      @@FlowProdOfficial It would probably make sense to compare the machines using two identical optimised softwares? The fact that you can get an entry level M1 Mac Mini for like $650 to $700 and get that same M1 processor which runs great on Ableton through Rosetta is amazing. In theory you can get something like the $200 LaunchKey37 MIDI and a $700 Mac Mini with M1 and have a whole studio for under $1K (minus the cost of the software for Ableton 11). Not bad at all considering what it's capable of. At the end of the day maybe $1500 to $2000 for a 'full setup' that you can produce real music and projects with. The barrier to entry has gotten much better for newcomers like me who are newbies and just want to learn the programs.

    I use Ableton mainly for Live Performances and have a huge Project with >50 Tracks, mostly Ableton Synths or Drums. When I opened that Project on my new M1 Macbook Pro 16GB, the CPU load was at 78% (and was going >90% when I performed). On a borrowed 2018 Intel i7 Macbook Pro, the CPU load after opening the project was at 3% (!). Gonna switch to an Intel Macbook till Ableton gets optimized for Apple Silicon.
    Interesting how we both get two very different results. Maybe a Session/Arrangement-View issue?

    • @FlowProdOfficial
      @FlowProdOfficial  3 года назад +3

      That's interesting. How was the audio quality in that project on the M1? I have noticed that the Ableton CPU meter value on the M1 can go quite high even though the project still runs really smoothly.

    • @jewels5480
      @jewels5480 3 года назад +1

      For production, it worked fine and just like you said. The CPU meter value was really high but you could work normally. For Live Performing it was different somehow: Depending on the instrument, up to 50 tracks playing at the same time were working well, but then the audio began to get buggy. That was at about 200% CPU load. I now have a 2020 13" i5 2,0 Ghz 16GB Macbook Pro which runs much better with Live Performing: Up to 100 Tracks without an error. Needless to say it sucks against the M1 at every other task :D

    I’d be interested to know how the M1 is as far as wear on your SSD. Apparently the way it caches to the SSD is greatly improved due to the way everything is integrated but a lot of people are getting readings that they’ve burned through 10%of the use cycle on their SSD in only a month. Not great news given that with everything being integrated you’re looking at the whole logic board needing to be replaced if that is indeed the case.

    • @zeus1117
      @zeus1117 3 года назад

      Yes it’s true. Even with RAM headroom when barely using anything macOS already caches in the most commonly used apps as swap ssd as well. I have returned my M1 since basically everything is running under Rosetta right now and that way even the battery life is not so outstanding. In a couple of months there will be new macs so hopefully those will be better

    • @TheOfficalAndI
      @TheOfficalAndI 3 года назад

      I thought write cycles would be the damaging factor for ssds. How does the caching on the ssd work? Is there an even faster memory inside the ssd used only for caching?

    thanks for this! The buffer size is by far the most important thing for me, like hundreds of times more of an upgrade to my workflow than anything else. I do wish you had done a project with more 3rd party plugins though, since lately my projects are like 90% 3rd party, and I bet those are worse optimized for M1... or are they?

    • @zeus1117
      @zeus1117 3 года назад

      3rd party plugins are not at all optimzed for M1. Also, the entire Ableton is running under translation, so you can’t even install arm vsts since the translated Ableton will only run intel version vsts

    • @TheOfficalAndI

    • @zeus1117
      @zeus1117 3 года назад +1

      @@TheOfficalAndI you will get even worse performance and constant crashes. That is what is happening on Logic which is already native. Everyone uses that via rosetta so that the vsts run normal and don’t open up one by one a rosetta application layer. What a crap.

    • @TheOfficalAndI
      @TheOfficalAndI 3 года назад

    So the highest performing Intel processor on a Mac is a quad core processor? Even the basic ones now usually have 6 cores. What is the actual model of the Intel processor in this comparison?
    Btw project load time depends on the hard drive speed and not the processor, which should obviously be better in newer models.
    Freezing and exporting tracks are tasks that use the cpu heavily.

      Nice! That bodes well for the official release. Great spot!

      Sorry, I missed the last bit where you asked me to test it! Sadly I'm not on the 11 beta program but I'll be sure to re-run the test when the official release comes out.

    I’m going to hold out on getting a Mac mini with an M1 chip until Ableton gets updated for it...but I’m really excited to see what an M1 does already

    I'll let you know something more. If you get the same spec Macbook Air with the M1 and take the back cover off and apply thermal conductivity pads on the thermal areas so that essentially the entire back aluminum cover becomes a heatsink it will outperform the Macbook pro and also have better battery life. Linus on Linus Tech Tips did it in a video on RUclips. It also won't have fans to make noise and that also can fail.

      I could get too hot for putting it on your lap though.

    Isn’t the M1 just a new i5 processor? How does it perform so well??!!

    You are not going to mention that the Intel model has double the RAM of the M1?

    Super informative video! Did you say you ran the M1 on an external display and yet no fan noise?

    Amazing job dude you have my subscription! I'm probably going to get a M1X because i haven't upgraded my MacBook pro since 2011! Definitely hoping Ableton will be optimised for M1 by the release of the M1X 🤞🏽

      Still debugging 11 for Intel (I'm participating in the beta test community), as much as I would like 11 released soon - I've got my upgrade on order, from what I've seen of the Beta it needs more time for features to be tweaked and bugs squashed, let alone rewrite for Apple silicon. I have M1 mini with Ableton 11 Beta, it's not stable enough yet plus some of the new features and layouts need to be refined further IMHO. Genuinely needs time to elapse, then it will be awesome.
