Joan Cusack is so underrated as well as her brother. She and Jack had great chemistry in this movie.
Joan is a sweetheart. My friend ran into her one Halloween at her Chicago house during trick-or-treat and was so nice and talked to her for 5 minutes. I met John Cusack twice in the Malibu Inn bar. Nicest guy who talks to people. He heard my Chicago accent and asked me how things were back in the Windy City. My gf and I had gotten a room at the Inn and was pulling me to go check in. When she left to check us in, John said "Thanks for the update, but never keep a lady waiting."! lol. When I was there with another gf 6 years later, he was there again at the Malibu and he remembered me! But he didnt out me about being with someone different. It didnt matter, but he assumed it might cause a problem and didnt say anything. Straight up great guy.
They did a reunion concert with the kids all grown up. You can really see their talent shine through.
Unfortunately, the kid that played the drums (Kevin Clark) passed away in 2021. But yes, he was a great drummer in this movie.

Yeah, he was a bike messenger and was hit by a car. Talented guy, so sad.
Jack Black hams it up mercilessly in a role that was absolutely made for him. Right from the very start when he tries to jump into the non- existent mosh pit you know this is going to be great. Being a musician myself, and having been around guys like this even makes it more fun. Some great bits in this film especially when he can't spell his name on the blackboard, and he says to the kids about Led Zeppelin 'don't tell me you guys never got the Led out'. Sarah Silverman is great as the the nagging girlfriend, and real satisfying ending. Just a great fun film.
The perfect example of a masterpiece of a movie that many wouldn’t think of putting into that category, but it truly is a perfect film. Flawless writing and directing, wonderful performances, and a role that was meant for no one else but Jack Black
Great reaction. This is easily my favorite Jack Black movie. Is it formulaic? Yes, absolutely. But it uses that formula magnificently, and the kids all give such incredible performances that the movie just radiates charm and joy.
This film was a lot of fun! So many hilarious characters and moments.😂 Great reaction!
RIP Kevin Clark (Freddy Jones, drummer) He was killed in a bike accident in 2021.

My favorite Joan Cusack movie is Toys from 1992 with Robin Williams.

Some of these parents remind me of my father. I was homeschooled for the first 15 years of my life and when I finally was allowed to go to real school, I got excited about making friends. He shut that down, telling me I’d never remember those kids anyway and that wouldn’t have time for them because I’d be at the kitchen table after school studying. I’ve never wished ill on anyone, except parents like that. I was forced to take classical piano when I really wanted to learn guitar and play in a band. As you would expect, religion was behind it all.
Other actors of note in this film are Joan Cusack (sister of John Cusack with many great film performances, including this one), Sarah Silverman as Jack's roommate's girlfriend (better known as a comic, but also a dramatic actor in films such as "Take This Waltz", "The Book of Henry", "I Smile Back") and of course, Mike White, Jack's roommate (lately better known as the writer, director and creator of HBO'S "The White Lotus").
This film was turned into a musical which ran on Broadway and London's West End from 2015 to 2021. Here is a performance from the Broadway cast at the 2016 Tony Awards:

It’s one of my favourite films of all time, and a great introduction to Richard Linklater. He also worked with Jack Black on Bernie, which is one of his more serious roles but also a great film.

On the DVD, there was a scene at the club with Jack Black & the whole audience behind him, personally asking Led Zeppelin to please let the film use their song.
