  • A low cost alternative to replacing the complete compact water heater Assembly is to change just the blown Stainless Element itself. The same heating element is used on Bosch, Neff , Siemens Hotpoint and many other brands. If you want and element then see listing on eBay search "BOSCH DISHWASHER INSTANT WATER HEATER ELEMENT 642870 STAINLESS STEEL"
    Listed at cost + Handling. Sold not for profit.

    Great video! I had my inline heater off years ago when I tore the bottom components all apart to investigate why my washer wasn't finishing the cycle. I ended up needing a new circulator pump. I became very intrigued by this inline heater device you're repairing, and I researched what it does. The "sensor" part you mentioned not knowing exactly what it's for is designed to sense the amount of food particles that are suspended in the water being circulated through the machine. This is supplied with washers that have an "Optimizer" setting to cut the cycle short to save water and electricity when it senses the water is free of particles after a couple rinse cycles.

      Thanks. It senses the position of the rotating disc that can shut off the water pressure to one or other of the sprayer arms. To boost the jet power and also allow top tray only operation.

    On mine the heating element was fine, as was the thermistor. Only other suspect was the mechanical timer.
    I opened the timer and found one contact to be blackened and sooty.
    I located a new timer on eBay and just installed it.
    I’m just finishing up the project and will be testing my dishwasher soon.
    Bosch Model SHU3006UC.
    Installed new in my new house back in 1997. Moved in and first used the machine in spring 1998.
    The best dishwasher I’ve ever had.
    I hope it lasts 25 more years.
    Thank you for your videos. You helped me diagnose and fix my machine, for sure!

    Great video, really helpful info, I recently followed your guide for my Bosch. Everything was actually healthy, but I then traced the wire back to the main PCB and found one of the contact pins of heater relay had burned out. It's a standard relay, widely available, bought mine from RS for £1.63! Just thought I'd share for anyone in the same boat.

    And, Mr. Smoke, I bought one of your (I presume) elements ex eBay to repair an 11-year-old Neff dishwasher, otherwise in good shape. The old element was spectacularly encrusted with scale. I veered from your method only a touch: I did cut off the defective element with an oscillating multi-tool, but knocked off the one-way clip retaining washers then tapped them into their new home. Probably a little looser than yours.
    Anyway, although quite some work, I felt happy enough for the little victory and have you to thank for it. My wife was less than impressed at the time it took but dealt with the cost saving in time-honoured fashion. An overspend elsewhere. It's the small wins in life that make it worth the effort of breathing.
    I kept pictures but nothing to do with them. Should be a site for small-win, big effect moments.

      Hi David, thanks for the purchase. Good job. There are definitely more than one way to skin a cat!! I have come to realise that if you live in a hard water area then an empty hot-wash cycle with a cup of white vinegar every 6 weeks is a very good idea. Especially if you have one of the later pump/ heater modules with thin-film heating elements.

    I got your element a few weeks ago and finally installed it today. Happy to report that my Bosch dishwasher is again churning away! Thanks! PS. Though I have enough experience, I did not apply my good sense and was not wearing gloves. I manage to slice the top of my finger on the metal ring where the drain rubber seal is. Totally my fault. Also, I was able to open the heater unit without removing it. Took an unreasonably long amount of time but with some little plastic square tabs and a long zip tie, I managed to unlock the tabs and remove the element. Again, thanks for making this available 👏👍👍👍👍

      Good job. i did that once when I was in a hurry but my hands were sore afterwards. If they had put a couple of stainless screws in to secure the element it would make it a 5 minute job. Let's face it the element should be considered a consumable and be easily accessible and replaceable without creating a lot of other scrap parts. We get the satisfaction of making the dishwashers last longer but we don't make any money from the elements. I own a company that ships every day so they just pick them from the shelves and send.

    Mine isn't getting hot, and after spending all day fiddling with the control board, I now know that power IS heading down to the heater, so now to see what part of that isn't working.
    This is great. Well explained, everything shown.
    If mine needs an element, I know where to come - and if it doesn't - I have an idea what is inside anyway.
    Thanks heaps!!!!
    Oh - you mentioned that there is a sensor that you weren't sure what it was. On mine (SGS55M98AU76) that sensor is a "turbidity sensor" - which senses how dirty the water is so then senses how long/hot to wash on the "auto" setting........

    Thank you for your video's about the Bosch dishwasher. I was looking before, for my problem with it but I still don't understand: The programs ends most of the times with a error. Mostly E7 and sometimes E9. Lots of time, the dishes is not clean(!) and a lot of times, the dishes is not dry. I thought, he didn't warm up but sometimes, it looks like the dishes are still a little warm.
    And I have another really stupid thing with my machine: The functions of the right 3 buttons in front, controlls the signs of the left side, and vice-versa. I know, because when I touch the Variospeed button, the display says "24h" (exactly the button from 'the other side'). I tried to dismantle the door to easily change out the wires on the PCB but I couldn't because of the prefab plugs. It didn't fit the other way around.
    So I have a question: All these problems, can they also be the result of a kind of mainboard or motherboard failure or something? Don't know much about dishwashers (thats clear wit a machine like mine ;) ) but I would like to try to fix it though but changing parts out, not knowing if they are broken, is maybe wasting money.
    Thank you very much. Hope to hear from you.

    • @razenby

      The fist thing to do is disconnect the power and remove the LHS side cover. Then clean check the float assembly and level pressure bellows. This the most common cause of problems. Once the water level sensing is working it should be OK.

      I fitted your new heating element on a 13 year old BOSCH SRS55C02GB/01. This is a slimline model and wasn't heating any more, but not tripping. I found it tricky to disconnect the heating assembly from the pump assembly but I could still prise out the white heating element holder with blunt screwdrivers. The new heating element has the exact dimensions of the old one. I replaced the thermistor at the same time. Initially the old heating element tested OK while installed (the water was drained), but when I got it out I saw white corrosion. When I put the element in pan with water at ~100°C it measured a resistance of 800 kOhm between Live and earth. Just to say that you can be deceived in measuring resistance sometimes and then you look at other possible causes for a failure to heat (thermistor, relay switch, controller board). The other thing I found was that some of the pipes were clogged up with gunk so I had to spend time cleaning them up. My dishwasher now works and smells like a new! one It's a worthwhile thing to do if you have time, interest and some mechanical skills.

      @@razenby thanks again for another very helpful video. Meanwhile I had completely stripped down the whole component, cleaned it and put it back together, along with every other part of the dishwasher. I also dismantled to check the little servo motor on top of the heater assembly and reassembled it. A little trick there if you don't correctly engage the cogs it will get stuck, quite fiddly. I guess that is cycling water between the top and bottom shelves. Anyway now the dishwasher is heating properly and I now have two minor residual issues. The dispenser door doesn't open despite being replaced and the cycle never finishes. Both of which point to the main circuit board. I did find another video suggesting repairs might be needed there, re soldering. Will try that before replacing it. Both have work arounds though, put the tablet in after about 30 minutes and switch it off when the end light comes on. Not ideal by at least it is working.

      Check the connections on the heating element and the thermostat are attached and tight. It could be a faulty element but it would be the first one. When the machine is cold there should be continuity across the thermostat contacts. Sometimes when the element fails it can damage the thermostat.

    • @seanbutler7876
      @seanbutler7876 3 года назад

      @@razenby I checked the connections and they were all on and tight, however the push on washers were a little loose as the diameter of the replacement heating element is slightly smaller than the original. I reduced the gaps on the washers so they fit on a bit tighter but still no luck with heating the water. Do they have to be on really tight for it to work? If it worked for a few days after I changed the heating element that would mean the thermostat was still working unless it has subsequently failed. I have been unable to test the thermostat as I don't have a multi-meter.

      The thermal cut-out switch in the video is a safety device to stop the water boiling if there is a heating fault. Yes, it could be the thermal cut-out, the flow switch (assuming you have flow) , the heater control relay or even perhaps the temperature sensing thermistor. The latter is much less common. If the controller thinks the water s hot it wont turn on the heater, Have a careful look at the spade terminals in the heater wiring including all the hose power connections to the controller. Look for signs of overheating, discoloration, charring etc. Both the flow switch and the thermal cut-out can easily be checked with a continuity meter. That's it - good luck.

    Hi great video , I have had this issue with Rcd tripping seems to do it 1/2 -3/4 way through cycle. So think it’s heating element, however also had red tap light come on and brush light seems to be trying to drain water? So think I need to do element but didn’t want to do this if something else could be faulty? May require an element from you , but be interested to know your thoughts on the other issues, when cleaning I did find a piece of glass in bottom of drain close to propeller drain? Please let me know your thoughts

    • @razenby

      Thanks. Difficult to say. Do you own a multi meter? Have a look in the base to see if any water is there indicating a pump leak. If you do the reset using the front panel the reset it should drain any water in the unit. You can check see if there is any problem or blockage with the drain pump. I usually put a hose don the end of the drain pipe to see if the water is freely flowing back into the machine. If you do NOT have an RCD in your house consumer panel then a ground short can occasionally take out the thermostat (see video - sues switch contacts) or the Heater relay. With No RCD is its a short to chassis earth that blows the MCB out at a much higher fault current (25A) instead of the 20mA with the RCD, If you disconnect and the heating element and tape up the wires then the DW should run for a while. Older ones just run and run because the target temp isn't reached. the later smarter ones should a heater error. You can get a good idea if everything is working except the heating circuit, then you can concentrate on that.

    • @razenby
      @razenby  4 года назад +1

      Probably the element. If you have a multimeter then with the washer disconnected from the power, check accross the element connections on the Ohms (resistance range) It should read a few tens of ohms (20 to 30 ohms). If you are aware of the risks then run the unit with the side removed on a hot cycle. After about 10 to 15 minutes the immersion heater should switch on and you will read mains voltage across the element. If you don't get that then it could be the thermostat, 10% of the time the thermostat gets blown up when the element goes short. usually the element sorts it. I have stock.

    Mate - I noticed that there is oil in the white plastic end cover of that heater element while you are handling it........ Mine has the same - and there is a fair bit of oil in the bottom of the dishwasher cabinet underneath the heater assembly.
    I thought maybe it came from the heater - but where? When you sawed it open - just ceramic.
    But there is oil on the end cap of mine - and pooled under the heater in the base. WHERE can it come from????? There is no oil ANYWHERE else.
    Dishwasher is driving me crazy. It doesn't get hot enough, only get hot (up to 60 deg) on 70 deg cycle........... and won't finish as sticks on "1" forever indicating a heater fault.
    Initially, flow switch was U/S (too stiff); so I dismantled heater hoping to find blockage.
    But clean as a whistle in there. Thermistor reads 2.95 k at 70 deg, down to 40 k at room temp of 26. Heater element is reading 24 ohms, which should be ok.
    Really don't want to throw it away, but running out of options.
    But any ideas on that oil??????

    • @razenby
      @razenby  3 года назад

      It is from a leak somewhere. The greasy water evaporates and leaves the oils from the food behind. Possibly the heater going open circuit when it heats up.

      @@razenby Hey mate, thanks for the reply.
      Makes sense about the oils being left from a leak; never seen any water in there, but where else could it come from?
      Also makes sense about possible intermittent fault with heater as temp changes.
      Initially I found a stuck float, gummed up shuttle valve in the heat exchanger, and a "too stiff" flow switch. Replaced/cleaned all = gets hot in middle of 70 deg cycle (as said above); but not much else.
      I might have to do a trial to see if element cuts out when hot.
      Very frustrating; don't want to "contribute to landfill" and buy another, but will see.
      If I can confirm the heater is intermittent, will then replace. But don't want to cut it up without confirmation.
      Thanks for the ongoing feedback.

      I reckon that oil came out of the heater end seal. When I removed the heater end cover, there was traces of that oil between the seal and cover. In your video, the end seal is covered in the same brown oil. I think mine has just seeped out.
      I will do a trial on the heater, firstly immerse it in boiling water and see if resistance changes. If not, I will run it and see if it goes open cct when running under it's own power/generating heat.
      I initially also had problems with not filling completely, which of course makes low level/pump cavitate/flow switch open = no heater. But I fixed the shuttle valve in the heat exchanger (matrix), and there is nothing wrong with the fill sensor ........ so running out of ideas.
      Sorry this has been such a "back and forth." Frustrating when everything I check is working.......
      No need to reply if you are busy. I feel like I have taken up far too much of your time and patience already.
      But thanks for your help thus far.
      Cheers;
      Ken H
