Maybe if you let it gently slide on its own without violently vounteringnand its all level like some airfield, yes. On a public mountain road? Hell no. As for just driving well its possible to be smooth, but again other factors will screw you over. Anime had it exagerated and ignored all possible issues.

The anime doesn't really account for road imperfections (bumps, pot holes, etc.) although they do show the car bouncing a bit on the road. Anyone can be smooth but it doesn't matter much if the road isn't. Then again, Japan's mountain roads are probably better maintained than those in the States since some of those are main roadways and not side roads. But great test nonetheless. A great excuse to open it up on a winding road.

Totally doable. I do it from time to time in left hand corners. Since I drive a family car designed 45 years ago, seats have zero side bolstering. In right hand corners, i put my left knee against the door and use both hands to steer. In the left hand corners, I push my elbow against the passinger seat and steer only with my left hand. Now, I do this only when I'm coming in hot into the low speed left hand corners (I have about 4 turns lock to lock and the steering lock aint that great) since it is hard to hold onto the wheel when you have to turn it a lot. I have menaged to correct low speed slides nicely while doing this but I'm not too shoure about high speed corners.

Whenever we see Takumi delivering tofu, I never recall him driving the tofu uphill. There might be a chance that he lives above where he has to deliver the tofu, and so he never drives uphill with the tofu. When he travels downhill, the water will be taken by gravity towards the front of the car. Hitting the gas will make the water try to travel towards the rear of car, effectively cancelling it out. That would play a huge factor in the experiment. Love the video by the way!
Thanks for the support! In the anime, Takumi says that he only delivers the tofu uphill. I almost missed this detail since it's a very short clip and they don't really mention it afterwards. Your concept is still correct when applied to the opposite direction - the braking would cancel out the water's offset caused by the uphill angle.
I think what people forget is that Takumi was never full on racing up the hill, and certainly was not drifting it with the tofu. What he was doing was careful driving uphill to not spill and thus learned how to drive smoothly. As we say in Poland, "practice makes the master". You need to train some with the cup. Takumi told Iketani and Itsuki, that he also spilled water in first months of deliveries. It took him some time to learn how to not spill the water. I drive with the cup filled in 3/4 for last 2 weeks. I don't drive so fast and crazy as Takumi (after all, you too), but much more over limits. Roads I drive are really holey and "wavy", but I don't spill. It took me a few days to get the hang of it, however. The worst places are very low speed (under 40km/h) sections with cobblestone or old, disintegrated asphalt. And taking too fast exit from roundabouts. The key is fluent seamless shifting (I'm not perfect at this, but practice, practice...) and fluid corners entries.
I agree and I'd really like to the video showing how you did it. I have lots of people telling me it's possible on these surface conditions but nobody has proven it yet
May be quite difficult. I was thinking about it before I commented your video and I'd like to have at least 3 cameras - on dash/gauges/road, pedals and the cup. But if some simple video recorded from passenger seat will make you contented, I can try to make it in few days ;) Edit: Tell me one thing - what are specs of your Lancer and what speed did you reach on this video? It may be not really comparable - I have Suzuki Baleno 1.3 hatchback, 85hp fwd. It's quite old and have worn suspension, so I can't really go very fast (above 120km/h) on damaged surface. I just think, that the essence is to push personal and the exact car's limits without spilling the water. Yeah, i'm actually planning to release those two videos plus some more. I have the heel toe video filmed but I'm planning to reshoot for better production value. Glad you like the video!
Takumi initially started with less water, since in that part of the video, his father intentionally raised the contents. so he had more practice with it.
The whole thing about the water cup is being able to drive fast while being gentle on the throttle and brake pedal and minimizing lateral force while turning. Sometimes I do it with my takeaway coffee just for fun, start slow then gradually ramp up the speed and see how long I can hold the brew in the cup. I guess if somebody did this for years as Takumi did in the series he would eventually get very good at it.
Braking force is easily the most important part in this experiment. Of course there's gonna be a lot of time lost trying to keep the water intact so it's inappropriate for actual battles 👌
I knew it. It's no doubt and is very noticeable. In the anime series, thy used "thick water". It's something people use if they are suffering to swallow something.
One of the most difficult challenges was chasing the Impreza in Touge Battle 8. Of course, there's been impossible situations, such as trying to keep up with 250+ HP cars on uphill high-speed roads but even that's not as mentally straining. As for modded cars, it depends on what you define a 'mod' as. Techically there's a shitload of those out there. And for the state, it's clearly Sonora, Mexico
the thing is, takumi spilled it several times, as he said. i realize it is just an anime, and anything that is done in it really should just be taken as a grain of salt, but it probably is possible to not spill the water, but like everything, it takes practice. If you want to you should try to do that every once in a while. one of my friends started it, and he quit spilling it after a while, its pretty cool
It's very possible to not spill - it worked out in our downhill trial run with a different car. The issue is when the suspension geometry isn't compatible with the road - it made the water spill even when I was going in a straight line
2:56 I think Bunta modified the suspension, but I don't think he lowered it much. Maybe it was because the Trueno is a FR and not a FF like this lancer?
It is very similar to an accelerometer, but it's supposed to also act as an indicator of smoothness and in addition to that, Takumi wasn't necessarily driving at full speed on his tofu runs as many are led to believe, but instead is quite reserved, trying to better his skills driving the 86. If this were to be used on his actual races, of course the water would spill, but since this is only used on tofu runs, speed isn't a focus for the pure fact of making the delivery time, but instead smoothness for not breaking the tofu. It's hard to explain but I can say that yes, this is possible, but no, it isn't easy. It isn't something you should focus on driving fast with, but instead on the inputs while driving.
Everybody gets this wrong, Takumi does’nt go all out to the hotel. He drives a decent pace but never hard, the water cup is needed so he keeps himself composed and smooth, after he delivers the tofu he can get rid of the water and go all out on the downhil (remember, they call him the downhil specialist), after years of training he is starting to get the idea of becoming faster by practicing the two techniques, smooth and full out...
You forgot to make sure that when you take corners, the cup is like a pole, so your car have to drift through the corners while feeling for the balance of the car weight. Bunta would say you can't learn his 5 years technique in one day. :) by the way, thumbs up for trying. Just make it your daily habit of having the cup of water, soon you'll achieve it.
ya, road conditions are a big factor, but in the anime Takumi even said it was hard at first so practice would help. And he did explain to roll the water in the cup so.the surface tension doesn't change to drastically at one time.
Yeah, I think if the internal pressure of the water is high enough at the lip of the cup, the driver will be able to add a little bit more force without it going overboard. It's such a precise act that it would only be possible with practice, and familiarity with the road and car (which Takumi has plenty of)
The reason you spil is because takumi is drifting and you are doing grip while drifting you can make the car stable while cornering mean while if you are doing grip race while you are cornering the car will lean to the other side and the water will spill.
The water won't spill by using inertial drift, with inertial drift the shift of G force is much more smoother and with some practice you could actually drift with minimum shift of G force (from the center point of gravity) Second, he adjusted his suspension with bumpy public roads in mind so it's much smoother. It is doable but it requires time to master and the right amount modifications
I once opened a can of Arizona tea and placed it on the passenger side floor before forgetting about it. I drove home about 30 minutes through a good 8 minutes of winding roads. I looked at the floor again in amazement that I had left the Arizona tea can there and then again when I realized I hadn't spilled a drop. No one was with me and no one cared until maybe now?
fujiwaras car was designed to be smooth during runs ,I imagine now the ideal situation would be no vibration from the car and non from the road to the car kind of like ice, the water would help on drifts as turning the front end as well as the back leaves the center as a pivot point meaning all the force is put on the 2 ends of the car, it would make sense if he was given the water to turn quicker cause as we know the straights are easy and turning is where we lose time, and focusing on shifting the car during a turn to get a more efficient on a turn makes sense but when u turn, the cars front wheels counter steer putting a diagonal force on the cup through momentum, but if the car tier's were smooth enough then maybe just ,maybe the possibility exists
This creates the fluctuation in water stability. Shifting patterns to stay in higher rpm ranges of 3k up 1st 2nd 4th Back to 2nd while clutch held delayed by a second of to can get your rpms stable for the transition without using your clutch as well.
I just commented on the gumtape vid, and i came to bring my opinion on this one. as you said it depends much on the car and road conditions, on the show the AE86 was especifically tuned for akina road. Also, they said that at fist our hero Takumi spilled the water and did a mess with the tofu, so, dont expect to accomplish that on the first try... that, and i think that it IS actually impossible to do in real life, cheers.
I think it would be cool to see this again on 9, as well as varying speeds. It said in the anime that he had to start slow, so i wonder if its possible at all
+beeeraddd I tested it at a slower pace on a road with the same smoothness as 9, and it can be done without spilling. It doesn't make such interesting foorage though
I drive with a cup half full everyday, it's really not as bad as everyone in here seems to think. I do drive fwd but it is about controlling the center of balance of the car, obviously I have spilled and I'm sure it isn't the last time but the amount really isn't that much, overall I really only notice spillage when "driving this old bird as hard as I can" or road imperfections + cornering, the two on their own can be accounted for but in combination there really isn't much you can do besides find a different line or go slower
Couple things to keep in mind. One: roll the water in the cup. Two: Eurobeat No, in all seriousness, it could just be how the car was set up for delivering tofu. Suspension, how fast your going, the weight of the car shifting (just assuming your Lancer is heavier than Takumi's 86), hell, even the road and tire pressure. Can't say I know much about cars, but for all we know, this is possible. Probably tested by Tsuchiya himself
We'll see on the future if its possible tbh if i have the money and time i'll probobly test the theory if im old enough to drive and can afford an car that im planning to buy (not the AE btw thats too expensive
@@edge9323 An AE would be nice, though. Not the nicest looking car, but if it's for the show and this test? It oughta be fun. Every little thing could effect Bunta's training, and he's tuned and modded that car to such a degree it's probably perfect for Mount Akina. I just wanna know if it really is possible to drive so smooth someone won't get car sick. Wait, she was in the car with Itesuke driving!
Well takumi did have 5 years experience to, so that is also how he did not spill but at first it did spill so at the end you might've been a Mitsubishi driving non water spilling master
+Ridge Chaser yea I feel it. I want to do the water cup challenge on my road. already did the tape challenge. that was fun lol. please post vid of winter time
I have been using the water cup technique since I was 15 to drive period add that to being 37 now and also using it while performance high speed drift drag . Car or truck does not matter I did a 90 degree instant turn drift In my f150 over 2 traffic lanes... missed my turn so had to get real . Wish I had video yall
In my opinion if you have pedal control and you remove you foot from the gas and step the breaks very slowly you might drip very little water or NOT spill any
First what you do is doing a time attack you just rushing like someone chasing you,the water cup challenge is suppose to drive through the mountains as smooth as you could and try not to do oversteer turn like what you do in the video, but drifting is the most efficient way to not spill the water,if you don't know to drift, try to brake softly and turn gently before you enter a corner and that's how you deliver a perfect tofu.
lol can you maybe try doin 1 run everyday 4 six months (at least) starting with a half a cup then gradually increasing water level whenever u see improvements because what you've just shown is exactly what tak said happened to him the first time he tried it and it took him 6 months to do the tofu drift and about the water level, (never read the manga)but i believe that he starts there gradually increasing over the 4-5 years of deliveries he does before the 1st episode in which he incidentally tells his father the water in the cup gets higher every time, nice try tho. And if u read the manga does bunta tell him to drive with the cup back down akina because u never see him grab the container that holds the tofu out of the car in the anime but he does in the live movie which makes me think he only really tofu drifts uphill in the anime which would change the way 2 look at the challenge if not no worries i only just thought about it now. would be an interesting factor tho
I did consider that! It might be more difficult in the Lancer because of the height difference. I'll doing the gutter drop (more like a ditch) but I'll need to obtain the right car for it
Oh for your lancer if you don't have a short throw I'd recommend a hurst (mid) short throw. Customer came into my dealership with one it felt really nice on the lancer
Aha yeah I did have the chance to try the hurst shifter on the foxbody Mustang, those things are amazing. I'll convince the Lancer owner to invest in one
Hehe. Laughed in this one. As i was saying bumps and a sweet smooth suspension are critical things in this challenge. Also you could do slower/smoother shifts and more delayed/durational braking/accelerating to eliminate the sudden forces. Having the cup in that low center of gravity helped you a lot! ;) Have fun, see you on the next challenge!
You definitely did this challenge better than I did - especially with that water cup position. I was debating whether I should focus more on keeping the cup in the water, or if I should attempt a quick run and see what happens. If I get to drive an AE86 or AE88 I'll probably try again. Thanks for stopping by!
+Ridge Chaser Just going as fast possible won't work, especially with bumps. As long as you havr fun it's fine though! Always enjoying watching your vids. I'll try to do the challenge as well in my friend's AE on road to see how it feels. Should be lots more challenging!

What's your hardest race? Have you raced against or in any modded cars? And what state are you located in?
One of the most difficult challenges was chasing the Impreza in Touge Battle 8. Of course, there's been impossible situations, such as trying to keep up with 250+ HP cars on uphill high-speed roads but even that's not as mentally straining.
As for modded cars, it depends on what you define a 'mod' as. Techically there's a shitload of those out there. And for the state, it's clearly Sonora, Mexico
Sonora is huge, which place?
"I can't hate a man like that"
you have to have driving skills like takumi... let's face it, no one does. not even keichi tsuchiya could do this, and he's the best.
ruclips.net/video/TES6rseZbBA/видео.html this guy did it
the thing is, takumi spilled it several times, as he said. i realize it is just an anime, and anything that is done in it really should just be taken as a grain of salt, but it probably is possible to not spill the water, but like everything, it takes practice.
I'll take your word for it - I know a lot less about Initial D canon as I should haha
Ridge Chaser
It's just a maybe, don't quote me on it. Anyways, you made a great video as always man! Keep it up!
***** that and every other race. The only situation that takumi was racing with a cup of water was against bunta when he brought out the sti.
Keysuke Takahashi: Bruh, Mitsubishi..
I don't know if you really see the anime beacause Takumi said that after many many months of training he could be able to not spill the water
But takumi already said that if he try to slow down the water will spill but if he drifts the water rides on the cup
The reason it did not work is because the cup has to be made of PAPER
That's because his AE86 is fueled by magic.
You forgot to make sure that when you take corners, the cup is like a pole, so your car have to drift through the corners while feeling for the balance of the car weight. Bunta would say you can't learn his 5 years technique in one day. :) by the way, thumbs up for trying. Just make it your daily habit of having the cup of water, soon you'll achieve it.
spilling water aside, bros actually a really good driver tho ngl
ya, road conditions are a big factor, but in the anime Takumi even said it was hard at first so practice would help. And he did explain to roll the water in the cup so.the surface tension doesn't change to drastically at one time.
Yeah, I think if the internal pressure of the water is high enough at the lip of the cup, the driver will be able to add a little bit more force without it going overboard. It's such a precise act that it would only be possible with practice, and familiarity with the road and car (which Takumi has plenty of)
Maybe it's about suspension. Bunta was saying that he's done cars suspension settings for his tofu deliveries
Needs more Eurobeat "Front tire fire" "Flaming driver" "Rainbows"
If it's fried bean curd, it's hard, so if it's soft ordinary tofu, it's rather more realistic.
The reason you spil is because takumi is drifting and you are doing grip while drifting you can make the car stable while cornering mean while if you are doing grip race while you are cornering the car will lean to the other side and the water will spill.
The suspension was heavily tuned from bunta also
loved the video hope to see more uploads soon
That will most certainly be happening
Atsushi tanigutchi did this with a friend of his and his friend was able to spill a bit of water so it proves it is possible over time.
Bro everyone keeps forgetting that it's implied takumi started with a small cup, then bunta started slowly filling it.
The water won't spill by using inertial drift, with inertial drift the shift of G force is much more smoother and with some practice you could actually drift with minimum shift of G force (from the center point of gravity)
Second, he adjusted his suspension with bumpy public roads in mind so it's much smoother.
It is doable but it requires time to master and the right amount modifications
What I mean by modded cars is like, engine swaps, turbos, coilovers, aero, things like that
I once opened a can of Arizona tea and placed it on the passenger side floor before forgetting about it.
Also remember that you need to play Euro beat music playing while you are driving for maximum smoothness.
I am watching this video because I wonder how many g force it takes to spill the water.
And takumi has experience from filling it up halfway
this video confirms that your road is bad and the way you drive >< hahahaha
Couple things to keep in mind. One: roll the water in the cup. Two: Eurobeat
No, in all seriousness, it could just be how the car was set up for delivering tofu. Suspension, how fast your going, the weight of the car shifting (just assuming your Lancer is heavier than Takumi's 86), hell, even the road and tire pressure. Can't say I know much about cars, but for all we know, this is possible. Probably tested by Tsuchiya himself
Yup exactly. Car setup and road condition were the largest factors.
Tofu goes uphill and he knows every bump and crack kn the road
Try a zero-countersteer drift! You did the tape challenge, but no drifts.
I would love to revisit these challenges once I have more experience with the RWD layout
plus he drifted around the corners, it's also about balance
Yeah, this emphasizes weight management and balance. I'd have to wait until winter time if I wanted to drift without spilling
+Ridge Chaser yea I feel it. I want to do the water cup challenge on my road. already did the tape challenge. that was fun lol. please post vid of winter time
initial d is one of my favorite shows
Almost every JDM car sounds like an AE86
+Epix I would say the rotaries sound very different
Ridge Chaser Well I mean that they just sound similar
I have been using the water cup technique since I was 15 to drive period add that to being 37 now and also using it while performance high speed drift drag . Car or truck does not matter I did a 90 degree instant turn drift In my f150 over 2 traffic lanes... missed my turn so had to get real . Wish I had video yall
WHERE IS THIS ROAD?!
In my opinion if you have pedal control and you remove you foot from the gas and step the breaks very slowly you might drip very little water or NOT spill any
First what you do is doing a time attack you just rushing like someone chasing you,the water cup challenge is suppose to drive through the mountains as smooth as you could and try not to do oversteer turn like what you do in the video, but drifting is the most efficient way to not spill the water,if you don't know to drift, try to brake softly and turn gently before you enter a corner and that's how you deliver a perfect tofu.
he drifts probably on smooth flat rood going down
you need to drift the car to not let the water spill out. If you watch initial D it said roll the water in the cup by counter steering when turning.
takumi did this thing for 5 years u know
You didn't crash this time KL. Improvement.
Should've played some eurobeat in the car so that the water couldn't have spilled in the car
Try filling the cup to the half
lol can you maybe try doin 1 run everyday 4 six months (at least) starting with a half a cup then gradually increasing water level whenever u see improvements because what you've just shown is exactly what tak said happened to him the first time he tried it and it took him 6 months to do the tofu drift and about the water level, (never read the manga)but i believe that he starts there gradually increasing over the 4-5 years of deliveries he does before the 1st episode in which he incidentally tells his father the water in the cup gets higher every time, nice try tho.
Sesshomaru Nightwing I second this lol.
Water or tofuu?
No one can make the water not spill because the road in anime has no bumpy things on their way, thats why
This is the correct answer! It's a factor that overlooked by many people for some reason.
You could try an after market cup holder that goes on a AC vent like in the 86. Also IDK if you will but a gutter racing video would be sick
I did consider that! It might be more difficult in the Lancer because of the height difference. I'll doing the gutter drop (more like a ditch) but I'll need to obtain the right car for it
Clicked on the video expecting some drifting
Do a video on using gutters and centrifical force! stay safe though...
Oh for your lancer if you don't have a short throw I'd recommend a hurst (mid) short throw. Customer came into my dealership with one it felt really nice on the lancer
Aha yeah I did have the chance to try the hurst shifter on the foxbody Mustang, those things are amazing. I'll convince the Lancer owner to invest in one
well, in the show it took him a few months before he could do it.
Hehe. Laughed in this one. As i was saying bumps and a sweet smooth suspension are critical things in this challenge. Also you could do slower/smoother shifts and more delayed/durational braking/accelerating to eliminate the sudden forces.
Having the cup in that low center of gravity helped you a lot! ;)
Have fun, see you on the next challenge!
Tsuchiya did this, and he proved it can be done.
Could you send a link? I must have missed it
You can't really bust the myth driving like that since Takumi said he couldn't even drive slow withot spilling the water.
awsome drive. where were you.
