    Reverse is lower gear ratio than first. Giving the engine enough ratio not to stall. My dad always told me, you really wanna pull something use reverse, most power to distance.

    Be happy no one was seriously injured! Look on the bright side, now that truck bed is no longer pristine, you can actually use the bed for hauling junk without worry of damage. Long term you probably should consider replacing 20-year-old, 400K truck with a hybrid (saves fuel/lowers operating cost) automatic transmission van or SUV. As BYD is popular there, maybe that's a safer alternative than the old truck. New motor vehicles often include advanced safety features like radar cruise control and lane-keeping assist, which makes driving a little easier and safer. Good luck and thanks for the content!

    James, you are very lucky to only have a few scratches on yourself and your truck. It could have been much worse. Count your lucky stars. I never start my car, especially a standard transmission, without being in the vehicle.
    As for your other accident, I never park in a parking lot where someone can easily back into the side of my car. So I choose my parking space accordingly.

  • @walking_in_the_shade
    @walking_in_the_shade 10 месяцев назад +1

    I get the "leave the front wheels straight" from my partner all the time when parking the car. I asked her why as I have never even thought about my wheel position before, she said it's bad for the hydraulics unless the wheels are straight when parked. Personally I think that reason is bollocks but I haven't been able to find anything definitive to press my case.

    Nissan has a clutch switch. You have to engage clutch to floor before ignition will engage as a safety, cannot start in gear. Surprised Toyota doesn’t have this safety, maybe yours is broken or disengaged.

    Ute's have a very low diff ratio. Combined with a light to rear end, I would say the wheels spun every time it kangaroo hopped, allowing the engine to start rather than stall.

    Hi bud. Yep, that’s normal. The truck was kangarooing in reverse. Reverse is the lowest ratio in the gearbox so although you might see sometimes they do it going forward a bit before stalling when in reverse the gearing favours the engine more so it can happen, if it stalls the momentum kinda bump starts it again so it just goes on and on. Nothing wrong with the truck. Glad your ok, best from Yisa and I.

    Starter motor spun they flywheel with the clutch engaged. The engine started since it was spinning. The truck uses an injector pump driven by the engine and hence it was running

    • @jamesabroad8589
      @jamesabroad8589  10 месяцев назад +1

      Clutch and accelerator weren't engaged. Just wouldn't stall. Lower gear ratio apparently in reverse.

    • @oldthaiexpat
      @oldthaiexpat 10 месяцев назад +1

      Accelerator doesn't have to be pushed if the engine is spinning. Reverse will also start the engine. It doesn't use an electric pump it has an engine driven pump. I have the same engine on a 2001 Ford Ranger

    Bugger! We all have those types of weeks (hopefully infrequently). For me its always when lacking sleep and a bit stressed (even if not 100% aware I'm stressed). The jumping def occurs in older cars when just turning ignition and in reverse (even 1st gear in some small cars with really low ratio gearing and fuel in cylinders).
    Your Toyota is in great shape for age and living in a rural/wild west driving environment. Car years are like dog years, its equal to about 60 in human years. The damage is purely cosmetic if you aren't thinking about botox/plastic surgery the car/ute won't be concerned about gracefully aging either (no body image issues). You are right that the older Toyotas are sought after and known for being bullet proof in most ways (old UK Top show, showed how indestructible many years ago).
    Looking forward to the next, hopefully uneventful (in a bad way) episode. Keep up the vlogs and sharing James. appreciated 🙏🙏👍👍

  • @kevhall4802
    @kevhall4802 10 месяцев назад +2

    Oh boy
    Its a diesel, they are a high torque low revving engine. Once started they don't stall too easily
    In fact they teach you to do something similiar in 4WD training courses
    If you are going up a steep embankment and stall or stop and want to reverse back down safely you do the following:
    Handbrake on, put the car in reverse gear, release the handbrake so that the gearbox grabs ( car still stationery), then with the clutch out, and car in reverse gear, turn the key to crank the engine, and when if starts let it idle in reverse down the hill. It will crawl down backwards safely without you using the brakes and risking locking up the wheels & sliding down in an uncontrolled manner.
    So your diesel pickup works as designed which is amazing for 400k kms - unfortunately it was pilot error old chum !
