This kind of mind-blowing haha I think I always assumed people whose bracelets were super straight just used superior threads to the ones I'm using, this is such a neat trick! I'm definitely going to test it with both types of patterns
@Filip Martin hello, me from a year (or 2?) ago can now tell you that's it's all about practice, can't bypass it, string doesn't matter (unless you're strings of different thickness in one bracelet), just practice and they will come out straight eventually
Don't know if this will help any; I'm practicing this technique atm and it's basically like doing the flat edge technique on an alpha. (Forward backward/ backward forward knots at the edges.) You just add an extra string at both edges of your project.
Another way I've kept my edges straight is by doing forward knots along the right edge of my bracelet wherever possible, and backward knots on the left edge of my bracelet wherever possible. If you have the same type of knot in long patches along both edges of your bracelet (like that first pattern you showed with just forward knots along both edges), then it tends to curve. Very informative video!
I think it would've been much better if you physically demonstrated the technique instead of just explaining it through words. Visuals are always easier to understand than text alone.
Strain edges technique is also a neat way to seek in another complementary colour which will only be visible in your ties. E.g. if you sneak in lilac thread for straight edges then it'll be invisible until u reach the tie and it'll look like it magically appeared
THIS is the video I was looking for!! I couldn't figure out why my bracelets (only 2 so far 😁) came out super wonky. Perfectly explained and really easy to follow.. I'm going to restart the one I just finished and try out this technique. The "common beginner mistakes" video was also super helpful in me realizing I need to make my knots tighter. Thank you
Actually I'm Korean, your explanation is so easy to understand and it helped me a lot. I couldn't understand the same explanation on note, but your video is not so difficult to understand. From now on I can make more neat and straight bracelet!! Thank you Soooo Much!!!!!!
Amazing - I've been making bracelets for about five years and never would have thought of this, nor had I heard of it. It will be very worth the extra steps to have it turn out straight. Thanks so much for this, and the great graphic illustrations!
Thank you so much Masha! I found this video super helpful and I’m now going to use this technique in my bracelets to come! Have great and happy rest of your day.😁
I am a visual learner, I learn by seeing you do. It would have been nice to see you demonstrate what you were just describing. Other than that, love your videos!!
You see, this just gives the bracelet stability so it looks straight. Just add the backward-forward knots if it is on the left side and forward-backward knot on the right side, because when you do the bracelet the strings on the edges are hanging, but when you add the 2 extra strings you are knotting on them instead of leaving them hanging, so it will make the bracelet a teeny bit wider but it won't be noticeable. Also this is just a hack, but you don't really need to do it. I make bracelets and they are straight without doing this, but this will make it look better though. One last thing, it would really help me if you check my account on instagram @la_luciole_brillante
It wouldn't bc you're only putting knots onto the extra string. Ideally, while doing this, you don't use the extra string to make knots. Hope that helps :)
Masha! I found out how to keep a candy stripe bracelet straight! So, you do the first row normal, then you remove the two outer strings and know the middle knots as normal (so you take the outest string and make a forward knot onto all of the strings, except the two you have taken out)
I have recently decided to make friendship bracelets and I found your tutorials on the bracelets and which are beginner bracelets and your tutorials are so easy to learn from thank you ❤️🥰😍
Hi Masha. I really like this technique, but how do you start the bracelet adding the extra string in? Can I also use this technique with the teardrop loop? thank you. :)
i would be very happy to see a video on how to best integrate a glitter thread. unfortunately i have not found a video on how anyone does it, but i thought you had mentioned it in a video once, but i'm not sure.
Hii, this is a very usefull video, thank you. I am wondering something, if the extra 2 strings used are different color to make them noticeable at first glance, how do you managed to hide them when you finish the bracelet? Do you already have any video or tuto about that ?
I've been trying to find a pattern to make 2 bracelets that match up when they're put side by side. Like one that you keep, and the other bracelet you give to someone. If you have any ideas or know where I can find something like that please let me know! Or if you make up your own patterns to make it that would be a good video! I know I can't be the only one wanting this lol!
Thanks for the tutorial! If you add two strings that won't be visible are you making forward backward \ backward forward knots into them for every row? Your video showed you adding the knots for the rows where pieces stuck out____ but will I only knot those or will every row be knotted over the strings on the outside ? Does that make sense? Ha
where would the string go if im doing triangle ends? i dont want my string to show through but i don't know where to put it to hide the extra strings. also, could you do a tutorial of how to do it? i understand the concept but i dont want to make any mistakes and mess the whole thing up.
So I have a question, if you have a pattern that is like diagonal lines across the pattern, would you add two strings or use the strings that are already called for?
Hi first of all thank you so much for teaching such a great trick but I have a question🥺 What should I do with the extra two threads on the sides when I do a triangle shaped start?? I'm a bit confused... I hope you see my question❤️❤️❤️
How do you know what type of patterns you need the “guide strings” and patterns that are fine without? I’ve seen you do chevron patterns and not doing the guiding strings. But ones like the candy stripes they have the strings.
Do you have a clip of how to start the triangle shape with the extra side thread?? How does the extra side string of a completely different color get incorporated into the triangular beginning shape??
this helped, thanks!! but I still got a question, I made a simple rainbow candy stripe for me and my friends, but after some time I noticed how it started curling inwards and its pretty unaesthetically to look at, is there some trick you could use, so it stops? At least for a little while?
I feel like I'm still rather struggling with this a bit, mainly with the ones where you need to add the hidden bonus strings? I'm probably overthinking it a bit, but when it comes to the odd number rows on a pattern where you DON'T use the bonus string, would you still backward-forward/forward-backward, even if the pattern doesn't call for it? How does it not go cattywompus? I'm just one of those people who can struggle when just given diagrams and instructions. This may be something where a visual may help a bit more. (Bear in mind, I'm still super new to this.) I want to practise this with the basic chevron, but as you taught us with segment knotting, I think my little pea-sized brain is having trouble computing. 😅
I haven't had that issue yet, but this info is very good to have handy! Speaking of two end strands that are the same color, if someone feels like answering, I have a goofy question 😜. I'm new so please humor me lol. I started a pattern where the two end strands on the left side are different colors, & the two on the right are the same. On the latter, which of the two strands should I be using to form that last knot? I can't seem to get it right, & that border is atrocious lol. Meanwhile, the other side is fine. 😜🤦♀️😭
I am currently making a arrowhead bracelet for my best friend and in habe the same Problem with the wonky edges so ist wanted to ask if i can do the Technique on the arrowhead if yes how?
How can you use this technique om bracelets that do not have the same color string at the edges? Or does this only work for bracelets with the same color string on the edges?
Would the edge string need to be the same length as the rest? It seems since they aren't actually being knotted with they could be shorter but I'm not sure by how much and I don't want it to run out before I've finisbed the bracelet
I use forward-backward knots on my edges all the time, but my bracelets are still not straight. I also tape down my bracelet as i add more rows, so I don’t pull it in different directions, but it’s still wonky. I don’t know what i’m doing wrong.
I'm trying this technique right now. But im having an issue. The edges of this pattern are forward backward knots on the outer most edge already, so im essential having to go back and do an extra knot to put the string back into the correct postion. If that makes sense? Not sure if there is a way around this Pattern #34285 on bracelet book for refference
that usually happens if the knots are too loose or if you're not holding the base string tight enough. so just make sure all your knots are tight and that you're holding your base string firmly.
Lucy M i had this problem. if you pull on the string that’s not the base string once you complete the knot, it kinda switches the color so you see the color of the base string. that might be your problem, just don’t pull on the other string

I'm wondering why the pattern didn't already include this subtly in it?
Patterns are created by people just like you and I and not everyone knows about this technique so they don't think to include it in their patterns
Thank you so much Masha! I found this video super helpful and I’m now going to use this technique in my bracelets to come! Have great and happy rest of your day.😁

wait so wouldn’t this give us an extra column of knots?? i’m literally so confused

Still hoping she does the physical tutorial 😩
How would one make a bracelet that has triangle ends on both ends of the bracelet like the one in this video?
does this work for a chevron bracelet?
Yep! But you wouldn't necessarily need it for a chevron since they are pretty balanced anyway (the same amount of forward knots as backward knots)
Do you use this now for every bracelet?
have you done a video like this for alphas? you mentioned it in a different video of how to do it but i’m not sure which
Yep she did. It’s on the straight alpha tutorial
What is the first bracelet you showed called? I want to make that one
This is so helpful I will try this
I tried this and the bracelet is just 2 strings wider. Still I will keep trying.
What do i go if there is a forward backward knot on the left side of the pattern?
Mine always turn out bumpy like all the stitches are bumpy or uneven could you figure out why that is
that usually happens if the knots are too loose or if you're not holding the base string tight enough. so just make sure all your knots are tight and that you're holding your base string firmly.
Juily Vingkar yeh and some colors are in the wrong spots
