Great video! I like how you did it the OEM way, I did my Ranger the same way and it's worked flawlessly for the last seven years since I did the swap. It's my most favorite thing I've done to the truck and the single reason why I've kept the truck for eleven years now.
Thanks Yeah honestly best mod I’ve also done… 👌 It’s so much better now towing my trailer and fun around town! I’m definitely not getting rid of this truck!
@@sylvesterho5810 most likely it’s the PATS system. Google it and see if that fits with your vehicle? If you swapped the computer you might need to prof your key.
Nice work! Enjoying your channel as I prepare to overhaul my 2003 FX4 Level II, which already has this manual t-case/transmission setup... but I watched this vid anyway just to learn more about the components.
@@RangerShop1 I wasn't even in the market for another truck, but it popped up on Facebook Marketplace when I was looking for a part for my '02 FX4 automatic, and I jumped on it because they just didn't make very many manual/manual models, as you know. Once this one is ready to go I'll be selling my '02. The '03 needs timing chains/cassettes but the engine hadn't blown up so valves etc should all be fine.
Excellent! I drove over an hour to buy a "5-speed" FX4 Level II Ranger with 265,000 miles. I am driving it and cleaning up as I go. I would like switch over to manual hubs at some point. I haul a lot of wood and thought the Super Charger would be a decent power upgrade and give the added torque needed for heavy loads.
That sounds like a great truck! I love my 5speed it’s one of the best upgrades I did. The supercharger is a really nice bonus, you would immediately notice the difference. I no longer downshift for hills on the highway. 👌👍
Hmmm I honestly don’t know…. do you know if it’s the same transmission as the SOHC? I have a feeling the bolt pattern is different but I really don’t know. Sorry it’s not really helpful
When you look at the transmission on the driver side you should see a drain near the bottom at the back, the fill is about in the middle 3/4 way up the transmission. The plugs are large with a hex head. Hope that helps a bit 👍
@@RangerShop1 I have some more questions for you about the manual conversion I recently did one on my truck and I can’t get it to start if pls reply to my comment and If we can talk through insta
Are you still active on your videos I have a couple questions anyway you can answer them I am currently in the process of doing this and almost done just wondering if I’m missing something
My 1998 ranger was 2wd automatic i’m swapping 4x4 manual already done all the hard work to swap the harness computer and everything else. The only problem I’m having is the fuel pump will not kick on it cranks has all bells and whistles just a fuel pump will not kick on. Not sure if you had any problem with that maybe there is a computer in the back that’s vin decoded?
@@brandonburkett7108 Right on… sounds like a good swap. To me it sounds like a PATS problem. It’s the ford anti theft system. It kills the fuel pump if it fails to recognize the key….. like if someone in hot wiring it. Did the computer you installed have pats…. If so does your 98 Have PATS? I believe it was optional during that time….. your best bet might be to find a computer without pats? If you got both computer and truck with it you might just need a program. Call up a lost your key guy he can program the new computer to accept your old pats module. Hope that helps 👍
So what I have found out was that the cluster needed to be changed out. The cluster from my truck wasn’t responding to the new computer therefore the silent alarm was on not allowing my fuel pump nor injectors to fire.
What do u think of the possibility of a 2wd to 4x4 with a torsion bar 08 sport as it’s has the 4x4 frame and suspension cv axels and spindles are bolt up same with transmission have to get one from a year with 4x4 output shaft longer on the 4x4 trans one part I’m stuck as is what transfer case can I use and driveshafts obviously a manual t case is the most simple I’m thinking one out of a explorer because they are very similar trucks and have a manual t case
Hmmm that’s a tough one. I’m not sure there is a direct bolt in manual t-case other then the 2002,2003 Fx4 level 2…. Also I’m not sure if the computer speed reading comes from the rear diff or t-case but that might effect it as well. When I swapped mine I used the doner transmission, t-case, wiring harness and computer
hello friend, the manual transfer case is the original of that year?, I have a 1993 ranger with an electronic transfer case, I have never seen a manual transfer case where I live! Great!
I have an 04 automatic 3 ltr. Flex fuel. Won't the automatic be alright for off road? I heard that the automatic is just as good as the manual or are you converting because the manual is cheaper for future overhauls .Also are you planning to install a snorkel to the intake manifold? My ranger is pretty clean it has 153 grand mileage and since I've owned it I have never flushed the transmission. Someone warned me that if I flush it and change the filters and such it may ruin the trani. Is that true or is he jerking my chain? Any help is appreciated. I'm not a mechanic like you but I mostly do all my own maintenance because I don't trust shops not to rip me off. I have replaced much of my front end ball joints and such. One last question do you think differential lockers are worth it on 2 wdr. trucks?
I think the best truck for off-roading is what ever truck you have!😄 The auto is a decent transmission it’s actually more heavy duty then the manual.... probably weighed twice as much when I removed it, but to make it into a good reliable transmission it needs a few internal updates done.... if your trans is shifting ok then personally I’d just leave it. I do a ton of solo camping way in the bush and miles from cell service, I just didn’t trust my transmission so that’s why I replaced mine. I’d definitely get the transmission flushed then if I was you I’d drop the pan and install a new filter.... I’d do that every 60k miles or 100k Km’s biggest killer of auto trans is heat.... once you cook your transmission a few times with burnouts, pulling things etc it breaks down the fluid then you will get slippage in your clutches, bands etc. As for locker it will help but our trucks are so light in the rear you might get further just throwing in a few sand bags etc to add some weight. I’m not that familiar with adding lockers to a two wheel drive though..... Hope that helps a bit.
That’s tough…. If it always vibrates then it’s probably something out of balance on the engine or transmission… like a flywheel. If it only vibrates when driving maybe a drive shaft. If it’s a u-joint you can usually control the vibration with the gas… or letting off the gas. You can feel it flutter. It’s complicated explaining by text. I’d recommend taking it into a mechanic so they can just take a look at everything. Make sure nothing is coming apart.
Im a mecánico lol... It vibrates when i drive or when Is on para. I took the flywheel to the shop but It still has the vibration. Could It be the front crankshaft pole ?
No, but you don't have to worry about a shift solenoid failing. Also, if for some reason (troubleshooting/diagnosis) you wanted to disconnect both the front and rear driveshafts from the transmission, you can do so by putting the manual transfer case in neutral.
Yeah I like eliminating electric moving parts. Now I know exactly when it’s in 4x4 and 4lo. Before I would always pack a transfer case shift motor with me when wheeling..... not anymore 😄👍
Hi. Did you not put in the clutch position sensor in. Also did your donor truck have electric windows. I’m finding most manual trucks don’t have automatic windows and I’m thinking that the windows tie into the ecu. Thanks for your input.
Thank you for posting this video! I am considering buying a mint, low-mileage 96 Explorer but it has an auto and that simply will not do! 👎 I would like to do the manual-swap as well, perhaps going to a manual transfer-case too. Do you know how many parts are interchangeable with the Ranger? I know the transmissions are the same (Ranger 5-speed = Explorer 5-speed) but the Explorers came with the control-trac 4WD system. I don't want to buy the truck and then find out that the conversion is a nightmare. I've found quite a bit of information about doing the manual-swap on a 1st-gen Explorer but not a lot concerning the 95-01 trucks.
Hmmm that’s a tough one. The things id be concerned about is where does that year of explorer get it’s speed readings from? From the rear diff or t-case? Would the t-case from a ranger be the same, send the same signal? I’m not sure…. A manual t-case would eliminate a lot of hassle trying to wire in the shift motor and 4x4 control module. I remember there were some manual explorers but i think they are quite rare and I’m not sure if they are 4x4. Sorry I can’t be more help!
@@RangerShop1 Thank you for the quick response! I've seen the speed reading concern mentioned before, so I will look into that further. The first-gen Explorers seemed to have more in common with the Rangers. By Gen-2, Ford put the Control-Trac system into the Explorers (with all of the associated electronics), differentiating the 4WD system from the more basic set-up in the Ranger. I am looking to create a fairly capable 4x4 and am not really looking for all the bells and whistles. I will probably pursue a 1st-gen Explorer instead. Hopefully I can find one without a lot of rust and other issues! Finding a 5-speed truck would be great, but I think they sold like 8 of them!
This is so awesome! I have a 2011 ford ranger fx4, and I wanna do this swap. So what about the computer of the automatic transmission? Do you have to change anything about that because of the manual transmission? And what about the clutch reservoir being placed?
I have to say I’m not 100% sure with the 2011…. since it’s probably got a few more computer controls on it. For me everything was pretty much just swap and plug it in. I swapped all the harness and computer along with the transmission. Just grab everything you can from the donor vehicle. So far it’s working great and I love having a standard. I love it!
