Good tip using WD on aged anti seize.
What are you using to clean up around the lug nut bolts? Not the discs but what went over top of them to clean next to the bolt.
Also curious on the stud cleaning tool.
Pleeeease add link to the tool you used to clean around the base of the studs (goes over the top of them).

I was laughing when you mentioned ranger with a 3L, That's my current daily she's an 05 also. Not nearly as crusty as you're customer's truck and she's lived on long island all her life. I've done Brakes all around, Front end work, suspension, all new fluids and oils from watching you're videos. Thanks for all of you're help. One job that intimidates me is a broken exhaust manifold bolt, I've been avoiding it because I don't want to open up a can of worms.

Keep doing the brake videos (especially drum brakes). You may not realize it, but there is so much we learn by watching how you approach a fastener or overcoming problems. Things like tool choices, accessing/approaching fasteners, overcoming adversity, or even just installing fiddly springs add to our knowledge base. What you sometimes do automatically is a revelation for some of us. Thank you for what you do.
Now Mrs O is supervising your brake job. You got to give her a raise.
Probably mentioned: The blue paint on the caliper and other assorted parts adds at least 20 HP to this flame beast of a truck.........
can confirm, painted the calipers on my 2011 Toyota Yaris. It now puts 150 hp out instead of the already blistering 108 hp.
I thought in this case the blue paint helped cool down the brakes from the extra heat / horse power that the flames added.
@@tylerh629 i have a 2011 yaris i bought for 900$ no run. Honestly a really cool car. I took the doors off and it’s spray painted now. Kids at school love it.

Excellent! Glad I never worked in rust country (but now live there...). A thought... back in (stone age) high school auto shop, our instructor often went on over the importance of giving calipers a couple of brass mallet raps before the last bleeding 'pump' cycle/s... in order to knock loose 'cling on' bubbles within said caliper. Always did it out of habit, sometimes even with master, wheel & slave cylinders; but don't know how much good it actually does. Got some odd looks from other techs too. Cool videos, Thanks!
I do like how you say "some people are intimidated by drum brakes.... I don't know why"... then you proceed to do 100 steps where, you really have to know everything you're doing, & why... I had a real bad experience with drums on an old Tahoe, and I said "Never again"... After watching that video, I said "ummm hmmm.... Yep. Never again."

Well, I mean no slight to Eric when I say this, but anyone can do it with a lift, a big air compressor, and all the right tools. I mean, spring pliers. What shade tree mechanic bothers to get those, right? We're all out here on our bad knees on the ground fighting with a pair of regular needle-nose pliers trying to fight those f#$_ing springs back into place and by the time we're done (if we haven't already called "uncle") we're ready to beat an automotive engineering to death. It's for reasons like this that I'm honestly surprised it's not easier to find a place that rents lift time and air tools by the hour. I mean, I get the liability issues but I bet some smart entrepreneur could make it work.
They're really not difficult to do, maybe a pen is the right tool for you! 🤔
Ah, gimme a brake. I used to do mine in the driveway. I don't remember it being difficult at all. The most time it took was when I took the drums to get cut and had to wait.
Drum brakes aren't hard to do. I've done them before I had a cell phone. At least now you can take a picture to see how everything goes back together.
No one to show me how to do them, no special tools, barely had a jack. Pair of pliers and some sockets/wrenches and you can fix them.
You may mess up the order the first few times, but after that you start to get it.
I, for one, will never get tired of what might be "basic" brake job videos. I'm a home DIY'er taking care of five (well, soon to be four) cars (including an '08 Ranger), so having a reference for ANY of this information - especially a video - is like a gold mine. Thank you for taking the time to put these together, Eric!
As a Mechanic and do alot of brake jobs all the times. I most say i enjoy all watching your brake videos. Im from the rust belt across the pond and it the rusty stuff we deal with here.
I wish there were more mechanics like you, especially in my town. Your honest, through and only replace the parts needed. Your knowledge on diagnostics is well above the average. You sir are a true professional . Every video I have watched of yours ,has been very informative . Thank you for sharing your knowledge .

No, no! I had that cool tool that's bent just right and has a relief in the end so it doesn't slide off the locator tab - slip, sproing - every time!

"New school" mechanics are intimidated by drum brakes because they've never seen, let alone worked on them. A close friend of mine is the "automotive technology" (or something like that) instructor at our local vocational high school. He stopped by my little shop a few Sundays back as I was getting set to do drum brakes (all 4 wheels) on a 68 Chevy C-10. He actually only stopped to drink a beer and shoot the breeze until he saw what I had in the shop. He then proceeded to pretty much demand that I bring it to the school so that the students could do the work. You should've seen their faces when they got the tires off! The looks were priceless! It was even better when my friend and I showed them how to get the drums off. They were dumbfounded by all the springs etc. Since the truck is getting a nut/bolt restoration, it took them a couple days, under my friends careful supervision, to do the job, but, they did it right and learned a good lesson. Now, they all want to participate in the rest of the project!
Good video, very interesting, FYI when I got out of high school I went to work at a Oldsmobile/Datsun dealership servicing used cars that were traded in, and one time I had a Ford Granada to service and I noticed that the brakes felt funny when I pulled it in the shop so I put it on the lift and started checking them and I started the car and put it in drive and gave it a little gas then pushed the brake pedal and the rear wheels just kept turning no matter how hard I pushed, the car had about 75K miles on it and the brakes were brand new, so I got my boss to pump them up and I did not get one drop of fluid so I cracked a line coming out of the TEE on top of the axle housing, still no fluid, so I loosened the flexible line going into the TEE and got fluid, so I took the TEE off and it was never drilled out at the factory, no rear brakes ever, very interesting, I showed it to the mechanics in the main shop and they got a kick out of that, I just wanted to tell you about that experience,

I paid a bunch of premadana instructors who were not close to your level of Precision and knowledge. You are a exalted teacher. Humble and a work ethic with integrity what else can we want. Also RUclips has a zoom venture. Anything in frame you can zoom.
2 2022 Thanks 4 tips/reminders your presention pic's are clear to me. back 1970's my dreams were breake jobs, so it was nite & day work for me. Even product smells are re-played as I watch you. Being in my 80's the Dr.'s treat me as a old vehicle's needing artifical knees, hips, etc. Dr. uses some same tools you do.

The great thing about RUclips is if we don't want to watch another brake video we can just move on. It would be interesting to see which one of the kids carries on in the shop business. I hope I'm around long enough to find out.
Nice work restoring those brakes. You give such thorough explanations, there's no need to ask questions. I like all your videos, though the diagnostic videos are most interesting, both with and without the scanner/scope.

Jacob Wood I’m in AZ and don’t deal with it as much. Now that we have a lot of transplants from the NE states we’re starting to see more rust cars. 😑
A nice thing to do would be to “retire” to a non rust belt state and work on cars there. It would be like you died and gone to heaven.
It is a completely different game up here. Very few things come apart easily! The road salt DESTROYS everything on the car!

I really like the way you completely disassembled and explained the parking brake adjustment mechanism. We don't see drum brakes often any more, it will be nearly extinct in the next generation.
goenitzlopez Yep, they're still popular. They're cheap and last a long time because they don't have much braking power. The 75/25 distribution of braking usage makes rear brakes last 2-3 times as long as the front brakes, so it's not too big of a deal unless you tow or have a performance car.

If I am working on anything unfamiliar that has to be apart for a while I take lots of pictures from lots of angles. I had a Johnson Outboard apart for about six years once before I found the time to put it back together. It was completely stripped down. The wiring harness would have been near impossible to get back on right if i had not had the pictures. I also us my camera to take pictures in tight spots where my head won't fit to find oil, coolant leaks, stuff like that, I have to work off the floor and don't always have the ability to lift a vehicle to look at what I need to see. I just poke the camera in there and take a video or some snap shots to see what i'm in for before I start work.
It just struck me that you are the Bob Ross of the mechanics world. Everyone is an artist when they have passion for their work and love their job.
Been awhile since I did a drum brake job. Watching your method of operations reminds me of the days when disc brakes were for Candy Ass European cars. Funny how Americans finally traversed toward disc brakes. Working on a 1974 Ford Bronco all drums and this video " tuned me up". Thanks Mr. O.

My 87 Ranger with the "fire breathing" 2.9L had the front brakes with the push (with a hammer) pins holding the calipers. HATED THEM! Rears were similar to this one. Good job! New copilot now! PRICELESS ! !

I like the older "square body" trucks. Simpler to work on, SAE tools, and lots of room to work with. I have a '90 Ranger, and a '79 GMC "Heavy Half". Love them both cause they are PAID FOR, and have never seen salt.

When I lived on the farm we said. Shxt is money. for mechanics rust is money. Moved from rusty minnesota to colorado in 1980 never miss the rust.

Great job Mr. Eric O. !! Thank you for being thorough and complete in your work. It is encouraging for me to see others(albeit very few) who are willing to take the time to do it right the first time. It makes for a happier customer, and a happier mechanic in case you get to do the brakes again another time.
Me again, 5 yrs later. I just did rear drum brakes on a 1997 F-150 and followed instruction video of taking the shoe off along with the parking break lever by removing the cable from the bottom of the lever. The cable ended up going way up into the spring and it took all I had to compress that spring far enough to clamp some vice grips to the tip of the cable, then I had to put it into the groove on the Parking lever. Got it done but it took two of us, one to pull the lever and spring so that the other person could pull the tip of the cable into the slot. I think next time I'll follow your lead.

#1 rule with drum brakes ... Do one side at a time. Use the opposite side as a reference for re-assembly !

@@bucksmkr12ga The first time I had my rear breaks done, on one side they called me over to show me that someone before I got my truck had put some of the hardware in backwards. They were shaking their heads trying to figure out how 'they' did that.

like, finding two left side "adjuster" cable's, one on each side? had that on a jeep from a CHRYSLER/JEEP DEALER, they supposedly just serviced the brakes when it was bought

I like the fact that you have done "1000's" of brake videos but still forget things and struggle with getting some things installed. Not as much as I do but still it makes me feel less frustrated when I forget something and have to go back or it takes a long time.

Regarding doing brake videos - you should never stop doing them. I say this because brakes and rotors are parts on a vehicle that have a service life and then they fail. When they do, people start searching out how to change them. The braking system on a car may be "routine" work, but it's no laughing matter nor is it something to be taken lightly with haphazard attention. Those brakes are what save your life every day. The average Joe who has some tools and is mechanically-inclined, can change his own brakes and take comfort in knowing that everything is done exactly as it should be. You show us how to do it the right way, why it is done, and that is invaluable for the simple guy like me who wants to do his own work to ensure its done right. The vast VAST majority of shops around my area are just throwing the crap on there as fast as they can with zero attention to detail so they can turn & burn on the next one. You are one of a select few mechanics I've ever seen that treats his customers cars and trucks as if they are his own. The pride you take in your work is nothing short of impressive, and heartening to see that there are still men around who do honest work for honest pay. You have saved me so much money over the years in diagnosing my problems on my vehicles and fixing them myself - especially brakes. I've followed your method to the T on my brakes since 2015 and have never once had a brake failure, a seized caliper, uneven pad wear, a scorched rotor, nothing. Permatex Extreme, fluid film, good hardware, etc. Good to go. Thank you Eric!
Always found rear shoes are the biggest PITA to change out, especially those damn springs.

Just did a rear pad job on my mothers 2013 Edge, which turned into to 2 new calipers..... got the Napa Eclipse calipers (same as this video) the plugs were tuff to get out on both lol.
Good to see a drum brake video. I replaced the rear brakes on my '06 Dakota three weeks ago.. Got 113,400 miles out of them. Since it was my first crack at em, I took pictures and went slow. Worked out great. I also heard that certain sound when ever i picked up the brake cleaner!!

So now I know how that "Neversieze encrusted" screwdriver ended up in my tool box. LOL. I have been doing brakes for over 30 years and still don't mind watching someone else doing it. (actually prefer it). Can always learn new tricks. Now, I have to go and clean out my drawer and feed the Ultra mini horses. Speaking of horses, You should do a video on the GM (Malibu's) horse shoe hold down spring brakes. I have a tool but they can be a mother...

Thanks for this video. Im getting ready to do the drums on the rear of my 89 F150, including the cylinders. These videos are great. It gives us an idea of what parts are the most difficult to deal with and the order of installation. Repetition is great for us do it yourselfers.

its reminiscent therapy for me, as I had to assist dad when working on these blasted drum brakes. as soon as I learned them, they stopped putting them on cars. Good riddance!

I thought mine was crusty! My Ranger (2004) had the luxury of living ts first seven years in a southern (Alabama) environment. 2011 to present it has resided in Ohio. 2011 til today has taken its toll. Went from near perfect to bed and floor boards mostly rusted out among several other rust related issues. I hope to move back south someday! Eric O, your talents would be extremely welcomed down there, but I don't think you would know what to do with the majority of vehicles having little to no rust!
One reason I watch brake videos is not because I do not know how to do them. I watch because different things happen in different situations, and you can not only learn from your own experience, but these videos allow one to also learn from your experience.
