    as a 60 year old DIY'er who knows it all I gotta tell you I learned only one thing here and that is I been doing it wrong for 40 plus years. glad I found your channel, you break things down to the layman's level very well both in how you give the information and the reasoning behind it. I find I will sometimes watch your video not only for the know how factor but also they are entertaining as well. Peace, blessing, and prosperity for you and your family in the new year.

      Remember when disc brakes first came out and brake jobs cost extra for disc brakes? And the rotor and bearing assembly was frequently one piece?

      @@JohnRodriguesPhotographer I DO remember that! you had to pull the rotors to pack the wheel bearings. AND remember how expensive new rotors were in the early days?

      @@pastblast1664 Oh yeah! There was an Auto parts supply I used to turn rotors and drums. I think it was $6 each. At least with those units you had to repack your bearings and replace the seal with a brake job!

    Okay, so as everyone (including me) has determined thus far...this video is really the ultimate guide on RUclips for brake service, or at least should be considered as the standard.. As a former line tech, I have used the same methods that you have outlined here for many years with equal success, but please Eric, for your sake..for your families sake..please use a respirator, or at least a mask when blowing the rust and dust about. Remember, like a car, you are a machine, a wonderfully created biological machine, but a machine nonetheless. Machines need filters. If you don't use an external filter, you ARE the rust and dust filter, and you can't change yourself! Keep up the great work, it is a pleasure to watch you work!!!

      This is a salient point, as a mechanic, who does this sort of work every day, I can not agree more, brake dust and rust will fuck up your lungs , and by the time you are old enough to realise, the damage will be well done, even pulling your shirt up over your face is better than just inhaling that nasty shit.

      @@TrueBlueEG8 tell me about it, twisted wrenches all my life, ended my career by getting lung cancer. Never thought about all the break dust flying. Never no dangers in the old days, lol. Now they tell us......Im fortunate though, drs. gave me 'about 09 days, chemo and radiation DEFEATED the cancer but it also beat me up pretty good, lol....been 6 years as of 9/2/20 and last CT shows all holding steady, lol......you guys be careful a bit, early retirement isn't always what its cracked up to be, hahahaha.

      That's what I keep struggling a bit with, being a current student told to wear a respirator and safety glasses, etc. when working on brakes. But then on my OJT almost no one wore safety glasses and not a single brake job involved even a basic mask let alone respirator. Asbestos may not be nearly as common anymore in brake pad material, but you never know when someone might've put on some cheap aftermarket ones that do contain it. Even that aside, just the dust itself from the brake pads and the rust and all that flying around is rough on the lungs. I was a smoker for 18 years, so I can't be risking further damage to my lungs. I'll be wearing a respirator when I work on brakes or doing anything that involves flying dust and other particles.

      I came here to determine positioning of the brake pad wear indicators, in front of or behind the caliper and positioned up or down in the caliper bracket?

    Eric, I'm an ex ASE auto mechanic. I now work in industrial maintenance. I still do my fair share of auto repairs including brakes. I've always cleaned off rusty parts, but never really put much thought into it. After watching this video, I have a new found respect for the importance of cleanliness and I will adopt your techniques to future brake repairs! I enjoy your videos, keep it up!

    About the customer refusing to go for a brake bleed , it never ceases to amaze me that the vast majority people don't understand that if you want the car to take care of you , you have to take care of it . EXAMPLE ! I've seen people piss and moan about the failure of their automatic transmission @ less than 100K on the clock , then you find out they never had it serviced . Then they whatever brand the car is , say things like "I'll never buy that brand again" . I think people think and in some cases it might be true , that the shop is trying to up the bill . That is why it is so important to find a good honest mechanic like Eric and listen to his advise . TheReaper!

    Eric, you are the brake job guru. Personally, when I used to do brake jobs the "quick" way, I had comebacks due to pads seizing in the caliper brackets...didn't know why.
    But since adopting your method of taking time to cleaning off the rust and lubing the brackets, that is no longer an issue! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise.

    I see guys on various forums who brag about how quickly they can do a brake job. I tend to be a little slow in comparison because I spend a lot of time cleaning calipers and brackets, lubing contact surfaces, and replacing hardware. My brakes don't squeak on any of my cars.

      I’m the same way. I’m slower than other guys but at the end of the day I know I did a good job and there won’t be any squeaks. Anyone can do a quick brake job but I would rather spend an extra half hour doing a professional brake job.

      Exactly, i always get roasted where i were work for taking my time and torquing everything down to spec and so far I've never had a comeback so i will continue to do it this way. Yet others around me who boast about doing brakes very quickly hardly ever clean anything properly, no torquing and have had numerous comebacks lol.

    This video was published like in 2016. Man its 2020 and its helping people out there like me. I am new to USA and bought a 10 years old Hyundai Sonata due budget constraints. Got its first brake job done (that included pads replacement and just resurfacing of rotors) and this job was charged at 360$ !! Its was almost 20% of my car's worth. Back in my country Pakistan, the whole job with new rotors including labour would cost me less than 80$ for sure. It was a lesson for me to learn DIY for basic car jobs. Within 3 months of the expensive brake job of 360$, the brakes started to mess up again and then i found this video. Thanks Eric. Instead of throwing money again to the Car mechanic, this time i figured out my caliper Pin problem and resolved it in under 30$ of tools and lubricants. Really appreciate your knowledge and the lively way you impart it.

    That is EXACTLY how I have been doing brake jobs , just like my father taught me when I was 14 . before I could drive it I had to do required maintenance on a vehicle . I'm 46 now and I still do my brakes the same and they LAST !

    A really good and informative video. As DIYrs, there are several maintenance and repair jobs, like this one, that learning all the little fine points you show will make our efforts much more effective. I've got to do a front pads replacement on one of our vehicles this week and I am going to take my laptop out into my garage and follow along with you as I do it!     Awesome video, great detail and perfect examples. Where I used to live, rust wasn’t much of an issue. So for decades I always replaced the pads/hardware/clips and put brake caliper grease on the ears of the pads & slide pins and never had a problem. Now I live in an area where rust is a concern and you’ve just convinced me to add grease between the hardware/clips and the caliper mounting bracket to prevent rust build up. I never thought of that. Very good tip. Thanks...

    Hi EricO... I have to sell DIYers brake stuff all day in a big chain parts store up here in Canada. I am not a licensed mechanic myself, just tangential experience as a drag racer, worked in motorsports for a while and a past as a tool and die maker so i have "seen" stuff. I hear a lot of BS about brakes (sometimes from hack techs), particularly about grease and where/why it it is used in on brakes. I try to keep my mouth shut and nod and smile. This vid as old as it is, really drove home the clips and rust aspect. Now i get it so thanks so much. Cheers man and stay warm!

    Thank you! I was excited when a friend did my rear brakes but after seeing these videos, I understand why I still have squeals. There was no lube,the caliper pins and rubber bush weren’t even touched

    This one video has been so helpful. The extra detail on those special clips was very helpful, been looking all over for what and how and why and nothing. You would think they would have some of this info included in with the parts, minimal at best. Thanks again, it's very much appreciated.

    This is something I too am super anal about. I had some old timers tell me that by refusing to do cheap brake jobs, I would lose business, but it actually has been the opposite. But also, I watched another video about brake hardware that was posted today, and there is a BIG difference in the quality of the job done VS the awesome job you did.

    I have watched many competent guys do brake jobs on RUclips but you are the first to start by warning that as pistons are pressed back, the master cylinder can overflow. That's very important because brake fluid is a good paint stripper and can do expensive damage. Excellent. Thank you.

    "Attention to detail" is the name-of-the-game! Really Great Video! Out here in Calif, except for a sudden damage to the components, those brakes will last for MANY years with no degrade in performance as they wear! I wish you were here!

      yeah here in pa we have same problem i spray mine with liquid wrench day before i do brakes and use a nice six sided wrench and pray they will come free i even spray bleeders and loosen them when i have wheel apart just so i can get them out in future

    Excellent video! I performed a hack job on my brakes and less than a year later had a number of issues, pedal pulsation, slanted pad wear and excessive rotor wear (blame the lead foot and crappy rotors for that one). I proceeded to edumacate myself and performed the brake service again, correctly. Brakes are performing well 1.5 years later with no noises or pulsation. Many of the things you mentioned here are what made all the difference.

    Your videos are top notch & very entertaining. Your a very personable spoke person. I appreciate you taking the time out of your shop time to make videos. Here in Northern Wisconsin, I have been having a lot of trouble doing brake jobs lately. I don't own a blasting cabinet. Those pads never fit into the caliper bracket anymore. Always have to grind the ears of the pad which is very time consuming. The filing never works. Never had those issues in the old days when the pads just went into the caliper. Keep up the great videos my friend

    I wish ALL mechanics would take the time and effort that you do on their customers vehicles. I've watched a lot of brake repair videos and this is the absolute best one of them all!     It's nice to see someone that cares to do a good brake job the right way. My 2005 G.M.C. Safari has a rattle in the front brake area, (only over rough patches in the road). In the last 5 years I have had mechanics replace, the timing chain, the timing cover, the water pump, the spider injectors, all the seals in the 4.3 engine, the radiator pressure tested, 2 serpentine belts, all the pulleys and tension pulley, the transmission yoke seal replaced, the drive shaft pulled out, the pinion gear seal replaced, all new brakes all around (new disks,calipers, rotors, ceramic brake pads, and new hardware), motor mounts, transmission mount, oil cooler lines, transmission cooler lines, 2 power steering lines, new steering box, blower motor for the heater with heater relay, all the body mounts, transmission u joint, differential u joint, pinion gear 2 bearings, both carrier bearings, pinion shaft and bolt, 2 axle bearings, 2 front wheel bearings, emergency brake replaced with new cable, 4-rear leaf spring pack, 2 front coil springs, front and rear shocks, ball joints upper and lower both sides, control arm bushings upper and lower both sides, all the rubber hoses, 3 batteries, 2 fuel pumps, 2 alternators, a distributor. The oils that i use are by Royal Purple, coolant is Prestone orange color. I had the engine, transmission and radiator flushed prior to using new fluids. I also replaced the harmonic balencer, and all the pulleys and a sway bar and end links. I've kept up with all the maintenance. Now guess what, still that annoying rattle. I treat the van as a daily driver hobby van. I chose freedom 55 for retirement back in Kitchener, Ontario, that was twelve years ago. I think my wife bought me the van because it only had 72,000 km. on it and was completely rust free. She always has called it Tonka a diamond in the rough. Not many mechanics use a torque wrench anymore, they now use torque sticks. I enjoy your videos on u-tube. I think a lot of people are going to chime in on my problem.

    Hi---- Been watching your videos but first time comment. I'vs been a mechanic ( not tech!) since I was a teen in central NY. Was born and lived in Buffalo until 10 and moved to Auburn. If you can fix a car in NY you can do anywhere! lol Just wanted to give kudos to you; you're very good at your job and very thorough!! I taught motorcycle mechanics at the local college for about 13 years and tried to impart to my students many of the great skills you cover in your sessions and a special emphasis on good workmanship! I do brakes on my vehicles the same way and even use the same purple permatex you use! I'm "old school" so I still turn my rotors as I like to keep the OEM ones on as long as possible. Keep up the great work; you are truely a huge asset to the industry.

    So many terrific hints and tips. You could fill a notebook with them! Just one: The idea that you don't need to crack the bleeder when pushing the piston back. Amen, bro. Wish I'd known that 40 years ago doing my first. Also your emphasis on thorough inspection of all hardware. Good auto parts stores suggest new HW when purchasing pads. People think they're getting ripped off, but it's not true. Learns that the hard way...

    Eric, wanted to let you know that I'm a testimonial of the "if I can do it, you can do it." I'm a final year law student and last year decided to supplement my income (and try to put a dent on the loans) by fixing some Subaru's. -- Utah and Subaru's just go hand in hand.       The parents are happier about grandkids:) He's at Strong Memorial Hospital, he's a cardio thoracic surgeon (heart/lung). He knows all the folks at the oncology sector, though. Let me know if there's anything I/he can do for you. I'll make sure you're taken care of.

      Well My Dad was there 5 or 6 years ago for heart surgery (aneurysm repair and valve job) then he was back with stage 4 multiple myeloma... so heck I may have even seen your brother!

      I am wondering that too. It looks like a much better consistency for the application than the stuff I use. His looks nice and creamy. Mine is more of a jelly-like chassis grease consistency. Seems to me like his purple goo will do a better job of staying where you put it.

    When you don't have money it's a matter of getting going again, end of story! You can argue with that till you're blue in the face but fact remains that most people will take the cheap ticket not the expensive one.

    the level of detail and care and uncommon sense is off the scale in this video. I've seen so many half-ass brake jobs where people threw things back together without cleaning or lubing anything, then brag about getting the job done so quick..

    ETCG did not clean hardware surface, just scraped it a little. also did not lube the brackets! like your way better !

      +zoidberg444 There's something to be said for having rear drum brakes. If you have rear discs and you're here in NY, you really need to service the rear brakes every year to keep them working properly. The salt spray in winter seizes things up back there pretty quick (at least in my limited experience).
