It was our first experience buying food off the streets as we are so accustomed to the grocery stores. I just washed the remaining ones and ate the entire thing and it was amazing!
About 40 years ago when our two sons were Davis‘s age, we took a big trip to the national parks out west. Instead of devices, they each had books which they were so totally into we had to almost force them to look out the windows. Finally got to the point where, when we mentioned the view, they would say ooh and aw, never even take their eyes off their book.
it's the same, just a different media source. He is getting some, so I can't be too upset if he chooses not to see the beauty around him. Thanks for your comment!
I enjoyed watching this. Portie is my Fav location on my island. My family been has been frequenting Portie since the 1970's. It is where we spend long weekends and holidays since I was a child and now where I take my family. It is relaxing, not too Touristy and lots of off the beaten path places to explore. There are certain experiences in life that you lock away for a rainy miserable day, experiences you will never forget and never want to forget because it warms your heart and take you to that happy place. Well my entire experience in Portland is filled with nothing but happy memories and I am happy you got to experience it. Safe Journeys and happy travels.
We will treasure these memories forever! The sail to get there was Davis’ longest passage and first time we really explored some place new. We had previously been to the more touristy Montego Bay, Falmouth and Negril by agree we like Port Antonio for the authenticity😊
@@Narcissist-d6g Yes, there is a very thin line between rustic, old world charm and dilapidated and the Town of Port Antonio is dilapidated. I don’t care how the parish council and the tourist board tries to spin this. The town is rundown and in need of proper planning and restoration back to its original state. To make it truly rustic and full of old world charm. I get scared when Jamaicans use the word development.
Thank you very much! After working full time for so long it really hard to slow down and just enjoy the moment but we are working hard to do just that 😊
The meat pie is called Jamaican beef patty. Try the ginger bulla with cheese. Great seeing a channel finally in Jamaica. The best part of the apple is the skin
Words cannot express how much I love this channel. How is the boat work going? Is it as bad as they say? The way some people talk, you’re fixing a head and engine every day.

Great info! It really wasn’t a big deal for a 3 day rental just unexpected. This was our first time renting a car outside the US. Part of the fun is adapting to others way of life😊
Well done on shifting out of the comfort zone. You are giving your son an amazing experience and opportunity, such a gift! One of my favorite things to do was check out the local foods and grocery shops where we visited when we last cruised. We are getting ready to be back out there and excited. I very much enjoy your genuine nature!
We are becoming your biggest fans now. I guess leaving a comment on one of your videos tips us that way. We watch them as a family on Sunday mornings over coffee and it's our favorite thing. Something we discussed while watching today that I wanted to share: we love watching you ease into boat life because it's something we want to do in the next few years and wonder how hard it is, how do new people figure all this stuff out (with kid in tow too!). The magic you have going for you is bringing us along as you learn it all. Our favorite parts are watching you learn how to do the boat stuff (and less about the tourist stuff). Just feedback from one family. It's been awesome watching you try to fix things, failing, learning...understanding how long it takes to get stuff done, see how hard it was to hoist the sail...and even just docking in the marina! We were celebrating for you as you did it. 💪And Rob celebrating you was so sweet. ♥Also, just noticed you stated your budget of $4,300 a month in your video caption! AWESOME. It would be amazing to know how you're doing with that.
Wow! Thank you very much! Rob & I used to have the same Sunday morning routine for years! I want to show all the thing I had questions about - like how do you meet neighbors in an anchorage or what to bring for sundowners, what’s the check in process for each country and how many times are we really fixing things. It’s not easy watching back harsh words or stress but I hope it allows others to see what it’s really like. We appreciate you following along!!
Rob good onya Buddy for support and encouraging Shannon for her new found skills, you all have a long way to go and you are going need to support, love and foster each other, thank you for the advent in Jamaica also good to see that we have normal vehicle with the steering wheel on the correct side 😇👍🇺🇸🙏⛵️Take care and safe travels
The pie things are Patties and they are made with all sorts of fillings, beef and cheese sounds like you had, but you can get chicken, lobster, shrimp, soy, veggie depending on where you purchase from
It is so good to see you enjoying my home country of Jamaica, and in one of the nicer parishes(our version of a state) Portland, specifically Port Antonio, aka Portie the capital. Knowing the foods are unfamiliar and takes some time to get used to, along with the cringe moments when Jamaicans hear you mispronounce, describe an item incorrectly, or eat it in a way we would find strange, yet with time you learn. The Jamaican motto is "Out of Many, One People", so while deeply rooted in African culture, it is a combination of many cultures and global influence. For example, the Jamaican apple originated from Malaysia and our left-handed style of driving was handed down through our British colonial past. We look forward to the next visit and more happy exploring, along with happy sailing.
Wow- thank you for all that information! Yes, I need to do more research before we film but sometimes things just happen fast. I appreciate you taking the time to educate us😊

I just want him to look back and see how he really felt. He’s getting better about trying to enjoy himself know that he is realizing that no matter how miserable he is or makes us that we are not giving up on this adventure and he’s starting to enjoy things😊
I understand a lot of people are very concerned about visiting jamaica but as a jamaican living on the island I'm giving you my honest opinion jamaica definitely gets a bad press we definitely have a gang problem in jamaica but nothing compares to what reports in the press violence is everywhere and jamaica is no exception ask yourself this can jamaica be so dangerous and winning all these tourism awards for the 7th year in a row jamaica named the Caribbean leading destination and just last week jamaica won the award for the leading global destination in Berlin Germany at the most prestigious travel award show you can look it up sangster Airport in montego bay named the Caribbean best airport for the 17th year in a row allover the North coast of jamaica 4 mega resort and casino are under construction look these up the princess hotel and casino in green island Westmoreland is constructing a 2000 plus resort and casino over in montego bay hardrock hotel and casino is currently constructing another 2700 resort and casino three property will be at development hardrock hotel and casino, Ritz carlton and UNICO 77..in trelawney RIU are finishing up a 753 resort and in reading montego bay LCH group recently broke ground for the construction of 4 massive 28 floor buildings which will be the tallest buildings in the Caribbean by hight so ask yourself this again if jamaica is so dangerous will these massive investments will be taking place? and that's just the tip of the many developments ongoing in jamaica
We agree that it gets a bad wrap and a lot of cruisers avoid Jamaica. That’s why we wanted to show our positive experience. We talked to locals and they told us where to avoid due to gangs/violence and had no issues. Thanks again for your info😊
Jamaica very beautiful place, like all the carribean islands yes there is problems like ever were on earth, then American government telling people don't go some countries in the carribean, people on Utube type Kensington avenue that America doesn't want the world to see.look at new york now, the natives are trying to run.
Thank you! I should have been better prepared with the actual names but filming the food part was spur of the moment. Rob is still in love with the festivals!
Funny how the “travel advisory” seem to just push people out to travel more and experience more of the island instead of staying in the “comfort of the resorts”.
The advisory is important to educate citizens of potential danger, but honestly most people don't even read them. It just a warning and nothing to get upset about.
At Port Antonio, the crime rate is much lower than the other ports and cities on the island. We do heed travel advisories for countries and learn about where the high crime is located or where you can get caught up in turf wars and just steer clear of those areas. We LOVE Jamaica!!
From the southern Bahamas, it took us 4 days to arrive in Jamaica. We spent 9 days at Port Antonio. Not every day we explored. We had boat projects and just general housekeeping some days!
We never planned to stop in Jamaica but did to wait on better wind angle to sail to Panama. We had a date booked to transit the Panama Canal so we had to keep moving.
Part of this adventure is learning. Thank you for letting us know what it really is called! We have friends that make empanadas, but I know that is not what they were even though they are similar. Follow our journey and learn new things with us!
@@SailingParadiseFalls it wasn’t meant to be a dig. I honestly just hadn’t heard that before. I admire that you guys are going out of your comfort zone and aren’t afraid to try new things.
You didn't try ache and salt fish, oxtail, curry goat, peanut punch, etc. Did you even try the white rum with coke or punch? By the way, your first meal was bssically meat and sweet buns followed by fruits. Nonetheless, good on you for venturing out and respectfully blessing the locals with some business. ;)
Yes, we were easing into trying other foods. Originally, some of the crew only wanted to eat at popular chain restaurants but I told them that not why we are here. I couldn’t bring myself to try the salted fish or ox tail but I am going to try to branch out more. It’s hard to eat everything on limited time. Will just have to go back😊
@SailingParadiseFalls That's Jamaican KFC for sure. Always packed full despite the fact that majority of jamaican households cook twice per day every day except Fridays
Oh man! I try to look up Instagram and RUclips before but we never anticipated stopping. It was a happy accident to stumble upon Port Antonio as we were supposed to sail straight to Panama. Glad we did!
We do but we really try to limit tech time as it severely affects his attitude. His face would be in them all day if we would let him & he would miss half our trip🤣
Really enjoyed the video. How well-behaved boats kids are. Its so good for them to have a real life and learn instead of learning form a teacher that also diid not have experience. The area you drive through is like some areas in Europe, although no palm trees there. but the small steep roads in villages, very much Luxembourg, the Ardennes and some French areas. You drink diet coke? oeff, you better drink real coke (or obviously something else) and look at the rest of your diet. diet coke is nothing less but extremely bad. all alternative to sugars effect your cognitive thinking. And as for losing weight? it does not work. Just my five cents. Hapy sailing
We have found boat kids are more mature for their age than land based kids. They are given hefty responsibilities earlier in life and are able to deal with change. Davis has a hard time with change, but it's slowly sinking in that plans change in a heartbeat when you are on the ocean. You have to adapt and move with the situation and the journey and end result may not be what you originally planned. For instance, Jamaica was not an intended destination, but more of a stop over for weather!
oK OK , COOL ! BUT - -- - - ( LOL ) 1. dem call patty ( pattie ) NOT meat pie and NO they do NOT Taste like a Krystal ( gut bomb) ! lol they are fully of typically curried grd bf 2. Give the boy some KFC ! every JaAmerican know it the best !! 2, introduce him a JA girl him age and hiM neva want leave ! 3. you missed the boat by not loading up on "Ting" soda instead of Diet Coke ! 4. it NOT festivals ( plural ) as one or 20 it simply festival and much more dense than a puffy beignet , overall not bad for obviously 1st time visitors , Irie ! ohhh one last ting mi say - - - - - - - ROLL TIDE !
Roll Tide!! Our son is at Alabama, Our Daughter is at Auburn. Our older son is a hard core Georgia Fan, Shannon is a Gator and Rob (although he went to La Tech) pulls for LSU! Definitely an SEC house divided!! Thanks for the info on the patty! He's just starting to get into the liking girls (no longer gross). Festival. Got it. Yes, consistency is a bit different, but the taste is spot on for a beignet. Ting soda? Is it sugar free? Thanks for following our journey!!
SEC ! We shared your Awesome Video on the Facebook Group "RUclips Sailing Channels" as many there have a very negative misplaced stereotype of our beloved Jamaica , to fight that we also started a playlist we promote here on RUclips called "Sailing Jamaica for Cruisers" where we also shared your video for positive vibes ! Yes we know a bit about Jamaica as wife is from there and we have been many many times over 40 yrs + !! Diet Coke is very hard to find there ( reformed addict myself- very bad for you ! ) Ting is like USA "Squirt" - a full sugar grapefruit soda that is Yum ! especially w Jamaican overproof white rum ! Fair Winds , We Splash next Year ourselves - - - maybe we can catch up one day , but doubt it as we will be in a SLOW monohull ! lol , Fair Winds !@@SailingParadiseFalls
Although the word village is not used in Jamaica, small rural districts are villages by definition. They are not really wrong for calling them villages… it’s not a big deal
At least these folks could give a little credit on the country and give hope and less fear for future travelers. They went outside their bubble and explore. Sorry you guys had to drive on those terrible roads. Why Jamaica is still the slowest undeveloped country in the western hemisphere, everything falls back.to politicians😑
Ha!!! That’s funny! We saw several very lovely ladies walking down those mountain roads in heels on their way to church! They are rockstars! We had a great time in Jamaica and wish we had more time to explore😊
@@NATURALMYSTICMK what rubbish did i post.. You must not like to hear the truth or you just ignorant to society. Jamaica could do much much better, you probably think Anju cares about the country..
@@SailingParadiseFalls To be honest with you folks, you guys just don’t know what we goes through with the deep corruption and politicians on this little island, only if you knew Jamaica’s history!
@madtrain556 you are correct! We do not know the depth of how corrupt the govt and political environment. For sure they truly do not represent the vast majority of awesome citizens we met while on the island. Sadly, there are even places in the mainland USA that have the same things going on corruption and bad public resources (roads, sewer, water) as well. All in All, Jamaica is a wonderful country full of beautiful people!
That would have been helpful to know but we had no clue what it was supposed to taste like. I had to eat the others fast bc little mosquitoes loved them too!
@@SailingParadiseFalls I think you probably met the fruit flies. Next time wrap them in brown paper and allow them to ripen until they are dark purple. They will be sweeter. The mosquitos can be rather vicious in Jamaica.

I have never wanted to go to Jamaica because of the news stories of how dangerous it is. But wow! What a beautiful area you are exploring .
We never once felt threatened and we explored covered A Lot of miles! It’s a beautiful country!
I understand a lot of people are very concerned about visiting jamaica but as a jamaican living on the island
I'm giving you my honest opinion jamaica definitely gets a bad press we definitely have a gang problem in jamaica but nothing compares to what reports in the press violence is everywhere and jamaica is no exception ask yourself this can jamaica be so dangerous and winning all these tourism awards for the 7th year in a row jamaica named the Caribbean leading destination and just last week jamaica won the award for the leading global destination in Berlin Germany at the most prestigious travel award show you can look it up sangster Airport in montego bay named the Caribbean best airport for the 17th year in a row allover the North coast of jamaica 4 mega resort and casino are under construction look these up the princess hotel and casino in green island Westmoreland is constructing a 2000 plus resort and casino over in montego bay hardrock hotel and casino is currently constructing another 2700 resort and casino three property will be at development hardrock hotel and casino, Ritz carlton and UNICO 77..in trelawney RIU are finishing up a 753 resort and in reading montego bay LCH group recently broke ground for the construction of 4 massive 28 floor buildings which will be the tallest buildings in the Caribbean by hight so ask yourself this again if jamaica is so dangerous will these massive investments will be taking place? and that's just the tip of the many developments ongoing in jamaica
Don't go we don't want u
We agree that it gets a bad wrap and a lot of cruisers avoid Jamaica. That’s why we wanted to show our positive experience. We talked to locals and they told us where to avoid due to gangs/violence and had no issues. Thanks again for your info😊
Its safer than going to the USA. NO mass shootings here.
Wait until you get to New Zealand. Get a good Steak and Cheese pie. Look it up, its a thing.
We sadly won’t be stopping in New Zealand. Will spend about 3 weeks in Australia to dive the Great Barrier Reef then off to Indonesia 😊
Rastafari Jamaica. 1 love
We loved it too!
Nice 💚🩵🧡
😊⛵️🇯🇲
👏👏👏👍👍👍
Thank you!
This is how you travel
Thank you! We are enjoying it!
🤠👍
Thanks!
Jamaica very beautiful place, like all the carribean islands yes there is problems like ever were on earth, then American government telling people don't go some countries in the carribean, people on Utube type Kensington avenue that America doesn't want the world to see.look at new york now, the natives are trying to run.
There is crime and bad places everywhere! We enjoyed our time in Jamaica very much!
Its called Jamaican patties. Similar to sausage rolls or meat 🥧
Thank you! I should have been better prepared with the actual names but filming the food part was spur of the moment. Rob is still in love with the festivals!
It's called patty not pie😊
And ginger bulla 😊
Both MMMM Delicious!
Its safe to eat the skin of the apple
Yes, Rob was just being overly cautious. He’s calmed down a bit now 😉
What a good video of an awesome adventure thank you for sharing those beautiful smiles
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a fun 9 days!
You have to travel to Negril the beach there is nicer
That is the only place we haven’t been in Jamaica 😊
Funny how the “travel advisory” seem to just push people out to travel more and experience more of the island instead of staying in the “comfort of the resorts”.
The advisory is important to educate citizens of potential danger, but honestly most people don't even read them. It just a warning and nothing to get upset about.
We hed warnings but also know to be cautious. Coffee now comes with a warning🤣
At Port Antonio, the crime rate is much lower than the other ports and cities on the island. We do heed travel advisories for countries and learn about where the high crime is located or where you can get caught up in turf wars and just steer clear of those areas. We LOVE Jamaica!!
How long was the trip to jamaica
From the southern Bahamas, it took us 4 days to arrive in Jamaica. We spent 9 days at Port Antonio. Not every day we explored. We had boat projects and just general housekeeping some days!
@SailingParadiseFalls okay and I though you was gonna stay longer in jamaica
We never planned to stop in Jamaica but did to wait on better wind angle to sail to Panama. We had a date booked to transit the Panama Canal so we had to keep moving.
@SailingParadiseFalls oh great glad your family did stay and safe travels bro
"we sailed from Georgetown, Bahamas to Port Antonio, Jamaica with" no Immigation?
Not sure? We checked into Jamaica with Port Captain, immigration and health inspector but we’re not allowed to film that part.
I’ve never heard anyone refer to a Jamaican patty as a meat pie before lol
Part of this adventure is learning. Thank you for letting us know what it really is called! We have friends that make empanadas, but I know that is not what they were even though they are similar. Follow our journey and learn new things with us!
Where do you think it originated from?
@@SailingParadiseFalls it wasn’t meant to be a dig. I honestly just hadn’t heard that before. I admire that you guys are going out of your comfort zone and aren’t afraid to try new things.
Happens all the time. Every country has their version. Empanadas, pasties, steak n kidney pies etc.
Originated in England.
Will just have to go back😊
If you think about it oxtail is just beef and saltfish is just fish.. give it a try next time, I am sure you will enjoy!
Its call a beef patty
Thank you!
Yes it's call a beef patty
I can't believe u didn't get Davis the KFC😢😢😢
We are mean parents! Actually, we were going to but every time we stopped the place was beyond packed!
@SailingParadiseFalls That's Jamaican KFC for sure. Always packed full despite the fact that majority of jamaican households cook twice per day every day except Fridays
Plese come back to jamaica and link up with irena she has a youtube channle you will see all of jamaica on her channle
Oh man! I try to look up Instagram and RUclips before but we never anticipated stopping. It was a happy accident to stumble upon Port Antonio as we were supposed to sail straight to Panama. Glad we did!
oh davis...LOL
Our thoughts exactly!🤣
Portland is home of everything jerk. It started in Boston ,port Antonio.
We definitely ate our share of jerk!! I bought some seasoning and used it on the boat so far with chicken and pork and it was delicious.
It's a patty.
Thank you! I should have looked up the actual name but we really planned to film a tasting until last minute.
It call patty
Thank you very much!
Davis is not into these kinda things, and that’s okay. Let him chill somewhere else with some games
We do but we really try to limit tech time as it severely affects his attitude. His face would be in them all day if we would let him & he would miss half our trip🤣
Beef parties they are called
Thank you!
You don't peel jamaican apples.
We only peeled the first one and I just washed and ate the others. They were delicious!!
YOU ONLY HAD HALF THE FUN YOU NEEDED A GUIDE
We needed more time too😉
Really enjoyed the video.
Diet cola isn’t going to do you any harm. Google it. The Mayo Clinic, no less, says that a moderate amount, like one can per day is just fine.
oK OK , COOL !
Thank you so much for sharing our videos! Hopefully, we will be enjoying sundowners soon😊
There's no village in Jamaica, only district s,towns and cities..
Thank you for the info. I appreciate the clarification 😊
Although the word village is not used in Jamaica, small rural districts are villages by definition. They are not really wrong for calling them villages… it’s not a big deal
@@IrishJam93 Your opinion is irrelevant and there’s no village in Jamaica!!
@@northside3701 it’s not an opinion it is a fact but whatever you say boss.. you must know
At least these folks could give a little credit on the country and give hope and less fear for future travelers. They went outside their bubble and explore. Sorry you guys had to drive on those terrible roads. Why Jamaica is still the slowest undeveloped country in the western hemisphere, everything falls back.to politicians😑
We are a developing country. Nothing slow about us. We are the most advanced country in the caribbean. Get facts before posting rubbish.
John...dunce
When tourists complaining how bad the road is,you just have to shake your head. Embarrassing, good job waste man Anju and JLP..
..and all other PNP before him.
We were just surprised at the difference in roads. Not necessarily a bad thing. We enjoyed our time in Jamaica 😊
It's good to see you enjoyed your time in Jamaica. That apple needs to ripen a bit more.
Um yes! We met the fruit flies and that are vicious!!! Great tip with the bag😊
