I was asking why is quality of video so poor on both cameras.
In the end of the video I realised I was watching in 360p
The a6400 with color grading just, just blew my mind off, the results Sony can achieve with such a tiny camera is just out of this world.
I’m clearly clueless. Thought the one on the left was preferable. Great video.
same :P
100%. In this youtube video (with all the caveats that entails) the sharpness and the color is much better with the a6400 video. Not sure why he didn't do more subjective color correction to remove the unnatural green haze on the Red image. Softness and unnatural color is certainly a common choice for movie production but not good for youtube comparison showing real world images that we expect to look real and be sharp.
@@curtisbme exactly. i remember when i watched this video a year ago i also prefered the a6400. when you get more into cameras you begin to like unnatural color, because there's more "details" in the highlight and shadows. most people would prefer the a6400 in this video. but camera geeks would prefer the RED camera.
Because of the overall clarity. The Red is smoother and not quite as 'bright', but far more accurate colors and lighting.
Same lol
Solid comparison as always bro! For me, with all these awesome cameras, I've found that I need to work on my story telling more than anything. The camera is becoming inconsequential for basic online content, but when you're spending a ton of cash on a shot or explosions, being able to push color or half a stop of DR makes sense in the pro world.
Whenever a new camera comes out I'm always waiting for gene's comparison with the red. He's 100% going to make one with the blackmagic pocket cinema camera 6k😂
Absolutely!
@@PotatoJet I'm really waiting to see that. It's definitely going to be gory...
I guessed )
Potato Jet
Do you happen to be giving away a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k any time soon? Hmmm...?
@@PotatoJet Hi, I got a 6400. How can I build the Cinema JETPACK LUT? Can you give me the entire setting? Thanks
It's easy to know which one is the RED because it always has that greenish look to it
Simarjit Singh that green looks nasty
Could always change the tint to the other side a bit
Particularly in skin tones, where you really, really don't want a greenish tint!
the skins doesn't looks green, it looks more natural, plus RED's footage are meant to be color graded,
Yeah honestly i don't like that green tint
Always look forward to your gear comparison videos. You make them so enjoyable to watch.
Man i'm watching you since you had like less than a 1000 subscribers and i always knew you'll grow really fast on this platform. Look at you now at 381K subscribers, really impressive!
honestly i liked the a6400 in some situation more than the red. its a bad feeling but its true xD
just Tom you're not alone
So did I and I was directing a pro shoot today with a red!
Me too! Wild!
That's because you see a lot of screens everyday around you and in a way it forms your taste, because due to lower power consumption human brain likes what it's already familiar with. Since 6400 picture is basically a cellphone picture, it will appeal to wide audience nowadays. Nothing wrong with it. Blackmagic also went this road in Pocket 4K, it's more like GH5 now picture-wise, rather than movie-like like original Pocket Camera or Production camera from Blackmagic. I for one love Fujifilm X-T30 with old Soviet lenses because it's an anti-cellphone picture Color-wise, but my taste in matter is in minority crowd for sure.
@@vladimirtomin8223 bruh "cellphone picture"... What are you on about😂
Both are cameras are very iconic, and while one may seem to have the upper hand, they both preformed to such an outstanding degree in regards to quality, and features. Great Video!😀
Just bought a6400 LUT. I was waiting for this. Can't wait to use it.
I've been tweaking my own LUTs for the Sony mirrorless cameras over the last two years, only to have them change the colour on me lol. I can't say I've been inclined to check out anyone else's Sony LUTs until you put these out. Good work! It was very cool seeing an episode of you here with your partner in crime visiting Matti. Your collaborations with him are something I always look forward to. Nice people coming together to do what they enjoy makes for fun watching!
Left Sony, Right RED.
The colors had it fairly obvious (green-ish) at first, but the lighting really made it clear
yep
Instant purchase! Thanks 4 LUT pack! Thumb UP :)
Yes. I’m buying your LUTS! 😳🙌🏽 the footage you took looks like a movie I’d watch over and over
Been coming across your videos lately, and you've definitely earned a new subscriber. Thanks for the content!
Hey potato! I actually learned from your comparison videos about the green tint of cinema cameras. I tried pushing some greens into the shadows of my sony camera and it worked pretty nicely! Thanks for the content as always!
How did you do this?
No lie, I've had the a6400 for almost a month and I am beyond impressed with the quality! This thing is absolutely PERFECT for RUclipsrs. Only downside in my opinion is the weak battery life. But with the ability to use the camera while plugged in and with some extra batteries, not even noticeable. Also the lack of IBIS is not even as big a deal as most people are making it out to be. LOVE this camera. Nice video!
Just bought the LUTs. Can't wait to upload them. Thanks. I shoot outdoors at a pistol range and often run into a lot of sunny shots and this should help fix it for me. Thanks! Also subbed too!
As with every project, it's the right tool for the job. Great stuff, as always, Gene! Keep. It. Up.
I could identify the camera instantly on the first shot, however, after luts applied and color corrected I can say that the difference is not a lot under my perspective. You do have to take care about the shots, I don't know a lot about the technical differences between the two but OOTB the sony seems more red and has a synthetic sharpening. The good thing is that this differences can be corrected in post, create a preset and your are mostly done. Thank you for your review, not very informative but you can make your own judgement on the looks.
you mean, the difference is not a LUT under your perspective.....haha...ha.....
you could even just lower the sharpening in the profile to get rid of that synthetic sharpening
99% of people won’t notice a difference so why spend thousands more? I’m sure there must be some reasons.
@@waynelast1685 well..standards, details, file formats, reliability ecc...by the way i bought a sony a6400 recently with a sigma 30mm f 1.4 lens. I LOVE IT.
@@waynelast1685 People making videos notice it. If you are a film maker, then you won't be able to produce something that looks digitally enhanced, and synthetic. Movie audiences are really so stupid, they don't deserve the level of detail and the cinematic beauty of movies. Thank god that we still have beautiful art. Never ask "why" something should be beautiful. Never take beautiful art for granted. Consider ourselves lucky that beautiful art still exists.
your color grading always givesaway which one is red
always more greenish than other camera
Hmm I would say it always has a yellowish tint too
so true!
I agree haha
Yeah, it always makes me feel like I have cataracts and I hate it.
I can always tell Red and ARRI from the softer image. The smaller cameras definately do more sharpening
I like how you did this, a real Jedi mind trick. I watched the video for the comparison and left wanting to buy your LUT pack. Bravo my friend...Bravo.
thanks much for the review potato jet. I'm actually getting one tomorrow (08.10.2019). it really help me a lot to decide of getting the sony a6400
Toyota Vs Ferrari
Toyota supra*
@@Sheeshh777 yes 😳😳😳😳
You gotta do the xt-30 vs the a6400 they seem like such perfect competitors
Thanks for labeling left and right. Probably would have thought the left side was right and vice verse without that. Lifesaver!
Good stuff. Thank you Potato Jet!
Great video! Do you have this Luts for the Sony A7 iii? If so would it work for Final Cut Pro X ? Really like your videos bringing friendship atmosphere !
You should do a RED camera shootout/comparisons 👀 also what are your thoughts on the BMPCC6K announcement??
You finally got me to buy a LUT pack. Keep making great content.
Your luts are nuts !!
Black magic pocket cinema camera 6K is relesed with super 35
RIP to all other indie video cameras
Nah I think many indie films will still go for UMP 4.6k. Better dynamic range and better support for larger crews
Every time Panasonic release something blackmagic make it obsolete (hello gh5s). Nobody will buy their overpriced ff cameras now. They should've gone the apsc route like bm.
they're making everyone else look silly at the moment
Just need about 100 gigs for like 5 minutes of footage.
looking after the using lust its quite close.... may be after that you said which is red or Sony than i might have selected Sony for red..for the price of screen.
This was a great video again. Thanks Gene!
WOW! With your custom profile and grade it looks amazingly close to the RED!
Could you make a review-fieldtest of the video-dslr Nikon D7000 ?
Wait I definately got this one...
LEFT: -Red Cinema- *A6400*
RIGHT: -A6400- *Red Cinema*
man sonys with HLG look really good! great video!
Great comparison video! Appreciate the info on the differences between HLG/SLOG. I use cine4 and haven't had any issues with autofocus. I'll shoot HLG3 if I want to try something a lil different because of the colors. 😁
why there's no link on the red camera?!
These “Which camera is which” opening poles aren’t fun for me anymore... Mr. Jet has taught me enough that i always get it right.
Also, blah blah blah, green tint.... no ones mentioning highlight roll off. That was the give away right away for me.
Your so good to to watch ......Your informative with a great sense of humor Jean ...............
Woow very great video thnx bro! you really nailed it with the LUT 👏👏👏👌
and we never saw the luts again
The a6400 has this magenta love thing going, so your LUT turns reds into orange to make skin tones more natural. (See neon sign at 8:09)
You are right
Very useful video -- subscribed and will be buying your luts !
I've been waiting for those luts. You reviewed the a6400 like a day or two after I got mine
You have this unusual cadence when you speak, that is kinda, mesmerizing. I can see you taking over those David Attenborough nature docs! Great videos Gene.
Oh no, a man fan
No he sounds like an pretentious douch but I really like his videos he makes it work.
I have question, is LUT has to be specific to camera and color profile ???
Yes. Because because different camera have different Bayer Filter(leads to different colour science) and different camera brands have different colour or picture profile and hence good LUTS have to be made specifically for a very niche settings.
Ryan Thor Thanks Ryan for clarification.
Good comparison and demo 👍
I love your laid back and jovial style.
“Hey mom, just so you know I’m bringing my $25,000 camera to the cookout. Yeah, it’s for another RUclips video. Love you too mom, see you soon, bye.”
I actually prefer sony a6400 after grading with ur luts💖💖💖
You're so funny and informative. Best ever lol. buying your LUTs, im convinced.
Thx for the luts, bought it)
And the lenses? Did you use the (lousy) a6400 kit lens for this kind of test??
That’s what it seems like in the first test with no picture profile. He should’ve at least used that Tamaron for all of it
If he use kit lens, its why he got those autofocus issue when using slog2. The 1650 kit lens has slow autofocus motor because it is just a cheap kitlens. Tonnes of other youtubers use slog2 since 2016 and theres no mention of autofocus issue.
a6400 SOOC footage looks so much better than the RED. The magenta tint can be dialed down in camera.
your luts are amazing.. gene san
Gene, you have made a few videos talking about colour profiles and LUT's etc. A video about the best profiles for Sony, Panasonic and Canon would be amazing and I am sure your LUT's will further help can the most out of the footage!
You already making too much RED comparison videos, that i already know the colors of RED cameras.
I might not be first, but I'm here regardless 😁👍!
cant wait to pick up my 6400. im definetly using your LUTs
Just did a collab with another RUclipsr with this camera and the Tamron 17-28mm. Wow that AF tracking is just amazing!
I am a simple man, I see VS Potato video and I click.
Kidding aside, I think Potato should also focus on more affordable cameras and go back to compare them, I use m50 for my channel and it does wonders if you know all the tricks that I mostly learned here. Thanks!
Which color profile u use?
Agreed
@@eskolatv-pe2kv I use custom cinestyle and then colour correction in Pr
1. You should use the same lens on both.
2. Use PP6(or S-log) and correc it to green RED cololor profile.
Yes! Especially the LENS! DOF has a big impact on image perception, lens color rendition based on coatings and quality of optical elements probably has an even bigger impact!
Nice video man, the footage on these sonys is really impressive regardless of the butter smooth RED. I'm using cine4 on the a6500, was hlg the new one released for the a6400? I wonder if there is much difference.
great video! Looking UP for the next one :)
Why not try the GH5 in its full max settings? C4K 10bit 422 Prores HQ
I tried to color graded with my GH5 footage and It looked pretty close to RED camera.
What you get as advantage with profiles and bit rate, bit depth, you lose on auto focus that can't be used reliably for continues video work and you have much worse low light performance. So its a trade of. If you can control the light and have focus puller, GH5 makes more sense. For youtube run and gun stuff, or simple vlogging a6400 makes perfect sense.
Krunoslav Stifter I never use auto focus while filming. Gh5 low light performance is a bit off but still work for me.
@@hoangvunguyen9311 Sure. In your original post you mentioned GH5 not GH5s, so yes that would be close in low light performance to large sensor camera like APS-C. As for autofocus, yeah if you don't need it that is great. If you are solo operator and doing gimble work, auto focus is indispensable for vlogging or run and gun work where you want shallow depth of field. There is a tool for each job. and today we have more choices than ever and new ones are on the way, so we can't complain much. :)
Cheers!
@@KrunoslavStifter the gh5 also has the amazing ibis which would be key for vlogging for me... the gh5 autofocus actually got much better with latest updates, works fine now not as good as a6400 ofc but still fine. And yeah lowlight isn't good, but there are low aperture lenses or the speedboosters of af doesn't matter, the a6400 also doesn't have great low light
Maybe i could tell a difference if you didn’t make a cut to an other scene every millisecond 😛
That did make it pretty difficult. I do the same thing in my edits anytime I have a GoPro shot. lol
lmao I could tell the different in less than a third of a second on the first example.
Yeah it was hard but you can generally tell a film camera from a pro-sumer camera because the film cameras seem to have less contrast or something which gives you room to color grade later
I haven’t even watched the video yet and I’m already going to say great video. Can’t wait.
Great video! Just subscribed!!
You can always spot this greenish color of red.
It's not that the RED is green, the Sony just isn't properly capturing and rendering green in the image, making it too magenta or too blue in certain shots.
@@TechnoBabble In every comparison red had greenish tint. It's not just sony comparison.
@@jozosaravanja1626 Go look at it compared to Arri, RED more yellow and Arri is more red. When you compare cinema cameras to consumer cameras it's almost always the green that gives it away.
Random comment: what do you think of the film "Free Solo"?
Great doc I loved it saw it in IMAX
man , learning alot from you , thanks
Dynamic range and highlight roloff is a super quick giveaway always in these comparisons, then color differentiation, but overall the differences are subtle.
I’m still trynna figure out how Potato Jet got that girl 😅
Get a sense of humour and a career and it'll do the trick

Great plugg for your LUT pack! 👌🙏
Everything looks good on a phone
How about 50" tv
"THORONO...."
Was my pronounciation correct?
Great content,
Love this potato
Thanks for the video!!
- What was the 'detail' setting on 6400? (-7?)
- how do you sharpen footages?
So, basically, if I take my Sony, defocus it a bit, then slide the whole color pallette to toward green and desaturate it some, I don't need to buy a Red? Good to know.
Kind of. The dynamic range is the main differences. Other than that, we can adjust the a6400 and make it as close as it can to RED.
@@hanscfs That comment was (MOSTLY) tongue-in-cheek. ;-)
is it just me or is the 6400 way more clear too ?
I think the sony looked better
jes 👌🏽👌🏽
me too!!
same!!
100% thought the left was the red camera it looked 10/10
it's because the red was badly color graded
Crazy how close the comparison is getting between these consumer friendly cameras and big cinema cameras.
Really thinking about buying the a6400 as my starter thanks 🙏🏾

Potatoe Jet: RED VS *insert popular camera here*
The red footage now looks more like arri when compared to the sony
That was so easy. The one one the right just has that movie feel to it for some reason. While the Sony seemed to have a sharper image, it also looks like a home video.
Just bought the LUT pack, I plan on getting an a6400 as a 2nd cam for wedding shoots. My main cam is an FS5II. The a6400, a7III, and FS5ii all use the same "Venice" color profile. You may want to relabel the LUT pack to Sony Venice LUT pack as it will be great for matching grades between all the new Sony cams with the Venice profiles. Sure I will get a little more contrast on my FS5 but thats something I can tweak after. May increase sales especially when the A7SIII comes out.
$4k camera can do the same of what red can do.. but when you are producing movie with hundreds of millions budget, you don't bother throwing 80k or more at it.. and I don't mind using red for movies cuz they have to keep lot details for edit and for 8k resolution. But I don't get the fukin point in marques and linus using several of red cameras.
Arri cameras are much cheaper and far better for RUclips too.
If there's RED in the title, I click.
Wow! Very nice dude. Got the a6300, buut will try to see if I can still use these guidelines
Well After watching your so many video I can recognise red and arri footage so easily even after colourgrading
Giveaway a6400👍👍👍👍💕💓
Sony looks way better. Red looks like hot garbage!
Lol
do you know anything about cameras lol
Searched the whole internet for a simple and clear explanation of HLG vs. SLOG, and yet none of everything I watched was as clear and straight to the point as the Potato Jet's video.
When I first started watched this channel I could never tell the difference but my eye has become more "trained" and now I can tell the cinema camera next the the consumer camera instantly
