  • Adrian Newey is one of the most iconic names in Formula 1 - a design genius who has overseen world championship winning success with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.
But he has never courted the limelight that his talents and achievements would deserve. He rarely gives interviews, and he definitely isn’t one for soundbites over a grand prix weekend.
However, The Race’s F1 writer Mark Hughes got a rare opportunity to sit down with Newey for an in-depth conversation, which recently became the 10-thousandth article published on our website since we launched in February 2020.
The interview was so good, we thought we’d go through some of the highlights from it with you here on our RUclips channel as well.

When Newey does leave Red Bull, I hope he spends a little time advising the FIA on technical regulations. It would be nice to have someone pushing for a bit more freedom so we get more variation in the cars. Plus he now has such a good intuition with how they will affect the cars

I can see where Newey comes from with his complaint about big inefficient EV designs, but I think the trend of EVs getting bigger is due to two factors, and it's for more or less the same reasons why F1 cars are getting bigger: safety concerns and the added weight of the batteries. The only thing you can hope for is that the size of EV-batteries can shrink enough over time that these cars can become less bulky and more efficient without the need to sacrifice range in order to do so.

Reading the interview after this video made me realize what Newey really meant. Your summary/interpretation together with the picture hints at something different than what Newey actually said…

    Brilliant mind indeed.
Max Verstappen openly stated that he would retire if Newey did.
Great amount of mutual respect and an unbeatable combo in the world of F1.

Interesting words from Newey during a quick News interview on the BBC that I haven't read anywhere else after he was asked about the wind tunnels penalty RB was supposed to greatly suffer from this year ,he said (with a humble smirk) 'the wind tunnel & computer simulations are mostly there to confirm what we already knew'..!!..ouch..!!..it says it all on the confidence he & team have on his knowledge and more traditional approach about aerodynamics.....

I do wonder what Newey has to say about the double diffuser back in 2009. From what I've read and watched, Red Bull had the toughest time redesigning the rear of their RB5 car to accommodate a double diffuser. Would be interesting to know how he tackled that problem.

As much as I would love to be at a race weekend and take a peek in the garages of F1 teams, I would give that up in a heartbeat to sit next to Newey for an hour when he works on solving a problem.
I'm so curious as to how he would approach whatever problem he has to solve and to figure out how he thinks, I would love to be a fly on the wall just to see how that process goes.
Probably wouldn't get it even if he explained it though :D
