    Actually, if you're using an older FF car, you might actually managed to pull it off. On sharp turns, try to yank the handbrake to lock the rear wheel to achieve a smaller turning radius to compensate the restrictions on your hand. A quick acceleration may recover the car from a slide. The Lancer might not perform the same way due to a wee bit longer wheelbase and weighs more than say, an EG. If you drive slower, like on the video, the car might not gonna have the perfect momentum to perform what I said. Try to do it on a open space and mock up a track. Just my two cents. Oh, btw, I just clicked subscribed.

      I bough it for 400us for cheap cars racing. It was stock with 1.6l 4g92 70kw, disc brakes ande damaged every panel on car. I just fixed some problems and swaped in 1.6l 4g92 84kw from Lancer and put on some sticky tires (used slicks or Nankang NS-2R). Lot of body roll but fast and lot of fun. I was using it last 3 years for racing and as a daily car. I really like that car but competion become stronger, so now i got in garage BMW E36 Compact for racing.
      BTW my toy car is Nissan 200SX (180SX) S13 with CA18DET. Now i ame fixing some rust issue and i am putting on front and rear axle from Nissan Skyline R33 GTS.

      +Ridge Chaser Wait, hang on! I think I found a car you can use for the gutter run, its not a specific brand or model, but look for cars with open underbodys, like the AE86, [ when doing the gutter run ] If you try the gutter run with that lancer, you will scrape the bottom when dropping the tires, can come to a halt, but cars with open underbody allow a little more wiggle room for when you make a mistake. Also, when doing the "Blind Attack" you WILL need a car in FRONT to see where you're going, if you do it by yourself or with a car BEHIND you, you wont be able to see anything, believe me.

  • @MrPomomies

    First of all, you had your hand on wrong place, Should have been in between of 10 and 11 if we use a clock face to point the correct location.
    Secondly you had fairly new Mitsubushi Lancer (EVO?) and you were driving very slowly. with absolutely no slide on the rear end. You would need to "drift it" or as in initial D Initiate the turning with handbrake (As Shingo did it) and use the FWD pull to keep your car in line.
    For FWD it is quite possible
    For RWD it is possible for extremely skilled driver
    For AWD it is just about inpossible on tarmac, but on gravel and/or snow it's quite possible due reduced grip.

    • @xSS4x
      @xSS4x 8 лет назад +8

      Although in Initial D they taped the hand at the 3 position so 9 on left wheel drive is a correct imitation but i understand you would get a more equal turning radius of the steering wheel on both side the way you suggest.
      The rest is pretty accurate, without drifting, which requires more speed in high grip scenario, its impossible to do so.
      And skill/experience/understanding are huge factor in pulling it off like in the show.

    so many things wrong with this test making it pointless. Different cars have different steering ratios...whether you have a big old steering wheel or a small aftermarket wheel, FR, FF, AWD....all these things are big factors into whether or not you could drive with your hand tapped to the wheel and thus limiting your turning input. FR would let you clutch kick...FF you could hand brake...not sure if AWD would be easier or harder. Basically, you could setup a car to make the job easier (basically what the driver of the EG did by picking that car) All that youtube bitching aside...I wouldn't want to attempt it in any car. Regular "quick" driving is one thing, but having your steering angle limited will get you into trouble when the car starts to lose control.

    Here’s my take; You are gripping, Shingo was using weight transfer and handbrake to swing the rear end of his EG6 to break traction and then mashing the throttle to ease out of the skid, and aim towards the corner exit. You are going about this very cautiously, if you don’t commit, it’ll be more disastrous than if you fully committed and failed. I don’t blame you tho lmao, you’re actually a mad lad for trying this in real life ON A REAL-ASS ROAD. Kudos.

  • @overcl0ck
    @overcl0ck 6 лет назад +1

    I think it all depends on the type of car, with any FWD light-weight euro hatches from the 90s (Clio Williams, Saxo VTS...) you can pull it off swinging the rear axle with the right combination of lift-off, scandi flick, left-foot braking and even hand braking at the apex. It's all about keeping the momentum, which is kinda what Shingo does with the EG6. I see a lot of people turning the steering wheel a lot in tight bends but you don't really need to if you can make the rear wheels slide and unlike drifting with a RWD you don't need as much counter-steer, just mash the gas again and voilà!

    In the anime, the reason why FF cars have the advantage over FR cars in this scenario is because the duct tape death match is about winning the race just as much as surviving. FF cars have the advantage in terms of weight transfer. With the engine in the front, using left-foot braking to take the weight off the rear wheels, decreasing understeer and having quicker response back on the throttle opposed to using your right foot to brake and use the throttle. LEFT FOOT BRAKING was the main factor that emphasis was put upon, not necessarily hand brake turns due to the loss of speed coming out of a handbrake turn, and the amount of weight transfer required. Cars with softer suspension will handle better, because the weight transfers from side to side easier.

  • @jeffmaine8759
    @jeffmaine8759 2 года назад +2

    6:21 "Understeer is the last thing we need in this situation"
    Ironically, in Initial D takumi's entire technique requires on understeer + weight shift. By using the brakes to slide the front tires and put the load on the front tires he is able to slide all 4 tires, perfectly balancing the car during a slide and allowing him to use full throttle. By doing this minimally he is able to also counter steer at a minimal angle, allocating for him to do this while his hand is ducttaped to the wheel. Shingo was able to just because he drove an FF, which naturally understeered during a slide.
    And yes this is all real, Keiichi Tsuchiya has been doing this since the 90s. Its a form of slip angle.

    I don't want to sound like a hater. In fact I think that it requires a lot of skills to try this technique... And big balls to try this! However, You couldn't steer properly to the left because your hand was not attached in the correct position; For that reason you didn't struggle much to steer to the right. In order to let the wheels turn on the same ratio on each side you have to put your hand on a "middle" point. this means that the correct position is between 10 and 11. Not on 9 as you tried
    On the other hand I want to tell you that this was already made by someone else. This technique requires a lot of training, and the basics to master it is not by mastering the steering control but the mass transfer control, and also the throttle control. And in your case, that I guess your Lancer is a FWD (as it is not an EVO) you can dominate this by using left-foot-braking...
    I'm going to give you a link of a video of someone who tried this technique successfully... Perhaps if you are a follower of Initial D, you might know how Keiichi Tsuchiya is... ruclips.net/video/zD4Ei4jOa0k/видео.html
    ... It is cool to see that someone try to do these challenges! Please keep posting!

      Yes, you guys are right - the handbrake would have certainly helped out (I mention this at the end). I'm not well-trained in that technique, but I might revisit this experiment in the far future with a different car. Under normal circumstances, sliding the car on this particular road may result in an abysmal corner exit speed. So I'd have to choose a downhill course in order to maintain momentum. Thanks for the input!

    I came back because I had a thought about the front wheel drive vs rear wheel drive... I think that rear wheel would actually be at a disadvantage... at a lower speed rear wheel actually wants to understeer more then front wheel so long as you have good throttle control, but most importantly if you begin to oversteer you will likely be unable to countersteer if it the back kicks out to far. also with the practiced use of a handbrake in front wheel drive you may be able to aggressively steer into a corner with little need to counter if any. really though I think no matter what setup it is all about throttle control and corner entry. so pretty much the same conclusion you came to I guess just a different opinion on fwd vs rwd

    • @RidgeChaser
      @RidgeChaser  8 лет назад

      Throttle control is a huge part of how the car rotates! Dive and squat is something I didn't mention either, and how the car handles the change in tire load as the driver brakes hard.

    Power steering is the key... And the hand placement. Takumi's AE86 had a power steering because it's a GT-Apex. Those models have power steering, optional power windows, etc. GT-V on the other hand, is the light, sporty version that Tsuchiya uses. No power steering, no power windows, lighter body. That's why Tsuchiya stuggled at first

  • @awakenedsoul2638
    @awakenedsoul2638 3 года назад +2

    One of the meaning of Anime is UNREALISTIC! They put things that will never happen in real life in any cartoon/anime. Writers and cartoonist put impossible things that will never happen in real life to make the show look good.
    Things in Initial D that are real are the explanation of FR, FF, MR and 4WD characteristics of vehicles. Up hill and down hill 4WD and MR are balanced. FR is good in downhill but weak in uphill while FF is good in uphill and weak in downhill, correct my words if I am wrong. The kind of drift techniques are also real. Every cars they used are all real, all are Japanese cars except one European Sedan Car Mercedes-Benz that Natsuki Mogi rides in with his PAPA who only fucks her and gives her money. The explanations of the settings of their cars are real. And the engines they showed their are the real engines and engine sounds of the real life cars. The touge places are also real.
    Things that are not real is this one the duct tape deathmatch. Like you watched in the video, he can only drive the car with his left hand taped on the wheel at a slow speed. Did you noticed he never attempted to drive the car faster and drift? BECAUSE IN REAL LIFE YOU CAN NEVER DRIVE AT HIGH SPEEDS LIKE THIS. Maybe if you will just go drag racing. If you go drag racing just your eyes with a handkerchief, hehehehehe ha ha ha ha ha I am only joking.
    The usual thing you see but is not really always true is the Sprinter Trueno, a significantly slower car defeating cars faster than it. Defeating cars within its class is possible but defeating cars faster than it is not possible in real life even if you are Keichi Tsuchiya. TRUST ME YOU FOOLS! Read above the definition of Anime. If you car is in a lower class than the faster car in a higher class or super car class your slower car that is under powered will never defeat it. Your Sprinter Trueno, you can settings it and modify it the same can be done to the faster car. Even Keichi Tsuchiya knows this. Watch him race with his AE86 in hot version against cars that are more than 2 liters engine, Keichi said, you are bullies this is just 1.6 and cars you use are 2 liters or more. My car cannot keep up when it comes to speed. THAT IS COMING FROM THE DRIFT KING the one who invented drifting, made it popular and became a long time trend in car culture. Every car has its limits that there will be a time your skills will not be enough to win driving a slow car and racing against faster cars having also skilled drivers. You did noticed Takumi only lost by having his engine blown when he got carried away with his emotions racing that black Lancer Evolution III. There are some races where HE SHOULD HAVE LOST! Again read the meaning of anime above before you argue. Do you think Takumi should have never lost legally and fair and square? Of course he should have lost a few times in the cartoon. His slowpoke Trueno always defeats cars faster than it, in real life it will never happen. It can only happen if you modify the engine and make the proper settings.
    Do you think you can drive that fast in road or places where you have never been at? Watch Takumi when he left Akina to race against other races at other prefecture regions in Japan. He raced some without even memorizing the road. Running a few runs to memorize the road is not enough. Real life racers practice many laps on the circuit practicing their driving skills and helping the mechanic telling what kind of settings is right for the car until the day of race comes. This is how to practice before you race. Take a look at Mako vs Takumi, Sileighty vs Sprinter Trueno. He went to Usui pass driving hellishly fast without memorizing the road. You cannot do that in real life. THAT IS ABSOLUTE DEATH! Know the road, the entire place and memorize it before you drive fast. Even if you are used to different angles and shape of turns every turn of the road is different. You memorize it until in its smallest details.
    The Sprinter Trueno always defeats the faster cars on a different race course without changing its settings. I am not saying that Takumi never changes the settings of his car. Yes he never did but it was his Papa Bunta who does the mechanical work. But are a few races where he never changed the settings of his car specially when he went to other places to race. In real life if you do not change the settings of your car depending on the circuit and road condition you are at a disadvantage. THIS IS ANIME SO THE AUTHOR WILL MAKE TAKUMI WIN!
    In 5th and Final Stage, did you see the Trueno making a turn like it is teleporting? You know it is not real, it will never happen in real life. I disliked it quickly when the animators represented .7 seconds faster on a turn making the car looked like it is teleporting. THAT IS ANIME FOR YOU!
    I am sure ya'll mature people knows what is reality and what is unrealistic is. Fanboys do not have to cry, argue or get upset.
    Drive safely, always think your safety first before anything else when driving on the road and be defensive driver, use your brain first to analyze the situation and do not let your emotions come at you first.

  • @JackisaMannequin
    @JackisaMannequin 8 лет назад

    The gumtape deathmatch idea is basically suicide, so shouldn't ever be attempted in real by anyone, but it is theoretically entirely possible.
    The FR layout is probably the most suited for it, since (with an insane amount of mastery) the steering inputs could be incredibly small. The point of the GTDM in the anime was to teach Takumi how to tone down his oversteer, since higher angle results in lower speeds. By inititating the drift with a primarily braking (NOT handbrake) based entry and using as little throttle as possible, you can maintain a near zero counter steer turn, and use the throttle and differential to control the angle of the car around a turn. Zero counter steer turning is the pinacle of touge style driving, and generally any driving where air-effects and racing tires are absent; it offers the highest possible speed through the turn by using the acceleration force of the tires to fight the centifugal force of the car's inirtia.

    • @RidgeChaser
      @RidgeChaser  8 лет назад

      Very true, minimizing steering input is an important skill to have. I'd still be down to try this in an FR car, since the FF cars rely heavily on the handbrake to navigate the low-speed hairpins.

Since the road to my house has a shit load of hard curves, the one thing I'm missing are the hair pins. other than that it's actually doable I do recommend practicing with free hands so you can save yourself if you fuck up though. But basically it's about your speed, your breaking and most importantly your track. The track has to absolutely be one that you know like the back of your hand. Also start slow don't try to be some badass from the start.

    Left foot braking is essential to this exercise. I didn't hear any tire squealing so you never broke traction or drifted hence you under steered the entire time. Sure you can use the handbrake but LFB is how it's done correctly. By transferring weight to the front of the car with LFB you get more traction for the front wheels. Totally reckless to run on an open road and try this sort of stuff when you don't understand the lesson being taught in that episode, which was weight transfer to get more grip for steering and less grip in the rear for car rotation.

    • @RidgeChaser
      @RidgeChaser  8 лет назад

      While left-foot braking is essential in front wheel drive applications, the load transfer through LFB or trail braking (which I did use) would not be enough to counteract the all the understeer in those short radius corners. There is a good improvement when rotating for corner entry, but the steering ratio still causes issues during midcorner/exit phase. LFB would be incredible if we set up the proper brake pressure bias, but we're working with an economy car here.
      Also, the lack of tire squealing noise is my fault - but it was an oversight in editing. I didn't properly equalize the sound, so the rumbling noise at

    • @opforind
      @opforind 8 лет назад +1

      I have a Mk2 GTI with a welded diff. It wants to under steer into corners and torque steer on acceleration. I have a brake bias valve plumbed in before the hydraulic handbrake cylinder. I couldn't tell you what the front/rear percentage is but it locks up the rears and allows me to rotate the car with LFB.
      I'm primarily into Rally but looking to try some drifting and road racing eventually.
      I hope I didn't/don't come off as too pedantic but I love the Initial D series and talking cars with like minded individuals. I definitely understand the limitations of filming and getting good audio.

    It depends on the road too, as well as the flexibility of one's wrists and the diameter of the wheel. I didn't actually tape my left hand to my steering wheel, but I did try a few turns on NC 151 without removing my left hand from the wheel at all in a Lexus RX330. The large diameter wheel made it a bit sketchy, but I was able to make it around the turns without too much trouble.
    I'll run some tests on a sim next time I get a chance.

  • @Aminmotors

    The reason FWD is better for duct tape death match is because if you use oversteer techniques such as pulling the handbrake, left foot braking, etc, the car does not require much countersteer to recover because you can use the throttle to cancel the slide. Shingo uses FWD drift in his EG6. This would not be possible in a serious grip run, as you discovered.

    the reason why you are having trouble turning is because you taped your hand in the wrong wheel position. you tape your hand at the 10:30 o clock position if the driver seat is on the left side, and 1:30 o clock if the driver seat is on the right. taping your hand in the right position should give you a better turning circle when you attempt this.

In the show Takumi learns essentially the same thing. 10-15 degrees is usually the most you want to turn a wheel. obviously a lot of turns are going to make that impossible. Hi i dont know if anyone else said this before i do, but i'm lazy to read all comments. Attention, this comments are from MY point of view and are merely an opinion. I love the anime but i dont know much about cars so... Also the anime is just that, animated cartoons and they're fantasy, get over it :P
    First of all: isn't the lancer a 4WD? to clear those corners at higher speeds i think you need to powerslide. the civic is an FF and he gets off balance by counter steering plus applying handbrake to create oversteer (i think)
    Second, i may tape my hand a little bit higher, like at 45° angle to the steering wheel, that gives you more or less the same movility to both sides and let your right hand able to focus on shifting
    I understand the risk of going faster in those conditions and wouldnt recomend anyone to try it ever, even less on a road that narrow at night. So don't do it and let us keep enjoying the cartoon's fantasy, thanks.

    Did you learn anything from this experience? It seems like you made all of the turns for the most part (albeit not on the best lines) using minimal steering angle. Can you translate this to better racing technique? Also, at the end you mention trying "God Hand's" technique, wouldn't essentially be the same idea, one hand never leaving the steering wheel ?

    • @RidgeChaser
      @RidgeChaser  7 лет назад +1

      The grip I use for normal racing meant that I have very little steering angle to work with. I would have more options if I positioned my hands at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions.
      This experiment didn't really emphasize practical techniques but in a RWD car, the driver would rely on throttle application rather than steering. Sorry if I'm saying stuff that's too obvious.
      The God Hand technique would be somewhat similar, but I'll have more freedom on my left hand (the duct tape restricted me from any twisting motion for example). But as a drawback, my right hand would be restricted to staying on the gear shifter.

    If you don't know weight shifting definitely don't do this but did you know any kind of car can pull this off without sliding one's tire? The trick is to shift the weight to the front and prevent understeer and get the true steering you need for every corner. It's not trying to go dare devil on the mountain which some of you misunderstood and that's the reason takumi , ryosuke, god arm, shingo, bunta[especially bunta cuz the other three is limited counter steer while bunta is zero counter steer.] even I was able to pull it off . Some people have really really ''stretchy and bendy'' hands that they can easily do this.
    My hand bends more than normal.
    Going over a 360 turn both ways so for me, this woudent cause much problem.
    If I taped my hand to 10 or 9, I'd be able to just and just turn the wheel completely around.
