Strength Rogue! So even the haft of the weapon will hurt...

  • Today I took a stab at the elusive Strength-Rogue character for D&D, 5th Edition. Utilizing some of the rules interactions that allow Handaxes to be considered a ranged weapon* whether you are in melee or not. (Source: Mike Mearls)
We are also using the interaction of the sharpshooter feat to really push this character over the top.
I think that if this was not a pure rogue build, taking rogue to 5 then multiclassing into barbarian 3 for rages and zealot bonus damage or bear totem resistance would be a very powerful build. Reckless attack means sneak attack every turn, and advantage more than offsets the penalty that sharpshooter would apply to us.

So here's the break down for weapons with the Thrown property.
Mearls is wrong btw, I don't care what his tweet said. There's a tweet from Crawford clarifying both this (only actual Ranged weapons or weapons with the Finesse property allow for Sneak Attacks) and what qualifies for the Sharpshooter Feat (that only the first 2 parts of the SS Feat work with a Dagger or any other melee thrown weapon). He also flat out states that his tweets on rules are the only official ones. The RAW are very clear on every aspect of all this.
*Thrown weapons use strength to hit and damage unless they also have the Finesse property, then they can used with dexterity and qualifies for Rogue Sneak Attack.
*The only qualification for Sneak Attack is Finesse or a Ranged weapon. Actual ranged weapons (as listed in the PHB 149) use dex only
*A melee weapon with the thrown property can be used melee or thrown. It is not a ranged weapon, it is a melee weapon that can be used to make a ranged attack. It's an important distinction.
*If you are dual wielding 2 Light melee weapons, as long as your off-hand (or both) has the Thrown property, you can absolutely throw your off-hand weapon on your Bonus action provided you made an attack (melee or thrown) with your main-hand weapon. It flat out states this PHB 195, second paragraph under the "Two-weapon Fighting" header. This is the only way outside of Crossbow Expert, the Fighter Maneuver, Swift Quiver spell or an Eldritch Knight's War Magic feature that you can make a ranged weapon attack on your Bonus action.
*Dart is not a melee weapon and doesn't qualify for two-weapon fighting.
*You still need the two-weapon fighting style to add your ability mod to the damage of a thrown off-hand attack.
*You need the Dual Wielder Feat to use 2 non-light weapons.
*Only Ranged weapons under the Headings "Martial Ranged Weapons" or "Simple Ranged Weapons" can qualify for the -5 hit/+10 damage part of the Sharpshooter feat, same goes for the Archery fighting style. Actual ranged weapons only. The only weapon with the Thrown property that qualifies for the Archery fighting style is Dart.
*Only Melee weapons with the Thrown property can qualify for the Dueling fighting style on a ranged attack.
Bottomline, if you want to be a Thrown weapon user that qualifies for Sneak Attacks, you have two choices, Daggers or Darts.
For a strength based Thrown weapon user that qualifies for Sneak Attack, Daggers are the only option.
To be able to use Sharpshooter and the Archery style with a Thrown weapon, Darts are the only option.
Edit: Forgot War Domain Cleric also being able to take a ranged attack with your bonus action.

Sneak attack with finesse weapons using strength multiplier i possible then?

      @Finnssssss Год назад

@Lauge yep definitely, as long as it's a finesse weapon. Exactly what Thug rogue builds do but also works when using Charisma as a Hexblade or Intelligence as a Battlesmith.
Most OP I ever saw at a table was a DM that gave out a +2 Greatsword Moonblade that had the Finesse property. It was one of those rare campaigns that went above level 17 so it wasn't crazy OP but still a nasty combo.
Also as an update, I should mention that one could argue that a Dart could be thrown with Strength due to the Thrown property despite it being classified as a Ranged weapon. That's something you should run through your Dm first.

Yeah this build is completely wrong RAW.

Awesome build dude! I’m working on a strength based BugBear Rouge currently. This was a huge help. Also you did a great job explaining everything. Going to keep an eye on your uploads!

When i google if you can use throw weapons for sneak attack or SS it says that is does not work unless it is finess.

Yeah, I think sneak attack requires either the finesse property (like dagger) or ranged property (like dart)

You can use a finesse weapon, and add the strength multiplier instead of dex

Yeah, my DM was not buying the argument of using hand axes to proc sharpshooter

But it's a real neat argument to make

Raw vs. Rai can be a tough cookie. The crux of the their argument is "intended," since RAW supports sharpshooter.
You could mention sharpshooter is specifically about aiming the attack, and should be valid for that reason.

A Moose totem barbarian could also make for some insane movement shenanigans with athletics and skirmisher!
There will be some serious readying issues with those throwing weapons with this build. You will at least need the throwing fighting style or the the dual wielder feat

Take about 4 levels of samurai fighter for fighting style, action surge, and Advantage

There is also strength based melee weapons that have the finesse property

Finesse lets you pick which stat to use. So every melee weapon is potentially strength based
