Personally, like you, I don't worry too much about cleaning the inside of the reservoir. As long as the fluid is fresh, it's fresh right? Since you mentioned it though, I got to thinking (usually a dangerous thing for me lol!) and remembered how we used to clean the coffee pots at a diner I worked in back in high school in the 80's. We'd fill them about 1/2 way with crushed ice, add a few tablespoons of salt and shake the snot out of them. The pots always came out crystal clear. Maybe I'll try it on an old reservoir that I happen to have laying around (if I can find it!) from the V8 Ranger project that I'm currently working on.

@@codyrobert12 My mother did medical billing at a dialysis clinic. One of the patients had been on for years and he was old and tired. As you know, dialysis patients have strict dietary rules because they have to carry around whatever excess electrolytes and water they eat until their next appointment removes it. Well, this man had had enough of all that. He loved watermelons and bananas before his kidneys failed. He went to the store and bought both, went home, ate the whole watermelon and a few bananas, and died of the water and electrolyte overload. He decided he wanted to go out with one of his favorite foods, and he sure did. We take our functional body for granted, and it's not until we meet someone whose life is a living hell that we realize how lucky we actually are. :(

    Okay Dr.O
I've been watching SMA since day one. SMA is by far the best automotive repair channel in RUclips. For the longest I've always compared your rust area in Avoca to mine in NW.INDIANA. But today when you had to heat the rear e-brake adjuster to get the rotor off. Avoca is the hands down champion of the rust belt. Only if we could get our vehicle inspection back along with our mandatory smog testing which we have. To me the safety inspection in my thoughts should be a major concern. Gotta love the rust. One more thing. When I give a estimate whether it's from Mitchell pro or Alldata and sometimes Chilton Library I have to add extra time for the rust. 😉

So odd to hear of parking brakes never being used, here in the UK we always apply the handbrake (parking brake) whenever we leave the vehicle. I know people have commented on this before but I guess the manual gearbox rules supreme here and you need a mechanism to secure the car in place, ergo, the handbrake. Fun video as ever, especially the 'wheeee' trips around the workshop.

In all honesty I thoroughly enjoyed your old school methods of doing the job including putting the grease where it belonged for the emergency shoes. Nice seeing a master mechanic working through a job as it should. Ever thought of taking on a high school automotive shop student? I don't honestly know if they even teach automotive shop anymore. Was merely thinking if you had a student that really wanted to learn the proper way, you would be the man to teach him or her.

Stretching and hooking springs: what sometimes works for me is to loop a length of string through the spring hook. That way I can pull on the string to stretch the spring, using the needle nose just to guide it into the hole (versus trying to use the needle nose both for stretch and manoeuvr). The best string is the green and white plastic stuff that electricians use to pull wires through conduit: strong but also slippery enough to easily pull out once the spring is home. A spool of this stuff will last a lifetime.

On my '64 Chevy C-10 I couldn't afford new dust caps (when I was a young lad)and now, in my box, patiently awaiting the snow and rain to stop will install with all new front end hardware. I did manage to get the old ones to last with careful hammer strikes..... I'll try not to tear any rubbers, that could be disastrous at my age. I tried to time your torque to yelled and I think I got to 2 Mississippi. I think that is safer than torque to yield numbers..... I burnished the pads on the wife's 08 Honda Accord, believe me you want to folks! After 2 sets of burned brakes, I had some rotors hammered out of a meteorite cross drilled and slotted with upgraded pads with unobtanium and burnished those bad boys by the instructions and haven't had a problem since. I use Car Quest though, not a sponsor Remember folks, safety 3rd.

I had a mechanic do the brakes on my silverado and he didn't clean the mounting surface for some sort of what looked like a retaining clip and spring piece. That was fun to fix 600 miles from home in another state without the right tools after my brake locked up and started rolling smoke out of the fender. 30 seconds with a wire brush or 5 with that air sander would have saved me an hour of busted knuckles, a smashed fingernail and a lot of cussing.

And the passenger rotor would not come off. Hammer, bigger hammer, sledge hammer, nothing. I tried the extraction threads on the stock rotors with some 12mm bolts, still nothing, stripped the threads. "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"! 😂🤣😂 I don't think I've told you how much I friggin LOVE that! Makes me crack up hysterically!! You got me saying it now, LOL - it's highly contagious! 😁
Nice trick on those parking brake shoes! I've found that flipping out, throwing tools, and cussing at the top of my lungs does little for my productivity, so I'm going to try your way next time. 😂 The last set I did on a '04 Ram 1500 was easy - noticed the weeping axle seals and decided to sell that job. Soooo much easier with the axles out!
So I just got my compressor yesterday!! Just went through the thing to make sure nothing was wrong. Glad I did, because the little compression fitting on the nylon line they ran to the drain valve in one of the legs was leaking like a sieve. I had my neighbor drop the skid in the new shop so I could go through it. To power it up, I had to shut the breaker off to the lift, take the wires out of it, hook a set of jumper cables to that, then stuff some 4 AWG wire into the pressure switch of the compressor, and clamp the jumpers to the other side. Yep, OSHA would have a field day over here, lol! 🤣 Watch out for the live jumpers now! 😁It worked - let the thing run 20 minutes with the valve open, then shut the valve and let her air up to 175 when it kicked off. Stuff gets HOT, but it worked great. Just tightened that compression fitting, and all is well. Now just have to call the neighbor up and move it into the old shop where the Craftsman compressor is, and start shootin' vid on the install. 😎

My 96 Explorer V8 AWD uses a very similar set up in the rear. I have had issues with slide pins and the caliper slides (the stainless ones) over the last 10 years. After a few Ohio winters I have to take the backs apart and clean under/re-lube the caliper slides (stainless clips).

Man do I wish you posted this video like 2 years ago! I did my P Shoes on my 2000 F250, and as you assured, I lost my fricken mind. I bought just the shoes, so I had to reuse all hardware (yes I'm from the rustbelt so it was crusty) and put them on the factory way cause I only had what I took apart to replicate. I refused to pull out the axle shaft and spend about 2 hours on each side getting it all right. I ended up putting the spring on the shoes before putting it behing the wheel hub, then stretching it by hand over the face of the hub. Yep. I lost 3.5 fingers that day and my entire mind

I used to put the spring on the both shoes BEFORE fitting the shoes to the car - that way it's easier to get it on (and you can put it the right way around that way too ;)). YMMV.

FYI - If you have never done plain drum brakes (not discs with drum parking brakes) they are very similar with on big exception. The star wheel adjuster has a lever riding on top of it that will prevent the star wheel from going backwards. Simply sticking a brake tool in the slot and cranking will only TIGHTEN the shoes. You need to place a screwdriver in the slot first and push the lever off of the star wheel so that you can back it off.

The drums part is super-straightforward, some pitfalls but if you watch the video, no problem at all... well usually.
For whatever reason the rear shoe swap for my '04 Civic was a wrench-throwing, ninja'd-into-the-sheetrock sort of nightmare... an-hour's-work-begat-four sort of thunder...

Eric, I left a message on your shop phone a week ago. I am fairly local and want to make an appt to do a cam swap on my 2015 corvette z06. I think it will make a great video. I have done the install many times, but I thought bringing it to your shop and recording it would make a great video. I have dyno results for my current setup, and would get dyno results with the after set up. I know this isn't something you have done before in any of your videos, but I think it would make for a great video. Let me know...

Word of advice for the youngsters... see that spring he's taking off the parking brake shoes using needle nose pliers?
They make a hooked spring tool for that and they are relatively cheap. Use it. Needle nose pliers, especially on a more stiff spring can cause serious scars, I could show you mine and it's about 1/2 inch from my eyeball. Did I mention never pull TOWARDS yourself?
Some of us learned the hard way when we were 16.
