even list them all under the title of Sunday Legends.
Also, Lin didn't write any of this music, this is ALL the music Johnathan wrote for his Musical Tick Tick BOOM, the precursor to RENT.

Actually he’s a trained gymnast so flexibility, choreography and movement wasn’t an issue. He was Spiderman- there are some behind the scene videos that shows shows him doing his own stunts and choreographed fight scenes.

He was actually rushing because he wanted to be just like Sondheim and have released his first musical before turning 30. But it is DEVASTATING he never got to see the success of rent. It is my top favorite Broadway musical. La vie Boheme will forever be my #1 favorite song.

Every song in the movie is a Jonathon Larson song. Supposedly, Lin Manual Miranda wanted all the music to come from Larson as a way to really showcase the man’s talent, and make this movie just as much a love letter to him as it is to his work and Rent and musical theater as a whole.

Andrew Garfield spent a year learning to sing for this movie. Not only did he have to learn to sing, he had to learn like Jonathan Larson specifically.
I've noticed there's a video of 30/90 sung by Larsen up on youtube and it's fascinating how well Andrew portrayed him. It might be interesting to see a reaction to the songs performed by Larson or maybe one of the compilations of others who have done songs from this musical.
Don't know of I got wrong what you said, but just for the record, all lyrics and songs are original Jonathan's songs. Lin did that slow down thing but only from directorial aspect this time 😉
Either way , I strongly believe that Andrew and Lin deserve all the awards of the world for the detail and respect to that man's work!

In terms of favorite song, Louder than Words & Come To Your Senses are tied for me. I found out something - in real life, Jonathan & the woman Susan is based were actually together at the time of his death. Apparently the relationship was very on again, off again; they simplified things for the film.
From what I've read someone (possibly a teacher) told Andrew he wasn't a good singer, so he just didn't before now.

Garfield wasn't a singer before Tick Tick Boom... He clearly had pipes ready to be shown, but went and did voice and singing coaching for the role... Lin Manuel-Miranda said he hadn't picked up any bad habits so he was the perfect voice to train.

It feels to me that he worked on these simultaneously. There's a references to being in a group of Madrigals in this movie. And "Surface Pressure" has it's own tick tick boom reference.
