    Hi Josh, Qantas was the first airline ever to order and receive their first Boeing 747-200's with 20 passenger windows on the upper deck where they had the Captain Cook first class lounge. Have really enjoyed your Qantas videos. Safe landings.

    Interesting fact, in 1989 a Qantas 747-438 made a world-first non-stop flight in 17hrs, 22mins all the way from London Heathrow to Sydney Australia covering 10,563 miles (17,000+KM’s). This flight broke all non-stop flight records, it was almost 30yrs later that another commercial flight flew from the Australian continent to London non-stop which was also a Qantas aircraft (Dreamliner), though this flew from Perth which is “only” 14,500 Kim’s.
    The 747 aircraft, “City of Canberra” is now on display in a regional airport on display, ironically its final flight time from Sydney was just 15 minutes which is also the shortest scheduled flight ever for a 747. It touched down on a runway less than half the length of a typical major airport and was therefore carrying very little fuel to ensure a safe stopping distance.

    747 fact: upper deck was designed as such because designers thought that supersonic aircrafts would soon become the new queen of the sky. it was designed to easily convert 747s to cargo planes.. 😊

    Fact: The 747 is capable of caring a spare engine, mounted between engine #2 and the frame. Often the plane would have to refuel due to the extra drag.

    the 747-400/er has a larger nose wheel than all the other 747 varients, has a blue rim to to notify tugs its larger, this is for the extra fuel tank under the nose gear - making it the 400/ER Passenger Variant, developed bespoke for Qantas - that the best i got!

    An employee told me (long time ago!) that Qantas maintain all their aircraft in Sydney, so if a 747 had various engine problems, they could fly it back to Sydney from anywhere with min 2 engines! NO passengers of course! But the beautiful old bird was so safe she could go across the world on 2 engines, for maintenance.

    Cool 747 fact - Some models of the 747 had a high-speed flutter problem in the wings, It was solved the by placing depleted uranium counterweights in the outboard engine nacelles...

    • @jordylyons4648
      @jordylyons4648 6 лет назад +1

      Jeff Campbell DU trim weights were used on aircraft for many years they were coated In cadmium plating to remove any radioactivity, Boeing also used them in wing assemblies and rudder manufacture. It’s all common knowledge in the aviation industry I was in the military for a number of years.

    SYD-DFW on QF is longer than SYD-LAX. QF used to use the 744ER before the A380 on this route. I heard, don’t know if true, but Boeing modified the 744ER for QF trying to reach DFW & ORD nonstop from SYD and MEL. Alas ORD was never meant to be. But Josh love ur work, and I love that u have as many coach reviews as u do biz class

    When the 747 was originally introduced Boeing wanted to make a converted freighter version that carried bombs and missiles for the military. It was either used as a flying transporter or the largest bomber with a conveyor belt to release the bombs.

    Two great facts with ELAL Israeli airlines-
    1. They had an all Economy B744 with 521 seats en route from Tel Aviv to JFK, nearly a 12 hour flight.
    2. In 24/5/1991 Israel air lifted over 14,000 Eghiopean Jews in an emergency military evacuation from Adis Ababa to TLV in only 36 hours, using 30 aircrafts. In one B744 belonging to EL AL they boarded 1,086 pax and when they landed there were 1,088 pax as there were two births in the air.

    How much weight does an additional 6-foot (1.8-m) wingtip extension and winglet add to the 747-400 wing? None! A weight savings of approximately 5,000 pounds (2,270 kg) was achieved in the wing by using new aluminum alloys, which offset the weight increase of the wing tip extension and winglet.
