I have flown nearly 2 million miles on United now over a decade. Their reward points program and the overall value of their points has done nothing but deteriorate over the last few years. The points almost seem worthless.
I’ve been a United 1k for the past 10 years. They have DEFINITELY DEVALUED these miles. I think just about 8 years ago, you used to be able to go business class to Europe for 50k miles. Asia 60k, and SE Asia for 70k miles. Then they switched to DYNAMIC pricing. Now sometimes it’s 495k miles each way to SE asia. Total BS
It’s not a dollar though it’s not you earning a dollar because of something you did it’s just them giving you something for free and if they want to give you something for free, they can literally turn around and say well that thing we gave you for free it’s worth more money or it’s worth less money. It’s worth less, worth zero dollars at all right now. Remember this was a gift you didn’t pay for it. It was a gift. It was not part of the transaction. It was a gift to hopefully get you to fly again and a gift can be given to you, and it can be taken away from you. These companies don’t owe you anything for flying with them. They are just doing this to compete with one another but if you push them too far all of them will get together and take away the gift. Now you won’t get anything when you fly these airlines and then you’ll just be standing there looking stupid, wondering what it was like when you used to get a gift
Not exactly correct to say it is a gift because airlines today also sell these points in case you need some to book a flight. Many airlines today use dynamic pricing even with points. Gone were the days when the required points were fixed. For example 80,000 points from Chicago to Tokyo on business class. At any given day, depending on the hour, whether it id a direct flight or not, the required points necessary may be more, maybe less. As far as booking with points are concerned. First, the real value for these points are if you book only business class or higher. Forget short haul flights, you are just wasting points as far as I am concerned. Secondly, it is best to shop months in advance to find the best deal and successfully book a flight.
Aside from the actual miles, the policies in themselves are very important. Purchasing is sometimes limited by amount, I.e. u cannot purchase less than 2000 miles. Other conditions are also important such and transfers and the fees that are charged. If you think this a gift, you are clearly not understanding how points work. No company gives continuous “gifts” for nothing, it all has value.
What a relief
