- On March 23, 1989 the Exxon Valdez an oil supertanker operated by Exxon left the port of Valdez headed for Long beach, CA with almost 54 million gallons of crude oil on board. Shortly after midnight on March 24, 1989, the supertanker collided with Bligh Reef, a well known navigation hazard, ruptured 8 of its 11 cargo tanks and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the pristine waters of Prince William Sound. The result was catastrophic. Although the spill was radioed in shortly after the collision Exxons response was slow. In fact, there was no recovery effort for three days while Exxon searched for clean up equipment. During that time millions of gallons of oil began to spread down the coast. Days later as the clean up effort began the oil slick was no longer containable. It eventually extended 470 miles to the southwest, contaminated hundreds of miles of coastline. This website is from Riki Ott, PhD, a marine oil pollution expert and former commercial fisherman in Alaska's Prince William Sound. She was on the scene before, during, and after the Exxon Valdez oil spill and experienced firsthand the spill's effects, including environmental devastation, economic losses to the fishing industry, and psychosocial trauma to the close-knit community. i wil never forget this
i have a piece of the rock that they removed from the hull of that ship..my father helped with the aftermath, and helped work on that ship after the spill.
Cheers from Nova Scotia Canada
But cpt hazelwwod was not in charge before the crash. Exxon company policies had the greatest role to play in the many cuases of the crash.
I am doing a news paper article in class about this, I was really upset seeing the animals and birds dying because of the oil in the ocean. Its so horrible. And it actually happened on the 24th of March 1980 shortly after midnight. :)
1980? The ship wasn't even built in 1980. Pretty sure it was 1989 like the video discription says.
i was skiing at crystal mountain near greenwater washington
when the exxon valdez went aground ..the next morning filled up the gas tank of truck headed north ..and 72 hrs later was in valdez alaska..30 days later .went out to the beach on smith island with the first clean up crew ..what a fraking mess...made alot of money ..didn't clean up too much oil ....still a mess now 20 yrs later ..dig down on most beaches and you will find oil .
prince william sound will never be the same
peace out
22 yrs later
dig a hole on any beach
in prince william sound
and there will be oil ..
forever and ever...
was it worth it...
Yes.
Greg Palast stated in 2008 "Forget the drunken skipper fable. As to Captain Joe Hazelwood, he was below decks, sleeping off his bender. At the helm, the third mate would never have collided with Bligh Reef had he looked at his Raycas radar. But the radar was not turned on. In fact, the tanker's radar was left broken and disabled for more than a year before the disaster, and Exxon management knew it. It was [in Exxon's view] just too expensive to fix and operate."[12
How many people had a friend who's last name was Valdez and they got the nickname Exxon?
...i don't know
Judging by the # of likes and myself , 4
so far...
I disvovered at this time, while driving around in San Francisco because I'm an HVAC tech that ther is a Valdez street and right near it is Hazelwood st... WTF ???
Its amazing how some people JUST do not learn from the past mistakes of our arrogance and selfish ways.
great vid by the way
I hope the current spill caused by the explosion and sinking of the oil rig of the coast of the US will not be as bad at this. But my pessimistic side is saying it just might, last figure from the news said that they expect it to top around 4.3 Million gallons..
Dear Jason, I disagree - Mobile assumes responsibilty for the tragic results of Exxon's past decisions. I hope you are correct about Mobile being more responsible - but they have to prove it. The oil industry continues to have a horrible record on occupational and environmental health and safety.
@Dragonfly6160 Because people forget quickly or never learned of the disaster
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1:23 the sound of a man who knows his maritime career is over.
sounds like he was drunk!
It could have been BPs LOL! "well it is this time 8:34"
2019??Anybody???
Kamila Segundo
Coronavirus?
Welp sorry Valdez we have a bigger problem here in 2010
And to think. Not even a year after this video is made - another spill.
it's bullshite how Hazelwood gets so much blame for this. it was a long night and so what if he had a few drinks to take the edge off? he did nothing wrong and he should've sued the govt for all the wrongdoing they did to him. Hazelwood was actually heroic, if not for his quick response this could've been tragic
I agree Hazelwood was not the cause of the grounding of the Exxon Valdez. Many decisions made or influenced by Exxon and other oil companies were the true cause of the spill
I'm retired from the USCG and my boss was the lead investigator for the grounding. There was no doubt that Hazelwood had been drinking and was likely impaired but that isn't why they made the turn too late. The ship was on auto pilot at the time. The mate on watch ordered the helmsman to change course. The helmsman didn't know how to shut off the auto pilot (the switch was right by his knee and if he moved the tiller it would shut off the auto pilot). The mate on watch didn't notice because he was out of the bridge wing chatting up the attractive young woman who just joined the crew. By the time the helmsman put the rudder over 18 minutes had passed. The ship had travelled several miles in that time and they ended up running aground. The rest is history.
While this was repeated widely during the BP Gulf spill, it is simply not true. I worked on the spill on worker health issues for the Laborers Union. We saw lots of problems and exposures but no mass death among the 10,000+ cleanup workers has occurred. But more must be done to protect future oil spill cleanup workers.
Captain : "..and.. eventually... leaking some oil😉"
Actually that "leaking some oil " was 6,700,000 Gallons 🫣within 4 hours
They are double haul ships now? I would hope so.
All tankers are double hull now .
The images of the oil covered birds in the Gulf of Mexico tell me all I need to know about oil.
"what would become the largest oil spill cleanup in history." ... that is until 20 years later when BP would cause the worst ecological disaster in history.
@chena3
Very strong comment.
Proud to be a Republican!
+electricalron Proud to be a Democrat!
that's your problem
electricalron lol
what actually occurred was the Exxon and Alyeska - when approached to sign the contract for piping to the bay there was a proviso that a sound and reasonable contingency plan was in place in the event of an 'event' or 'incident' - the personages whom deigned to sign the contract lied and said there was. People - well citizens and taxpayers should never allow ANY MEANS NECESSARY folk to position themselves into employments positions in civil impact businesses or in governance administration.
Why is it Val-deez?
That is how they pronounce the name in Alaska.
es it is from the earth but that doesn't mean we need to pull it out in such mass quanties
man, i wish people would find safer and stronger ways to move oil!
Prince Rupert and Lord Kitimat would be very upset still.
it became bp later on
no drinking on the job
out of sight out of mind ....?

@Liynkx
i am sure he does not care
Captain Hazelwood was a drunk and the reason he was not in charge was because he had been drinking that night, before they disembarked and ordered crew members to man the ship that should have never been granted that authority in the first place, hence why they crashed. Plus Exxon knew of Hazelwoods drinking issues before they hired him and certain crew members reported his erratic drinking problems during his tenure with Exxon to higher ups and yet nothing was done so it was Exxon's fault
Again this is just not true. lots of chemical exposures of concern that should not be repeated in future cleanups but let's not spread facts that are not true.
Se ve que lo cuentan interesante,
Pero esta en ingles ;, (

@Dragonfly6160
Animal transportation IS renewable. I'm not against new technologies for solar, wind etc. but there are circumstances animal transport would be possible and desirable.
100000 here
I forgot to mention the approach these people attempted to take. When no interest in conducting an commercial enterprise with sound environmental practises and 'Attitude equates to success' - and attempting to develop authority with arrogance; by attempting to treat or regard 'locals' as numbskulls. This is the conditions the situation and legal scenario was subject to with various of these people such as David Kennedy. 20 years on the legal situation and environment clean up is far from cool
that is horrible!!!
wish i could say the same about you...
@chena3 he'll yes it was worth it
he even sounds faded in tape lol DRUNK AZZ!!!
How could Alaska elect "Drill Baby Drill" Palin for governor after this?
About to re elect her.
@ejgeee77 Calling people names is meaningless. Post whatever argument you have against my comment.
4:20 for presentation
Every oil monger on the planet should be given life imprisonment without parole.
Every oil company should be confiscated by the sovereign people.
Butch Cassidy and what about people like you who use the oil...?
Okay crazy man.
