  • Even 25 years later, The Lost World still gets crapped on unfairly. In defense of this underrated sequel, I'm responding to the Nostalgia Critic's classic review. Below is Doug's full original video. Feel free to watch it for the full context. Although I do respond to as much as I can, cuts and trims are made to avoid copyright infringement and to get to the main points. If anything seems misconstrued, it was unintentional. #jurassicpark #dinosaurs

I interpreted the San Diego "rampage" more like a wild animal being thrown in a completely unknown, scary environment where it feels threatened as well as frustrated by the absense of it's baby and mate. This makes the animal more agressive than usual because it's scared. I've seen videos of elephants and even a leopard doing the same in indian towns.

But,his asset for impressing his investors breaks free and causes not only the deaths of several people, but thousands if not millions of dollars in property damage. Speaking of karma, they should have kept the infamous deleted scene that explained how Junior Rex got his leg broken:
After Roland & Ajay took him from
the Rex Nest and set him up as bait for the Tyrannosaur Buck, Ludlow showed up; drunk after he 'opened a case of scotch and had a good day'. And as he argued with Roland on whether the plan will work or not, Ludlow got spooked by something that ran past his leg which caused him to fall on top of Junior and breaking his leg, which clearly upsets Roland (with him quoting George Orville in the 4-issue comic book adaptation).
Had they kept the deleted scene and the original music cue "Ludlow's End", then Ludlow getting injured by Buck
and being Junior's first kill would have been much more satisfying.

Funny to see that I wasn't the only one who had trouble telling Ludlow and Ajay apart. I think the film could've built the relationship between Ajay and Roland a bit more, to make us more understanding on what caused Tembo's development in the end. When I watched the film the first time, I always thought Ajay was Ludlow in the few scenes he was in and since his name was only mentioned once until his death, I had trouble to even remember who Ajay was, when Roland told us he didn't make it. Still, even as a kid I understood that Ajay apparently was a friend of Roland who died during the expedition, but I had no idea who it was or if we even got to see him.
The deleted scene that shows them getting hired for the expedition would've gone a long way in making his death more meaningful. Also nothing against the actor they chose, but I think in a film that has mostly darker scenes with less lighting in it, the creators should've gone for someone who looks a bit more different to one of the other main characters or at least give him a unique outfit with a hat, so the audience can tell the two better apart.
I love The Lost World Jurassic Park, I think it's a great movie and enjoy it everytime I watch it. It has interesting themes, multi layered characters and great special effects, soundtrack, cinematography etc. I even think Ludlow is more than a mustache twirling villain. Yes his motivation was money, but not necessarily for himself. He got the leading position for a company in huge financial trouble and his goal was to get his company out of bancrupcy. Sure in the end he probably didn't want that because he cared about ppl losing their jobs or something along those lines, but he is a man who tries to do his job as head of ingen. Also compared to most other villains in the jurassic franchise his plan isn't completly idiotic and would've worked just fine, if the other partie of our heroes wouldn't have intervened. As far as we know in the movies the Ingen Hunters tried to stay away from dangerous animals and areas on the island. If they only captured a few herbivores and relatively harmless predators like the compis they could've saved the company financially. And even if some of those would get loose on the mainland, its not that they would immediatly start to eat people.

In TLW's case, is it so offensive that a film about genetic engineered animals being exploited for profit might take a conservation and preservation stance?

Small little criticism here, Roland’s gun is not a shotgun and those are not shotgun shells, but are instead .500 Nitro rifle rounds, which is pretty close to being the baddest hunting round money can buy, and at the time, was second only to the unwieldy .50 BMG. But your note of Van Owen’s mentality in removing the bullets from the casing (which is also a genius idea that often goes under the radar) was a very fair assessment.

The Lost World is one of those movies that I like when I first watch it, then change my opinion because of a few people, and then started to like it again for myself with the reviews of other people. However, I still prefer Crichton's novel. I liked the idea of the predatory dinosaurs having their established territories, which are respected by each animal, and the protagionists running into one after another. The Rexes don't follow the hunters into the long grass which are infested with raptors (like how in the novel the Rexes and Raptors tried to stay clear from the Carnotarus' territory, despite the Rexes trying to pursue and the Raptors being bloodthirsty).

JP3- a noticeable fall from grace with only the Spinosaurus and the Raptor scenes being on par with the first 2
Jurassic World- an amazing movie with a bunch of awesome new concepts that bring JP to the modern generation
Fallen Kingdom- a great transitional film that clearly continues from where the last film left off, with easily my favorite dinosaur of all time and his theme song.

I don’t hate Doug Walker or his respective character, either. But yeah, what Doug’s show spawned is a whole online video genre that, IMHO, needs to make like a non-avian dinosaur and go EXTINCT.
Yeah, if it wasn’t apparent already, I’m not into so-called “review” videos that DON’T review films in a constructive, well-thought-out manner, but just flat-out *antagonize* them unnecessarily, take them WAY too seriously, or just over-emphasize humor *over* criticism just to get more likes & views.

I want to know what went wrong, what went right, and if I should see it myself if I haven’t already. And yes, it can be fun to absolutely tear into a shitty movie, but even then I feel like people who honestly review obviously bad things do a far better job than the raging neckbeards who just draw attention to themselves and get views by being insufferable in their absolutely brutal criticism of every project they come across.

This is one reason why, in my opinion, the Angry Video Game Nerd series has mostly aged better than the Nostalgia Critic series (in fact, as I rewatched this particular NC episode here, it felt like watching an early video by The Irate Gamer).
When it comes to video games, it is a lot easier to find things which are objectively bad about them (like broken controls, glitches, inconsistent mechanics, non-functional A.I., missing quality-of-life features, and anti-customer practices). So James Rolfe has more material for his character to angrily criticize, while still feeling agreeable to most audiences.
Also, when you are trying to complete a video game, while simultaneously having to negotiate its flawed/broken/unbalanced design choices, that adds another layer of frustration which is absent in passive media like books/films/shows. Therefore, it can help the AVGN better toe the line, between ranting in an over-the-top and immature way for comedic purposes, while having the rants’ basis still be relatable enough for the character to be sympathetic. In contrast, unless a movie or utterly filled with egregious flaws, it seems like the NC more often needs to contrive things to be mad about, in order to create the same quantity of rant jokes.

Ok, here's the deal with the T. rex chasing the humans in the ravine while "apparently" running slow: she was trying to single out one individual that she could chomp down on, but all of the humans were huddled close together while they ran. She was clearly looking for a straggler to pick out from the crowd. Also, the fact that they were running through a ravine and not a wide open space would also mean that she had to be careful while chasing her prey. I mean, she could've easily tripped on something without warning, or scratch against the ravine wall, and with little room to move around, it made sense for her to not go so fast. The T. rex in the first film, on the other hand, had a wide open road while chasing after the jeep, with little stopping her, which explains why she was able to keep pace with the car.

In his Fallen Kingdom reaction/review, he mocked the movie for playing the Brachiosaurus death as a sad scene because the dinosaurs were just trying to kill everybody the scene before. This is obviously wrong bc the dinosaurs mostly fled the volcano and that’s also wrong bc obviously Brach is a herbivore. “Veggiesaurus, Lex!”
On his Twitch stream, I pointed out that the Brach was a herbivore and didn’t try to kill anybody. I agree with most of the things you say, but the critic is right about one thing. It is true that the dinosaurs sense of smell gets conveniently forgotten when the plots needs it. Both in the original movie and the sequels, the raptors and rexes can only smell people when the script wants them to.

The lost world. Possibly the best sequel to Jurassic park.

When will you release your review of Camp Cretaceous Season 5?
Edit: Random Opinion, I personally think that Jurassic Park 3 had SLIGHTLY better effects with Lost World being a close second. Emphasis on slightly and close second.
2nd Edit: While Dominion is one of my favorite installments, I will admit that the first JP and TLW are better and that Dominion’s Locust plot was a stupid brain dead decision/time waster.

The Lost World has its flaws but miraculously Doug managed to create an even more flawed review.

They pressured Crichton into writing a sequel and then ignored 99% of it.

THANK YOU. I enjoy Doug's reviews, but he often relies on hyperbolic criticism for entertainment value, and this (admittedly old) review is a perfect example of that. I love Spielberg's two Jurassic films, and TLW had always been my favorite of the two when I was a kid.

I left this comment on the last version of the video so I'll repost it here in case anyone wanted to know.
Roland's gun isn't actually a shotgun, it's a double rifle. Double rifles were originally intended for hunting elephants and as an experienced game hunter, Roland would have known it was a good choice for something as big as the Rex and also is a subtle hint at his personality since his main weapon was intended for hunting an endangered species and is impractical for anything else. Just like him it's only purpose on the island is to kill a Rex for the trophy.

Insulting The Lost World is insulting Spielberg and Stan Winston's amazing animatronics as if their work was worth nothing. I'd like to see these critics make a better movie. He didn't even do a competent review. 😂

Hot take: The people that consistently complain about the JW trilogy are WAY more annoying than the people who like them. (But if you think the movies are bad that’s fine)

I'd argue with the scene of Rexy escaped, ate the lawyer, and sniffed Alan and Lex that it should also be noted that it was raining at the time. Rain could easily mask their scent from Rexy as rain has a distinct odor, Petrichor.
Edit: 30:04 I really have to disagree here because the T. rex was chasing the group through a narrow raven, thus it was walking instead of running because it was trying not to fall or bumped into a wall. Rexy in the first movie had wide open space to run. Not really much a valid criticism as you said considering the setting they were in.

A little thought I had about Eddie Carr (The doughy guy) yes he’s a character clearly there to be eaten, a redshirt with a rifle. But honestly I think they did a decent job giving him some character before his death.
Like with Nick he made it clear he was there for the money, as a tech savvy guy he was understandably annoyed by anyone who didn’t treat his equipment correctly, his description of the deadliness of his rifle is delivered emotionless and matter of fact; he’s not a gun loving lunatic, he’s a professional describing what he’s brought to keep everyone safe.
He isn’t the most talkative or social but when his team were in trouble, he took action and did his best to save them and succeeded even though it cost him his life, he could’ve been another Donald Gennaro running for his life leaving everyone in danger before getting eaten anyway.
Malcolm said it best: “Just fed? I assume you're talking about Eddie? You might show a little more respect, the man saved our lives by giving his.”

Also, look at his expression when he saw the dinosaurs being mistreated. Or when he handed the phone over to Kelly so that she could talk to Malcolm. Clearly, he's not an asshole.

Jurassic Films Favorite to Least Favorite:
    - Jurassic Park
    - The Lost World: Jurassic Park
    - Jurassic World
    - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (plot wise; “Dominion” is more entertaining to me but I’ll admit it’s plot, at least from the villain’s side, is flimsy in comparison)
    - Jurassic World: Dominion
    - Jurassic Park III

Honestly when I watched his video so I understand what is going on, all I saw was this random guy attacking TLW, I was like "ugh, when is it gonna be over so I can watch red raptor writes's video?" But honestly I get SOME (only a few tbh) of the things he criticized but the movie was amazing, half the things he said didn't make sense, and he attacked poor Jeff Goblum just for the way he talks (I donno if that's how he really talks or is it just acting, but don't make fun of people just for the way they talk)
