I've owned a Hyundai Accent for the last 13 years. 438.000 kilometers later on the same engine and the transmission, it is still a daily commuter in Canada.
I just end that sentence after "NEVER BUY". Is a Toyota or Honda really that much more expensive than some goofy Korean car? I'd buy a V6 Camry with 100,000 miles on it, before I'd ever buy a brand new Kia/Hyundai anything...
KIA’s are great-under the model of how they operate their business. KIA is far more interested in leasing you a car for three years and then having you get into whatever the next current year model is. We were KIA people when I was young and dumb. Leased a 2017 Sorento with no issues, owned a 2011 Soul for about 5 years with little issue, leased a 2020 Soul with no apparent issue. But, what can I say-aside from the ‘11 soul, we never put over 30,000 miles on the other two. Then I went and bought a Honda Odyssey with 100,000 on it, and a Toyota Solara with 129,000 on it, and they do their thing like they’re brand new still.
Oh yeah, around 2005, the last time we needed cars, my partner (female) had wrecked her 1995 Nissan Sentra and the insurance totalled it. But she didn't know what car to replace it with so she asked me. I talked her into a Silver 2001 V6 Solara with maybe 80,000 miles on it. A few months later I bought a 2002 Camry V6 with 66,000 miles on it. Both cars $15,000 each, out the door. 20 years later her Solara has over 260,000 miles and my Camry has 204,000. Neither car has needed any major repairs, just the expected timing belt + water pump replaced, alternator or two, a starter, and brake jobs. The first time the Solara needed the timing belt @100,000 miles I just did it myself, same for the Camry. Both cars have the same 1FMZE engine and same transmission, which has its own drain plug and an ATF dipstick, so she had her ATF flushed once, and i've just done a drain and refill every year or two (the transmission takes EXACTLY 3 quarts to refill, which is amazing to me - Toyota seems to think of everything when they build a car!) Both cars still running and driving, and passing smog every time. The A/C on the Camry still works as new.
@@humanchannel9421 it is, but it’s basically Kia’s business model, and people like *new* stuff. So, they cough up the $3K down payment and get their brand new whatever at $300/mo and just keep doing that forever. I’ll never lease a vehicle again. I’m hoping I never finance one again (or if I do it’s an immediate pay it off scenario). I’m much happier to buy something used for cash now-but it did take me a while to learn and get here.
@@humanchannel9421leasing cars,if you have the money is amazing. I beat the crap out of a car for a few years, put 150K miles on it then drop it off and get a new one and do it all over again.
We still have our 2004 suzuki xl7 at 184,000 miles. Same 2.7L V6 and 5 speed automatic tranny. Only replaced the crankshaft oil seal twice and ac compressor and alternator once in it's lifetime. The best part, no monthly car payments.
Hyundai/Kia cars made in Korea or other Asian countries are reliable. Its only those manufactured in US Alamaba plant that have problems with engines, due to engine shavings left behind during the manufacturing process.
In my country Russia most cars (50%) used in taxis are hyundai 1.6 AT accent AT (solaris), or KIA 1.6 AT RIO(same engine), and they basically NEVER break down, no matter what... I've seen one 2016 Solaris recently with 767k km(~400+k miles), and it never breaks down!!!!!!! The secret is all behind removing catalyst, this thing is cheaply made and very unreliable, so when it clogged in, it destroys fast and engine blows quick by its particles, so be aware of that. Even car mechanics say: "If you're gonna buy solaris or rio, then you'll forget about car service" lol
If you get a foreign car actually made in the country of origin you can usually get a pretty decent car. A Japanese car made in Japan. A Korea car made in Korea. Etc.
I’ll stick with my 30 year old Ciera. Everything that went wrong with it happened years ago. Wiring harnesses, sensors and pigtail connectors to the sensors, Alternator and radiator, and water pump, AC compressor. Now at 148K, a little old church lady named Dorothy bought it new, in cash, as the elder Greatest Generation folks would do, no loans, no credit cards. She drove it to her church 3-4 days a week, the grocery store once a week, and frequent the elementary school where her granddaughter was attending. 34k miles in 12 years, 🤣😂 Daddy bought it from her and handed it to me when he retired from driving at age 90. At that point it had 67K. Two weeks after Daddy went home to God, it ran rough and conked out, diagnostic showed it was the primary wiring harness off the Ignition Control Module. $25 later it ran like new. Earlier this year, it would stall out after running for 10 min., wouldn’t restart until it cooled off, then repeat same issue. No error codes . $34 2nd crank shaft position sensor, back to running like new. Paints faded but that has nothing to do with the running of the motor. Frequent oil and transmission services keep it happy. Insurance low, parts available.
My sister bought a Suzuki right before they folded. Still drives it. Not sure the model but 4 door, sporty looking, not bad. Hasn't had much for issues as far as I know. She takes care of her vehicles, having maintenance and issues fixed when needed. As it ages more, it's gonna get tough finding parts.
Teaching both my sons to drive stick on a 2000 Tacoma. We as Dads need to mandate our sons drive stick and they will come back unfortunately there’s not that many of us
My friend kept saying he bought a 91 Celica for 500$, but it didn't have any markings on it or a functional odometer. Turned out to be a Chevy Corsica that was falling apart at the seams from corrosion to the point I could see the road passing through the floor.
I got a 2011 Honda Accord with an automatic transmission, and there's a high pitch whine that I hear around 3500-4000rpms when it shifts gears up until 4th gear. It's annoying, but the car works fine so I live with it.
I had 2 engine replacements at 48k with a sorento. I take very good care of my cars and have always owned Honda/toyota cars which made it to 300k+ with regular maintenance. I decided to purchase the sorento due to their price but that was a huge mistake. They do not honor the warranty unless you are in the process of hiring a lawyer and getting corporate involved. Never again will I buy a Kia/Hyundai. I have seen way too many fail. I advised a couple of friends to stay away and they did not listen. Now they are dealing with high oil consumption problems and the dealership stated it’s normal. 1 quart of oil every 500miles is not normal🤣. Stay away from that company at all cost. A side note, not all Toyotas and Hondas nowadays are the best either. Their quality has gone downhill with these newer turbo engines. Mazda makes good cars as well imo. Just do your homework before making your purchase. Maintenance also goes a long way, just not for Kia/Hyundia cars.
maybe im a special case but even with the late shifting issues my 13 elantra is at 212k miles and still not burning oil and ive rarely had any issues with it
Scotty, I think ALL of the Hyundia/KIA owners in the USA who've had NO reliability issues are in your comments section tonight. There's at least 8 to 10 of them. These are the guys you want as your wingmen when you go to the casino for a weekend!
One of the obvious signs you are dealing with a low IQ individual is if they counter generalizations derived from data with personal anecdote. Example: Person A: "Statistically, Chinese people are short." Person B: "You're wrong because I know a tall Chinese person!"
One of the most certain marks of low intelligence: responding to a general statement as if it applied personally. Scotty: After working on thousands of cars, I can say manufacture XYZ makes endless moneypits. Imbecile: Well, I own an XYZ that hasn't broken down, therefore YOU ARE WRONG!
Scotty talks averages and based on data available online the average XYZ vehicle will turn into a money pit. You must be the lucky one to get a good one 😅
Well, the 3 brands that popped into my head immediately when I saw the thumbnail were Fiat, Mercedes, BMW, and Volkswagon (I threw in an VW for free).

German cars are more reliable, than most American cars if you take care of them. They had issues in early 2000 due to significant reduction in emissions requirement in EU, but since then they became a lot more reliable. I had diesel Passat with a manual transmission, zero issues even at 300k miles. I have Golf R with 160k - zero issues, runs like new. Mercedes mechanically is very well made. BMWs are good now too. Of course if you take care of them. Oil changes every 5k miles, qualified service, original parts. They are very complex technically, so they require proficient maintenance.
My 2005 Prius is easy to work on, has 193,000 miles and gets an average of 42mpg. Other than replacing the battery not long after I got it from GreenBean battery for $1500( covered for life) I do regular maintenance.
I have a KIA- Soul- 2018. 1.6l engine. slow. but with a 6speed shift Trans. only thing i could find at the time. was looking for a Mazda 3 with a manual . could not find it at the time. KIA is paid off. Not getting rid of it for a several more years. 57000 Miles on it right now.
My Ford Focus used to get 35mpg and it wasn't even a hybrid. That's why I never wanted the Fusion Hybrid because it would only get 5 more mpg anyway. Wasn't worth all the pain of dealing with the batteries and other items involved in owning a used hybrid.
Had a J made Accord back in college. Auto window broke in Mo 1, ABS module tracked in Y1, stereo / antenna / electronics went in first 3, both CV joint replacements in 5-7 yrs, bad cheap rusty mufflers in yr 7, interior plastic cracking and falling apart in yr 8, timing belt in yr 9, exterior paint falling apart by yr 10, A/C broke, replaced condenser in 10, spark plug electric wiring in 12 yr….. worst car I have ever had in my life. F*** Hondas.
For that low miles it should be getting better MPG then 33. My step moms Prius is a 2010 with 265k miles original battery but it’s starting to go out it constantly charging itself and that’s still getting 42mpg when it used to get 57
My 02 Kia Optima had a horrible AC that broke many times and had O2 sensors go out all the time. This car is 12 years newer and still has the same problems.
I tried to talk my friend out of buying a Kia Seltos but she wasn't having any of it. I told her to get a Rav4 but it was too expensive for her. she's gonna be sorry
I own a 2023 Suzuki Vitara heard good things about them and they also partnered with Toyota back in 2018 to develop their hybrid system so far it’s not bad
I had a Suzuki Swift with the sport trim and 5 speed. I bought it used with 90k on it. I drove the crap outta that thing. Put standard maintenance into it and a gas tank and drove that near 50mpg to 183k miles. Right up till the lower control arm mounting pads rotted off the chassis... Sold the motor and trans for $300 and scrapped the unibody...
Bought a used Suzuki Samurai I think it was in 86'. Loved that thing, of course I was about 40 yrs younger then so who cared about the ride? lol But seriously, it went great in the snow in 4WD and we got lots of snow in Northern Ohio. Took excellent care of it, always looked sharp and a few of my friends ended up buying Samurais. Kinda wish I'd kept it but I had three other cars and no room for a 4th in the garage. Fun little vehicle for sure! Paid 5,500 for it, sold it to my ex who drove it for years after that.
On Hyundai I have noticed it skipping over 2nd gear to 3rd on very light throttle. Nothing alarming just thst the engine is not under load. Three selectable drive modes and powertrain drivet adapted software. But the one I drove was a 2021.
If I'm correct the XL-7 Suzuki was on a GM platform with a 3.6 engine. I know my Equinox Sport used the same alternator and front drive shafts fit it as well
My wife has a 2013 Kia Soul now with 350k... still drive like new as I maintain it myself. It has the non GDI engine and its a tank. So easy to service. Some friends have the GDI engine and they do break easily.
I had 2 Kia’s, never had a problem. I don’t think their designs or parts necessarily are the problem, I think the issues are at the factory. Just a dice roll if you get one put together by a good worker
@@shalashaskaa8 I'd say you got lucky. Not only do most have mechanical issues but since kids went on TikTok showing how easy they are to steal most insurance companies won't cover Kia owners in some parts of the country.
So I own a Hyundai Santa. Fe 2020 2.5 Turbo bought new in Spring 2021 with 44,000 miles now should I trade in for a Toyota RAV4 hybrid or Prime or should I should just keeping paying of loan till spring 2026 and drive it till it becomes to expensive to maintain in 2028? Scotty is always making me like a dope for buying an American made Hyundai here in GA….😮
If you buy a used Kia, the warranty is 60,000 miles, not 100,000. My engine failed at 70,000 miles on my Kia Sorrento and since i bought it used, they didn’t cover my new engine.
Hyundai recommends changing gear oil on CVTs at 40-50,000mi. But if you wait longer than 10,000mi between changes, the gearbox becomes a throwaway item, by self-destructing.
These are very old cars - he is correct about the 2008 Corolla - I see more of them then the designs that came after it - they are getting rusty here is all but running like tops.
I wouldn't say Suzuki makes bad cars because they make great motorcycles and I know people who have had them and had nothing but good experiences. Having said that I do agree that with the car line being supported getting critical parts is getting to be a challenge and you need a mechanic who can work magic with mismatched parts.
I don’t drive a lot of miles…so I don’t need a hybrid vehicle….under 7000 miles per year….probably 5000. The savings from fuel is not there for me…. But a quality ride will be fine for what I spend in fuel. You can’t buy a quality RAV4 for $35.000…they build a super cheap SUV for a lot of money.
Hey Scotty was thinking about buying a truck what are some of the things I should be looking for when looking at these used trucks should I bring along some kind of scan tool or should I take it to somebody that can do it for me and give me any kind of codes or stuff
Seatbelts, Catalytic converters, any kind of pollution control system, electric parking breaks, etc. Oh, and if your car burns a quart of oil a week just keep adding.
Kia/Hyundai are not for people who keep their cars for a long time.
Месяц назад+4
If you clean valves and injectors every 30k, there should be no problem. My neighbor used hybrid Optima for Uber during 7 years, it is now on 3xx k miles and still runs without major issues and both engine and gearbox are original and run well. Oil change every 5k.
2018 Elantra here, with 142,000 miles, no issues at all. Check oil weekly, and change your oil within 5000, miles. Simple. I may have a Unicorn Hyundai.
At least Suzuki knows how to make motorcycles. Last batch of Suzuki cars and SUVs are nothing more than rebadged Daewoo cars and GM crossovers. Suzuki Kisashi needed more power
HEY SCOTTY, big fan, I got a questions, I have a 2003 VW Jetta 2.0L Manual car, Any advise related to "Fuel Additives"? , Here in mexico everytime I fill gas, they ask me if I want to buy a Fuel Additive. Thanks.
Or, i mean, just don't buy new unless you have that kind of disposable income to buy a new car every year or two. If you need value, just get a 90s honda or a geo. No brand is ideal nowadays.
Ha. I have a 92 Geo Metro Sprint LSI. Car is a blast to drive gets 57 MPG. Not a race car but fun. Put a new canvas top on it. It needs new door gaskets yet. Gets regular oil changes had transmission flushed. It came from Nevada so paint is a little faded. It sat in my back yard for 7 years. Daughter said haul it away but it still turned over first crank up. So I kept it. LOL.
@@sharonclevenger3734dang I'd keep it too. I remember looking at a 93 Geo new at dealership and now I have pangs of regret seeing your reply. Won't say what I chose instead but it was a big big mistake.
With Hyundai/Kia, it was paint and rod bearing issues a few years back. Im guessing the company let the mfg details slip because of deference to MBAs/CFO/HR.
Guys please help me I'm so confused, which one is better Kia Sportage hybrid SUV 2024 ( although kia's engine problems people liked that car so far) or Ford focus titanium steel sedan automatic diesel 2024 with 1.5 ecoblue engine, yes I'm living in turkey, Ford still buying focus sedan here, if you are read my comment please answer to me.
I have friends and family members who bought new Lexus, Ford, Acura, Honda, Toyota, and Subaru, KIA, Mazda...they get recall letters every few weeks. No such thing as a good new car. They are all pretty much disposable, poorly made crap.
Remember Scotty Suzuki replaced DAEWOO so the bar was not that high & they were both GM affiliates there low end that got the old technology like the 10 year old Cadillac stuff I sold both 😂😂
Worst car I've ever had was a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder. The engine turned the oil into Jello at 30k, and yes I changed the oil at recommended intervals. I flushed the oil the best I could and traded that piece in since Nissan wouldn't honor the warranty. Apparently this was an issue not unique to me as there's other's online with the same issue.
I have a 2009 Honda Insight with 223000 klm on the clock. Original battery which does 20 kilometres per litre which is 47 American miles per gallan . So there's something reaaly wrong with that Kia.

The A/C on the Camry still works as new.
hyundai KIA sales person targets young people and really old people.
because they dont know anything. they think hyundai is honda.
Running around leasing cars is literal brain-rot behavior.
The Suzuki XL-7 was made at the CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, alongside the Chevy Equinox and Pontiac Torrent at that time.
I don't know about y'all, but knowing that - I feel so much better now. lol
2013 Hyundai Accent 1.6 GDi/Manual stick. No problem at all. The car has 90k miles. My car was made in Korea.
2014 Hyundai Elantra GT made in Korea - no issues - nothing broken

Yet another reason to buy a 94 Toyota Celica.
@@DanielE-dk1ws
Those reasons just keep stacking up, don't they?
I'm surprised his tires haven't dry rotted yet on that magnificent piece of engineering.
I am surprised you are still making car payments on your 2014 Kia Soul that you couldn't afford to pay cash for in the first place.
😂
My friend kept saying he bought a 91 Celica for 500$, but it didn't have any markings on it or a functional odometer. Turned out to be a Chevy Corsica that was falling apart at the seams from corrosion to the point I could see the road passing through the floor.
Sounds like your friend was very intelligent.
I got a 2011 Honda Accord with an automatic transmission, and there's a high pitch whine that I hear around 3500-4000rpms when it shifts gears up until 4th gear. It's annoying, but the car works fine so I live with it.
KIA killed in action... friends of mine have have had blown engines at 50000 miles. KIA told them that they will not honor the warranty 😢
Maintenance also goes a long way, just not for Kia/Hyundia cars.
yes, my engine failed with only 70,000 miles on my Kia Sorrento.
Problem is the burn oil early people don't realize till the Engine blows
I have a kia Stinger 2019 with 54k miles. Best car I ever had
maybe im a special case but even with the late shifting issues my 13 elantra is at 212k miles and still not burning oil and ive rarely had any issues with it

Example: Person A: "Statistically, Chinese people are short." Person B: "You're wrong because I know a tall Chinese person!"
that's amazing that both owners of "trouble-free" Korean cars were available for writing comments.
they are troll from skorea.
Sometimes I'm glad that I have crank windows in my Ford Focus with 296k miles
Had an old pre acquisition Volvo. Built like a tank. Regret getting rid of it.
My 2009 kia spectra just rolled over to 160,000 and only ever needed one O2 sensor replaced a couple years ago, which I did myself.
Friend has a 2017 Sonata that caught on fire while her mechanic was driving it after a maintenance schedule. 🔥🔥🔥
GO WITH HONDA . I AM ON MY THIRD WITH 409K
What models and years?
I have a 2006 Odyssey with 265,000 miles as my daily. 😃
Honda fit first 2 generations are the best
Honda they rust I used to buy them.
Thanks Scotty for alerting the public (us) about that kind poor designs that endup creating many problems!
I just financed an awd Camry hybrid. I like it but just concerned about the longevity of the hybrid battery. I hope I made the right call.
CVT transmissions belong on lawnmowers 😊
Well, darn! Friend bought a new Kia in 2019 and cant afford to buy another car . Guess they're stuck with it. Fingers crossed there are no problems
At one point Scotty will realize the Suzuki XL7 is clearly a Chevy Equinox rebadge....
For the last 3 years of its production.
It's not a rebadge though, it's not 1:1 identical. Very similar, probably share 90% of the parts, but it's not a rebadge.
Proton try to rebage Suzuki but Malaysian won't buying it.

Lots of old Hyundai on the roads in Australia, but always look like they will fall apart any time.

If you buy a used Kia, the warranty is 60,000 miles, not 100,000. My engine failed at 70,000 miles on my Kia Sorrento and since i bought it used, they didn’t cover my new engine.
Yeah you MUST buy it certified to get the remainder of the 10 year/ 100k mile warranty

I see a lot of Suzuki jeeps/suvs on the streets in South Korea.
Hyundai recommends changing gear oil on CVTs at 40-50,000mi. But if you wait longer than 10,000mi between changes, the gearbox becomes a throwaway item, by self-destructing.
Darn.. I really really want a new Kia k5 ..I wonder when Scotty will get his hands on one
That Suzuki has 200k almost miles and engine and transmission is solid...
i owned a lot of cars inculding top brands and my best one so far is my volvo xc90 2020
A new shell 😂😂😂 I work for a dealership and manufacturers don’t rebuild anymore, they replace because it’s much more cost efficient!
Suzuki makes great outboard engines
I don’t drive a lot of miles…so I don’t need a hybrid vehicle….under 7000 miles per year….probably 5000.
The savings from fuel is not there for me….
But a quality ride will be fine for what I spend in fuel.
You can’t buy a quality RAV4 for $35.000…they build a super cheap SUV for a lot of money.
Hey Scotty was thinking about buying a truck what are some of the things I should be looking for when looking at these used trucks should I bring along some kind of scan tool or should I take it to somebody that can do it for me and give me any kind of codes or stuff
in my country Kia Morning 2004 still runs well
Scotty: '....seatbelts, we don't really care about that, its not that important'
WHAT!?!?!?
Seatbelts, Catalytic converters, any kind of pollution control system, electric parking breaks, etc. Oh, and if your car burns a quart of oil a week just keep adding.
Who knows why there's a seatbelt sensor but they're probably fine
Context is key bud
Kia/Hyundai are not for people who keep their cars for a long time.
If you clean valves and injectors every 30k, there should be no problem. My neighbor used hybrid Optima for Uber during 7 years, it is now on 3xx k miles and still runs without major issues and both engine and gearbox are original and run well. Oil change every 5k.
got a 13 elantra limited here and its got 212k miles on it with rarely an issue but i may be an outlier i dunno
Same with Subaru. Drive it 50k miles, then trade it in.
they are if you take care of them
2018 Elantra here, with 142,000 miles, no issues at all.
That sucks, glad we never got those ones here in Australia, we only got the real Japanese designed and manufactured Suzuki's here.
