- Can Russia's S-500 Really Shoot Down an F-22, F-35 or B-2 Stealth Bomber - Russia’s fearsome new S-500 air and missile defense system has apparently entered production-and is setting new records for missile engagement range.
The next generation weapon is designed to supplement Moscow’s already potent S-400 and replace the A-135 anti-ballistic missile system. Not only does the weapon have unprecedented capability to hit high altitude targets-including ballistic missiles and satellites-at extremely long ranges, there have been some claims-usually from the media-that the system could target stealth aircraft. However, while some analysts believe that might be theoretically possible, there has been nothing to substantiate that claim.
What is definitively known about the S-500 is that it is of very high priority to Russian president Vladimir Putin and that it presented publicly as primarily a high-altitude defense system. "It is necessary to develop and build up technological groundwork in the area of air defense, to continue modernization of Pantsir systems, to finish the development and preparations for mass production of the S-500 newest systems capable of hitting targets at super-high altitudes, including near-the-earth space," Putin said in May.
While not all aspects of the S-500’s capabilities have been known to have been demonstrated by the West, there is little reason to doubt the capabilities of Russian air defense systems. Indeed, according to U.S. defense sources, Moscow recently conducted a record-breaking test of the S-500 system at ranges that were previously thought to be impossible. According to a CNBC report citing U.S. intelligence officials, “the S-500 surface-to-air missile system successfully struck a target 299 miles away, which the U.S. assessed is 50 miles further than any known test.”
The CNBC report suggests that the missile used to hit the target was a version of S-300V4’s long-range heavy NPO Novator 9M82MD missile, which has a range of 250 nautical miles and a speed of about Mach 7.5 (It also has light missile with a range of 80 nautical miles). However, it is more likely that the missile in question is a derivative of the 250 nautical mile range 40N6 missile used on the S-400-which has been reported in the Russian media. In either case, the fact remains that the S-500 has demonstrated exceptional capabilities.
As Vladimir Karnozov at Aviation International News reported earlier this year, the S-500 uses several types of missiles. When used against air breathing targets, the S-500 can use the 48N6 family of missiles, which weight about two tons and have an effective range of up to 130 nm (240 kilometers). For longer-range targets, Karnozov reports that the system uses version of the 40N6 with higher performance. It also employ the shorter range and lighter weight 9M96 and 9M100 family missiles, which weigh 530 pounds (240 kg) and upwards.
Against ballistic missile threats-and apparently with a secondary capability against air targets-the S-500 uses the 77N6-N and 77N6-N1 kinetic kill missiles. The missiles are capable of hitting their targets at 7 kilometers per second, which the Russians expect would be sufficient to destroy any incoming aerial target including satellites. It apparently has the capability to engage targets as high as 124 miles-or 200 km or 656,000 feet- at ranges of 324 nautical miles or 600km. It can engage as many as 10 incoming ballistic missiles simultaneously and has a response of less than 4 seconds.
There are some reports that the S-500 can engage stealth aircraft including the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter or any other low observable platform for that matter. The Russians claim that the system can engage over the horizon and can be plugged into an air defense network-to include satellites.
"It is safe to say already now that Russia has created the world's first multi-stage air defense system, that will reliably protect the country from massive missile strikes," Zvezda TV station stated. "The S-500 will analyze information about a possible missile attack obtained by early warning satellites and over-the-horizon radars, such as the Voronezh, as well as select targets, in terms of their importance, cut off false targets at a great distance, accompany all this and finally issue target designations to various systems."
Given the S-500’s advanced networking capabilities, some military analysts have suggested that the Russians might genuinely be able to engage stealth aircraft. Indeed, by networking multiple high-speed long wave radars such as the RLS Voronezh-DM and 1L119 Nebo SVU, it might be possible to generate a weapons quality track on an aircraft such as the F-22 or F-35. Sensor fusion has afforded militaries many capabilities that are greater than the sum of their part. This many be one such case.
Simple fact: In 1999 US famous super-expensive, state of the art, invisible F117 was shot down in Yugoslavia (territory of today's Serbia) with the technology from the '70s.

You do realise that in the case of war they wont just straight uo send planes and get them shot down, first you must destory the missle launch sites, that can be done in many ways but most probably by launching a tomohawk from an submarine or ship, you will can many tomahwas actually because the russian most likely have anti missle defences. Russians have finally managed to develop a kinetic kill interceptor. You know, the kind that destroys the incoming missile with a direct hit and not with a warhead with a proximity fuse. This is an incredibly advanced technology since you have to hit an incoming target, which usually travels at hypersonic speed, with a kinetic warhead that is also travelling at hypersonic or high supersonic speed. This has been compared to hitting a flying bullet with another bullet.
That being said I have to mention that the US has developed these kind of interceptors in various systems, over a decade ago. From the ship based Anti ballistic missile SM-3 to the Ground based interceptors to the THAAD systems. They all use a kinetic kill interceptor that impacts an incoming missile at great speeds. US has always developed more advanced ship borne SAM systems (Aegis + Standard family of missiles) while Russia invested more into ground based SAM systems (S-300/400/500)... Especially interesting is the new MOK or Multi object kill vehicle, that will go at the top of the future SM-3 Block IIB missile. This MOK will have a capability to destroy multiple incoming warheads with multiple kill vehicles that will be housed inside the SM-3 missile warhead. The game continues..

I think more realistically it will be a battle between two very good fighting systems, with losses and wins on both sides

For SEAD there would never be (stealth) jets coming anywhere close to such radars & risk the expensive planes.. Just use smart tactics similar to how ukraine sank the moskva ship, like with low flying cruise missiles, radar jamming, decoys etc. Drone swarms could be great too cuz they're much cheaper aircraft as well.

Missile defense makes sense for a country that can afford lots of missile defense missiles as most will be shot at decoys. The US has been turning to lasers as it is cheaper per shot ( a few dollars) tho will still use missiles in case the laser doesn't work and C-ram if that doesn't work.

Russia has already many fixed radar installations capable of detecting american stealth fighters.
The idea of bombarding Russia with stealth Bombers is not even thinkable.
This Video is about a russian SAM device, which also seems to be capable of detecting stealth fighters.
Also well known is the fact that the radar mounted on the SU-35 (N035 Irbis-E) has the incredible range of 400 km (more than double than any american fighter).
Anyway, no russian aircraft, as far as I know, is capable of easily detecting stealth fighters. But the SU-57 has also stealth capabilities (Russia has built 12 pieces). All in all, it's the second biggest army of the world: a respectable enemy for the USA.

The strategy you described is valid onto a single complex but certainly not on Russian soil with fusion of all the defense grid ( interferometry radar and ir detection plus ew systems affiliated).
In fact the only way to deal with those is saturation and hypersonic speed on target ....

Look at how Indian SU30MKIs equipped with Israeli jamming pods spoofed AMRAAM C5 back In 2018. Having said that, I agree close in IR is going to be the main problem.
That is why the Americans are worried and have banned the supply of their invisible vehicles to Turkey (Turkey has the S-400). Japanese and Israeli invisible men are prohibited from flying near the S-400, as well as in Europe near Russian Kaliningrad. But the Russians have a complex system like Aegis. It was modified. The commander of that missile battery explained how it was done. It was a special set of circumstances that led too the f117 being downed.
They had fucking spies at the US airbase they knew flight details direction and time jet would over fly the area ...the Americans got sloppy and the missile commander got lucky...

Serbia had low frequency radars, they saw everting, problem no possibility to shot down because missing rockets. and they could destroy Serbian radars and defense system from each direction. really difficult to react. don't tell the stories, it does not exist fantom airplans. and for you info all new china and russia system are made on its technology. question: why doesn't fly f117 after it anymore. that was last flight of f117 airplanes. you can check it

Imali smo neku vežbu u kasarni, dolazio je neki Britanski general. Tražio je, čim je došao, da ga odvedu u trofejnu sobu i pokažu mu delove F117. I to sav je bio nešto hepi fazon, osmeh, srdačno rukovanje, maniri oni njihovi,... Jedan ga starešina naš potapšao po ramenu i rekao mu, prvo da vidite ovo. Odveli ga u sobu sa slikama naših poginulih vojnika i starešina.

For some reason we ALWAYS over rate the other guys weapons systems. Good example would be the Mig-25 in the Mid 70's. We painted it as 10' tall and bullet proof. Then we got our hands on one and it turned out to be basically a cobbled together platform that kind of sort of worked.
Yes, we over rate all the other guy's weapon, until we experience first hand that it was not over rated.

@@petesy03 Sorry to say if you look at the now "Present Russian Economy", they simply don't have the cash to field a first world military. Right now almost EVERY ship they have is a refitted late 80's or early 90's platform. Do the math on that alone, they are 30+ years old. Their training is lax, look at all the incidents at sea they have had over the past 10 years alone, most are attributed to poor training. Yep we have problems, most are STUPID management within the system but that can be fixed much quicker with simple substandard Evaluations and discharge papers for these officers. Then in the Russian Navy they haven't really been to sea for the past 30 years other than a few weeks at most a year, sorry you have a huge experience hole in the chain of command. Now couple that with cobbled on new weapons and lack of experience and training you can see problems arising.
