One year with this lens doing photography and now reasearching to do video content. Found your video, spot on. What a crazy run and gun lens. Great video!
@@armando.visuals wrong bro, because its physically impossible to make something like that without it being huge. Look at the sigma lenses at 2.8… massive!
Hey, what a surprise to see you here reviewing a camera lens! I'm following your posts about guitars, gear etc. Like them very much. I also play the guitar and like to spend my time making pictures, Greetings from the Netherlands, Alexander
Excellent video Shane! I have this lens and it's awesome. Even after owning a half dozen other lenses for both my Sony and Panasonic cameras, I still turn to this focal length when I need one lens only that is flexible and reliable for pretty much anything. I also love the Panasonic 24-105 F4 on my S5 cameras!
Settled on this as my first lens for my backordered FX3. Want something I could use for road trip and travel content and this looks like a winner to start. It’s so tough with all the choices because of the pros and cons to everything. I’m thinking of eventually pairing a Tamron 17-28 2.8 for better wide angle and indoor shots but this should make due for a bit!
Just discovered your channel when looking into Yolobox. I bought the 24-105 when I bought my A7C and it's just perfect for so many situations that it's my goto lens and always attached and just keep a secondary prime F1.8 in the bag just in case. Great videos mate, a new subscriber.
Currently I’ve got the 16-35/4, the 70-200/4 and a couple vintage 50-ish mm’s. So I’m missing that mid range. I’m thinking the 24-105 is going to be my next purchase. I’m also contemplating the sigma 24-70/2.8 but the 24-105 is lighter and it’s got that oss. 🤷♂️🤷♂️😂😂 thanks for the video Shane!!!
The Sigma is a great lens optically, but it's heavy and can suffer from dust issues very quickly. I had it for a day and returned it based on the size. I didn't feel like the 2.8 vs 4.0 was much better for outdoor shooting. Indoors, the 2.8 will be a better choice but the weight is brutal on the Sigma. :)
Great test man. I just bought this lens and got it in today, I do photography and videography, excited to use this lens a ton and focus more on content versus shooting everything at 1.2.
Really great video. I have the 24-105 and use it with my A7iv mostly for photography. But great know this is also a solid lens for video. Thanks Shane!!
I hope >>Sony can release a GM-master version of this lens. The current one is good for A7R3 or olders, but probably no so perfect for A7R4, R5 which has higher pixels.
I'm looking for a new lens for my football videography. One thing I suffer with on my Tamron 70-180 is that when I zoom out from 180 to 70 the lens loses focus of everything, does this lens do that? I think there's a term for it called parfocal 🧐
I can't remember mate, sorry. I ended up selling it a while back due to the size and weight for long handheld work. The AF works great though so if you use autofocus it should adjust pretty quickly when zooming.
No one seems to talk about manual focussing with this lens. Is it the focus by wire system, which absolutely sucks? The 24-70 II has a linear option, for pulling proper focus. wish all Sony lenses had this.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy I did. I caught where you said the focus ring was really sensitive. The images you’ve got here look great but with that focus ring, for my run and gun/reality work where I’m pulling focus constantly it wouldn’t be suitable unfortunately. The 28-135 would be though.
Thanks for the review, Shane. Really surprised how well controlled the focus breathing is. And as a Panasonic owner, I am envious of the AF-C capabilities. Also, thanks for showing everyone that f/4 is BEAUTIFUL and that they don't need to shoot at f/1.4 all the time. Where will you be travelling to next year???
Realistically the only thing Sony has over the Panasonic is the AFC. For that sort of work it's great. There's something a lot more fun about Panasonic cameras in general though especially if you are behind them shooting something else. I still much prefer them overall. I'll be doing a huge road trip in the US all being well for 3 months or so.
I like the versatility of this lens but I find the zoom ring a bit too stiff, making it impossible to zoom while filmning without severely rocking the camera. I'm dreaming of a PZ version...
HELP! =P Cant decide Sony 24-105, Tamron 28-75 G2, Sigma 18-70. Exept for the range, are all these lenses "as good" optically? Im worried that carry around the a7 III + 24-105 will be kind of heavy?
I am struggling so much, I got the 24-70 f/2.8 GM for the same price as the 24-105G OSS so now I have both. But I need to pick one to sell, what would be your advice?
I got the sigma 24-70 2.8 and ended up feeling like this one was a better keeper for my situation. Better reach and stabilisation made more sense than less reach. The background blur between 2.8 and 4 is not that much either.
I use the Canon version of this 24-105 lens with an inexpensive Vello speedbooster/adapter with fantastic results on my A7iii. Amazing low light and all around lens for everyday use. The entire camera and lens is a little heavy at 3.5 lbs but very usable; even on a moderate sized gimbal.
What a good video im thinking of getting this lens soon over the Sony 35mm 1.4 lens because it covers so much more focal length i think its a wonderful lens. One question ive heard its no good for a Gimbal it that because it has image stabilization inside the lens and camera but cant you turn the stabilization off on the lens ? Does that make it impossible to get clean sharp shots? I am no professional just an Amateur Enthusiast . Thanks for the information. RJ. Philadelphia Pa.
I shoot Panasonic on my guitar channel for all of my main shots. I use a mix of the 24, 35, and 50mm F1.8 S Series of Prime Lenses. When I use the Sony for live streams or other purposes - Sony 35mm f1.8 and 24mm GM are my two main lenses. I also sometimes use the 55mm 1.8 Ziess for the product shots.
The GM II will be faster but the 24-105 will be a more versatile lens plus the image stabilisation is awesome. It comes down to whether you need more background blur than F4.
You mentioned that the free Catalyst Browse software downsamples footage from 10 bit to 8 bit. I am having the hardest time researching this and finding out if that is true. Can you or anyone else out there help corroborate this claim? I've been using the software for several years, and I haven't noticed this, but maybe I don't have the eye for it.
Thanks for the useful, awesome review I have a question regarding the filters Do you think i will not need to buy filter to get excellent landscaping shots Thanks
I haven't but I will be borrowing a bunch of stuff this year from them to test including that. My guess is that it'll be pretty comparable to this but the focus ring will feel a lot better on the Panasonic.
I can confirm this. The OSS seems to be useless in "standard mode" of the stabilizer which is the only mode available on the A7III. Interestingly no reviewer does report this issue. It seems that most reviewers use the "active mode" of newer Sony cameras for video which effectively disables the OSS and provides some kind of electronic stabilization by cropping the sensor. This is why "active" mode is so much better than "standard mode" on this lens. The OSS seems to be working for stills only.
Same here. It‘s really worse than any old lens without stabilization when used on the fx3. Used it a lot lately for handheld interviews when the sigma 24-70 was not narrow enough. I just can‘t really hold it still compared to the sigma 24-105 (which i own for canon ef) on a non stabilized camera for example. I thought i just had a lens from a bad batch 😂
Hey Geeky, thanks to share your interesting video. You have a lot of experience and you always give me professional advice and also wise ones. I shoot only documentaries and I need only ONE zoom lens. I know the new Tamron is wonderful but maybe could the Sony give me more stabilization? I thank you for your precious news.

My guitar studio is all Panasonic Full Frame gear. 1x35mm f1.8 and 3x 50mm f1.8. For all the B-roll I shoot Micro Four Thirds for better close focusing and so I can also get more in focus easily.
