What I love about this scene is that Anger and Joy work together in imagination land to help the mind workers find courage to fight anxiety. Because what happens is they start a rebellion, and the fact that rebellion is something driven by the dual emotions of anger and joy is brilliant! You don't usually think of those two emotions working together or harmonizing at all, but in real life, when they do, they spark rebellion for a better, more idealistic future and I love how Pixar pointed this out
I saw the movie the other night with my friend and we agreed that this scene was basically the entire creative team holding up a “help me” sign like Wile E Coyote.

It makes sense Pixar would do this. During an extreme deadline crunch for Toy Story 2, a man who worked at Pixar had to drop off his infant son at daycare before going to work. A few hours after getting to work, his wife (who also worked at Pixar) asked him if he dropped their son off. It turned out that he was so burnt out that he had left their son in the car in the middle of summer. The child survived, but Pixar took measures afterwards to prevent against burnout and maintain the health of their employees.
This same thing happened but to an Amazon worker, whose poor kid was not so lucky. She did not know the kid would decide to distract themself with the AC knobs, they turned it off, and overheated to death, because Amazon refuses its workers any sort of proper breaks, so she never had the chance to go check on her child. That poor woman then had to go to trial for murder for it. Amazon is a disgusting disgrace, and it's why I won't shop from them when I can avoid it.
I've never seen 1984 or the Apple commercial, so I just saw the scene as PIXAR calling out the unfair conditions of animators. It made me laugh the second it started and I adore the scene. I'm happy I'm not the only one who noticed.
My brother and I saw Inside Out 2 last week and we loved it. I personally loved it because I'm an adult and cartoons are my special interest. I love Disney animated movies and tv shows like Inside Out, Turning Red, The Owl House, Amphibia and The Ghost & Molly McGee because of their themes of found family, friendship and acceptance of being different from others. This scene in Inside Out 2 was amazing I do hope that there will be major changes in the animation industry so that creators will get the creative freedom they deserve and for me personally, I do hope someday that we will see The Owl House and The Ghost & Molly McGee again.
That is what I hate about Chris Stuckmann refusing to criticize Madame Web; he has a point in addressing the troubles with studio executives not giving their directors and writers enough creative freedom, but he also gives the film creators too much sympathy to realize that what makes Madame Web so bad is through some faults of their own, not just Sony butchering a potentially good storyline.
Yeah, when that scene came up in my watch party (yes we bought 60 dollars of movie tickets), we all mutually agreed that it was a Mappa Studios moment.

As a new professional animator, this scene made me feel so validated. I'm glad people are finally speaking out about how insane some of our work practices are. Here's hoping the industry improves itself in the future!
In the first movie, Happiness tasks Fear with theorizing the worst scenarios for Riley's first day of school. Why does Anxiety exist if Fear was already responsible for worrying Riley?
Anxiety said she plans for stuff later on. While fear catastrophically the first day of school. Anxiety is the worries about one's social life in the future after that day. All the ways in which things go wrong. Not just what goes wrong now, but all the bad consequences that will arise in the future and to fret over these things constantly. i noticed this the first time in theaters. i joked to my friend (who was watching it with me) "is disney trying to say something?" i hope they get better, i really do.
The part where Riley “Wants” Joy is such a Pivotal Moment. Why? Because it showcases what emotions should actually do. People should NOT be controlled by their Emotions, rather, People have the power to chose how they feel. You Chose how to react to things, and you chose how to feel in situations.
Funny thing when I first whatched the movie, in this scene I literally had that thought and that made filled with mixed feelings, I'm so happy that I was not the only one to noticed that
Perfect explanation... also if we get more bizarre scenes and characters, mainly referring to the whole absurd scene of the emotions being bottled up in the vault and introducing two hilarious spoof characters, that's what I crave. We need MORE of that, we need more Lance Slashblade and Bloofys in the Pixar, and animation as a whole, roster. 🌌
@@chobies5383 I’ll be honest, I was typing out that same statement until I changed my mind. I was saying we need more things like “The Shippening” episode, where they show off absurdities constantly… we need more of that in animation in general, META ABSURDITY!
From where I'm standing, personal and deeply meaningful storytelling was partially what got Disney out of their slump pre-renaissance and got them to fire on all cylinders with classics like... well, there were a lot of classical films that they then burned out through mostly poorly made TV show compilations that they advertised as sequel movies to those exact same classics. Movies like Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and a whole load of other movies that were both made by Disney animators, or were made and produced under Disney, mostly came out of films like Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro (The Great Mouse Detective) and a whole slew of American films and animated works were inspired by either older material or from the creator's own personal lives. And seeing how much Disney slights everyone for having original, fun ideas and has been deliberately sabotaging creativity for easy profits, even among things they now consider classics within their own catalog, shows just how little faith Disney has in entertainment as a whole. Disney does not want anything that the company was mostly founded on, they only want the illusion of their "Disney Magic" just so they can handwave anything anyone says against them, and whenever someone doesn't fall for their branding and aggressive propaganda tactics? They immediately crush them with Legal Action and a huge amount of cash at their own fingertips. Disney enjoys being on top of the more than the things that brought them to where they are now, and eventually, when everyone turns on them because of just how scummy their behavior has been and after everyone finds out that Disney is one of the more historically insidiously abusive partners that would rather settle for mediocrity than fire on all cylinders 7 times out of 10, Disney will have nothing but A.I. to carry them to victory, and even then, after everyone has left Disney or the only people left are those who are willing and enabled to take risks for Disney, the leavers will create things better than the A.I. and the keepers will not work with A.I. nor the demands of the higher-ups to be the people who make the corporate slop to keep up with needing movies to sell. After Disney is done from making almost everyone around them done with their nonsense, they'll realise how important it is to respect those who have ideas they want to share.
Great idea! I’m guessing the animator at 7:16 , the first one to imagine something new and positive for Riley, looks similar to the actual person who boarded this scene! Especially considering the features this being has that almost no one else does-the hat and sunglasses, the mustache and goatee, and the relaxed way they lean back in their chair with one leg crossed over the other. The only other animator with unique features like this is shown at 3:33 - 3:39 . Perhaps their design is based on another storyboarder?
2:22 I would've gotten this more if Brick in the Wall was mentioned lol. Mostly kidding, different environment, but similar situation, the lack of individuality, freedom, and taking control of a large body of people... in this case of Inside Out 2, quite literally and pun not intended, but fits well, huh neat wonder if that was what they were going for.
The moment that one imagination artist with the hat and the beard got highlighted, I was like "yeah, that's a real guy, isn't it?" And it was indeed a tribute to a real animator who had passed away.
I thought it was a brilliant move, GENIUS just like you said, how Anxiety is the BIG BROTHER (Big Sister in this case?), the chair been thrown at the screen like if it was the hammer, it's also a nice homage to the most famous and most important ad ever (should be in the Library of Congress) especially considering how important Steve Jobs was for the history of Pixar, I wish he was alive to see this. Now I'm wondering if Ridley Scott saw Inside Out 2, what did he thought about this scene?🤔
I actually never saw this! This is actually amazing! The scene itself was really cool and a great metaphor, but when you look at it that way, it becomes better.
hopefully, Disney will learn from their mistakes and maybe continue some of their old shows like the Owl House Gravity Falls, minus Amphibia because it already ended on a good note, but spin off or a a conic or two wouldn't hurt (though if they continue The Ghost & Molly McGee, they'll have to retcon the season 2 finale as a dream or something), but it's very unlikely Disney will do that unless they have a new CEO
Gravity Falls, unlike The Owl House and The Ghost and Molly McGee, actually ended on the creator's terms. Alex intended the story to have two seasons only, and has no plans on continuing it anytime soon.
The fact they went through *this* shows how Pixar differs from Disney, despite them being the same company, and I honestly think they nailed it here. 😅
2:07 tldr for the plot: 1984 takes place in a city where the whole dictatorship, "you must worship me" thing is taken to it's logical extreme. It actually popularised the idea of a dystopian future.
I’m honestly still surprised we’ve managed to get such an amazing movie from Disney, recently. In recent years, as you’ve said, the quality has diminished, and Disney and Pixar’s new movies have been lukewarm, at best. But this is just an incredibly well-made movie, and I know I’m gonna start rewatching it like crazy once it comes to streaming.
Companies that referenced 1984: • Apple (Introducing Macintosh) • Valve (Introducing Half Life 2 onto Mac) • Epic Games (Removing Fortnite from Apple Devices) • Pixar (Inside Out 2) idk anymore
As a hobbyist animator, I wondered immediately if this was whoever was in charge of the scene's veiled way of airing their own frustrations with the work environment at Pixar/Disney.
This was my favorite scene in the movie. This is the most antagonistic Anxiety gets, and it really gives Joy the opportunity to show her own strengths while facing off against her. Plus dude who drew a cat is unironically my favorite character in the movie.
I've had a moment similar to this scene as well. It was February break in school, and it was Friday, so we almost had to go back. I realized something. Something felt... incomplete. I hadn't done any work on the project that was due the week we got back. I started panicking quietly, I could not sleep. Thinking of all the ways I could screw it up. The presentation, my voice... It was 2 in the morning. The only person who was awake was my dad, who works the night shift. I called him, and he reassured me that it would be alright. He would help me with the project and make sure I handed it in on time. He acted as Joy did in the scene, presenting good things that could happen. Eventually, all the bad thoughts were gone and I could sleep peacefully. the project was due the week after we got back so yay that was all for nothing...
I somehow didnt realize that it was about this. I was very focused on the psychology aspect and when that scene turned up, specifically the revolt from the workers, I was like “wait.. i can’t think of any real life equivalents to this” lmao, it’s just funny to me bc im also very interested in art and animation and I recognized those desks and just didn’t put two and two together
Ironically, Anxiety feeding Riley's worries throughout the night would increase her chances of failure due to Riley's brain being incapable of focusing clearly.
I never thought Pixar would do this! I actually watched this specific scene and thought it was actually a really neat scene. I never realized what it could mean outside of the message the movie was trying to portray, but I actually like the point of view you described about it.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this because it's such a good scene. And while Anxiety isn't actually a bad person (emotion?), the way her face covers the whole screen while watching over her workers is definitely similar to how CEOs or bosses stand over their employees.
The part where Disgust says "Joy reality is a thing" I couldn't help but to laugh out loud since that's kinda how my brain goes... it makes a situation that possibly won't happen
When watching the movie in the cinema I whispered to my girlfriend: "Holy shit, that's Apple 1984", she didn't get it, so I showed her the original ad immediately when walking out the theatre^^ I'm so glad I can now show her this and prove that I'm not crazy! Thx!

Xactly!
Clever! 1:51
Yes 7:14
I could probably learn a thing or two from this aswell, as anxiety has been an absolute dictator in my life and I've had enough.
i swear anxiety looks like a fucking rare wubbox
7:17 is that the "man looking at the wrong woman" meme format in the top right ?
YEAH IT IS OMG
This is also a reference from “1984” (1984)🧡
when i saw the scene i LITERALLY went "Ayo that's Mappa"
I actually never saw this! This is actually amazing! The scene itself was really cool and a great metaphor, but when you look at it that way, it becomes better.
I felt the same way about this too!! I’m surprised not many people, if non, are talking about this
I never thought I’d see the day where Inside Out 2 would reference an apple commercial
hopefully, Disney will learn from their mistakes and maybe continue some of their old shows like the Owl House Gravity Falls, minus Amphibia because it already ended on a good note, but spin off or a a conic or two wouldn't hurt (though if they continue The Ghost & Molly McGee, they'll have to retcon the season 2 finale as a dream or something), but it's very unlikely Disney will do that unless they have a new CEO
Agreed!
Gravity Falls, unlike The Owl House and The Ghost and Molly McGee, actually ended on the creator's terms. Alex intended the story to have two seasons only, and has no plans on continuing it anytime soon.
@@yeeyeeyeeye at least there is that The Book of Bill book coming out this month
i thought i was the only one who actually thought of this, i was with my uncle and i told him lol
7:13 did anyone see the meme template in the top right???
The fact they went through *this* shows how Pixar differs from Disney, despite them being the same company, and I honestly think they nailed it here. 😅
2:07 tldr for the plot:
1984 takes place in a city where the whole dictatorship, "you must worship me" thing is taken to it's logical extreme. It actually popularised the idea of a dystopian future.
2:02 big brother is watching
Litteraly 1984,
Old Anxiety is watching you
It's also funny that the drafts instantly become final rendered images, like, that's how easy and fast corpos think animations are done.
I’m honestly still surprised we’ve managed to get such an amazing movie from Disney, recently. In recent years, as you’ve said, the quality has diminished, and Disney and Pixar’s new movies have been lukewarm, at best.
But this is just an incredibly well-made movie, and I know I’m gonna start rewatching it like crazy once it comes to streaming.
as an overexploited 3d artist myself the scene where Anxiety was playing dictatorship on the drawers, it hit home really hard.
I saw it in the theater and leaned toward my animation student friend and said "This scene is the industry right now!!"
i cant stop thinking “egg sandwich” when i watch that apple ad
Anybody else noticed her rainbow shirt has the 5 main colors of each emotion in the first movie and then orange right after (for anxiety)
Companies that referenced 1984:
• Apple (Introducing Macintosh)
• Valve (Introducing Half Life 2 onto Mac)
• Epic Games (Removing Fortnite from Apple Devices)
• Pixar (Inside Out 2)
idk anymore
bro explained IN FULL DETAIL WITH APPLES an obvious scene
During that scene in the theater, I was very tempted to yell out “EAT THE GOVERNMENT!!!” Idk, just gave those vibes
it's the Macintosh ad parody
As a hobbyist animator, I wondered immediately if this was whoever was in charge of the scene's veiled way of airing their own frustrations with the work environment at Pixar/Disney.
Mappa studios watching the conditions at Pixar. Oh it's a peaceful day?
This was my favorite scene in the movie. This is the most antagonistic Anxiety gets, and it really gives Joy the opportunity to show her own strengths while facing off against her. Plus dude who drew a cat is unironically my favorite character in the movie.
The fact that Disney let this scene into the movie might be hope for the future.
That scene was easily in the top 3 best scenes of the whole movie.
THEY INCLUDED THE "dude checking other girl" MEME 7:17 top right corner
the whole animation team had fun with this scene
YOOOO WAIT THAT'S COOL
Ironically, Anxiety feeding Riley's worries throughout the night would increase her chances of failure due to Riley's brain being incapable of focusing clearly.
This were exactly my thoughts while watching this scene!!! My brother and I even thought that this scenario looked extremely specific.
I got all the 1984 references on my first viewing in the theater!
The way anxiety was honestly hit an emotional nerve for me.
i also love the scene because in the first movie imagination world was happiness world and now anxiety over took it and made it hers
When watching the movie in the cinema I whispered to my girlfriend: "Holy shit, that's Apple 1984", she didn't get it, so I showed her the original ad immediately when walking out the theatre^^ I'm so glad I can now show her this and prove that I'm not crazy! Thx!
left-middle-bottom monitor shows the boyfriend meme with the imaginary boyfriend and riley at 0:46
Woah… this gives the scene a whole new perspective.
I thought I was REACHING trying to relate the scene to the irl animators I feel so validated
I was so surprised that Disney of all people were like “yeah this looks like a good scene” when I first saw it like WHAT
They knew people would like it, and in the end, money is all that matters to them. Reminds me of 8 million merits (black mirror)
Or, hear me out, the idea of rebellion in a large consumer media product sells. No need for 4D mind chess, it’s a scene about anxiety and mass media, with maybe a hint towards animation in specific. Way shorter than eight minutes
