  • I added this Walrus Audio "Ages Five-Stage Overdrive" to my pedalboard a few years ago and it never left. This is a quick recording to show you how I use it for solos. I start with the clean tone I'm getting with my Strat and Marshall, then kick in the Ages to push the tubes and get some really great tone.
As far as preference goes, I use Stage IV and keep the dry at 2 o'clock and that seems to work great with my Strat. I mentioned this on another video, but one of the coolest features, for me, is the dry mix. Game changer. Genius thinking from the engineers at Walrus, IMO.
In their words: For Ages, overdrive has been the one effect vital for so many. It’s used to charge through front lines of the mix and deliver a clear message that won’t soon be forgotten to its loyal listeners. Ages is a massively versatile overdrive machine standing at the ready for any amp and pickup combination that is thrown at it. An overdrive with innovative features that can stand on its own and stack well with other drives, Ages is ready to stand its ground and convey an unforgettable sound.
The five-position rotary knob offers the following gain states:
    I. Low-gain mode with symmetric silicon soft clipping. Compressed and smooth.
II. Low-gain mode with symmetric LED soft clipping. Pushed, open, and sparkly.
III. High-gain mode with symmetric silicon soft clipping. Increased saturation and tight.
IV. High-gain mode with symmetric LED soft clipping. Saturated, punchy and big.
    V. High-gain mode with symmetric silicon hard clipping. Heavy compression, thick and chewy.
This is merely a video to show how I'm using this pedal for solos. If there's interest, I'll show more use cases.
This demo was made with a 1999 '57 American Vintage Reissue Fender Strat with a DiMarzio Tone Zone S bridge pickup and a set of Virtual Vintage middle and neck, 9-46 Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky's tuned to Eb and plugged into a Marshall DSL15C. Nothing special mic wise, just an iPhone 12 Pro on a tripod.
