I am exactly the same way. Always enjoyed the Rally cars but never really had a "good" one. ALWAYS love the Subaru. This is a Classic look for this thing. :) It looks awesome!! Be a fun one on the track. BTW.. Doodledaddle. ?? Is that a technical term. lol 4:25 . Now I am wondering if a little stone or a washer or something. Dropped into the motor and jammed it? Just for a second and then what-ever it was may have dislodged? Been there. lol Enjoyed watching bud. I understand the frustration sometimes with certain kits, that make you scratch your head and ask. Why? lol Nice "interlude" ending
LOL, yes, doodledaddles are very important and if not installed properly the thingermabob will loosen up and cause the whatzit to fall off! When the driveline froze up it honestly sounded like two pieces of plastic that were rubbing had fused themselves together. When I tore it all back apart I saw zero evidence of stuff rubbing or binding. It is a mystery glitch I hope is gone for good! I am hoping when I get it out running I fall in love with it. I love the looks of it but the chassis has not won me over yet. I am hoping sliding it all around in the dirt and hearing those rally cars gear changes in my head will win me over! We shall see!
Hahaha i knew you were gonna get a rally car :) Nice build, looks really great and way better with the clera windows. I have the same kit but still need to build it so i cant give you any sugestions on suspension.
I think it looks fantastic and I am sure it is going to drive nicely. I will be finding a place to test drive I will find out how well it does but I am sure it will look awesome out there!
Just finished a TT-02R, only problem was the ball cups were 2mm to long causing inward toe on the front end. Other than that it's a freaking rocket with the Orion 6.5T 😎 also the yeah racing shocks are the bizz... 30 bucks for a great shock
One of these days I should get the R version just to build it with all the extras in one box. They are great kits and blast to drive. I will have to try out the YR shocks as well, I have looked at them before but have stuck with the Tamiya ones. I am always a little skeptical of aftermarket shocks as some are great and some are garbage! Good to know the ones for the TT02 are good.
Looks outstanding Addam!!!! Some of my Tamiya grey/silver wheels have that same "tiger eye" look to them, it's like the plastic wasn't fully melted/mixed before the injection. Great tip with the AA cell, I do that too but never thought of sharing it, I thought it was something we all do. Ah, shocks..... a never ending tuning feature. Great job man!!!! Maybe a school near by?
There are some ball fields near me but having the time to get out there when not I use is the hard part. There are some nice ones nearby but they will chase you off in a heartbeat! At our old house we had a very old dirt diamond right down the road that nobody really ever used but that is a good bit away from me now. I will get out there soon and get it dirty!! The shock really did throw me for a loop. Another thing I learned!!
@@AddamsPlayground I agree, most cases, off-road is softer & on-road is more firm, you did what I would have done. Maybe a set of Tamiya Rally car springs are needed as well as pistons/oils?
@@UncleBobsRC Yeah, I was online trying to track some down earlier but I had to go out and cut the grass! I will find some and swap them out as the ones on there are super stiff like my TT02 on-road cars. I plan on going to the slower, 2 hole shock piston too.
That is really a good looking body. I wonder if it would fit on a TT-02B chassis. I have never built a TT-01 chassis of any kind and your assessment makes me less inclined to try it. I am going to build another Tamiya kit sometime soon. I don’t exactly know which one yet. I have one on order, but I bought it because it was on sale and I couldn’t resist (you know how that goes). But, the model I bought was a Grasshopper 2 Black Edition. I am still looking at other models so I really haven’t decided yet. Whatever it will be, it will probably not ride on a TT-01 chassis.
I was curious and compared it to the plasma edge I have on that TT02B chassis on. The width of that buggy is way wider but I am sure they have shorter arm suspension that would work. Honestly I am not sure but I know Rex just made a RWD TT02 rally car and it looked like a lot of fun.
Thanks, I am not a fan of blacked out windows. Occasionally it is fine, I left them blacked out on the Neo Fighter just because they are so small and it is a generic buggy body. For something like this that is so scale accurate I feel it makes it look cheap and more toy like.
Hi Addam, I hope you are keeping well. Hope you get the shocks resolved. The Scoobie looks terrific! Hopefully when you get it outside and driving it, you’ll fall in love with it. It’s a Tamiya, they are masters in disguise 🥸. Enjoy and take care and best wishes 😊😉😊
I am sure once I drive it I will forget all about trying to line up all those parts and pieces!! It looks great and I am sure it will look fantastic out slinging some dirt and dust!! I think the piston change will help get rid of the bounce and make it drive well.
Nice looking build! Dude, you are the decal master! I recently built my first TT-02R and I had some difficulties with the oil shocks as well. I think in my case, the springs are super hard. I ended up using the stock oil the kit came with and the single hole piston just to keep it from being ultra bouncy like your TT-01. The suspension is still too hard so I am on the hunt for some softer springs. They are surprisingly hard to find! Awesome build yet again!
Yeah, these springs are very stiff as well and are probably better suited for an on-road setup. I am hoping with a slower piston in there it will help until I get more springs as well. Rex suggested I soften the springs too. I don't have much for shock tuning for these tiny things so I am right there with you on the hunt for some spring sets! The car looks great and I am looking forward to seeing it sling some dirt soon.
@@AddamsPlayground Oh that Rex guy...always giving good advice! ;-) There are some option spring kits from Tamiya floating around out there. I cannot find the part numbers right now though. They are like trying to find unicorn poop!
It is a cool looking body. I wanted a more budget friendly car to see if I like the rally cars and if I can drive them around here without much issue. I am sure it'll be fun and I'll end up with a few more!!
@@AddamsPlayground it’s Peter Solbergs Impreza mine is . Great driver and a real nice chap . @@rc-dom-uk I have watched rally here and there and enjoy it but is mostly in RUclips clips. Those guys and gals out there doing that stuff are a special breed to go flying through all that on the edge of disaster the whole time! I did stick the rally block tires on it. I figured a bit more traction and they are slightly bigger, I can use all the ground clearance I can get!
@@AddamsPlayground cool . It’s mostly about ground clearance I think . Will it accept longer tie Rod ends on the shocks? We went to see the rally in 2016 . It was amazing if a very wet muddy day 😂
We have this and I will say that the chassis gets full of gravel and dirt after a run, I would really consider a chassis bag for it, as we have had the drive shaft fail because of a bloomin' big bit of stone that worked its way into it
Thanks for the tip, I will see if I can find one! I think I am going to cover the bottom in a vinyl sheet to try and keep it cleaner and possibly protect the chassis but didn't have a plan for the top side. I kinda feel like they should all come with the inner chassis cover I have seen on a few. It just makes sense but I guess Tamiya didn't feel that way! Thanks again for the tip!
…so you applied the window stickers as intended by Tamiya and cut out the screens afterwards? Do you just do it free-handedly with a sharp pointed cutter or do you use some tape or thing like that, as guides? I would very much appreciate, if all stickers would be factory pre-cut. Especially those larger stripes, where you don't want any transparent bits left at the edges, would be easy to do.
This kit had the precut stickers. Honestly I prefer to cut them out myself as I get tighter to the colors but it is nice occasionally to just be able to peel them off and go. I put the window stickers on as they were and once in place cut the grey part out with a new hobby knife blade. The key is to not firmly press the whole thing down firmly and then very light cuts with the blade. It takes very little to cut through them. Then peel up the throw away part and then go back over the rest to ensure it is stuck down well. I just free hand it but you could use some painters tape or something as a helping guide. A good light and a light touch is helpful... And not too.much coffee!!
@@AddamsPlayground OK, thanks for your reply. I didn't know, there are pre-cut Tamiya decals at all. I am always stressed out in sweat shortly after I have started to cut'em out, even flat on the worktop…
Never had a TT-01... Still want one. I'd fill in the Battery slots. They were made back when balanced NiMH packs were still a thing. Still a good, sturdy Chassis! 👍👍 You'll end up liking it, from the many I've talked to. The Steering needs HELP! But there's lots of Videos out there, because there's lots of ideas on how to improve it, from cheap to OMG. Get a Shim Kit. There's just enough slop in the center Driveshaft to bind the Gears. I've NEVER seen that in Tamiya Wheels before!! 😲 That's an odd one.
The Steering surprised me! Good call on the Bearings. That HAS to be an improvement over the old TT-01. I've heard there's several improvements to the E.
I think it will be very fun once I can get out and run it. It looks fantastic and everything seems to work well and moves well with no binding or slop. I still have no idea why the mystery lock up occurred. It felt just like two plastic parts friction welding themselves to each other. There was zero evidence of anything like that when I tore it all down. The first run should tell a lot and it will either show back up and make itself known or it is a non issue and it'll run great.
@@AddamsPlayground They made a million TT-01s. It's got to be a glitch! Maybe even a piece of flashing or even dirt, that dislodged right afterwards 🤔 I definitely want a TT-01E! It seems they made a lot of improvements over the original... Except for that Battery Tray! NOBODY uses individual Matched NiMH Batteries anymore. 🙄
Cool car, Addam. And somehow a building adventure. Glad you find the solutions👍. Looks as if the modelers have to study these chassis first.😉 I really curious too see it run.
I am just so used to that oil being a little too thick so I went to the more free flowing piston. I'll get it fixed and put running soon. I am very curious about how well it is going to run as well. It looks great and if it drives good then I will be very happy!!
The car looks great. The TT01E is not the easiest build. It's more durable that the original TT01. The front uprights don't break as easily. Unfortunately, they didn't carry over the uprights to the TT02. I have watched other videos and there seems to be complaints about the wheels not being the correct color. Thanks for sharing your insights.
The decals on the wheels saved them for sure. If it was not for those covering up the streaks it would not look as nice. I am looking forward to getting it out and run it. I still have to find a good spot and change the shock pistons but I hope to get it out soon. It should look great slinging some dirt!!!
Hi Addam. That was interesting as I'm about to start building a TT-01 type E. Mine is one of the racing trucks though. I wonder what the issue was with it binding? I'll see if I have the same issue. I'm going oil shocks and I think that mine is on road only really so I'll do a firm set-up. Great info thanks. Top job with the Subaru shell :-)
The drive train freezing up seemed like it was two plastic parts friction welding themselves together. I found nothing like that when I tore it down so I am not sure. Runs great now. I have also looked into getting one of those. They look super cool and looking forward to seeing your build!! Going with the firm setup is probably a good idea
Nice walktrough :) How is the ride height on this one compared to TT02 "high"? I find that TT02 is actually pretty good on high and as high as the rally chassis XV01.
Thanks! I say there is close to 1/4 inch (6-7MM) difference in the two, enough to give it some needed clearance but not too high to cause wonky driving. It does seem to body roll a bit more on the higher setting but nothing ridiculous. For rally I would go ahead nd build them on the high setting.
Despite the issues, the car looks great Addam! I hope you get the shocks sorted. I put some tape over the battery area to try and prevent a lot junk from getting in there. 👍😊
Thanks, I love the look of it, just not sold on the chassis yet. I am trying to find a softer set of springs and will be changing the 3 hole for a 2 or a 1 hole piston before running it. I saw just the other day someone using some carbon fiber print vinyl as a chassis protector. I happen to have some about that size so I may do that and cover the entire bottom and then back tape the slots to keep dirt from sticking to the exposed vinyl. That didn't click until you mentioned it so thank you a ton for triggering that!
Really sweet car Addam! I really like this! All the discrepancies you mentioned though are valid.. the main things to me would be suspension and wheels. I love the style of the wheels, but the plastics used and the way it was melted are what cause the “tiger Stripes”. I’d either take a scotch brite pad to them and plasti dip the wheels or buy or print some new ones. Still overall I think I like this set up. Thanks for sharing brother. Great video!✌🏻🍻👊🏼
It looks fantastic and I hope it drives equally as well! The wheels do look a lot better with the decal on them they hide a lot of the stripes. Overall I think it is going to be a great car, I just have not had the time to get it out to a decent spot to test drive it. Soon though we will see what is does!
It works well overall and I did have a blast out running this one all over the baseball field. I think with Tamiya in general you have to embrace the weirdness, all of them have quirks! LOL!
Excellent build and great work on the body! Looks amazing!🙌 I have a tt01 too but that one’s set up for drifting with locked diffs. Mine came with friction shocks so I swapped that out for oil filled ones. It’s a good handling chassis and I look forward to seeing it attack your track.👍😊
Thanks, it looks great, I love how it turned out. I want to get it out on a flat surface to test it out before trying to tackle Elf Mountain with it! Not sure how well it may handle that!
Hi Addam, this Subaru is very different from the one I built som time ago. I'm agree with your mind on chassis. Tamiya makes so many different chassis and this find me a little confused...... Ciao
I am hoping once I can get out and drive it I will fall in love with it. I love the way it looks but I not so impressed with the chassis so far. For an on road car it makes more sense but for a rally car, well, we will have to wait and see! I think it will do fin and I will be happy once I can get out there and slide it around in the dirt!
@@AddamsPlayground My Impresa on the track is quite nice, but hasn't the dumpers run long as the real rally cars so its a little bouncy. It requires attention even for small rocks. on asphalt, fantastic. Ciao
Great work Addam. Love that too with the battery 👍🏻 Thanks for your opinion on the build of the TT01. Does sound a little more fiddly than the TT02 but I believe they drive very similar. Look forward to seeing it running mate 👍🏻🙌🏻
The battery test has helped a lot in the past. From finding odd noises and issues before putting it all together or trying to run it on full power and possibly damaging things. Getting those front and rear diff cover on is like trying to dress a little kid that does not want to sit still... Just as you think you have it something pops free and runs away! After doing it all twice it became easier but still fiddly.
There is enough room in the chassis to run anything from the old AM/FM radio gear to the smaller more modern 2.4ghz gear in there. Basically you mount either the ESC or the receiver into the chassis between the servo and the motor and the other gets stuck down to the servo. I mount my ESC down low and the receiver up on the servo case. Just to keep the weight down low.
I want to purchase my first rc and I was looking at the FTX TRACER BRUSHLESS but I want something that is a real car, as I am deeply into cars also. I would use it for grass, gravel and dirt so which do you recommend? The Tamiya Subaru OR the FTX TRACER BRUSHLESS??
In short grass it should go ok and on small gravel it should do ok. On taller grass it is going to want to float due to the lower ground clearance and likewise on larger rough gravel.it is going to scrape and hop by getting bounced about. The best surface is going to be something like a dirt track or ball field to run around on but it will work on other surfaces just keep in mind the low ground clearance issues. The chassis is plenty tough so it can handle the rough, it will just tax the motor and suspension but a lot in tall grass and really rough gravel.
@@AAK18. it does have a bit more ground clearance and should do better in gravel. Still be careful with it as they will run hot of you are going through taller grass. Fresh mowed length is fine but taller than that these small ones drag a lot and can cause overheating and/or motor damage from the heat. I don't get too many of the smaller ones due to that as most of my driving is in the grass.
It was really weird, took it all apart, verified the hardware and parts were all in place correctly and reassembled and it stopped doing it. not sure what went back together differently but it has worked fine since!
Sorry for the late reply, I had to get off of work and go out and measure it for you! It is 183mm wide at the front and 188mm wide in the rear at the fenders which are the widest parts. The hood is 142mm wide at the front and 153mm wide at the rear. It is a 257mm wheelbase and overall it is 435mm bumper to bumper (give or take a few mm for the length). I hope that helps you out.
There are no headlight buckets included with the kit but I am sure you could mask off the headlight and tail light areas and create your own light buckets easily enough.
Yeah, this one is kind of outside my normal but it kind of makes it exciting to learn a new car and learn to drive it. I am sure once I can get it out slinging some dirt around and get some good footage of that I will fall in love with it. I appreciate you stopping by and watching it even though it isn't your type of thing.
I just have never seen in to drifting but it is a very nice looking car and you have done a very nice job on it very good looking for a car i really do enjoy your video
I am still wondering what happened too! I took it all apart and found nothing out of place, no wear or even any chunks of random trash in anything that would cause it to act up. I took it for a run and it was super fun and it ran like a champ without a single hiccup! One of those fluke things I guess! I am not a fan of not knowing what was the problem but it was some magic taking it apart and putting it back together that fixed it I guess! LOL!
Hi Paul! I run nimh packs in mine and I get my batteries usually from Amazon. You can find the Zee brand nimh packs for a very reasonable price, right now you can get 2 3600mah batteries for $32 or 2 5000mah batteries for $45. You can run lipo in them but I have never run one in this so I am not sure about fitment, some packs might and others might not, there is a lot of variation between lipo battery case sizes and styles. The nimh style batteries fit in there perfectly and are very similar to the old nicad packs from back in the day but a lot longer run times!!
@@paul_010R It really depends on if you have a transmitter or not and if it able to be used with multiple models. I assume you do not have one so My best recommendation for a budget radio is the Flysky RC FS GT2B. I works well and has a rechargeable battery for the transmitter. There are lots of others in the $40-$70 price range. Almost all modern 2.4 ghz radio systems will work great for you. This one you will have to do some shopping around for to find one you like and suits your budget. More expensive ones can hold multiple models in the memory so you can use one transmitter for multiple cars. If you have a transmitter then you will have to look it online to see what receiver will work with it.

We shall see!
nice build and paint job brother
Thanks, I like the way it looks. I hope it drives just as good!
@@AddamsPlayground 👍😊
Hahaha i knew you were gonna get a rally car :) Nice build, looks really great and way better with the clera windows. I have the same kit but still need to build it so i cant give you any sugestions on suspension.
I am looking forward to seeing how it drives. If it drives as well as it looks it should be super fun!!!
Very Nice Build
It is amazing! I have it myself too, and I ride it a lot whit my friends ;)
It really is a fun one to drive and I really need to get back out with it. I have 3 or 4 other rally cars on the wish list now because of it!!!
I really like how you did the windows. Looks better then all black.
Thanks, I am not a fan of blacked out windows. Occasionally it is fine, I left them blacked out on the Neo Fighter just because they are so small and it is a generic buggy body. For something like this that is so scale accurate I feel it makes it look cheap and more toy like.
beautiful build!
Thanks, it turned out really great looking!!!
@@AddamsPlayground Oh that Rex guy...always giving good advice! ;-)
There are some option spring kits from Tamiya floating around out there. I cannot find the part numbers right now though. They are like trying to find unicorn poop!
Nice I got this body to . Gonna plonk it on the XV01. 👍
I collect the rally bodies as I’ve followed the Wrc in it’s forms since a lad in the 80’s when I first saw the group b cars . I’m trying to find a McRae car .
Have you got any rally bloc tyres ? They help grip a lot 👍👍👍
It was amazing if a very wet muddy day 😂
@@AddamsPlayground you could always slap the body on a toa2 which is a good chassis I converted for rally 👍
@@AddamsPlayground the accessory market is a financial black hole!
BTW, the Body looks GREAT!!!
Maybe even a piece of flashing or even dirt, that dislodged right afterwards 🤔
I definitely want a TT-01E!
AA Battery tip is 👌
Thanks! Makes it easy to find issues early on and lets you know it is moving free and easy!!
The TT01 is a rougher design compared to the TT02... but I've fully embraced its weirdness in my rally build.
Looks good!
Thanks, it looks awesome and I think once I can drive it I will fall in love with it.
Can I use any receiver I want for the Subaru?
There is enough room in the chassis to run anything from the old AM/FM radio gear to the smaller more modern 2.4ghz gear in there. Basically you mount either the ESC or the receiver into the chassis between the servo and the motor and the other gets stuck down to the servo. I mount my ESC down low and the receiver up on the servo case. Just to keep the weight down low.
Can these be used on grass and gravel?
@@AddamsPlayground thanks!
Might go for the FTX TRACER BRUSHLESS as that will cover everything.
@@AAK18. it does have a bit more ground clearance and should do better in gravel. Still be careful with it as they will run hot of you are going through taller grass. Fresh mowed length is fine but taller than that these small ones drag a lot and can cause overheating and/or motor damage from the heat. I don't get too many of the smaller ones due to that as most of my driving is in the grass.
Hello from southeast alaska
Hi William, thanks for checking in!
I wonder how it does on the track......
Once I see how it goes out on a ball field it may end up going around the track. Not sure how well it will deal with Elf Mountain!!
Your problem is probably the screws hitting the spur gear. Use shorter black screws
It was really weird, took it all apart, verified the hardware and parts were all in place correctly and reassembled and it stopped doing it. not sure what went back together differently but it has worked fine since!
What’s the total width & hood width? Thx
@@AddamsPlayground THANK YOU!
And you’re not late at all with your reply. 👍
Great video - like....
There are no real headlights for this Subaru?
There are no headlight buckets included with the kit but I am sure you could mask off the headlight and tail light areas and create your own light buckets easily enough.
It's a nice looking car but I don't think that it's what I'm into I I enjoy your video
Man I'm so wondering what happened and why it did that to you that stuff bothers me lol but what can you do
I am still wondering what happened too! LOL!
Like 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I bought this car but i forgot to buy the battery's, And i don't know what battery's i need to buy. Can you help me??
@@AddamsPlayground Thanks!!
@@AddamsPlayground Sorry for all the questions but what reciever do i need to buy/use?
