I had an i3 3020 l bought years ago used and after watching GB's vids I decided to pop a used i7-4790 in it, a leftover PSU that was in my closet, and just barely fit an MSI 1660 Super Ventus OC in it. Gaming at 2k now at 60 fps and couldn't be happier.
I got a dell 9020 MT model. It came with 8gb of ram, 500GB hard drive, i7 4790 CPU for $100 shipped. I got a GTX 1070 founder's edition for $95 and a 600 watt power supply EVGA for $60. All in it's just under $300.
So, I feel like I should have mentioned the HP 8300 system, and perhaps even the HP Z series workstations. The 8300 is the predecessor to the the 400/600/800 G1 and comes with the 3rd gen CPUs, so go with the 3770. And the Z series workstations, tend to be more expensive, but they're a bit higher end, but they're worth looking into, especially if you want to go with a 6th gen CPU.
I was about to recommend the HP Z series workstations. Specifically the Z230. They come with a workstation class 400W supply and 6-Pin PCIe adapter already. So you can run most mid-range cards without an issue. Also you have more space for a longer GPU. I bought from this seller specifically: www.ebay.com/itm/133472959456 I just bought the one for $100 and i got my own RAM, Hard Drive & SSD to put in there. I thought it was a pretty good deal in this market.
hi i have 3010 MT with 3770k 1050 ti 2x8gb 1600mhz 1080p 60h monitor. Can i put 1660s-ti, 1070-1080, 2060 in this build and game with no bottlenecks? also i would upgrade psu. thx.
Great video! I have an Optiplex 790. I got an i7 9700f for my birthday yesterday. Tried to install it doesn't fit. Is the i7 not compatible with optiplex 790? Thanks in advance for your time.
@@TheGameBench you might would be surprised, a WHILE back tech syndicate made a video on the lenovo thinkpad t440p and they are still expensive which makes sense because they are super awesome
I gave up trying to figure out a CPU cooler solution, so used some Kingpin thermal paste and my i7 never goes above 69c at full load, often in the low 60s with regular use too and in the mid 30s at idle. Stuff might knock your temps down even more.
@@dangerhighdoltage Yeah the CPU fan header on the mobo requires a proprietary fan. There is a special converter cable which can be used to bypass that requirement.
@@Gero141 yeah that connector is a pain. I read there are also special sensors on it that aftermarket coolers don't have, so that's why I opted for just getting the best paste I could get instead. The old paste was literally dust!
@@Gero141 those are good temps! I was worried putting the i7 to the max would heat up a lot, but so far so good. The haswell CPUs run cool so that helps as well.
Solid video, and you're right about a lot of prices getting stupid. I'm about to do a video on one, but I can suggest picking up a Dell Optiplex 7020/9020 with an i3 and upgrading to a Xeon. Haswell-era Xeon server systems are coming out of warranty and will be flooding the market. I picked up a 7020 with an i3 for $73 (bought, taxed, and shipped) and upgraded to a Xeon e3-1271 v3 and it works great. You have to upgrade the CPU cooler, but it's still worth it. Paid $90 for the Xeon(which is basically an i7 4790 minus graphics) and cleared $25 selling the i3. $140 starting point with 8GB RAM, but no hard drive. Also, remember to update the BIOS with the i3 in to make sure you have the microcode for the Xeon. Happy upgrading, everyone!
I haven't looked at i3 systems in a while. Last I looked people wanted just as much as the i5 systems. But yeah, at a reasonable price, getting the i3 and swapping it for a cheap Xeon, then selling the i3, make a lot of sense.
@@reggieangus5325 Yeah, eBay. Some people grab them on Ali Express. You won't find them in an OptiPlex, unless someone changed it out. Usually you'll find the in the Precision systems.
Welcome back dude , i found oem systems became stupid , greedy dealers raised prices dramatically , in my country i7 4770 costs 130$ i7 3770 for 80$ , wtf why then i buy used platform
I've been "hunting" optiplex 7040 like crazy but the fact that if you don't do the math before you would spend more that building your own. Thank you for the video.
@@natedagreat6704 if you can find a good deal for an Optiplex go for it, otherwise build your own but now GPU prices skyrocket made it hard to save in any build.
Thank you, buying myself one for an early christmas present, was going to spend almost 300$ found one for 147$ with a core I5 so thanks for making me save a lot of money
Since I had already had an Optiplex 7020 with a gen 4 I5 processor and 8GB of ram I bought last year for $165 on eBay, I had great interest in your previous video involving a GTX 1060 Vcard. I have been an eBay shopper since 1997 and have learned how to watch and lurk for good buys. I watched 6GB GTX 1060s for several weeks going for $130-150 without exception. A few single fan units went for $105-115 but I wanted the dual cooling fans. I got impatient and finally bid on one and ended up paying over $135 for it. The going rate it seems. I ended up using metal shears to make enough room for the 10.5 inch video card, yea its ugly...but it works. I replaced the HD with a SSD anyway so the lower HD cage wasn't needed. I have purchased my last 5 PCs 2nd hand through eBay and have never been disappointed. Thanks for the videos and ideas, I now am back to gaming in my spare time...which is more than usual with the Covid putting everything on pause including my full time employment.
This is great. I just bought an I5 9020 on amazon a day ago. Then I found your videos and realized how stupid I was and cancelled right away. Got the same model with an I7 and double the ram on ebay for the same price.
Thank you so much for keeping us updated on what we can do with these machines. I have a MacBook Pro and got into gaming since COVID lockdown. I was going to get an eGPU for it but discovered for way less money I could build my own gaming PC with second hard parts. It's been heaps of fun researching parts and scouring for good deals. I bought a 7010 i7 yesterday and was wondering how it would perform with the 1600 series cards since I noticed in your Optiplex Showdown video that the i7 cpu comparisons were missing for the 1060 and 1650 super; you showed the i5 cpus then went straight to the 1070 card, so thanks for this update on that. Love the fact you put so much work to your reviews. Keep up the great work 🤓👍
Yeah, I left the i7's out of the lower end GPU's since the performance was pretty much the same since you're limited by the GPU and not the CPU. The real benefit to the i7's over the i5's was lower CPU utilization with those cards.
I consider myself lucky. I picked up an Optiplex 9010 (i7-3770) last year for $160 (+$35 shipping). Added a GTX 970 for $75, an extra 8GB of RAM for $15 and a 550W PSU for $29. So for just over $310 shipped, I've got a really nice system that does everything I want it to, and seems to run all my games at 60 FPS or better. Thanks for your very helpful buyer's guide!
Genuinly appreciated this video!I started looking for an optiplex the last few weeks but the price has been well above what I was expecting, so this was enlightening! Also if the spirit moves you, consider a video on the other OEM options especially the Lenovo's as they appear to still be fairly priced online but there is very little information out there on their upgrade potential. Who knows you might end up making the ThinkCentre the next optiplex lol. Subbed btw.
Great advice Clint. The prices have gone crazy. Its got the the point where it makes more sense to make a entry level Ryzen system with all new parts instead.
These desktop Optiplexes are the most iconic looking PCs of the last 20 years. A sure classic. Make them near silent and you're approaching perfection.
Great videos! There is another dimension to these 7010/7020/9010/9020 3rd and 4th gen machines...they are some of the easiest Hackintosh conversion machines to put MacOS on. That may be part of the reason, why pay ~500-600 for an 10-12 year old Mac with an I5 when you can get these dells for 200 and get a closely comparable machine for half the cost and a little more of your time. I have a 7010 i7 3770 running macOS and it is a shockingly respectable machine. I would buy a 7020/9020 i7 for $200 in a second and it would make a great hackintosh.
I appreciate these videos you've been making! Several people on my channel have asked for help finding a good optiplex/HP deals for gaming etc. So from now I'm going to send them to this video since it's so dang informative! Keep up the good videos!
I recently got a really good deal on some Dell Precision T3600/T3610/T5810 workstations retired from a professional firm that used them for CAD and they are a good alternative to the Optiplexes if you are able to find them for the right price. Some advantages I see for them are: 1. You can get high core count CPUs inexpensively because the CPU socket for all these are LGA2011 and the compatible CPUs are from the Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge and Haswell generation. You can get a 4 core 8 thread CPUs that have similar specs the i7s from these generations for
Absolutely, all valid points. I just don't have any hands on experience with the 2011 systems, thus why I didn't recommend them. Perhaps I'll be able to get to them while they're still relevant. I was super late on the OptiPlex train. I will add that I bought a Precision T1700 that came with a K4200 that I managed to sell for $75. I was surprised they're still selling for that.
So I downloaded FS2020 and flew a dusk flight from Agua Dulce to Van Nuys airport and it was amazing. My monitor is an LG 1440P 75Hz monitor which is more than fine for a flight sim. The beast that is powering this brand new high end simulator? My HP Z420. A Xeon E5-1650V2 OC 4.2Ghz with 32GB 1866ghz ECC3 Quad channel. Stock 600W PSU, 500GB HD, 500GB Barracuda SSD ($66) and finally a Diamond RX 580 GPU ($95 Craigslist). FS2020 is running at a mixture of medium/high at full 1440P. The Z420 cost me $235 all in not including the SSD/GPU. So the box under the desk cost me $396 and runs all the games I want to play and I don't think that I can buy anything new that can get close to this 12 thread workstation. Here's what I did different. I looked for a local e-recycling center and bought my machine from them. I also made sure that the machine contained the right processor and memory, too many resellers pillage off lease units replacing with lower spec CPU and reducing/downgrading memory. The Xeon E5 16xxV1/2/3 processors are unlocked so you can use XTU to crudely overclock the CPU up to 4.2GHz which works fine with air cooling. The Z420 is a beast, I highly recommend it.
I'd really like to get my hands on a Z series at some point. Not really in the same price bracket as the Opti. I still feel like it's a better option for a 6th over the Opti xx40 models.
@@TheGameBench The problem with the Opti's is that by the time you've upgraded/replaced the memory and the PSU you've spent more than a carefully searched Z420. Now I have to make an omission. After the bloodbath/clusterf**k of the RTX3080 launch and the ensuing panic selling I just bought an EVGA GTX1080Ti FTW3 for $345 and now hoo boy! Destiny2 at 118FPS with everything turned to 'highest' and 1440p. Although I'm currently CAD/3D printing forced air ducts to cool the Z420 down.
This video has a lot of excellent advice. 👍✨ I wish I could of watched it before I made my purchase. I think I got a good deal for $150 USD. I got a Dell 9020 with an i7 4770, 16gb Ram, 120gb SSD+500gb HDD, Windows 10 Pro, and a Radeon HD 8490 graphics card. It may be an older PC, but it's *exactly what I need to capture PS Vita footage with OBS and edit with Davinci Resolve.* Maybe even a little Retroarch too. ✌️
You absolutely got a good deal. 9020's with i7's are still selling for over $200 pretty easily. I've even sold the GPU's that I've gotten in some of these for around $40... sometimes more. It really offsets the cost. And yeah, it would make an awesome emulation rig.
Great video! I bought an Optiplex 9020 with an i5 back in June for $240 CDN that included a 120 gig SSD. A simple 4 gig RAM upgrade to 8 gigs brought the price to just under $260 CDN excluding sales taxes and a GPU. That translates to about $200 USD (more or less). Keep in mind prices in Canada are inflated even adjusting for the exchange rate compared to the States. I already had a 430 watt Antec PSU in the parts bin so after getting a power adapter cable for the motherboard along with a 6 pin to 8 pin PCIe adapter cable I was able to install a GTX 1660 Super for $300 CDN. So I managed to build a great performing gaming PC for 560 bucks CDN which up here is considered very inexpensive given the performance. It's been working perfectly. I was skeptical at first about going with a refurb but it's turned out really well. Your advice was crucial to doing this build. Thanks! Keep the vids coming!
Dell OptiPlex 9020 MT i7-4790 3.60Ghz 32GB RAM 120GB SSD GTX 1660ti MSI Ventus XS OC edition PSU Seasonic Focus GX-650 fully modular Viewsonic XG270 27" 240hz IPS 24 to 8 power adapter I am a maximizer. Question. 1. What is the top 2 video cards before CPU becomes bottlenecked? 2. Do I have to use a dual SATA to Pcie adapter for my system and other top 2 video cards? 3. Will I need extra cooling for my rig and if so which ones for CPU/GPU? 4. Any other question I missed? I have subscribed to your channel.
Thanks! And good questions... 1. With the 4790, that depends on what settings and resolution you want to run. For 1080p, I'd say something around the 1080/2060 Super/2070/5600 XT. The 1080 Ti/2070 Super/2080/5700XT are good options for 1440p but won't really get you better performance in 1080p over the step down. There are instances, in esports titles, like CS Go, where there are exceptions and you will get higher frame rates, but most games will be about the same. 2. You shouldn't use a SATA power to PCIe power adapter with ANY of those cards due to the level of power consumption alone. But you have a great power supply that should have dedicated PCIe power connections, at least two 6+2 pin connections. No reason to be using the SATA power adapters. 3. Maybe... maybe not. Depends on how good the GPU cooler is. If you are going to add a fan, I suggest cutting the front panel for max airflow. The stock cooler on the systems is more than enough to keep the 4790 cool and there's no reason to upgrade it outside of aesthetics. 4. The one that comes to mind, since you said you're a maximizer, the 4790k will work in the 9020. However, it only really makes a difference in games like CS Go, where you're lowering the setting to play competitively, and may not be the case in all esports games. Also might make a difference in productivity workloads and video encoding. For general gaming, there's no improvement. If you did want to do it, because you're an enthusiast and you just want the best of the best, you'll want to replace the cooler. The 4790k will run a little hotter than I would want for a regular diet.
In both of your buyers guides I noticed that you didnt mention the Optiplex 790 mt. I have a DELL Optiplex 790 mt Core 17 2600 3.4GHz, 16gb(4x4gb)RAM, Win10 and a GTX 1050 ti. With this I am able to not only run games like Cyberpunk 2077 at 900p medium settings with ease but I can also use my Oculus Quest 2 to link and play PC VR gaming as well. While not at ultra settings, it runs PC VR at medium settings with ease. I am very happy until I can afford something better. LIKED
Tried looking for local listing for Dell Optiplex 7020 and that sells for 200-250 usd converted from my local currency and the 9020 sells for 300-350 usd. Those are stupid high prices for old office computers.
Not most 1070's. You could easily fit something like the Zotac 1070 mini, and there might be other models, but most are too long. This can easily be solved by removing the hard drive cage, and I have a video on how to do that, which also makes it so you can install a 140mm intake fan, which would be a very good idea with something like a 1070.
Good and insightful video. The HP G1 is also interesting, but the optiplex is nicer, crazy that everything costs a little too much. But it's probably due to some hysteria. Feel free to make more movies, I would love to watch them. Thanks
Oh... I've got a lot of Opti content lined up. Already started on the next one. I will say the Opti is slightly nicer to work with over the G1 series, but not enough to ignore that price gap. But I'll be doing a video about this 800 G1 and really dig into it.
So I have been using a single SATA power adapter with my GTX 1660 Super in an i7 Opitplex 7020. What are the risks of this? Have I been putting it in danger? I guess I will go ahead and order that double SATA adapter. Thanks
Bottlenecking it? No. Putting it at risk? Potentially. The 1660 Super doesn't draw 75 watts from the PCIe slot, and then the rest from the dedicated PCIe power. So, it's not like it's only consuming around 45 to 50 watts from the SATA power adapter. Now, like I said in the video, a single SATA power connection is rated for 54 watts and the 1660 Super will draw more than that from the SATA power. So, you're more than likely overloading that single SATA power connection, not by a lot, but it's still at risk of damaging the PSU, GPU or even catching fire. The dual SATA adapter just gives you more than enough overhead to distribute that load safely.
Bruh I was able to take home a dell optiplex 9020 (2 of them even) for free off a recycle center. One was a sff and the other is an MT. The SFF didn't come with any ram nor ssd or hdd but the mt came with everything. Both came with what is now considered a potato gpu. SFF: (after adding my own parts) i5-4590 @3.3 ghz 8gb DDR3 RAM 256 GB SSD R5-240 MT i7-4790 16 GB RAM 500 GB HDD R5-240 Both are wonderful systems.
Killer Tank the 3770 will have more room for performance as in you can do more multi task things over the 4590 due to the hyperthreading and extra threads the 3770 has
I got a opti SFF 7040 with i5-6600, 16gb ddr4 (6th gen cpu and board with max of 64gb, but not full speed ddr4), and a 128 ssd for 170. Got a 30$ semi modular 650w psu which I’m planning on 3D printing a custom mount and shroud for. I got a 1650 super 4gb for 250, so I’m pretty stoked considering recent covid prices. Hoping it’ll be a solid little 1080p machine for the next few years until I get outta school
Yeah, the main monitor is an Acer Predator X34p. It's a 34 inch 120Hz 3440x1440 curved ultrawide. The smaller monitor is nothing special. It's just a Samsung 19 inch 60 HzC22F390.
I feel like I needlessly wasted money on an Alienware Aurora 365w PSU when I should've gone for a proper 400w+ PSU w/ 8-pin connector. Out of nowhere I get weird patterns on screen then it restarts. I assume it just doesn't wanna play nice with the RX 570. Could going 6pin to 8pin be the problem here? Not the cable itself, but just not enough power being pushed through those 6 pins?
No... I wouldn't think so, unless the adapter was just poor quality. Can you see how much wattage that PSU can provide to the 12v rail(s)? It might be a 365 watt PSU, but only provides under 300 watts on the 12v, which is all the GPU uses. The certainly sounds like a GPU issue. I would also ask if you're 100% positive that the GPU isn't faulty?
@@ncrikku You can see the power supplies wattage on the sticker on the side. Hopefully it lists the combined wattage of there's more than one +12v rail. If there's only one, you can times the amperage listed for the +12v rail by 12, and you'll get the wattage on that rail. If you have more that one +12v rail, but it doesn't list the combined wattage, you can't use that trick and just add them together though.
@@TheGameBench Oh, that. I saw that but I thought you meant how much it can provide while I'm using it. As in, maybe my PSU is malfunctioning. I thought I was gonna have to buy something from home depot and do some live testing. Ok, the rails... +12VA == 14A +12VB == 18A +12VC == 11A +12VSB == 1.67A 12 x 18, right? So according to some search results, 216W should be enough for this card. It's an 8gb model so maybe a little more than the 150-200W required by the 4gb ones. Hopefully it's just a bad adapter and not one of my pricier components. Maybe you're right about the gfx card. I really didn't want that to be the problem because I know it's gonna be a PITA to return. Especially this late. Also, Newegg's known for their bad return policy.
@@ncrikku Well, you've got three 12v rails there, so you should have more than 216 watts. I would say that wattage isn't your issue, so long as it's a half decent power supply. It might be worth testing it out on a PSU tester though. Do you know if this came out of the R6 or R7? The only one I could find was 400 watts and provided 365 watts across the 12v rails. I feel like it would be a decent PSU, outside of it potentially failing. As to the GPU, yeah... Newegg's return policy isn't all that great. I haven't had a lot of problems with it, and even then... you have to ship it back and wait. Be nice if they were more like Amazon and just sent you the replacement and then charged you if you didn't send the other one back. But... it could be a bad adapter. I've used those 6-pin to 8-pin adapters on a few Nitro+ 470s, and those suckers draw a lot of juice, even for a 470, and it was never a problem.
The XE2 is great, and I have one here that I'm going to do some videos on. I didn't mention it since I have a hard time finding them for a price that really makes sense. Unless they've come down in price.
I like the ProDesk/EliteDesk systems. One of my personal systems is a 600 G1 SFF. Very comparable to the OptiPlex. As for the Thinkcentre, I don't have any hands on experience with them. What I do know is that Lenvo had a habit of whitelisting certain GPUs at the BIOS level. It's hit or miss which models they did this to. Which is kinda' why I just avoid them TBH.
Thanks for this always been interested in this kind of shit tbh. But after all of it, I think people in general would more or less be better off getting a newer system that have a better upgrade path.
Well, I think that depends. Right now, I would argue that there's no way you're going to build a new system for close to the same oney, for the same performance. You'll have to make the scrafice to use an APU, which is going to be a much worse gaming experience to come close. Also, to get close to the same price bracket, you're going to have to cut corners and buy a motherboard that will probably ruin that upgrade path.
Hello , i have on opti 3020 i5 , 4th gen , I want to use it for gaming , I live in France , so prices definitely vary as in they’re higher here for some reason , what gpu can I install to work with the box power supply, and what power supply should I get for the gpu 580 ? Thanks
For something that will 100% be fine on the stock power supply, you're looking at an RX 560 on the AMD side, and on the nVidia side you could with a lot of GPU's... the 1050/Ti, 1650/Super, 1060 3GB. Where there's a dedicated power connection, you can just use a single SATA power to PCIe adapter. With a dual SATA power to PCIe adapter, you could go with the 1060 6GB, 1660/Super/Ti. There might be some lower clocked RX 470's or 570's that will work with a dual SATA to PCIe adaper as well, but haven't been able to test any yet. The 5500 XT is also an option that I haven't tested that "MIGHT" work. For the RX 580, something like a Corsair CX450m would be fine. It doesn't need a lot of wattage, just make sure it's a decent unit. Anything with at least constant 340 watts on the 12v rail(s) will be good.
You can make Windows 11 work on your 9020, but by Microsoft's standards... it does not qualify. You need at least an 8th Gen Intel or 2nd gen Ryzen to "qualify" for Windows 11 to Microsoft's standards. As of yet, they aren't budging on that. You have until 2025 for Windows 10 to not longer be supported, so I wouldn't worry about it. By then, I think a 4th gen CPU is going to be having a pretty hard time as a gaming PC.
Very informative vid since i sell dell budget gaming pcs now ( swap cases too if the buyer can pay extra ) for 300-250$ depending on the specs here in dubai Dell Optiplex costs like 100$ or so u can find alot in used pc shop
Very nice! I wish I could find them locally for that. They pop up from time to time, but it seems I have myself to blame. Since I started flipping them, I see a lot of people trying to imitate me and if an Opti pops up for sale it's already got a GPU installed and they want $500.
The Game Bench haha same here people sell it for alot mor expensive but i dont so they usually get sold out pretty fast dubai is pc heaven specially used pc parts u can find every thing here in shops and warehouses which got recycled old pc parts

Those are some pretty good prices. You could even sell the i5 and get back some of you're money if you don't need it. I think the sell for around $50 on eBay.
@@TheGameBench I followed your suggestions on pricing and assembled the system. Its really good advice. Can you suggest a good PSU for this optiplex. I feel that the power supply will fail soon.
@@herberttorres3822 A lot of people like to go for the EVGA and ThermalTake 80+ units because they're pretty cheap. When I change out the PSU, I go for the Corsair CXm series. I've bought a HP Prodesk 600 G1 with a 320W PSU, is it possible to put a GTX 1650 Super in this build without swapping PSU? Obviously I'm going to connect it with the SATA to 6 pin adapter
Absolutely. The 320 watt in the 600 and 800 systems can supply 320 watts across the the two 12v rails and you won't even break 200 watts with the 1650 Super. That 320 watt is a pretty good unit.
hi i have 3010 MT with 3770k 1050 ti 2x8gb 1600mhz. Can i put 1660s-ti, 1070-1080, 2060 in this build also i would upgrade psu. thx. forgot to mention i have 1080p 60hz monitor would i7 be ok at that resolution whit these cards
Any of those will push past 60 FPS @ 1080p without much of a problem. There might be some games that are more CPU dependent that might struggle without some compromises.
Good luck !! I never find the prices youtubers claim to get their stuff at. Its like here look at this price for this sketchy looking listing with the least amount of ram, only 2 ram slots, no ssd, SFF case, slowest cpu and no OS. But then highlight and talk about the performance of the way more costly one.
Like I said, I don't even bother looking at the i5 systems anymore and I see the same issue here locally. For now... the i7 systems are easier to find at reasonable prices. And the 600 and 800 G1 i5 systems are still reasonable as well. Like I tell people, it just requires persistence.
@@hp5469 Absolutely. Connecting the front panel stuff presents a problem. Check out Harbin Repairs on eBay for the right adapters so you can't connect all the front panel stuff in the new case. The bigger issue is if you replace the rear fan and/or the heat sink as the Opti is pretty picky on what fans work. The only ones I've found so far that definitely work are the non RGB Corsair ML 120 Pro.
@@hp5469 I assume we're talking about a mini-tower system? If so, the motherboard mounting holes are standard micro ATX, so it will fit in any ATX or micro ATX case. As for the rear I/O sheild... it just pops out like any normal I/O plate and you can install it in the new case.
Could I just slap a rx570 8GB into a optiplex 990 with a i7 in it would it fit because I found a really good deal on ebay with the 990 i7 2600 for only 140
Absolutely. If you don't want to remove the HDD cage, it will have to be under about 9.5 inches, though it's not a hard, fast rule. It all depends on the shroud. Just be careful as you'll have to go in at an angle and run the risk of damaging the mother board with the I/O bracket on the GPU. If you're willing to remove the HDD cage, then I can't think of a 570 that won't fit. And yes, a decent 500 watt will be fine.
290wat non 80+ psu and gtx 1650 super zotac well be fine? with one sata to 6pin adapter ? for long turn or i should go for the 1650 non super and be save its only like 15$ different from 1650 and 1650 super for me
More than fine. With the 1650 Super, these systems won't consume over 200 watts. The 1650 Super is a power sipper. I will say one other thing though... the 80+ rating is an efficiency rating. It has nothing to do with quality, reliability or a the PSUs ability to provide adequate power and voltage to the components. There are a lot of garbage 80+ rated units out there.
@@TheGameBench yoo learned something new again from you thank you so much i will go for the super and much love man amazing content just upload little more :)
Thank you so much Game Bench for inspiring me to build my Optiplex 7020 project! Currently it has an i5 4590 procie and a RX570 4GB GPU. What's the i7 procie that you can recommend that works on my current MOBO? Thank you again!
We are seeing a all time high in greed on Ebay & other internet sites, consoles of all kinds & especially retro games have sky-rocketed in price making it quite discouraging to augment one's game or hardware collections, I loathe internet pirates profiting off the hard times of others. Great seeing you on YT, I sure miss your game related content bud.
I'm seeing the same trend here locally. People using eBay pricing as some guide for what they can charge. I can't keep the systems I build in for more than a week since I'm pretty much the only person here not up-charging an arm and a leg for them.
I recenly purchased an i5 3470 opti for under 100$ and an rx 570 for around 120$ off eBay. Good deals for these systems exist, you just have to watch listings for a few weeks like I did.
With enough time, sure. Not saying it's not possible, just that people are impatient and paying way too much. Just trying to help people not make that mistake.
Depends on the model. Most won't interfere with the HDD cage, but anything over about 8.5 inches will interfere with the SATA ports and even the USB3 header. But those can be addressed with low pro cables... but then the cost goes way up, so I'd stick to something shorter. TechPowerUp has a data base that gives you a good idea on length. www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-1050-ti.c2885
It seems people aren't really taking my advice then. Just take a look at my alternatives at the end and you should be able to find something more reasonable.
@@bernardschmitt6389 If you can save for a bit longer and build new, I would suggest that over one of these OEM systems. Just don't try to build for around the same money. You'll have to cut too many corners in the new system and you'll negate many of the benefits to building with a newer platform.
Agreed... don't go with the i3. It will bottleneck most modern GPUs. Unless you're buying it to do retro gaming, I'd pass up any i3s. Especially when I see them, people want over $100. You'd be better off with a 7010 or 9010 with a 3rd gen i5 at that point.

Sounds like you ended up with a really good system for the money.
What you think is a good price for a HP Elitedesk 800 G2 SFF? And I found a few low profile GPU's that should fit.. I'll most likely buy a 1660 super, is there a way to do some cooling in these cases?
Thanks! The SFF systems technically use a standard ATX screw pattern. So... it could fit in another case. However, you'll need some adapters to make it work. Which adapters, depends on the model.
So, 9 months after this video I bought a 9020 MT Optiplex (that looked new) with a fresh, legal install of Windows 10 activated, a brand new motherboard, i5 processor, new 256gb ssd, 16gb RAM and a new wifi card for $199 and free shipping. After installing a small graphics card that I had and getting the basics loaded onto my 256gb boot drive, I'm about to clone it to my new Samsung 1tb ssd. Then I'll add a 2tb HDD that I already had for backup storage. I'll save the 256 ssd for a backup boot drive in case the 1tb fails. All total I've got around $300 dollars in a practically new PC!
HP Z230, oem prebuilt with delta 400w PSU standard. Just picked up one with an i5-4590 on fleabay for 125 bucks! Saw a bunch with xeons for peanuts as well
Damn! They're really coming down in price. At $125 forget about OptiPlex. I've been wanting to get a Z series in. I'm curious though, would the drive cage block longer GPU's in the x16 slot?
@@TheGameBench The drive cages are high enough they shouldn't be an issue but cables may be a problem. I'm going to find out for sure when the foot long GTX 970 with 3 fans I bought off eBay comes. I'll also be testing if the single 6 pin on these z230s with a splitter will run the card. Kinda doubt it...
Well, the biggest downside to the xx20 model SFF systems is that the PCIe x16 slot is right next to the power supply. Luckily the x4 slot next to the CPU is open ended so you can use it for a GPU and shouldn't affect performance much on something like the 1050 Ti or 1650.
Pretty new to PC building and bought a 7010 i5-3470 DT for $100, so I thought "not bad." Recently ordered a geforce 1060 6gb mini for $145 and thought "okay I guess?" Then saw your video explaining that the default psu won't support these kinds of gpu upgrades lol... So, I'm considering selling the 7010 DT and getting one of the alternatives listed here, but would you happen to know the best gpu for a 240 watt psu?
Well... there aren't any 1060 models that will fit in the DT as it uses half height cards like the SFF systems. And honestly, the 240 watt PSU that comes in both of those is perfectly adequate for any half height GPU. Considering prices, I'd go for the 1650, preferably the newest model with GDDR6.
Hey quick question. I recently got a couple optiplex 7020s with the i7 4790s, in your video you said the power supply connectors were proprietary and needed an adapter if upgraded? How do I know what adapter I would need or where to find? Thank you
I have a dell precision t1700 with intel xeon E3 1271 v3 @3.60ghz turbo boost upto 3.99ghz, 2x ddr3 ecc ram @1600mhz, crucial 500gb sata ssd, dell oem 365 watts of power supply, and nvidia quadro k620 gpu. I want to buy a graphics card for this tower pc it has 6 pin connector for gpu. could you please recommend some gpus(give me all possible options with and without changing the power supply) for this system?
I'm thinking of rx 6400 or gtx 1650 without power supply change and rx 6600 or rtx 3060 after power supply change. Please tell me about your options which would be better fit in this system.
With the 365 watt unit, you can run pretty much any GPU that only needs a single 8-pin. No need to limit yourself to the RX 6400, which I wouldn't suggest in this system for other reasons, or the 1650... as either of those will run just fine on the 290 watt unit. All you will need is a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter, which is perfectly safe as a PCIe 6-pin connection is rated exactly the same as the 8-pin. The real limiting factor would be your CPU. Generally speaking, something on the level of a GTX 1070 is the ideal pairing with the 1271 v3/4790 at 1080p. Something on the level of the GTX 1080 is also an option, but bottlenecking due to IPC limitations becomes more of an issue, though you can still get a marked improvement over the 1070. If you want to look at a newer card, the RX 6600 is a good option and you can find those for near $120 on the used market. I think the RX 6600 is about the limit of what I would suggest with a 4th Gen i7 level CPU. The RTX 3060 would be fine on the power supply as well, and the 12GB might be appealing, but the GPU costs between $200 and $250. The 4th Gen i7 will be a pretty significant bottleneck, and the 12GB of VRAM isn't very useful useful at 1080p. There are games like The Last of Us or Resident Evil 4 that will benefit from this, but aren't advised for a 4th Gen i7 due to core limitations. If you're planning on playing at 1440p, the 3060 is an option. The only reason to upgrade the power supply is if you wanted to run something older, and more power hungry, like the 980, 980 Ti or 1080 Ti, which you'd just be better off going with the RX 6600 in the end.
First of all I really appreciate you for taking out your time for answering my question. I have a 1080p 165 hz monitor and I play only fortnite in 1080p resolution in performance mode. Furthermore, my usage is only web browsing, watching videos and playing fortnite on weekends. Is it safe to use rx 6600 without psu upgrade which I am getting for 100 dollars in used market. I read some reddit threads, they warned me about spikes in GPUs and could potentially fry the GPU. So is it possible to use rx 6600 without any power supply change. Mine is a dell OEM psu with 80+ gold 365 watts.
Sure... but you can build one of these business systems out for around the same money with a dedicated GPU. Plus, with that APU, to get down to $350, you'd have to cut corners to the level that the board you'd be paring with it would completely ruin the biggest reason to go with a Ryzen system... the upgrade path.
@@TheGameBench the asrock desk mini has a case, psu and mobo for only 150. You could really get it down to 300 I just added the 50 for a bit of working room.
@@joeschratz9360 Sure, but it uses an APU. For gaming, it will never outperform one of these with a dedicated GPU. The Desk Mini is a very narrow use case. Playing intensive modern PC games isn't part of that.
Yeah, I've tested the 4790K in several systems and have yet to have to update the BIOS. Outside of some issue with the CPU socket or a really old BIOS, I don't see a reason it wouldn't work at this point.
Yeah, it depends on where you look, but I think demand for OptiPlex systems is waning as demand stars to drop off since building a new system with an i3 that will waste the 4790 is pretty cheap these days. As an alternative, you could look for the HP Elite Desk 600/800 G1 or G2. They weren't as popular as the OptiPlex, but have a better power supply, bigger case, and they can typically be found cheaper.

@@will32107 No worries. If you're serious about editing, at 1080p, the 4790 is a pretty good option. But there are some things you'll want to change. I would run 16GB of RAM at minimum. As your projects get bigger, 32GB might be needed. I would get a boot SSD and I would also use it for editing, unless you can afford a second SSD to use a scratch drive just for editing off of. You don't want to edit off a hard drive, and don't skimp on the SSD. Get at least one with TLC NAND, do NOT get a QLC drive as it would live a short life editing off of. Luckily, neither of those are very expensive. A couple of more 4GB sticks is going to be like $20 or so, and a 250GB TLC NAND SSD should be around $25 to $30. Now, resolve will mostly use your CPU, but it will use the GPU as well, so any 10 series GTX card will be good. If you end up paying for Resolve it will use the GPU a lot more and has better codecs and will run much smoother.
Hi, which PSU would you recommend me for my 7020 with a I5-4570?, I can't go for a I7 one because I don't have the enough money for it, I'm actually planning to get for it a Single Fan Asus GTX 1050 TI GPU.
I'd suggest just using the power supply that comes in the 7020. With the 1050 Ti, even ones that require dedicated power, you won't come close to breaking 200 watts total power consumption, from the outlet. The stock 290 watt will be more than fine.
@@tashi7911 Same power supply as the 7020, and the i7 will increase power consumption by about 20 watts or so. Not enough to matter. And the i7 will be fine with the 1650 and leave you a lot of room to upgrade the GPU down the road.

I'd say $135 right now is a good price for a 6GB 1060.

That may be part of the reason, why pay ~500-600 for an 10-12 year old Mac with an I5 when you can get these dells for 200 and get a closely comparable machine for half the cost and a little more of your time. I recently got a really good deal on some Dell Precision T3600/T3610/T5810 workstations retired from a professional firm that used them for CAD and they are a good alternative to the Optiplexes if you are able to find them for the right price. Some advantages I see for them are:
I wish I could of watched it before I made my purchase.
I think I got a good deal for $150 USD.
I got a Dell 9020 with an i7 4770, 16gb Ram, 120gb SSD+500gb HDD, Windows 10 Pro, and a Radeon HD 8490 graphics card.
It may be an older PC, but it's *exactly what I need to capture PS Vita footage with OBS and edit with Davinci Resolve.*
Maybe even a little Retroarch too.
That's awesome! I love seeing comments like yours. They make putting the time into making these videos truly worth it. I'm so happy I could help.

I am a maximizer. Question.
Yeah, that's not even close to worth it. That's $50 shy of what I sell them for with a GPU, SSD and 16GB of RAM.
Can a 9020 case fit most of the good VR cards? 1070 or above? God I wish this info was a little easier to find. Thx!
@@TheGameBench Thank you, I look forward to it with great interest. Your videos are always accurate and good.
@@TheGameBench Thanks, I appreciate the help.
Bruh I was able to take home a dell optiplex 9020 (2 of them even) for free off a recycle center. One was a sff and the other is an MT. The SFF didn't come with any ram nor ssd or hdd but the mt came with everything. Both came with what is now considered a potato gpu.
SFF: (after adding my own parts)
i5-4590 @3.3 ghz
8gb DDR3 RAM
256 GB SSD
R5-240
MT
i7-4790
16 GB RAM
500 GB HDD

Both are wonderful systems.
just waiting for the next videos.. great work. I want to be sure I got it right. the i7 3770 is still a better cpu against the i5 4950?
I'm preety sure it is
yes you will have better multi core performance and less gpu bottleneck
the i7's are much more expensive however, and you will get better performance per dollar from the i5 4950
I got a old optplex with i5 2400 in it. I i can get the 3770 for around $50.
Killer Tank the 3770 will have more room for performance as in you can do more multi task things over the 4590 due to the hyperthreading and extra threads the 3770 has
Thank you
You're welcome!
What is the size of the monitor at your back...and what are the models pls
Yeah, the main monitor is an Acer Predator X34p. It's a 34 inch 120Hz 3440x1440 curved ultrawide. The smaller monitor is nothing special. It's just a Samsung 19 inch 60 HzC22F390.
I recently bought 3 i5 optis for $319 as a way to get a cheap esxi cluster going. So far, this looks good.
Thanks for the insight. You're my go to information source for this kind of stuff.
Thanks! I really appreciate that.
As always, very informative and enjoyable! Great video!
I never spend more than 100 on an Optiplex, usually closer to 50. You need an i7, so you’re going to have to upgrade unless it comes with one.
Yeah, I don't like spending more than about $100 on the i5 systems. Less if it's a 2nd or 3rd gen.
@@TheGameBench How do I check wattage? As for the GPU, right now I have no way of knowing. I can try borrowing a PC tomorrow to test it on.
+12VA == 14A
+12VB == 18A
+12VC == 11A
+12VSB == 1.67A
12 x 18, right?
No love for the Optiplex XE2?
The XE2 is great, and I have one here that I'm going to do some videos on. I didn't mention it since I have a hard time finding them for a price that really makes sense. Unless they've come down in price.
Also what's your opinion on hp prodesk and elite desk and lenovo's thinkcentre ?
I like the ProDesk/EliteDesk systems. One of my personal systems is a 600 G1 SFF. Very comparable to the OptiPlex. As for the Thinkcentre, I don't have any hands on experience with them. What I do know is that Lenvo had a habit of whitelisting certain GPUs at the BIOS level. It's hit or miss which models they did this to. Which is kinda' why I just avoid them TBH.
Can you do another update knowing what we know today.
Anything with at least constant 340 watts on the 12v rail(s) will be good.
would u mention which dell's qualify for windows 11..i have optiplex 9020 which barely qualifies

That 320 watt is a pretty good unit.

forgot to mention i have 1080p 60hz monitor would i7 be ok at that resolution whit these cards
Any of those will push past 60 FPS @ 1080p without much of a problem. There might be some games that are more CPU dependent that might struggle without some compromises.
Found my daughter a gateway dx4831 for $10.00 it's a I3, 6gb of ram, and 1tb HDD. Works great and it's upgradable.
@@TheGameBench I've got 2 optiplex builds. Can these be transferred to other cases ?
@@hp5469 Absolutely. Connecting the front panel stuff presents a problem. Check out Harbin Repairs on eBay for the right adapters so you can't connect all the front panel stuff in the new case.

Depends on the model. Most won't interfere with the HDD cage, but anything over about 8.5 inches will interfere with the SATA ports and even the USB3 header. Agreed... don't go with the i3. It will bottleneck most modern GPUs. Unless you're buying it to do retro gaming, I'd pass up any i3s. Especially when I see them, people want over $100. You'd be better off with a 7010 or 9010 with a 3rd gen i5 at that point.

@@Kalzzin no problem dude, don't get scammed, shits wild out there. I'm in a village area, and I can't fing pcs with reasonable prices. Like a guy is asking 250 dollars where I am for an i5 2nd gen, and he's the only one selling. Sad.
what is the difference between 7020 and the 9020
As far as I can tell, the only difference is vPro, which doesn't matter for a gaming machine.
Just won on a 7020 with a i5 4690 for $69!!! Will be here Monday. 95 bucks all in with shipping. Have a 1050ti OC ready for it.
Damn! People usually want obscene prices for systems with the 4690. Awesome score man!
@@TheGameBench thanks to you! Your guides set me up for success. The case has some minor cosmetic issues. Seems to have been dropped when new. Speaking of new. This pc was never put in to use! The guts are spotless and the thermal paste was like new. It only has 4gb but I already have 8gb ram for it. I went ahead and removed the drive cage per your instructions. What a mod! Clean bay. Final specs, I5 4690, WIN 10 PRO, 500gb Baracuda SSD, 8gb PNY DDR3 1600mhz, Gigabyte Geforce 1050ti OC edition. What do you think?
Thanks again for all the info. Great channel.
@@Lateralgrip I'm really glad my videos could help. I've gotten a couple of those where they're like new on the inside. I was working on a 3020 today that still had the plastic wrap all over the front. Gotten a few that definitely had been dropped and had to do some metal work to em'. Sounds like you ended up with a really good system for the money.
What you think is a good price for a HP Elitedesk 800 G2 SFF? And I found a few low profile GPU's that should fit.. I'll most likely buy a 1660 super, is there a way to do some cooling in these cases?
Would a 10.7inch long GPU fit in an Optiplex?
With the hard drive cage in? Nope. If you remove the hard drive cage, 10.7 inches is not problem.
I got a 3010 for 70 bucks with an i3 by I have a compatible i5 here at home from an old pc I got from my work
Is it possible to put a i3 8100 cpu in a dell optiplex 990 ?
Nope, the only CPUs you can put in a 990 are Sandy Bridge 2nd gen CPUs.
If i got a sff optiplex/cheap oem pc, took out the parts, and put it in a new case with a new psu would that work? Also, great vid btw.
@@TheGameBench
The drive cages are high enough they shouldn't be an issue but cables may be a problem. I'm going to find out for sure when the foot long GTX 970 with 3 fans I bought off eBay comes. I'll also be testing if the single 6 pin on these z230s with a splitter will run the card. Kinda doubt it...
this the one i bought Dell Optiplex 7020 SFF i5-4570 3.2GHz 8GB RAM 1 TB HDD Windows 10 Pro is it good? i spent $125 on it
Well, the biggest downside to the xx20 model SFF systems is that the PCIe x16 slot is right next to the power supply.
I was lucky to buy a Dell Optiplex 7010 TOWER on eBay for $137.00 US. Comes with an Intel Core i5, 16 GB Ram, and 2 TB HDD.
I want to buy a graphics card for this tower pc
it has 6 pin connector for gpu.
could you please recommend some gpus(give me all possible options with and without changing the power supply) for this system?
the processor is 4 core 8 threads and got it for 130 dollars
I'm thinking of rx 6400 or gtx 1650 without power supply change
and rx 6600 or rtx 3060 after power supply change.
Great Video , very informative !.
Thanks!
I got a 7020 with i7, 12 gb ram and 500 gb ssd for $150
Personally I would highly suggest a desk mini with a ryzen 5 apu. This is really cheap amd it can hame game for around 350 USD.
Sure... but you can build one of these business systems out for around the same money with a dedicated GPU.
Did you ever test if the i7 4790k works in an optiplex 9020? If so, did u have to update the bios? Thanks again!
Yeah, I've tested the 4790K in several systems and have yet to have to update the BIOS. Outside of some issue with the CPU socket or a really old BIOS, I don't see a reason it wouldn't work at this point.
i see these prices everywhere, even 1st gen are way expensive than 6th gen lol
Yeah, it depends on where you look, but I think demand for OptiPlex systems is waning as demand stars to drop off since building a new system with an i3 that will waste the 4790 is pretty cheap these days. As an alternative, you could look for the HP Elite Desk 600/800 G1 or G2. They weren't as popular as the OptiPlex, but have a better power supply, bigger case, and they can typically be found cheaper.
Hpz420 are perfect. They come with a 600w power supply.
Yeah, the Z series is great, just a lot more expensive than the Opti, but they're a full on workstation.
@@TheGameBench yea before covid, They were easy to get. I used to get an hpz420 with a e5 1650v2 with a 16gb with a 1tb hard for 200$ . Put in a rx570 or gtx 1650s super and u are set
Hey In the background of the beginning of the video, is that the super Mario Bros 3 bead pattern kit? Idk why I'm pointing it out, but I have it too and it looks sick!
Not sure about that. One of my nieces and nephews made that, and some other bead patterns, for me. Not sure if they used a kit of not, but I believe it's meant to be Raccoon Mario from SMW. I'll have to show them this comment. They'll love it.
@@TheGameBench lol I'm not sure why I pointed that out, I just as it and was like "oh he I have that!" Lol
What about for non-gaming? I want to be able to stream using OBS (showing my camera plus sharing my screen) while using Chrome/RUclips. Ideally would be able to do some simple video editing (not at the same time) but that’s a nice to have. Could these builds work?
What resolution do you want to edit at? 1080p or 4k?
@@TheGameBench Sorry, just saw this now! 1080p. Also I did end up buying an Optiplex 9020 from eBay. Here are the specs it came with if that helps. All I have done so far is add a wireless card (TP-link AC1200 Archer T5E), and I'm deciding what further updates to make and in what order or priority.

@@TheGameBench Thank you so much! I've saved this and will follow this / refer back to it as I'm upgrading.
Def not for an i5 but for an i7 with 16gb ram and a terabyte hdd, ill drop upwards of 300
Hi, which PSU would you recommend me for my 7020 with a I5-4570?, I can't go for a I7 one because I don't have the enough money for it, I'm actually planning to get for it a Single Fan Asus GTX 1050 TI GPU.
I'd suggest just using the power supply that comes in the 7020. With the 1050 Ti, even ones that require dedicated power, you won't come close to breaking 200 watts total power consumption, from the outlet. The stock 290 watt will be more than fine.
Thanks man.
@@tashi7911 Sure thing.
Well, I could get a Optiplex 9020 with the I7-4770 could that one work with a GTX 1650 SUPER
@@tashi7911 Same power supply as the 7020, and the i7 will increase power consumption by about 20 watts or so. Not enough to matter. And the i7 will be fine with the 1650 and leave you a lot of room to upgrade the GPU down the road.
You get a thumbs up, mainly for no add revenue. RUclips is out of control these days
Honestly, I make about $100 a month right now on ad revenue. I don't feel like it's too bad considering I don't run ads in the middle of the end of the video, just the skipable ones at the start. Especially with my views level. But, every little bit helps. I appreciate in man!
