And yet, we can compare some aspects. a) Lucas and Nathan’s character: Lucas is very formal. Nathan is very awkward. b) Nathan & Elizabeth: end up in a very intimate position and only realize this AFTER they get lost in each other’s gaze. c) Lucas & Elizabeth: end up in a somewhat intimate position and have very short eye contact WHILST Elizabeth withdraws her arm. d) Lucas & Elizabeth: are dating here. So this scene accentuates in what a rough spot their relationship is. e) Nathan & Elizabeth: are NOT dating. This scene showcases that they have an attraction to each other. f) Nathan & Elizabeth: the moment of attraction happens DESPITE Allie’s being there. And I assume Allie is the reason Elizabeth snaps out of it (she turns to look at Allie). g) Lucas & Elizabeth: instead of attraction there seems to be shock. I assume this is because of Elizabeth’s guilt about holding hands with Nathan. h) Lucas is the one to break eye-contact first with Elizabeth. When he seeks it again she is already “fleeing”. i) Elizabeth is the one to break eye-contact first with Nathan. Neither one of them seeks it again, but they stayed in the moment much longer (this is why the scenes don’t line up perfectly) j) Lucas isn’t all that fazed by being close to Elizabeth here. k) Nathan is processing a lot of emotions- his mouth is open, his eyes move around. He is feeling a lot here and it shows us that this moment of closeness took him off-guard.
More times than one time, Nathan has been inside Elizabeth's house, decorated a Christmas tree together, which Elizabeth looked effected in a positive way. She has comfortable conversations with Nathan, even heated ones, like when Nathan confessed about why Jack was ordered to Fort Clay, why Nathan was reprimanded for a violation in the mounties. All Elizabeth wants is truths... where Lucas in concerned, Lucas seems to force his advances towards Elizabeth more times, she is feeling more uncomfortable up to this point.

What I have noticed about these two scenes is the direction Elizabeth turns each time. With Nathan she turns almost a 180 to meet Nathan’s gaze. It’s very intentional because she could have easily snuck out from under his arm, but she didn’t. She turned IN to Nathan. With Lucas, she found herself in the same position, but she immediately slips out via the shortest turn possible backing up and out (which is the opposite direction she turned with Nathan).

To me this is one of the final moves that Lucas makes to get Elizabeth to finally choose him. After seeing them outside holding hands at the reception Lucas is making a final play. He knows he is losing ground fast. Trying to intimidate Nathan did not work now he is trying to get into Elizabeth's personal space to make a connection and it is not working. She did not even say goodbye after the reception. This is a last whim to reach her romantically . She is not feeling what she did with Nathan and really is uncomfortable and not at ease. Almost like stalking. Especially when in a distance Nathan rides by on his horse. Lucas observes that also. He knows his last play has failed. As he passes by in the A.M. he sees Nathans horse at her house. He does have one last play it is to let her go and appear to be valiant. Again he will not enter her home. He does not want to discuss the problem or even get personal. It was never about love it was about control and a plan to have Elizabeth fall for him by using trips, books, dinners, a book deal, fancy wine and fancy picnics made by a French chef... Those are things. Elizabeth has had those before and they were not what was important to her. She is finally remembering that.. That is why she left the city so she could teach and serve those around her. She is becoming who she was before she became afraid of possibly losing Nathan like she lost Jack.
Well, it took forever but your analysis is correct, but Elizabeth did choose Lucas as a safe relationship & then broke up with him because she was afraid to be with Nathan at the end of S8. The difference from me is that Nathan sees Eluzabeth as perfectly capable and offers to help her with her endeavor. Lucas is like ..allow me...aka I'll do it instead of you. Everything seems more like a partnership with Nathan to me he's needy sometimes and Elizabeth can help him. Lucas teams to see himself as the man that should take care of and be responsible for everything. I know many many school teachers all extremely capable of taking care of so many things at one time and helping others. I don't see Elizabeth as someone who wants to be doted upon, needy... but as a partner that could be useful, helpful and capable as well. #Team Nathan!

He was clearly affected by it and I’d like to watch it 109 times but before now could not find the clip. You know who Lucas reminds me of is Charles, Elizabeth's friend from Hamilton who tries to woo her from hope valley. So proper and collected and smooth. In the end Elizabeth leaves him and Hamilton for hope valley and ultimately Jack Thornton. I think she will make the correct decision again and pick the man the embodies all of the same values the Jack did... Nathan.

season 6 it was Lucas got the dance, Nathan got the glace, season 7 it was Nathan got the hug and Lucas had the shrug, this season Lucas got the date, but Nathan was Fate! #teamNathan
Binging through se7-8 again and it is clear now as a bell, that Elizabeth is so terrified of loving a mountie again - no matter how beautifully she is encouraging Clara or Ned - when there's a small intimate moment happening to her with Nathan, she initiates a move towards Lucas... I know for sure who she really loves.
In season eight, grief is a main topic. Elizabeth has said that she hasn’t been herself. Allie has mentioned that Nathan hasn’t been himself since Fort Clay. They’ve had challenges. Throughout the season, Elizabeth has given Nathan the “cold shoulder.” Lucas has gotten all the dates. She has said no to kissing Lucas. She has had issues with Rosemary. I wonder that now that things are changing, now that she is in good terms with Nathan, this is a sign of her beginning to heal. If she will listen to her heart and finally see clearly what lies ahead for her. Clarity. Clarity to set things right. To give herself a chance to love. To settle or to fight for love. To work things out with her friend Rosemary. To see what she really needs in her life.

So when I watched this I also found it interesting considering time and place, how comfortable and happy Elizabeth is with Nathan giving her a little assistance in NATHAN’s house - not even her own home turf. However she’s uncomfortable in HER classroom with Lucas helping her. It’s almost a territorial issue
Oh another thing I forgot to write in my pinned comment: Elizabeth says “Thank you” to Nathan but not to Lucas. It’s interesting to consider if she really needed or wanted Lucas help here or if he -in her opinion- overstepped a line. In my opinion he’s just being a gentleman. But she did hang up the other stuff all by herself too, right? She might be thinking that it’s unnecessary for him to do this and that’s why we see some annoyance in her face. And in the scene where Nathan helps her she gives him an obvious sign that she needs help - she giggles and makes this weird little noise that I don’t know what to call. And she thanks him which shows us that she indeed wanted him to help. Thoughts?
Yeah. She made no indication that she needed his help, even though he wanted to give it anyway. It’s interesting that she seemed to be VERY comfortable with that position she was in with Nathan, than in the same position she was with the man she was currently dating. All this time she’s been dating him, we’ve said that Lucas is her security blanket, her safety, where everything is not a what if he’s going to die and leave me… she has been comfortable with him, and kinda agitated when she’s around Nathan at times. Then this scene happens. How the tables have turned, indeed. It’s like she didn’t want to be near him. She inched away from the man she is dating when she has been in many intimate situations with him. I like to think that when she saw Nathan, it’s almost as if she was trying to reach out to him with her mind to come and rescue her from Lucas… but that’s my mind for you… But yes back to the comparisons. When I saw this scene, all I could think about was that scene when they were decorating the tree and I was hoping you would put up a comparison video. 48 more hours to go… we can do this!!!
Another thing… I really do hope that Lucas is not seeing Elizabeth for a woman who can’t take care of herself. She’s not just a widow, she is a strong woman and can take care of herself and Jack. Like you observed, she put everything else up just fine without him, so why did he think that she needed his help when she didn’t even make a sound to suggest otherwise? Yeah that was definitely a look of annoyance. Heck, I was even annoyed…

The fact that SHE turned around to lock eyes with Nathan and stayed that CLOSE to him for a minute (with ALLIE right there) and they did the same while searching for the tree but with Lucas, she moves away SO FAST and she is actually "DATING " Him, then "Im not a good company" she is never is a good company with Lucas (she has used that line with him before), it means that she is upset and rather be ALONE, she doesnt want Lucas there and then her face when she sees Nathan riding by, she wants HIM there. If they dont end up together, I swear I never shipping another fictional couple.
Nathan's advances are natural, Elizabeth feels happy. On the other hand Lucas seems to force the issue about Elizabeth should have lunch with him. She feels uncomfortable.
I noticed that the situations were a little different in their emotions. Decorating the tree was a good time and a happy situation. Decorating the school feels like a tense and bad time. Is the bad moment due to Lucas pushing for a lunch together or due to work difficulties? I think the decoration was for the first school day. In this case Elizabeth would be worried but happy. She loves to teach, if the writers haven't changed that feeling too. The bad situation I think concerned the presence and insistence of Lucas. Just another question about the settled letter. It could be that his system of control, (Lucas puts it into action with everything he does), and he does it now automatically with everything that, according to his thought of him, is not in the right place. Does it point to a slightly childish side of his character ( lack of confidence, security )that isn't just about his behavior with Elisabeth?
I don’t think so- I think the opposite: it shows that he is a responsible adult, he finishes what he starts, he doesn’t just hang the letters up and leave them there. But yes- it’s so interesting that they decided to compare these scenes but made Lucas and Elizabeth’s scene so cringy
When I saw this scene with Lucas, I immediately thought of Nathan and Elizabeth decorating the tree, so it's like you read my mind with this comparison--you are so awesome! How many times has Elizabeth used the excuse, "I'm just not myself today"...she's not herself because she is denying her true feelings. You can't force yourself to love someone because they are a safer choice. And, truthfully, even if she were to choose Lucas, he is not going to be happy in the long run knowing deep down inside that she "settled" for him--and he doesn't deserve that. That's why everyone has so much sympathy for him in this scene. It's time for Elizabeth to be honest with herself and Lucas.

There’s definitely a big attraction with Lucas. He does all the right things for Elizabeth, but he’s too formal. Like when Elizabeth put the frosting on Nathan’s.nose. She could never behave like that with Lucas. Lucas is more from her former days in the big city. Nathan is more like she had with Jack. More relaxed behavior! More laugher or fun. Lucas just seem like he would be always taking charge of everything and I think Elizabeth to use to her freedom! She needs a partner not someone who’s going to dictate her life. Lucas gave her manuscript to his mother with out asking her. She was upset. He’s more that way. He’s in charge! He’s in control! Just my thoughts!
The possibility is endless with Nathan now, he doesn't have to be bothered by Elizabeth now she going to find him all in his business, there are other women in Hope Valley to help him, she need to leave him alone.

The letter and I have already written it in the previous comment, and the always formal and polite manner of the boy who almost always keeps it. Do I also wonder in courtship? All according to the rules of the fascinator, the place, the menu, the words, but the facts tell us the same things?I can't get free of the feeling of "little transparency and manipulation" that Lucas keeps making me feel.

It should have been N and E endgame..I will NEVER understand why the network did what they did or JT his wife etc...It could have been epic, instead it was the biggest letdown in TV history.
I just noticed in the clip, Elizabeth said, "I can't Lucas".... of course he was just asking her to lunch and maybe it means nothing... but it stood out to me. I really don't enjoy watching conflicted Elizabeth... and she has admitted she's "not herself." She has one more episode to get it together. GITE... Get It Together Elizabeth! Say what you will about the writers and storyline, but this season has the Hearties fully entrenched. Each word of every character's lines is strategically placed. Each actor has been masterful with verbal and non-verbal cues to create this dilemma. Excruciating, but very exciting! Come on Sunday!
Could you please analyze the scene where Lucas sets Elizabeth free at the end of episode 11? For me that's the most beautiful scene throughout season 8. (Great acting by Chris) Lucas loves E much more than Nathan does. He's unselfish and humble. Can you say that about Nathan' s behaviour? I'm sorry Elizabeth can't see the difference. (not yet at least). But as Lucas said: love can't be demanded or forced. From a certain distance E will be able to choose more easily. One more thing: I find it unrealistic that though E chose L over Nathan ( remember the 'joys and sorrows', 'both public and private' scene), now that she knows about Jack"s death and Nathan's lie, she would have a change of heart...?
Lucas has not said I love you to E nor E said yes I love you too to L or N... in fact " not yet" seems to be her reaction whenever an intimate situation occurs bet her an L.with N she is so guarded but her eyes and actions so far kind of betray her, ..just my observation., cld be wrong..

Lucas is much more similar to Jack than Nathan. In reality both men remind her of her husband because she hasn’t processed her trauma. Without processing, no true choice can be made
I appreciate the play by play analysis of the scene. On point however the difficulty I have when analysis scenes is that way it may lead to a false sense of the situation that cause the actions to happen. As we have seen people have interpret Elizabeth behavior towards Nathan as being in love with him.. I think is important to have an understanding of what may may be provoking the situation. When I look at this analysis is that Elizabeth is attracted to Nathan and she is having second thoughts about Lucas. The play by play is great but I think these 2 scenes are not at an equal level to compare. Nathan and Elizabeth scene was when they were still testing the waters. Christmas time, little Jack's birthday so Elizabeth is at a place she is missing Jack. Like she told Rosemary when they were baking the gingerbread house. The scene with Lucas was when she was confused about how she was feeling about Nathan and Lucas has been noticing her behavior so he was trying to engage her to see where she was at. He knew there was something going on that's why he broke the eye contact he sense something was different. I really enjoy reading your analysis and I hope my comments does not upset you because is not my intention. Not sure if I'm clear enough for you to understand what I'm trying to say. Binging through se7-8 again and it is clear now as a bell, that Elizabeth is so terrified of loving a mountie again - no matter how beautifully she is encouraging Clara or Ned - when there's a small intimate moment happening to her with Nathan, she initiates a move towards Lucas... I know for sure who she really loves.

In season eight, grief is a main topic. Elizabeth has said that she hasn’t been herself. Allie has mentioned that Nathan hasn’t been himself since Fort Clay. They’ve had challenges. Throughout the season, Elizabeth has given Nathan the “cold shoulder.” Lucas has gotten all the dates. She has said no to kissing Lucas. She has had issues with Rosemary. I wonder that now that things are changing, now that she is in good terms with Nathan, this is a sign of her beginning to heal. If she will listen to her heart and finally see clearly what lies ahead for her. Clarity. Clarity to set things right. To give herself a chance to love. To settle or to fight for love. To work things out with her friend Rosemary. To see what she really needs in her life.

So when I watched this I also found it interesting considering time and place, how comfortable and happy Elizabeth is with Nathan giving her a little assistance in NATHAN’s house - not even her own home turf. However she’s uncomfortable in HER classroom with Lucas helping her. It’s almost a territorial issue

Oh another thing I forgot to write in my pinned comment: Elizabeth says “Thank you” to Nathan but not to Lucas. It’s interesting to consider if she really needed or wanted Lucas help here or if he -in her opinion- overstepped a line. In my opinion he’s just being a gentleman. But she did hang up the other stuff all by herself too, right? She might be thinking that it’s unnecessary for him to do this and that’s why we see some annoyance in her face.
And in the scene where Nathan helps her she gives him an obvious sign that she needs help - she giggles and makes this weird little noise that I don’t know what to call. And she thanks him which shows us that she indeed wanted him to help. Thoughts?

Yeah. She made no indication that she needed his help, even though he wanted to give it anyway. It’s interesting that she seemed to be VERY comfortable with that position she was in with Nathan, than in the same position she was with the man she was currently dating. All this time she’s been dating him, we’ve said that Lucas is her security blanket, her safety, where everything is not a what if he’s going to die and leave me… she has been comfortable with him, and kinda agitated when she’s around Nathan at times. Then this scene happens. How the tables have turned, indeed. It’s like she didn’t want to be near him. She inched away from the man she is dating when she has been in many intimate situations with him. I like to think that when she saw Nathan, it’s almost as if she was trying to reach out to him with her mind to come and rescue her from Lucas… but that’s my mind for you…
But yes back to the comparisons. When I saw this scene, all I could think about was that scene when they were decorating the tree and I was hoping you would put up a comparison video.

Another thing… I really do hope that Lucas is not seeing Elizabeth for a woman who can’t take care of herself. She’s not just a widow, she is a strong woman and can take care of herself and Jack. Like you observed, she put everything else up just fine without him, so why did he think that she needed his help when she didn’t even make a sound to suggest otherwise? Yeah that was definitely a look of annoyance. Heck, I was even annoyed…
I’m just thinking at this point she feels guilty for how she has led Lucas on while being torn between the two.

The fact that SHE turned around to lock eyes with Nathan and stayed that CLOSE to him for a minute (with ALLIE right there) and they did the same while searching for the tree but with Lucas, she moves away SO FAST and she is actually "DATING " Him, then "Im not a good company" she is never is a good company with Lucas (she has used that line with him before), it means that she is upset and rather be ALONE, she doesnt want Lucas there and then her face when she sees Nathan riding by, she wants HIM there.
If they dont end up together, I swear I never shipping another fictional couple.
Nathan's advances are natural, Elizabeth feels happy. On the other hand Lucas seems to force the issue about Elizabeth should have lunch with him. She feels uncomfortable.

I noticed that the situations were a little different in their emotions. Decorating the tree was a good time and a happy situation. Decorating the school feels like a tense and bad time. Is the bad moment due to Lucas pushing for a lunch together or due to work difficulties? I think the decoration was for the first school day. In this case Elizabeth would be worried but happy. She loves to teach, if the writers haven't changed that feeling too. The bad situation I think concerned the presence and insistence of Lucas. Just another question about the settled letter. It could be that his system of control, (Lucas puts it into action with everything he does), and he does it now automatically with everything that, according to his thought of him, is not in the right place. Does it point to a slightly childish side of his character ( lack of confidence, security )that isn't just about his behavior with Elisabeth?
I don’t think so- I think the opposite: it shows that he is a responsible adult, he finishes what he starts, he doesn’t just hang the letters up and leave them there.
But yes- it’s so interesting that they decided to compare these scenes but made Lucas and Elizabeth’s scene so cringy

When I saw this scene with Lucas, I immediately thought of Nathan and Elizabeth decorating the tree, so it's like you read my mind with this comparison--you are so awesome! How many times has Elizabeth used the excuse, "I'm just not myself today"...she's not herself because she is denying her true feelings. You can't force yourself to love someone because they are a safer choice. And, truthfully, even if she were to choose Lucas, he is not going to be happy in the long run knowing deep down inside that she "settled" for him--and he doesn't deserve that. That's why everyone has so much sympathy for him in this scene. It's time for Elizabeth to be honest with herself and Lucas.

There’s definitely a big attraction with Lucas. He does all the right things for Elizabeth, but he’s too formal. Like when Elizabeth put the frosting on Nathan’s.nose. She could never behave like that with Lucas. Lucas is more from her former days in the big city. Nathan is more like she had with Jack. More relaxed behavior! More laugher or fun. Lucas just seem like he would be always taking charge of everything and I think Elizabeth to use to her freedom! She needs a partner not someone who’s going to dictate her life. Lucas gave her manuscript to his mother with out asking her. She was upset. He’s more that way. He’s in charge! He’s in control! Just my thoughts!

I just noticed in the clip, Elizabeth said, "I can't Lucas".... of course he was just asking her to lunch and maybe it means nothing... but it stood out to me. I really don't enjoy watching conflicted Elizabeth... and she has admitted she's "not herself." She has one more episode to get it together.

Each actor has been masterful with verbal and non-verbal cues to create this dilemma. Excruciating, but very exciting! Come on Sunday!

Could you please analyze the scene where Lucas sets Elizabeth free at the end of episode 11? For me that's the most beautiful scene throughout season 8. (Great acting by Chris) Lucas loves E much more than Nathan does. He's unselfish and humble. Can you say that about Nathan' s behaviour? I'm sorry Elizabeth can't see the difference. (not yet at least). But as Lucas said: love can't be demanded or forced. From a certain distance E will be able to choose more easily. One more thing: I find it unrealistic that though E chose L over Nathan ( remember the 'joys and sorrows', 'both public and private' scene), now that she knows about Jack"s death and Nathan's lie, she would have a change of heart...?
Lucas has not said I love you to E nor E said yes I love you too to L or N... in fact " not yet" seems to be her reaction whenever an intimate situation occurs bet her an L.with N she is so guarded but her eyes and actions so far kind of betray her, ..just my observation., cld be wrong..

I appreciate the play by play analysis of the scene. On point however the difficulty I have when analysis scenes is that way it may lead to a false sense of the situation that cause the actions to happen. As we have seen people have interpret Elizabeth behavior towards Nathan as being in love with him.. I think is important to have an understanding of what may may be provoking the situation. When I look at this analysis is that Elizabeth is attracted to Nathan and she is having second thoughts about Lucas. The play by play is great but I think these 2 scenes are not at an equal level to compare. Nathan and Elizabeth scene was when they were still testing the waters. Christmas time, little Jack's birthday so Elizabeth is at a place she is missing Jack. Like she told Rosemary when they were baking the gingerbread house. The scene with Lucas was when she was confused about how she was feeling about Nathan and Lucas has been noticing her behavior so he was trying to engage her to see where she was at. He knew there was something going on that's why he broke the eye contact he sense something was different. I really enjoy reading your analysis and I hope my comments does not upset you because is not my intention. Not sure if I'm clear enough for you to understand what I'm trying to say. But is always nice to read scenes analysis.
