Wow, such a great tip for that type saw. Had no idea there was ever a saw built with the choke inside the air filter. I appreciate your knowledge so much am grateful you’re willing to teach us Shade Tree mechanics!! Thank you again Dony!
Don, your videos are always clear and well done. I think your doing a great service and a great job for those of us with far less knowledge on small engine repair. Thanks so much for taking the time.
Dony, you demonstrated how the good filter and bad filter worked and they worked exactly the same...at least that's what I saw...I think. What did I miss?
Ever since a friend gave me his stihl 024 chainsaw because someone put straight petrol/gas in and stuffed the piston.. was told it was as good as a paper weight.. I've been watching your vids and have learnt alot.. chainsaw has been stripped and cleaned right down to the the crank shafts and awaiting new piston kit.. that's heaps for the help my man

Good advice. I put a brand new Stihl air filter on my 026 😊Pro. The aftermarket filters did not seem to work correctly, even a Sten air filter, so I bite the bullet and bought an oem filter. The aftermarket filters would not let the rear cover latch, correctly, on my 026.
Thanks for this video, do you know if the MS382 has a similar set up? I bought one brand new and it starts fine with the choke when cold, but the warm start and the run position when the saw has been running make it extremely difficult to start - plus there is a very strong smell of petrol as if it is flooding.
Hey Donyboy, love your videos, but I'm having an issue with a makita 7900. It has maybe 5 minutes of actual use, but the 2nd time I took it to the woodpile, it would not start and kept flooding. Took it to the shop this past week and when I went to get it the other day, they said it was the spark plug. It was cranking 1st pull the whole day, but I go to cold start it this morning, and the issue is still present. They claim to have checked the carb and coil, and that both of those are OK. But what do you think the issue is? Everybody I talk to on different forums is pointing me to the carb.
Thanks Don! Have a 026 that kept flooding on me. Checked the air filter and the spring on the choke valve was out of place. Put that back together properly and that fixed it!
im confused ...i have an 024 stilhl saw with the same problem,,,,,starts right u but dies almost immediately i removed the part you removed and the spring is connected and working fine,,,,i noticed in the video that the carb flap on yours seems to snap back in the same fashion......so what is it not doing that it should be doing?
I didnt see anything wrong with the flap inside ot clearly looks like it functioning correctly. I dont know why your saying its clearly not working correctly it looked like it was returning to open to me. I must be missing something because when you put in the new air filter the saw worked properly. Can you please explain?
Back in '98 bought a 026 in yard sale...$60.00, did two small jobs with it and charged $30.00 for each time a used it plus my hourly rate......I still have it.
Hey, so I have a 028 av stihl and I rebuilt the carb put a new air filter on, new fuel filter, fuel line, and spark plug. And no luck but when I put gas down the spark plug it starts then stalls immediately. It seems its getting no fuel to the engine but I don't know why. Any tips or ideas? Thanks!
My 026 Pro only COLD starts if I squirt fuel in the carb and then, as long as it is hot, it will restart with no issue. Any troubleshooting recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Any help will do?
The shop I took my ms260 pro to told me my crankcase was broken and it wouldn't start. I brought it back home took the spark plug out and back in not as tight and it started fine. Now however , the symptoms are as in this video but it's a new filter. I'm lost. Can I ship mine to you and you just out a new Stihl ms260 pro engine in it or is it better to buy another one ? Thanks
What about the smaller Stihl models like the 14" inch, any ideas/advice for a similar flooding problem? I think the filter is different, haven't got that far yet. - Thanks
Great video. But I have a Homelite that I went to start and it flooded bad. I let it evaporate and tried 3 times and the gas pores out the muffler. Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks Andy
Clone air filters often inhibit the proper function of the half choke setting of the control lever. I put a Stens air filter for the ms 260 on my 026 Pro and after a couple of months it would not seal off the carb in the full choke position. I never had a reliable half choke setting with the Stens air filter. I bit the bullet and put a Stihl Ms 26 air filter on it and everything works fine, now.
Hi there I have a ms 261 that's about 6-7 years old I got it off a friend who was going to throw it away because it was leaned out by his father in law with improper fuel. It's fairly new just been sitting on a shelf. So I rebuilt it today new topend dumped out the old fuel and put in 50:1 made by stihl fuel. It has spark it wants to run but it won't... I was wondering on this model is the throttle supposed to stay locked with full choke? I dont think anyone touched the carb settings
My 026 rank vent is leaking. It has the same vent as the one in this video. My question is is there a way for it to stop leaking with the screws on the vent or do I need to just buy a new vent
Thank you again for your many helpful videos. Why would they design it this way with no carburetor choke but putting it in the plastic filter? Is this cost cutting? Also, I am shopping for another better chainsaw, probably an Echo. I see that all of the smaller models, up to 45.0 cc, have a purge bulb which I guess is for cold starting. The larger models do not have a purge bulb. How do the models with no purge bulb deal with cold starting? Do they start as well as the one with the bulb design?
Darn! if only my 021 saw had the same problem! It had similar symptoms would run fine at full tilt but wouldn't idle, I cleaned the carb and couldn't find anything wrong and when it was running with the air filter off i could see gas shooting out the air filter box. It would almost idle when the low idle mixture screw was fully seated. Any ideas what would cause that? Thanks!
this is the 3rd time i found one of your videos trying to solve a problem on a small engine i needed to fix, so far ur batting 1000. Good stuff donny, i threw you a sub, thanks for the great work!
old vid, sorry DB. What's that black jobbie for if not a decomp button model of 026? Just a screw to fill the void using same chassis? I thought all 026 are a pro model, but apparently not due to decomp button? ~ Merry Christmas DB. Thanks for the video. Def something I didn't know.
My 026 is spewing out chain oil through the chain oil slot. I replaced the worm gear and cleaned the oil tank and lines but the oil keeps spewing out. If it is the pump that is broken or worn wouldn't it stop pumping oil altogether rather than pumping it out like crazy? The only information online deals with the lack of chain oil. I can't find anything concerning too much chain oil.
Thanks for the excellent video with some really clear instructions and close up shots of the equipment. I'm going to try this fix on my saw right away.
Hey, donyboy73 I have a 026 that did not have a ignition coil on it . I got one and put it on but do not know where the the wires go and how the contact spring fits and works on the saw . could you help me out with that. I have not seen any videos on this. I am a fan of your videos and have learned a lot from you. Thank you for your help. Tom
Fantastic. Thank you. I have a 026 Pro. To shut it off using the lever, I flip it to OOF then have to move it down toward run to I'll the motor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi dony I appreciate your videos I have a Stihl 029 that won't start. I thought it was the coil at first but I have real good spark. After putting a little fuel in cylinder and trying to start it it won't even crank. I did a compression test and the best I could get was 50 psi. I'm fixing it for a friend and think the rings are stuck or not sealing. I did put a bit of oil in cylinder and did compressing test again only getting about 70 psi. Any ideas
Good video. Thanks. However, my issue turned-out to be a step deeper. My fuel line disintegrated just below the grommet where it exits the top of the tank. It was not as easy to fix as replacing the air filter, but I'm guessing the part was quite a bit cheaper.

have a brand new ms 462 ran it twice and third time would not stop flooding any ideas don thanks, johnny down under

Hey , can we use castor oil on the fuel ?
i had a similar problem with a 038 air filter it was hard to start the problem was the the choke in the filter wasn't closing fully

That is nice to know and I may have to work on my saws when I get them back from the repair shop.
so what your saying is when we take the air filter off and if it is good should the flapper be open or closed
open
and how do you no if it is bad or not if the spring is not stiff any more
I don't see the spring is bad - it looks like it is clearly springing back fine as its supposed to in the video.
