I really need to look more into the modern Optiplex systems. The only thing I don’t like is you can’t really replace PSUs. They are built more proprietary than the older systems.
@@PCTechHustle I think I've seen a video where someone took an SFF (SFX?) power supply and was able to fit it into the newer Optiplex chassis. But I just stuck with a video card that ran off the PCIE slot.

I had a 7010 MT at my work back in 2011, and it was an expensive PC at the time. These things are high miles, and still holding strong because they were top of the line back then. In 2011 an i7 and 32 gb of ram was overkill for everything.

Right now - I am running a 9020 MT with i7-4790 and an RX 560 4gb. I did end up getting a new PSU and eventually will get a different graphics card. But it has a sata ssd for boot and an HDD for storage. Runs fortnite and overwatch 2 (which are the games my wife likes to play) just fine
My first gaming pc was a 2008(ish) gateway desktop with an amd phenom triple core processor @1.8ghz. It was a $300 at the time and spent and extra $150 on an additonal 2gb ram, 500 watt psu, and a Nvidia 9800gt. Thousands of hours of World of Warcraft were played on that machine...
Did this also added 1tb ssd,600 watt psu, a gtx 970 I had lying around and add two sticks kit 8gb memory. For under 200 including the price of the desktop. Put it together to play at work for my lunch hour, when I don't feel like going home for lunch.
This is really cool and great advice ive used desktops and some gaming laptops over the years I'm thinking doing something similar for my first proper build
I did a similar build to this, the optiplex had a little better of a cpu, it turned out to like 160 dollars. I can't lie, this thing runs better than my prebuilt hp pavilion. the pavilion has like 400k items on the registry, has an rx 550, and no ssd, but the cpu and ram are better. However, I HIGHLY recommend this build. I spent pocket change on it, and it runs better than my friends PC which cost 10 times as much. It is more than I expected. Additionally, this thing does not even break a sweat running any of my games, when most PCs would heat up a little bit or get louder. This one sounds like it's off no matter what it's running. Incredible.
Some things you need to watch out for that were not mentioned in this video that I have run into doing this same thing. 1) All of your business-type PC built during this and even later generations (like Dell, HP and Lenovo) are completely "proprietary" in design meaning the ability of using after market components on these systems is very limited - example, many Dell PC's use completely proprietary power supplies and many of the older systems power connector "pin outs" were not compatible with the standard ATX power supplies. I learned this the hard way. Even though the main power connector looks exactly the same, it's wired completely different so make sure an ATX unit will work in your model. 2) Make sure whatever system you use for an upgrade has all the latest updated device drivers and system BIOS version installed BEFORE you start tweaking the system and adding things. These can be found on most manufacturer's web sites as well as system specs and upgrade path as well. This goes for the latest Windows 10 version as well. These older systems will not load Windows 11. 3) Most of these dated systems do not include Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections so you'll be required to add a wi-fi card or dongle of some kind and will not be compatible with the latest connection standards like 802.11ax and so on so your connection speeds will be stuck at 2.4GHz. 4) These older system are also limited to DDR3 RAM and USB 3.0 and the bus speeds are locked as well so there is no real over-clocking capability on these systems. 5) Once these older systems are maxed out your "upgrade path" becomes almost non-existent and the further we go into the future there is a real possibility your "budget" build will be obsolete and unusable. That's something to keep in mind. 6) With used PC component prices coming down I highly recommend saving a little more money and building a system from scratch. I built a 7th Gen Intel 7700K system with a used Asrock Z270 mainboard, 16GB of DDR4 2400 RAM, an 8GB EVGA GTX 1080 GPU, a 256GB NVMe M.2 drive, a 2TB HDD storage drive pulled from another system, 5 RGB 120MM fans with controller, a new Cougar mesh tower case, used 650watt platinum rated modular power supply (but no wi-fi) for just under $575 total. It will play any game I load on it at medium or low settings (1080p) AND, I have no upgrade limitations at all.
I haven't had to deal with Dell for over a decade, but I recall that some of their PCs - especially the smaller ones - could not provide 75W over the PCIe bus.
I have an HP ProDesk 400 g2.5 motherboard I am dealing with (I know it's not dell, but I use it for the same purpose as I do old Dells) and it is not 75w for the CPU. Can't run an i5-4570.
I got the same exact Optiplex but mine is a 790 with i7 9700. I added 16 gb ram totaling 32gb and plugged in a 1050ti. Swapped out the hard drive for an ssd.
😄🎮I’m glad I found this! I just purchased a optiplex build with Intel i7 and an AMD rx 550 16gb ram 2tb hard drive. @@PCTechHustle appreciate it man. I bought a 9020 without the intention to game on it and after watching your video I want to max it out, give it to my son, and get myself a proper setup 😂
Basically, yes. Though I have heard but cannot confirm the 3020 models deliver less than 75w to the slot, unlike the 7020s and 9020s. Not sure entirely on that though.
It will work, but that i5 is quite a bit lesser of a CPU than the 4590. You should still be able to play easier to run titles though. Expect less performance than what you see here.
@@PCTechHustle - You won't see much difference with such a weak card unless you stream or record while you play on the same machine. My GTX 1070 was only £116 on ebay last November with a triple fan cooler, relatively low power draw at 150w tdp so no need to go overkill on a new PSU.
Ya know that you can keep the latch option with a simple mod on the MT style 9010/20, 3010/20 and all you have to do is notch the lower left corner of the plastic catch that moves. I cut a 1/2 x 1/2 inch chunk out with a hacksaw blade and my full size PSU squeezed right by and into place and the side cover latches in place like it should still.
@@PCTechHustle it's a neat trick to show newbs how to keep the door on factory style. If I was a creator I would have my own video showing how to do it.

I want to upgrade my GPU for some 3D modeling and light gaming, but I'm trying not to mess with the power supply. I'm looking at the GTX 1650 GPU as an upgrade. Is that a good candidate for not going over my power supply and still being able to do some 3D modeling and gaming? Or is it a better idea to upgrade the power supply as well as the GPU?
found a dell optiplex 990 MT for $68 with shipping and taxes included, has a i5-2400, 4 gb, and i have a RX 550 2 gb and a 2 TB hdd already. I’m not playing any crazy AAA game that needs powerful components. its gonna be somewhat temporary. should i buy it or save another $200 for parts to build one?
4:22 im guessing they still do this hting where the main ATX line is an 8 pin eh? that is honestly the most obnoxious thing about taking up one of these system imho. sure you ccan get an adapter, but its unnecessarily janky and not something i'd trust on a higher wattage supply.
Just run the drives, graphics card (if it needs added power cable) and everything but the motherboard directly off the new power supply. The 8 pin adapters can only pass a certain current max. I'm going to inspect my adapter carefully before putting it in service. I don't want any motherboard crispy circuits.
You will be much more limited by PSU, Ram Slots and Sata connectors depending on the Dell DT models, PCIE slot powered cards like the RX550, Nvidia 1650 and 1660 without external power connectors are also good choices for DT or SFF. Both of those style will need Low Profile Graphics cards though.
I’m not sure what even Lightroom is but for photoshop id say probably not but could potentially be okay with a CPU and GPU upgrade. Photoshop can be quite demanding on hardware
if you get the chance to, could you please run this setup with a RX-470 8gb and 16gb of ram. i have found a deal where i am able to purchase these extra parts with no extra cost and would like to know if it can handle warzone in 1080 normal. thanks very much for the videos!
Almost none of them come with HDDs. However you can just buy a cheap $30 SSD and install windows on it and you are good! Windows will already be activated to the motherboard.
Believe it or not. Leaving that psu as is shot your performance. The stutters in those triple a games would be very rare l. I’ve been running this build for about 4 years now, biggest upgrade you can make is a good power supply and some more cooling, this hardware is very capable with the right supports holding it up.
I did do a follow up video using a 6600XT which I feel paired pretty well. If you go older generation I’d say a GTX 1060/1070 or rx 580 would be a good pairing as well

Yep, solid 1080p, 60fps with decent setting if you get a decent GPU.
@@theHardwareBench I have the gtx 1050 Ti, it is actuallly worth it, because I dont care for crappy optimized games like foresaken
i have a question, can i use a areo msi 1030 gpu too?
Yes you can but the gaming experience would not be all that great.
Is dell optiplex 5050 good
It’s not bad but will have a lot of proprietary features to it that will prevent upgrades like this.
@@PCTechHustle I have seen videos were they changed psus in Dell optiplex 5050 and placed a new Gpu
you think you could stream on this?
Only stream? Or stream and play?
@@PCTechHustle stream and play
nice, what about the Rx 570 single fan does that rub of the MB?
That should work completely fine!
@@PCTechHustle thx i try it before i upgrade the psu.
Keep in mind it might require a bit more power than a 560 but you can absolutely test figment
one thing i'd do for peace of mind is new thermal paste. wouldn't the rx 6400 perform better?
Always good to redo thermal paste! No the RX 6400 wouldn’t be a great idea because of the reduced PCI-e lanes it utilizes. It gets very bad on PCI-e 3.0 slots like in this system.
Can this setup run iracing??
I used to strapped a ThinkCentre M900 Tower with i7-6700, 16GBDDR4 8*8 Dual 2133Mhz, Crucial 1T SATA SSD & GTX 980 back in 2015/2016... I say, It's a great way for budget build... So I approved... Cheers!! 🍻🍻🍻
Nice! I’ll have to check out Think Centres!
@@PCTechHustle you should whenever is convenient for you... Optiplex is great but nobody talks bout Think Centre as much as Dell's... Soo yeah... Do make a vid... I'm curious to see the result... Cheers! 🍻💯
What is the power supply here??
The stock unit the Dell comes with
What wifi card adapter are using if gpu is blocking
You can get a pci adapter or even a usb for around $20-30
Can you do a video for a pimped out optiplex 9020 MT?
I’m open for ideas! I still have this on me!
@@PCTechHustle appreciate it man. I bought a 9020 without the intention to game on it and after watching your video I want to max it out, give it to my son, and get myself a proper setup 😂
do the same things work with other models such as the 3020?
Basically, yes. Though I have heard but cannot confirm the 3020 models deliver less than 75w to the slot, unlike the 7020s and 9020s. Not sure entirely on that though.
Great video helped a lot, but does the rx 560 work for the dell optiplex Intel i5 2400 quad?
It will work, but that i5 is quite a bit lesser of a CPU than the 4590. You should still be able to play easier to run titles though. Expect less performance than what you see here.
I have that build. Put it together about 6 months ago. Mine has the I7 4790. a 4g RX560 An 512 SSD and 16g memory.
Nice! Yeah I really want to put in an i7 4790 now and see the difference!
@@PCTechHustle - You won't see much difference with such a weak card unless you stream or record while you play on the same machine. My GTX 1070 was only £116 on ebay last November with a triple fan cooler, relatively low power draw at 150w tdp so no need to go overkill on a new PSU.
Can you recommend an upgraded power supply for this and on a separate note for T1650?
Stay tuned I have a video releasing tomorrow that talks about just that!
Yeah I was thinking I would do as an option as well
@@PCTechHustle it's a neat trick to show newbs how to keep the door on factory style. If I was a creator I would have my own video showing how to do it.
What makes the Optiplex the right computer to convert? Why not others?
It works out so well because they are verbally very cheap to pick up as a full system and support standard ATX components for simple upgrading.
I want to play my old games from disc... Rome total war and gta 3 and age of empires.. can this machine run those games stock ? Just windows 7 and the Dell opiplex i5 as is? Those games are from 2001-2006
Oh absolutely!
Will it run with Dell Optiplex 960?
back on the potato Inspiron i used to game on, i would consider 20fps playable with a very simmilar card to the one that was pre included in this one. that comouter came with an hd 6450. it also came with a power supply that had a pci power plug on it so i plan on upgrading it soon
I found a steal for a dell optiplex 7040 1tb with I5 6500. I really want to put a rx5500 into it, would you recommend it?
Should be fine though I wonder if that HDD is a mechanical or ssd
@@PCTechHustle ssd, thanks for the second opinion
can u please make a upgrade video of hp 280 g3 mt.
I'll look into those for sure!
Let's go!!!!
You know it!
what's the best power supply for a 7020 dell OptiPlex I'm gonna put a 1660 super in mine
Check the description, I added some links for PSUs I recommend.
I got a Corsair CX550 brand new for £50 in the UK for my 3020 Optiplex. Easily enough for my GTX 1070, £116 used on ebay.
Does it run win 10 or 7
10
How good is this PC with no mods?
How do you know if the graphics card is going to need more of a power source and if it will work with this build? Because I was thinking about buying a AMD Radeon RX560 4 GB Phantom Gaming Graphics Card
Always look up the card and it's power requirements first. Some RX 560s don't require supplemental power like you see here in this video some will.
sameee prp bro
I have an optiplex 9020 with an i7 4770 CPU, 32 GB RAM, 290W power supply, and an Intel HD Graphics 4600 GPU.
A 1650 would be perfect for that type of application.
@@PCTechHustle Thank you! So no power supply upgrade is needed?
Nope, not with a 1650
Will this set up run grand tactician the civil war?
Would I be able to use the 2gb Aero gpu? I'm on a really low budget.
You could but don’t expect amazing performance.

what graphics card should I get if I want to stream on RUclips or Twitch with my Ps5 from a cheap dedicated streaming PC?
I would probably try to get like a cheap 8gig card of some sort.

Do we need to download graphic drivers for the graphic card manually after installing it?
Yes! Always best to get the latest driver after a hardware install.
is it possibel to remove those letters and numbers at the side ?
Any problem using the default 240W power supply? I bought a 7040MT and an RX 560 to do this exact thing, but want to make sure it’s safe
You should be completely fine!
What ram should I get for this pc
Check the video description where I have that linked.
found a dell optiplex 990 MT for $68 with shipping and taxes included, has a i5-2400, 4 gb, and i have a RX 550 2 gb and a 2 TB hdd already. I’m not playing any crazy AAA game that needs powerful components. its gonna be somewhat temporary. should i buy it or save another $200 for parts to build one?
That is a pretty good deal! If you are looking to just get into gaming now, I’d say it’s worth it.
@@PCTechHustle alright
Will DDR3 bottleneck a this setup if I put in a gtx970? thanks!
Nah!
would the xfx version be ok to use
Can I replace the dell optiplex with a thermaltake core p3 case and use the same parts that came with the optiplex computer
You can, might look kinda funny but you can. I have a video in the end screen playlist that covers doing an optiplex case swap. Check it out!
Thx
4:22 im guessing they still do this hting where the main ATX line is an 8 pin eh?
that is honestly the most obnoxious thing about taking up one of these system imho. sure you ccan get an adapter, but its unnecessarily janky and not something i'd trust on a higher wattage supply.
Just run the drives, graphics card (if it needs added power cable) and everything but the motherboard directly off the new power supply. The 8 pin adapters can only pass a certain current max. I'm going to inspect my adapter carefully before putting it in service. I don't want any motherboard crispy circuits.
Will the gpu fit a dell 3060 sff
Is the desktop version of optiplex upgradeable similarly to the mini tower version?
You will be much more limited by PSU, Ram Slots and Sata connectors depending on the Dell DT models, PCIE slot powered cards like the RX550, Nvidia 1650 and 1660 without external power connectors are also good choices for DT or SFF. Both of those style will need Low Profile Graphics cards though.
is it good for photoshop and lightroom?
I’m not sure what even Lightroom is but for photoshop id say probably not but could potentially be okay with a CPU and GPU upgrade. Photoshop can be quite demanding on hardware
Optiplex 9020 + rx 560 is good ? its happening in the pc?
if you get the chance to, could you please run this setup with a RX-470 8gb and 16gb of ram. i have found a deal where i am able to purchase these extra parts with no extra cost and would like to know if it can handle warzone in 1080 normal. thanks very much for the videos!
You couldn’t probably have a decent experience on low settings with that card.
Why u do'nt make your life easy and type in ytb searchbar rx470 warzone?!?
is it fine to buy one from ebay with no HDD/OS? its the Optiplex 9020 i7-4770, 16gb RAM for $61
Almost none of them come with HDDs. However you can just buy a cheap $30 SSD and install windows on it and you are good! Windows will already be activated to the motherboard.
@@PCTechHustle thanks, i’ve never got a pc before especially from ebay
Hey did you pay 50 dollars of the OptiPlex? Even the one with no Hdd no OS? If so should I do as well or look for a better quality OptiPlex

This is a bit of bias due to this is American pricing here in Canada close is 300 to 325
That’s nuts! I can’t believe these old systems still going for so much!
Believe it or not. Leaving that psu as is shot your performance. The stutters in those triple a games would be very rare l. I’ve been running this build for about 4 years now, biggest upgrade you can make is a good power supply and some more cooling, this hardware is very capable with the right supports holding it up.

its 4th gen so for an example Core i5 4690 Core i7 4770

It’s newer and has a better CPU but upgrading GPUs is quite difficult as it’s smaller and has non-upgradable power supply

Could the 9020 handle a rx 570?
You would need a power supply upgrade but yes it could!
What kind of cables would i need if i installed a rx 580 into a optiplex 7010 mt?
You would need to drop in a higher wattage PSU. Check out my latest Optiplex video for guidance on that. You also want to make sure the card is not too long otherwise you will run into clearance issues with the HDD cage.
