Money Talks: How United Airlines lost $1 billion after bumping passenger

- Опубликовано: 26 сен 2024
- Video of a passenger being dragged off a United Airlines' plane screaming and bleeding, is costing the airline dearly. United's shares are down about four percent - slashing about a billion dollars off its market value. A billion dollars wiped out for the sake of a few seats on a plane from Chicago to Kentucky. Joining us to talk about this story from New York is Sean O'Neill, he's from the global travel industry intelligence website Skift. And from Paris our editor at large, Craig Copetas. Also Andre Pierre du Plessis joins us for a look at some of the more creative reactions on social media.

3-4% drop in shares isn't nearly enough. This airline should be boycotted to the point of no return. Let them go out of business. Let other companies with more ethics take up the slack.
if not, the least punishment they could get from asia is taking some of united new aircraft away and also paying 2bil
Yeah I agree, but still they have got assets & cashflows
Other airlines will need them. Boycotting them is the only way to stop this behavior. Also, UA might wise-up if they see that their profit margin is collapsing because of it and change their tactics.
@@p_d_a_trfs6585Liberal modernists and feminists will feign outrage, but their moral system is what creates this situation.
Liberal principles of individual choice, female empowerment, and destruction of patriarchy create a society of people who have no family to take care of them in their old age.
The liberal feminist solution to this problem is to create more welfare programs. What this means is that they want the elderly to live alone in what are essentially pods, their only human interaction being with "care" takers to check if they're still alive once a week.
Let me put it like this. The only human solution is for the elderly to be surrounded by loving family in their old age. The only way to get that is patriarchy, gender roles, and other limitations on individual freedom. But the liberal mind cannot allow any of that. So the elderly will continue to suffer and liberal feminists and modernists will continue to pretend like they care about humanity.
No, cause I work there
Thank you for the passengers that recorded this incident. It could have easily been a he said, she said situation and they would've never been held accountable.
COMPARE THESE TWO ARGUMENTS
"Islam endorses war (jihad) to impose its law (Sharia) across the world. Therefore Islam approves killing people across the world. Muslims are dangerous - your Muslim neighbor literally wants to knife your little daughter and then blow up the local McDonalds."
_"Liberalism endorses war (e.g., colonialism, humanitarian intervention, military occupation) to impose its law (international human rights law) across the world. Therefore liberalism approves killing people across the world. Liberals are dangerous - your liberal neighbor literally wants to knife your little daughter and then blow up the local mosque."_
Why do so many idiots find the first argument logical and compelling, while they find the second argument illogical and absurd? Aren't both arguments illogical and absurd?
*Do you want to know why the US is broke and subject to an increasingly totalitarian surveillance regime?*
It is because the American people allowed themselves to be duped by absurd arguments into endorsing the "Global War on Terrorism" - spending 8 trillion dollars and agreeing to give the government unlimited surveillance/policing powers in the name of "fighting terrorism/extremism" as characterized by the first argument above..
United still does this, but in India
Passenger is a doctor, Daughter is an Attorney, they mess with the wrong passenger
they should be ashamed , this was unacceptable . all the best to that passenger , he did not deserve this
I. An American born raised I
Here this is disgusting heart breaking to say the least. At times I am ashamed at things see. It's everywhere not just here. My question is why didn't someone else offer their seat. So.
United does this quite often in other countries, so they have been banned
Im glad United Airlines is loosing money... Treating passengers like delinquents is not acceptable... hope United stocks keep going down.....
Hello, person from a year later here. They're still going strong, sadly.
They also killed a dog by putting it in the overhead cabin
Modesto Garcia I hate United Airlines too let’s be buddies!
Thanks to covid 19 they are dropping hard
Agreed
United Airlines: arrive a doctor, leave a patient!

I don't understand this at all! An airline applies the 'law of the jungle', they beat the crap out of a *PAYING CUSTOMER* - and they only lose 4%?! How about *a loss of 96%?!*
I am good for 200%
because 4% is a billion dollars
@@alexhb7949 'Peanuts' in their eyes I'm afraid ...
@@manoftheworld1000 it really is not, think about how much a billion dollars is. think of how many people must have pulled out money for it to amount to 1bil
Bumping a passenger happens BEFORE THEY BOARD THE PLANE!!! NOT AFTER!
Castaway and not for an employee. Airline employees should always be stand by only and paying customers should come first
Exactly, they only can kick you out of a seat from breaking 1 of 24 rules. And he broke none.
@@TheTacobeaster exactly. Their employees can and should always be stand by. Paying customers who show up on time should NEVER have to give up their paid seat!!
UPDATE: The CEO has since changed his "words" and Dr. Dao received settlement slightly over $1 Million. I personally believe he should have received at minimum $3 Million.
Buy a ticket get a free beating
From year to year, United airlines still didn’t learn that when they ‘apologize’ and say that it would never happen again, it is supposed to never happen again. Well that taught them
[chuckling] The next day a scorpion was found on a United plane.
I recall a time that when a plane was “overbooked,” and the airline had have to “remove” someone, they offered money and raised it until someone voluntarily left. That seemed to work quite well. Why they randomly selected this one guy, who seemed to really need to get to his destination, seems ill advised.
I am a human will never be a passenger of that flight again.
United Airlines shears should have dropped by 75%.
I was very glad that they lost that much money, and trust me I wish that they will burn in HELL, they are stopping a doctor from seeking and saving a patients life
even if his not doctor that's horrible for everyone
the never went to hell hahaha they still standing boy!! hahahahahaha "AGGGGGGGGHHHH AAAAGGGHHHH" 🤣
It took United Airlines to (1) attempt to bribe passengers to get off the plane, (2) argue with Dr Dao (3) Call the security officers (remember they are NOT the Chicago Police Department) (4) Security Officers to abuse Dr Dao and drag him off the plane (5) unload the paying passengers to clean the blood off the seats, (5) then recheck in the passengers with the 4 United Airlines staff, (6) finally get ground clearance and fly...almost 6 hrs has past. It would have taken less amount to time for the 4 staff members to drive 3 hrs to Louisville.🤔
I didn't know 5.) and so on. Thanks.
Good analysis!
Or just had asked for a volunteer to have taken $1000 voucher because somebody on that flight would’ve given up their seat for 1000 bucks
What would have happened if someone's child was randomly selected or someone's spouse? Somehow I don't believe this was randomly picked at all. Thankfully social media caught it on video.
That's crap about just obeying, like the blonde guy said. Then nothing would have changed and we would have had no video and would never have known how selfish and ridiculous they are.
@@bodhi1462 absolutely agree with original post and your reply. Sad he had to go through this but I’m glad that everyone was filming and he got $1 million to show what kind of harassment these airlines get away with.
Random? If that's really true then they can randomly choose a child and remove them from their family.
They have done it!!! Look at YT airplane passenger removals... its sick!
The guy on the left says if the airline aks you to vacate your seat you are "advised" to do as they say.
Yeah, you better do as they say, not because of the law, but because they will beat you up if you don't!
I'm never flying united if I have another choice - even if i have to pay more money.
Yeah, and then he said leave your seat and take it up with the agent outside but if this guy had done that, he would’ve just been rebooked on another flight and inconvenienced instead of the $million dollars he was able to get for this crazy shenanigans and for everyone to see exactly what these airlines do so I’m glad he didn’t leave that seat, although violence was deplorable.
All they had to do was to offer 10k, if they had no volunteers for 1k. They would have found volunteers for 10k.
now lose 10 billion
Their policy used to limit compensation by airplane staff to $800, $1,300 if approved by a supervisor. Now, I think it's $5,000 and $10,000.
I hope he doctor is well and gets better. Companies like this should get out of business for treating people who did nothing badly
Their prices are less in every route they fly.nonexcuse for this though

United Airlines: We'll bring the flight, and the fight!
you should use that force during war not to drag passengers off the plane
If he would have politely left the plane, they'd still be doing this crap. I'm so tired of people telling us to be wimpy and deal with it later in court. Yea, right. Like that will help. Don't hold your breath. They say that with cops, too, but then nobody ever knows what's really going on.
All they had to do was keep raising the offer until someone agreed to take it. They needed to offer cash, not a stupid coucher!
Why don't they offered the money to everybody in the flight? I bet there would be at least one person who would gladly take it.
That happened to me while standing in a ticket line and people hesitated for about 10 seconds, while my mother and I quickly discussed and decided to take their offer - ‘twas probably only a couple hundred dollars and meal vouchers but we accepted -
This newscast has the best music.
#BoycottUnitedAirlinesFOREVER
Good their losing money that’s what they get. You can’t just treat someone like that.
Wtf with the circus music in the background?
Sean Nguyen lol try is ridiculous
It’s the exact music United uses on their safety video they show you before the flight takes off. It was very spot on for this piece to use it
United airlines is a horrible joke
Legends say that the guy on left is still smiling.
I actually noticed that too lol
Its rediculous that this isn't considered assault by the police. No contract should be able to include straight assault.
Kudos to the policemen for being there in getting rid of these unruly passenger. Next time listen!
Obviously didn't watch the video.
@@thatsmesothere he needs to listen when told to get off his actions have consequences. Glad he got dragged off. Ive been told to get off my plane and i got the next flight without a problem. I kept my teeth and face intact. He made himself the victim
@@davinalopez-oz1ezYou are incorrect. He actually is a doctor who is needed at a clinic or something the next day. That is why he did not want to be bumped due to United’s inability to not overbook. Let me put you into Mr Tao’s shoes. Imagine you are in a flight, about to depart for whatever place, needed urgently at the office of whatever. Suddenly, a flight attendant announced in the PA that they overbooked the flight and they asked for 4 volunteers to leave the plane. You did not want to but got chosen from the computer. You declined the offer since you were needed the next day. However, the plane’s security was called and they violently forced you out of your seat, causing 2 of your teeth to fall out, your mouth to bleed, your nose injured and suffer a concussion. This left you crying and screaming as your blood spewing throughout the seats of the plane. Following this, you look at RUclips a few days later, and notice a stupid idiot saying that you deserved it.
@@Gilesiscool69420 there are other doctors. Quit making excuses. He deserved it ..next!!!!
I know this comment is four years after this incident, but I have come to realize that the Chicago Dept of Aviation Police Department and United are BOTH EQUALLY to blame for their poor conducts. United Airline flight attendants, due to various Federal laws, generally have the upper hand in all disputes in the name of "safety" which is a poor excuse for lack of tact and professional customer service skills. The Police, for different but in the same class of reasons, generally have the upper hand in all disputes like FAs.
Both classes of people are given wide latitude to do their jobs, but those in this instance chose their course of actions poorly. And they wonder why the public don't trust either FAs and police officers to do the right thing!
So, if you survive TSA, the airlines can beat the crap out of you, and lie afterwards ?
Don't buy United Airlines ticket ever. Worst mistake of my life 🥺
The CEO's reaction at first, was disturbing! WRONG! Basically topped the sundae on that one.......You prefer sprinkles or chocolate chips? Horrible......
Serve United right.
Here at United, we're here to -beat- serve our customers.
There is a very difficult attitude at all levels in American travel hubs. The security staff treat every traveller as if they are criminals. I have been yelled at, screamed at, and generally bullied because I was unaware of some rule or policy, or I did not see some sign or direction that was expected of me. It happens that I am a very 'Senior Citizen' but do not generally look my age, and the staff, I suppose, think I am being deliberately obstinate. Also, I have vision problems. Maybe I should invest in a 'white cane' for American Airport use in order to evoke sympathy on the part of attendant staff.
It probably wouldn't make a difference. Ever been to the Southwest check in counter at Portland, OR airport? They have a full on c$nt working there!
im feeling a bit of tinge racism among those airport security
At United “ we’re not happy until you’re not happy”!
It's disgusting. He was forced off a flight which he paid for to make room for united employees which who weren't paying.
Even it's overbooked, they should have no rights to remove person that's already seated. It must be first come first serve. The last person will have to ride on another plane.
it will never happen if they just know how to be compationate and kind to their customers.
Punish United for this Racial attack
I saw this and decided not to fly with American Airlines ever again
It waS United AirIines not American.
@@rwilson7197 AA is just as bad...
I wish the airlines had lost a lot more ... like 50-60% of their share value. Kicking off a random customer who paid for his seat just so they can accommodate a higher paying passenger should be a crime.
The ball now is in the China-chinese hand to see UA pay more than just compensation (RESPECT)
Use that extra force on criminals and murderers but not on ordinary people. What a disgrace and shame for that force.
With no cell phone video, we never even hear about these events.
When will they ban cell phones?
Interesting how the “random” selection of passenger to be removed was an older asian person - UA thought he would automatically and easily comply to their bullying and abuse! 😡
Actually under very few circumstances, private businesses really can't violate your civil rights in the united states. A retailer can tell you to leave. If you don't, you can be physically removed.
A person is not a guest when they are paying for a service.
Why do they still exist?
A passenger who was not even traveling alone, if I recall.
$1000 is nothing when hotels are $400 a night across the USA. This is out of control.
Just 4%?
make it 40%
the dude made 140 million in settlement, not bad..
Contract of carriage is deceitful
3:10.. this dude holds that smile and look so long, i thought his video froze up at 3:56.. its a good thing he's blinking... lol.. 😂😂😂
How the hell they can beat a passenger, they aren't human they are absolutely devil
Did they need to play the music on the video??????
It's baffling to see the airline has moved on since the incident. Capitalism is savage.
Their stock price should have went down 90 percent.
Randomly? I don't think it's random
Those weren't cops, they're SS soldiers of the American Gestapo committing another act of brutality against an Asian person.
And what did they learn from this? To deboard the plane before dragging out someone, so there are less smartphones to record….
F... United, 2020 i am still boycotting United. This Shaun is working for United.
It's May 2021, and I am still boycotting United.
First they broke a man's guitar
Gotta love human beings am I right?!?!?
Did United try asking if any other passenger would take the bump before calling in the goons?
Perhaps the feds should have given United's covid relief funds to other airlines. They need to learns how it feels to be bumped.
United ended up paying him an estimated $140 Million and later admitted it was NOT an overbooking issue
The extra crazy thing about this that when a company does this ( deliberately? ) The stock price crashes, then someone within The airline or ( outside ) buys up all this cheap stock, then a year later, all that stock has recovered, & they’re a major stockholder ( ? ) !
united was trying to clear seats for a comp flight for an airline flight crew, not overbooking
Was excessive force, he was a doctor who ended up with injuries to his face and dragged out like garbage.
What I dont understand is why they cant just announce this and ask if theres someone esle willing to give their seat up.
This boycott isnt enough!
Why do they take someone out of a seat in favor for a passenger who is not seated? First, come first served.
Still 6 years and I am still boycotting them
I haven’t flown United again, and nor will I .
United Airlines..shame on you! I will NEVER fly you again as long as you treat human beings like this. It's completely UNACCEPTABLE! 🤬
I do not believe that a computer randomly selected anyone. I've heard that they have already ranked the people to bump before you arrive at the gate. If you are a frequent flier, traveling with someone else, or traveling with children you are unlikely to get bumped. But if you are traveling alone and don't travel a lot with that airline, then you are likely to get bumped. And I do not believe that United offers you actual money to give up your seat but a voucher which if you don't use that airline a lot is useless.
United and Boeing. Both under FAA regulations. All from the same country.
you are not a guest on the airline, you are a paying customer.
whats with the dumb music... that really killed it. It didn't go with what was happening at all, this isn't a tom and jerry cartoon...
United owns Delta airline and ... Been acting up again!!!
United should have some of their newest aircraft be taken away to asia for what they have done and also stock drops
Smart guy, “we get the airlines we deserve” same applies to politics, “we also get the presidents we deserve.”
Well, They should treat their customers equally if this is caused due to Asian-white conflict as this is the most simple and basic rule of business that companies must treat their customers with proper ethics.
and second, according to the airline management , if the flight was overbooked and there's a passenger on the flight who caused it so this is not the way of dealing with the situation. They should reconsider this if they want to manage their stock crises..
Let it bankrupt...boycott United Airlines
United Airline? I'll remember this airline company....I'll not book a flight from this airline company...
why rush the interview??
Very wrong. Unacceptable. First of all, he has the right to refuse, they allowed him to buy the ticket, means he had a seat.
That’s the reason don’t like to fly with United! So low quality of customer service!
I made the determination in the late 90's to never fly United Airlines.
OK I buy a ticket on the plane. I confirm my booking the day before. I get up out of bed at 1am. Get a bite to eat. Drive 3 hours to a parking area. Park the car. Get a bus to the airport. Spend 3 hours going through security and customs. Board a plane for a 10 am flight. Expecting to arrive in the US 16 hours later. THEN they say "I want your seat". Where do I go now? What do I do? I am stranded at the airport. Ongoing flights in the US are now forfeit. And why? Because they chose to sell more seats than we had available. Notwithstanding their "conditions of carriage" that would breach our trade practices law. They sold something they didn't have available to sell. Qantas is in deep trouble for doing this knowingly. Selling seats on flights that had been cancelled.
Horrific! Never want to fly with them.
Why does this odly remind me of Rosa Parks. Fight for your rights people
Your not just flying you’re flying the unfriendly sky
4:17 the passenger was doing WHAT in his seat??
Serve them right!
If you get draged out like this please beat them up as u can. And sue them
Playing background music during the passenger extrication video is a bizarre editing choice on the part of your show programmers. It makes you appear tone-deaf to this elderly man’s suffering. The original clip is already very difficult to watch, I find it disturbing that you found a way to make it even more difficult to watch. What’s next-a laugh track?
