It is incredible the lack of maturity these issues are approached with. It is not a matter of supporting one side or another, it is a matter of understanding what may happen if a conflict breaks out because then it will be of paramount importance. Since clever people exist everywhere in the world, the only sure thing is that each side will be in for surprises. There is no invincible technology or tactic, they are introduced, peak and the they are replaced by something else. In a war this process is incredibly accelerated. NO side should be confident to have any form of superiority.
The S400 missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.

You missed one important option for Patriot - SkyCeptor missiles. SkyCeptor are similar to the Stunner missiles used in Israel and their development is related. They are not quite identical but have similar size and range. Poland opted for SkyCeptor instead of PAC-3MSE because they are vastly less expensive while still highly capable. Poland uses the other PAC-3 components such as command and radars, just with these different interceptors. When comparing systems, this option should be noted.

A lot of speculation. We do know for sure that Russian missile systems are deadly against commercial transport aircraft that don't know they are under attack.
That is TOR operated by morons. I've read about the Serbian Officer whose team took down F-117 and one F-16 during the Kosovo war. He said that only the biggest morons would be able to take down a commercial jet, because it's shown as as such on the radar, and it's obvious even for older such systems it is, not to mention they carry transponders. The plane also took off from Teheran, i.e. it was not spotted near the border, making the whole thing even stupider. It is not the system's fault it's operated by morons
@Adecodoo Also, TOR is not modern system in any way, but it still wouldn't make the mistake of mixing a commercial jet with a fighter one, since way older Russian systems (which were used in shooting down f-16 and f-117) did not make such mistakes
@Adecodoo So explain why the Iranians thought an attack was coming from their airport. In 1988, the perceived attack was coming from a hostile direction and the plane involved had a similar radar signal as an F-14 and there was confusion as to which radio frequency it was using, the pilot ignored the repeated warnings. The Iranian should not have sent a commercial plane into an area where they were engaging in small boat attacks. The Aegis is much upgraded from 32 years ago as most weapon systems have been also. Just consider what your PC was like 32 years ago compared to what you have now.
The analysis in this video has to be among the best a civilian could get without being an actual military contractor. Great job. Video sum up: Effective range and lethality: we don't know Effectiveness against stealth: we don't know Price: we don't know Is it the best SAM: we don't know
Very Low Observable, yes, at close range. But beyond 20 to 30 miles . . . The F-35, F-22, and B-2 bomber are completely invisible to radar. The B-1B bomber is slightly stealthier than the SU-57, but by American standards, we do not consider it a "stealth" aircraft.
@@RedRider1600 i work with radar equipments. all of the aircraft u mentioned can be spotted with radar but it is just on & off depending on the angle of the aircraft. Radar bands, type & size/power also a factor. a small military radar on an aircraft might miss signature but a huge powerful radar definitely able to detect return signature of those aircrafts.
@@2ndkombat Not even huge powerful radar can detect true stealth aircraft, like the F-35 beyond 20 or 30 miles. Unless you are talking about low frequency radars, that are too large to fit on ships and aircraft, and definitely too large to fit on missiles. . . The strength of a radar signal itself has little to do with stealth detection. But the problem with low frequency radars, besides being massively too big, is that they are too inaccurate and too imprecise to use for targeting and precise tracking. They are large, usually immobile targets, that could be detected from hundreds of miles or thousands of miles away, and would be destroyed at the start of a war. The more powerful the radar is, the easier it is to detect and destroy them. We already know where they all are.
It's been proven to be ineffective against low flying cruise missiles, like the Tomahawk. And most likely ineffective against stealth aircraft. It's never shot down a single true stealth aircraft, not even in it's development and testing.
As a system I'm sure its very capable. The problem with very large high speed long range missiles is that they will be relatively easy to detect and track (using a variety of different technologies). At very high speeds the missile won't be very manoeuvrable, which will make it relatively easy to evade by a small fighter target. We also don't know if US AESA radars will be able to jam the seeker head either. I suspect the system using the smaller high speeds missiles is likely to be more effective. However, that assumes F-35 would attack at latitude to user GPS/Laser guided bombs. These days they are more likely to be using smart self guided stand-off glide weapons or missiles. Other aircraft are likely to adopt low altitudes to seek to use land cover. Before any strike package arrives, the US would certainly used F-35 pr F-15 based extend range HARM missiles to degrade the S-400 radar suite, probably fired from a relatively low altitude or behind the radar horizon using targeting data from other high altitude F-35 or AWACS/ELINT systems. We also have no idea how effective onboard ECM systems are either. As you say, the fundamental problem with countering stealth fighters is the accuracy and effectiveness of the targeting radar(s).
when usa invaded iraq they used decoy drones to make the iraq s 200 systems waste their missiles . they flew in 200 drones past the s 200 and made them shoot it down on purpose while they were focusing on them the b2s hit them taking them out . not a single aircraft was shot down but that was the older system not s400 the f 35 is designed to control 11 drones at once with its headset as decoys
@@r.p5380 The s400 kills stealth fighters by the hundreds. If there is one in theater it will consume the enemy with fire balls from its eyes and lightning from its arse.
@@apollo-eu4fk Its not the same. Iraq used the S200 as a single system and not part of a larger anti air group as the russians. Wasting missiles against drones is a pretty novice mistake or born from desperation if no other, more capable system in present to deal with the drones.
Great video. S-400 is indeed probably the best missile system in the world, but it suffers from the same issue as any other SAM, it's ground based and not that good on its own. Even with the mast radar, Earth is round and you can't see past 40-50 km against low flying targets (and that's supposing flat terrain, that said, putting it on a mountain can also help against this). And 40-50 km is well within the range of a HARM or many other ground attack missiles, which makes the system vulnerable if it's not part of an integrated defense system as a few attacking aircraft can just approach low, peek over the horizon, launch a salvo of several missiles, go low again, turn around and leave. So, probably the best, but limited for being just a SAM. So I'd think that it wouldn't work well near the frontlines where such low flying attacks against it are possible, but it would be better in the rear where other units can cover against this, and the S-400 can defend against medium to high altitude attacks.
@@jonathangant251 In order for the S-400 Surface-To-Air Missile System to do that, it has to emit an active radar pulse. That makes it vulnerable to the AGM-88 HARM Missile. @@southtexasprepper1837 Yes,but combine it with 5th generation jets. They can strike targets with impunity, and more cost effective than HARMs,and much easier to make than cruise missiles, and fighter jets can carry more of them.If you launch HARMs too early,a modern SAM simply powers down its radar and starts moving and you wasted missiles, see Yugoslavia ,The trick with stealth is imo, that modern SAMs can track, and shot down a stealth plane. The real question is at what range can a SAM track a stealth plane, probably less than 100 kilometers if i pessimistic, and less than 50 kilometers if i am optimistic, combine that with an SDB,which is a hard target itself, and cheap, and you've got a very good challenge for SAM operators. Numerous small targets, in quick succession, instead of 2-8 targets.Plus SDBs do not care if the radar is powered down. The S-350 is a direct answer for the F-35 in that regard,it has more missiles(12 / launcher vs 4/launcher), quicker to deploy and leave firing position, and has active radar homing missiles, meaning it has fire-and-forget capabilities, and its locator can see 360°,against the S-400 90°.
Not to be an asshole or anything, but 360 degree tracking on a long range SAM is the biggest thing since whooptee doo. Unless you are afraid of your own airforce attacking you, you only need to look at your borders.
Thankfully US Army has finally selected a new radar for the Patriot system. This new radar, made by Raytheon, is, of course, an AESA type radar, but more importantly it has a 360 degree coverage. Other data are not available since they're classified but it's fairly certain to presume that the sensitivity and the anti jamming capability are significantly improved too. As far as S-400 is concerned, I won't be an asshole here and claim that our stealthy fighters and bombers would penetrate the ground covered by the S-400 like nothing. But that being said I have to point out that USAF has been intensively practicing and war gaming, tactics, procedures and weapons used, to counter these modern SAM systems. Let's just hope we will never have to find out whose side bet on the wrong horse. Us with the offensive doctrine with stealthy strike assets, or their side with strong defensive doctrine using more capable SAM systems. That being said I have no doubts that the US Army could develop and field SAM systems that are more capable, even than the future S-500 system. That confidence comes from the fact that our Navy uses the most advanced SAM system in the world - Aegis with SM family of missiles together with the ESSM. The latest Aegis system combined with the coming SPY-6 radar is the only system in the world, naval or land, that can perform ballistic and anti air mission in the same time. All that could be copied and developed for the Patriot replacement. Since that would cost billions of $ and we are in the midst of a comprehensive modernization process, priorities must be developed first. From the nuclear overhaul (GBSD, Columbia class submarines and LRSO missile), to the Next gen air dominance fighter jet, to B-21 Raider and finally a complete overhaul of the US Army's long range firepower. From the longer range howitzer technology to the Precision strike missile meant to replace ATACMS and finally the plethora of different hypersonic systems that are being developed... Priorities, priorities...
@Anton Smirnov it shot an f117, not with its own radar but with a radar complex around serbia, but did you forget that that plane alone put several hundreds of bombs into Belgrade before it was shot down, and it was shot down via a predictable routine, Serbian spotters in Italy, and lastly, too poor of the weather for fighter escorts and Prowlers (the plane that jams radar)

Since the Vietnam war the US has been able to destroy the best Russian SAM missiles on the ground before they can launch, simply by homing a missile on the SAM's tracking radar which is visible when switched on. The more powerful the radar the easier for a missile to lock on to it and the S-400 has a very big signature, certainly more than an attacking aircraft firing a small stand-off anti-radiation missile.
honestly i think russia would be saturated with SAM's, as their home is much more important then vietnam was, to try and force a situation where a destroyed S-400 is avenged by multiple more next to it. It’s definitely one of if not the best in the world. I’m not sure I buy the official line of an engagement range against stealthed aircraft of 150km, this seems optimistic. However against conventional aircraft and cruise missiles the S-400 is absolutely deadly with a kill probability of 90% and considering current Russian doctrine (also US doctrine) states that anything worth shooting one missile at is worth shooting two to ensure a kill means the S-400 would put paid to anyone. Current US doctrine against S-400 and similar advanced SAMs are to locate them ahead of time with satellite or drones and then perform a saturation attack on each missile battalion radar emitter using cruise or ballistic missiles at stand off ranges. By saturation attack I mean determining how many missiles a S-400 battalion can intercept simultaneously and then firing that amount +1, which is a very American way to wage war (we beat you over the head with our wallets.) As an aside that is also the current Chinese doctrine against the US Navy in the Pacific - if we were to go to war with China they have a pretty good idea how many anti-ship cruise or ballistic missiles a carrier battle group can shoot down at once so their plan is simply to fire more than that from coastal batteries. It’s a good plan and there really isn’t any defense against it.
Cant fighter jets and bombers also fire AS missles?not just coastal batteries?oh and can a surveillance plane guide missiles launched from other systems?
elia haj yes. As far as a surveillance plane, not really. Maybe an AWACS could depending on the datalink capability and the missile’s capability, though. But probably not, even then. Being able to redirect a missile in flight is the same as being able to hack a missile in flight, potentially. Most anti-ship cruise missiles function like this: give it a location (or the oldest ones a heading and distance) and a targeting priority for its terminal guidance radar/sensors, like biggest ship or first contact or for modern ones might have an internal database of ship types, then it goes into seek and destroy mode based on the programming once it gets near the location you programmed in. As far as the coastal batteries it’s because the longest range antiship missiles China has, especially their new ballistic one, can’t be fired from an aircraft. They’ve also got really old and cheap antiship cruise missiles that are too large to fire from aircraft (silkworms) but they have so many of them it’s suitable to mass fire them. Short range anti ship missiles can be fired from their J10s though, so you could expect a mass of J10s doing the same thing but essentially just acting as the first stage, albeit a reusable one, of antiship missiles.
Michael Munson this is also Iran’s doctrine against the 5th fleet in the Gulf. Saturation attacks using shore, ship, fast attack craft, drones, subs, and mines. Ballistic missiles saturation attacks concurrently on the airbases and army bases in the region. So basically thousands of munitions all fired with minutes of each other. America wouldn’t stand a chance.
@@SpiraSpiraSpira yeah and what's also interesting is that in the falkland war the British had a "modern anti air missile that can intercept anti ship missiles sea viper is its name?"but when fired in a salvo to portect a cargo ship(6 missiles maybe)against two exocet missiles they all miss, only one case I know of AS missile being intercepted, not to mention that 20 aircraft shot down way more arg aircraft than all of the escorting destroyers and did most of the bombing on argentinean air bases so destroyers start to feel useless from the start for me not to mention that china would have more aircraft than those on all of the US carriers,I cant 8magine a non nuclear war between the two countries actually happening.
Jay Whoisit Jay Whoisit I am very skeptical of their ability to pull that off. US surveillance would see the preparatory steps and once it became clear of Iran’s intentions the US would preemptively strike. The US wouldn’t let Iran wind up for a sucker punch like that. China has the advantage in that their military is more or less ready to strike like that quickly. The Persians have a good military, especially Air Force, but their state of preparedness is nowhere near pulling off a concurrent attack like you describe without telegraphing it ahead of time IMHO. Pretty solid review. One thing you missed is that both S-300 and S-400 are parts of what is called "echeloned air defence" which means that sites would be covered not only by long range S-300/400 but with mid and close range systems as S-350, Buk, Tor, Pancir. That's speaking about number of available interceptors.
Same as any system, it needs competent and constant upkeep to perform at full capacity, which it often doesn't get. Reminds me of a story about a Phantom pilot in Vietnam who had far mroe success than others with SRAAMs when they were first introduced because he knew the systems and did his own upkeep on them.
@@badmoose01 keep also in mind that the s400 dont have missiles to do half of the claims and Russian radar technology is decades behind. So if they can't see it, they can't shoot it!

Its all comes down to WHO is operating the system: Are they current on their training and maintenance? Are the logistics systems for spare parts functioning as intended? And a whole slew of other questions as well. In the end effect its up to the personnel and of which quality they are. Case in point: my beloved M1 Abrams proved to be easy meat in Yemen for the rebels. It is without a doubt a capable system, but the crews weren't up to the task. But the U.S. has been practicing with their stealth aircraft against their own world-class radar systems for decades. Without knowing information on either side, we can still safely assume U.S. stealth aircraft are more effective in actual combat than is the Russian equipment which has never tested their systems against advanced U.S. stealth, or if they did, it's very limited in time and access.
I don't think anyone can claim the S-300/S-400 is not the best system. Is it good enough to protect against the best stealth jet, that depends very much on the situation. If used in the standard setup shown above with the missiles approaching the stealth target from the front and with the stealth jets knowing what they are approaching, likely not. But think about a scenario where the defender knows that stealth might be used and does some of the following things to ambush the attacker. 1. A Targeting radar + missile truck is hidden like 60 miles closer then the seeker radar, towards the border. When the seeker radar sees the jets the targeting radar will turn on and will now engage the jets from the side/below/behind where the jets are not as stealthy. 2. When engaging stealth, the missiles are programmed to fly up super high first, before trying to engage and will now be tracking the planes from a downward angle, where the jets are also less stealthy (this will cost range, but as they already know a stealth jets will not be engaged at 400km+ it has extra fuel to spend). I think in the end it comes mostly down to who is best prepared on the day and can trick the enemy.
Just as I suspected. The huge number of missiles many sources say the S-400 can launch never account for what kind of small shorter range variants that are being used. 40N6 is impressive still, but not at the high volume everyone claims. Thanks for all the research you commit to doing!

That is TOR operated by morons. I've read about the Serbian Officer whose team took down F-117 and one F-16 during the Kosovo war.
@Samim Taheri in any case, not any fault of the system itself
@Adecodoo 32 years ago.

Unless you are talking about low frequency radars, that are too large to fit on ships and aircraft,

The strength of a radar signal itself has little to do with stealth detection.
But the problem with low frequency radars, besides being massively too big, is that they are too inaccurate and too imprecise to use for targeting and precise tracking.

@@Zappina You don't know if it's a decoy or not if they are then you get exposed if they aren't they bomb you
Great video.

The AGM-88 HARM Missile has a operational range of 150 kilometres; 92 miles (80 nmi). It has a speed of 2,280 km/h (1,420 mph).
SDBs are better imo than HARMs,S-400s never works alone, smaller SAMs(Pantsir, Tor) guarding them against precision guided weapons.Planes can launch more SDBs than HARMs to overpower SAMs.Imo S-400 is mediocre, just like Patriots , because it requires too much baby sitting to remain effective.Too static.S-350s represents future SAMs much better.Very mobile, hard to find, good but not insane range.
@@vindicare9636 SDBs have an operational range of about 60 miles (110 km). If it's my choice, I'll choose HARMs. Let the Iranians turn their radars on and get a pretty present. BOOM! If all else fails, use a Cruise Missile.

4: 00 - is Binkov having a stroke?
Good job on getting us solid info and a good comparison Binkov

The more powerful the radar the easier for a missile to lock on to it and the S-400 has a very big signature, certainly more than an attacking aircraft firing a small stand-off anti-radiation missile.
fair comment, but anti-radar missiles in today's ultra-saturated radar field will be lost and will not be able to operate effectively.
honestly i think russia would be saturated with SAM's, as their home is much more important then vietnam was, to try and force a situation where a destroyed S-400 is avenged by multiple more next to it. Thought that will also depend on how much both side's radar and everything else has improved, which civilians like us will not have any access to such information, and how the newest classified missiles work, what their range is, etc

Utter nonsense. They just send stealth drones to map out their SAM locations with passive radar. And they have actually zero chance of detecting it until it's like 50 km away. While broadcasting there location out to 400km. Than simultaneously launch Stealth Anti-radiation radiation missiles at each Radar location they found. They are really small fly low and slow and it is too late by the time they detected one. They can also launch 2,400Km 3D thrust vectoring missiles, or mach 20 hypersonic glide vehicles ground-based SAMs are ineffective at stopping stealth fighters. Russia deployed them just in case, shooting down an airplane is an act of war
By saturation attack I mean determining how many missiles a S-400 battalion can intercept simultaneously and then firing that amount +1, which is a very American way to wage war (we beat you over the head with our wallets.)
As an aside that is also the current Chinese doctrine against the US Navy in the Pacific - if we were to go to war with China they have a pretty good idea how many anti-ship cruise or ballistic missiles a carrier battle group can shoot down at once so their plan is simply to fire more than that from coastal batteries.
But I might be wrong, and you are correct in that is their plan. That’s what a US Marine general used when he was the OPFOR commander playing a Iran-like Force in a famous war game a couple decades ago, and it worked exactly how you describe: ruclips.net/video/g9b1DG86a4k/видео.html

It's a question that can't be answered because it has never been used in actual combat.

No weapon effectiveness can be answered easily
