Bought the kit and got to work on my TT with my dad a couple weekends back. The passenger side didn't need it but got it fitted anyway. Works like an absolute charm!! Highly recommend this fix to anyone having those stubborn taillight issues.
Brilliant. Couldn’t understand the cause of my dim rear near side lights nor the intermittent bulb failure warnings until I saw this. Bought your kit, and the extra earth mod just for good measure. Came quickly, all very neatly made, clear instructions. I’m no mechanic but was able to fit them easily enough. First light probably took me about an hour because I was being super careful while also reviewing your video. Also wasn’t sure how much force was needed when removing the light cluster and also the rubber grommet. The offside light took less than 10 minutes since I knew what I was doing by then. I found that threading the earth down through the offside was actually easier than the nearside, despite the battery being close by. Anyway, all cleaned up and very pleased. Thank you.
A couple of months ago I noticed my offside tail lights flickering, and, after seeing the badly burned earth pin on the connector block, I promptly ordered this kit.. I couldn't be bothered over Xmas to sort it out, and then, lo and behold, the dash reported faulty bulbs.. 3 days later, I braved the -4°C and fitted the new earth to both sides.. RESULT! Thanks for this very clear tutorial about a common issue of TT. I had this problem since a while on my left rear lights , and my Audi garage never solved it. I followed exactly your process and honestly I found it easier than I thought 😅 The most difficult was to catch the earth wire behind side wall of hatch , because I didn't remove it . For the rest, everything was OK . When I started the engine , the yellow alarm was still here , but it disappeared when switching the left indicator , and till now , never came back 🎉 Thx for your precious help ! Cheers mate. Just done both side on my mrs TT I took it to a garage couple of years ago and then the other side burnt out aswell, so got round to doing this rewire today and worked a trick. I just used one wire maybe 1meter or so and just tucked the excess behind the card in the boot. Had a look at the other light the garage “fixed”. Proper bodge job compared to this. Re done that side aswell Saved me £100 Thank you for posting 💪🏽
@@CarChris82 saw the kit on eBay. Very well put together and well priced. Went to the local hardware store and got the parts myself and ending up spending more than the cost of the kit so I highly recommend that for others who want to do this. Hardest part of the instal was running the wire down on the side with the battery, took me a while to contort my hand into a position where I could grab the wire. Besides that, a very very easy install. Thanks again.
Hi Chris just did this by pass earth repair on my tt after having the same issues with the rear left lights, it worked a treat, it was the brown wire at the rear of the boot you earthed to just checking as that's what I earthed mine to, just want to be sure I got it right. Your vlog saved me £££ Cheers😂👍
Hello from Canada Chris. My 2010 TTS has been very reliable with the exception of a few minor annoyances like the one in this YT video. I didn't even know this was a common issue when it happened to me. One of the male pins in the corner of the connector was completed burnt to a crisp and the plastic around it was also melted. Oddly, it only happened on the right side tail-light. I ordered the whole interior bulb holder part. After installing the defective part, I was still getting the trouble light intermittently, so I pulled the tail-light again to investigate. It turns out that the female connector that the tail-light plugs into wasn't "pinching" that one (grounding?) male pin properly. (I think it was for the ground and it was too loose.) I wedged the "pinching" metal mechanism on that female connector so that what the male pin inserted into it was a tight fit and I haven't had a problem since. I will pull it next summer to see if there are signs of overheating. If it continues to be problematic, I will order your kit. Thanks for diagnosing and figuring out a repair that the stealership simply wanted me to continue throwing money at the problem--as usual. Good job! Worthy of a like and subscription.
Great vid. I cleaned the original connectors up which is ok, but would definitely buy a kit from you and do this mod to avoid that bulb out warjihg again.
Just did it. Not too painful at all. To be honest I think your kit is really helpful as it allows you to just crack on with the job rather than fanny around with heat shrink etc. Putting the boot lining in was a lot easier than getting it out 🤣 is there a trick to reseating the light unit? Fiddled for ages and it doesn't feel quite as flush as I think it should, despite checking the position of the connector etc. It seems weird to me that such a wide unit is only held in by a single bolt.
@@dh1380 thanks for your positive comment 👍🏻and regards to fitting the light back in there is plenty of space for the cable but you could try pushing in the excess through the hole into the car but shouldn't be nessary also make sure you have position the light on the locators on the side properly before fitting the bolt and tightening
@@CarChris82 yep figured it out eventually. As soon as i said about a single screw it hit me there must be something else. You have to position the light slightly left or right of centre then push. Cheers bud. So weird that mine uses the locking wheel nut to loosen the bolt for the light unit. You can't get much leverage on it to unscrew it.
Brilliant thanks for this. Fitted yesterday, although still some gremlins when I fitted back in, presumably from a couple of dodgy bulbs, but wil see how it goes going forward. One question - is there a need to disconnect the original earth at all? Will a burned out connector still cause some issues? Thanks!
Hi I would advise to clean the burnt out connector best you can but yes the plug needs to be connected 👍🏻 Make sure kit is fitted correctly and is touching the metal parts it needs to also if your still experiencing problems you may need to fit the ground plane jumper kit which connects the upper and lower earth planes (which is avaliable on my ebay store) Cheers Chris
Nice work! Camera work is coming up really nicely! Sometimes you need a jumper cable between the two banks of lights inside the unit.
