I personally believe that their original films are better than their respective follow ups because they introduce us to these characters and kicks off their journeys which gives away more impact

but you gotta understand that an original movie has its main plot and story, whereas a sequal adds more events to the plot, or makes the story more impactful and more relatable, if they even bother to make it a real film and not a cashgrab

I picture it as two sides of the same coin: the original film helps to introduce us to the world, the characters, and the overall experience of said films.
But, when it can, the sequel/prequels of the original can surpass them with expanding their respective worlds, introduce new concepts, and give growth to the characters already there.

I believe Pixar needs to make sequels so that they can get the money to fund more original projects. If they can’t make any money, then they can’t make anymore originals. Pixar said they are balancing originals and sequels, which I am fully supporting. It’s not like they can just go to their bank and make a loan of a million dollars. It’s not gonna work all the time. So to the people who think Pixar is only gonna do sequels, think again. Maybe you should use this time to actually study what goes on in the film business instead of just assuming.

Well, sometimes a sequel can surpass the quality of the original, depending on how well it's done. Mostly because the follow ups can expand on the characters' stories and bigger adventures

Rather you like it or not, it takes alot of time to make good original films now a days. Not because theyre running out of ideas, but because theres barely room for newer ideas. and animation budgets do take time. Its not like they havent made good originals. And its not like making sequels all the time is a bad thing either.

You do make a good point, whenever a good original project is successful, it would be a good IP. And Pixar did manage to make some solid sequels, even if for most of the franchises, I prefer the original. But for Toy Story I actually prefer the second and third installments, which is great because it goes to show that the franchise is worth continuing. And Inside Out, I’m honestly don’t have a clear preference as I do think they have their own strengths that makes them both great, in my opinion, that is.

Aside from originals novelty PIXAR sequels tend to rehash storylines w/ new coat of paint. Making them formulaic & safe due predecessor success but there are exceptions such Toy Story 4 & Finding Dory (to some extent because of Dory short term memory)

  • @ItsAaronsaccount05

I think that the Toy story sequels except 4 are better than the original, Cars 3 is better than the first one, and Inside Out 2 is on par with the Original

I just bought the incredibles and finding Nemo 2-packs on DVD so it becoming a trilogy annoys me just for that haha.
But I can concede there’s stories to tell with incredible’s 3 atleast and ZooTopia 2 fascinates me as a concept
but most of the time the original’s tell all the stories that could be told with slight diminishing returns thereafter
(but not as much as other people think.)

It depends on the sequels, Toy Story' sequels ( except 4 ) for example can be considered better than the first because they seek to tell something new while improving the narration.
1 talks about woody's jealousy towards buzz and 3 talks about abandonment for example.
But there are clearly sequels that cannot surpass the original like Incredibles 2 which, from my point of view, failed to keep the charm of the first film.
The vilains were flat and the film went a little in all directions

Imo I think the only Pixar sequels to exceed their predecessor is the Toy Story franchise. But with that said I think that sequels should only be there if original movies are more frequent as those are more preferable. However I think the only sequel that isn’t Toy Story related that is on par with their predecessor is inside out 2.

    Yeah, I generally agree.
Here's my personal ranking of each film in the current Pixar franchises:
    5. Lightyear (completely unnecessary, openly contradicts the lore from the second movie, and they purposely left a gay kiss in the movie because of the backlash)
    4. Toy Story 4 (completely unnecessary, still contradicts the message of the first three films even if not completely)
    3. Toy Story (original, classic, and started the best movie studio ever)
    2. Toy Story 3 (natural conclusion to the trilogy, but got a bit ridiculous sometimes)
    1. Toy Story 2 (natural progression of the story, but keeps the same lighthearted tone as the first one)
I haven't watched Monsters Inc in a while, so I don't remember it that well, so I'll skip that franchise.
    2. Finding Dory (not a bad sequel, did a good job expanding the world of Finding Nemo)
    1. Finding Nemo (in this case, the original just has that much good in it)
    2. The Incredibles 2 (still a great movie, but it hit all the same beats as the first one and had a generally weaker plot)
    1. The Incredibles (excellent movie, every element was a subversion of the genre and I love it)
    3. Cars 2 (terrible by Pixar standards, but still not among the worst movies I've ever seen)
    2. Cars 3 (basically the first movie from Doc's perspective)
    1. Cars (fun and creative)
And I haven't seen Inside Out 2, so I can't comment on that either.

How is Incredibles 2 a great movie if it reverses all the characters arcs, misunderstands the original’s messages and has such a weak twist villain?

@@Joe-rz3fd Maybe I am a bit wrong about the second one, but it absolutely does do the first one. They reset all the conflicts that very likely would have been resolved by the end of the first movie to some extent. Maybe not all of it, but so much of the public perception of superheroes should have been changed after their heroic defeat of the Omnidroid which would have caused plenty of damage to the city if there was no one there to stop it.

Honestly, Pixar sequels are hit-and-miss. Toy Story 2 and 3 are great, and way better than the first. TS4 is awful, so hopefully TS5 is good. Monsters University is also great, but the original is better. Inside Out 2 was better than the first in my opinion. Cars 2 is good, but a bad sequel. but not as good as the original. Cars 3 is my favorite of the trilogy. Finding Dory is good, and Incredibles 2 is awful.
