  • the sony 24-105mm f4 g lens might be a great all in one lens For Sony mirrorless cameras, but is it still worth it in 2021?
    I purchased a Sony 24 105mm f4 to see if it could handle all my adventures in alaska and how the image quality would hold up in photo and video work. This lens has performed incredibly well on my A7sIII and a7III produces beautiful images and video and makes working in hard environments a lot easier since it really does handle pretty much everything I need for backpacking, traveling and filming my adventures.

    This is the first lens I bought when the A7III came out. Almost 3 years later it is still my go-to lens for travel and studio work. I love primes but can't beat the convenience of this zoom lens when trying to travel light. Great IQ, excellent auto-focus and compact.

    The 24-105 is my go-to lens. Even though others in the same basic zoom range have come along from Sigma, Tamron, and Sony since this lens was first introduced, the 24-105 is my day-to-day and travel lens. To be sure, I'll take a faster, wider-angled lens for sunrise/sunset and landscapes when I need it and a super zoom like the 100-400 for wildlife and areas I know I'm going to need more reach. But, day to day, this is the one on my camera! Excellent lens. Good review!

    This was the 1st lens I bought for my a7iii and it would be the LAST one I'd sell if I was forced too.
    Here's an FYI that may help some . . .I bought a Pelican 1200 hard case and it works PERFECTLY with an a7iii and the 24-105 with the lens hood ON. I used the pick and pluck foam and sprayed it with 'Plasti-Dip' (several coats) once I had cut it to fit . . . If you lay it out smartly, you can cut spaces for a couple extra batteries and a filter (I use a CP filter) fits like a glove ! With this setup, you can toss it in the bed of a truck, bang it around in the bottom of a boat w/o fear of any water getting in . . . it's absolutely full proof. Just pop the latches, pull out the camera and shoot . . . throw it back in and it's SAFE . . . no more fooling around with all the bags, zippers, nonsense etc. . . . plus it's all but crush proof.
    Cheers for a solid review.

Jittering etc. Also in your example in my opinion the IBIS + OSS was better than the IBIS + OSS + Active. Have you noticed anything like that? Also still thinking which would give better stabilization for the video: 1. IBIS + Active (like with the Tamron 28-75) or
    2. IBIS + OSS. (like with the Sony 24-105) ?

    How would you compare it to the Tamron 28-200 you reviewed earlier? It’s smaller and lighter but still much longer tele, it seems for a hiker it would be the better choice. Is the image that much better? Bear in mind, I’m not a pro, all my videos go to RUclips. Will any of my viewers ever see a difference except half the reach? I carry a Samyang 18mm1.8 AF lens for wide shots and blurry background, so I won’t miss the extra 4mm on the wide end. I think that combo is a much better vlogging setup, the Samyang is remarkably sharp for the money. My guess is the two together weigh less than the 24-105. In your helicopter rescue video, wouldn’t you regret not having the 28-200?

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  2 года назад

      I don't think any of the viewers would notice the difference and if you carry around another wide lens then you are good to go. For me only taking one lens and the added benefit of OSS in the lens really made a difference. I still really like the 28-200 and I think its probably the best budget option for an all in one lens out there For Sony E and yes in that specific scenario the 28-200 was the perfect lens with the extra reach. Thankfully I am not involved in those situation every single day lol

    • @CheapRVliving
      @CheapRVliving 2 года назад

      The irony is I have both of them and probably 95% of my RUclips videos are shot on my Smartphone (Samsung s21 Ultra) with ultra wide, normal, 3X and 10X zoom. So it is both wider and longer, all while being incredibly smaller and lighter than either of them. My A7c and A7RIV have pretty much been relegated to specialized personal photo and video shoots, mostly with Primes or the 200-600.

    • @stefpix
      @stefpix 2 года назад

      @@CheapRVliving personally I find 28mm a bit tight for an all around lens. You can crop a photo or a video a bit if you need more reach, and you will not see much difference, you can also upsample with the new Lightroom AI. Yet I ordered the Tamron 18-300 for my Sony crop frame. I also have a Nikon Z5, I may sell the 24-200 and 240-70 f4 and replace both of them with the upcoming 24-120 f4. It depends what you shoot., In nature you can get away with 28mm, but if you photograph a city 24mm is good to have. You can also stitch 3 images together with Lightroom's panorama function, that is pretty good. At the end it depends what you shoot. I think I need a 24mm a lot more often than I need a 200mm. You already have a 200-600. I think the 24-105 has more flexibility than a 28-200. also it has image stabilization, which helps a lot, as Sony IBIS is not very good (unlike Nikon's in body stabilization)

    I purchased it 3 months ago. Back then I only had my good old a6300. What I can say this lens on a crop body is just an average. Stabilisation is great but it drains the battery shockingly fast. Now I have my a7iii and I'm very pleased what I saw this lens can do with strobe light when it comes to portrait photography. Can't wait to get it for a hike and see how it handles landscapes.

    That lens is about the same size as my 24-70mm GM lens. OSS and the extra reach makes this appealing to me. I can give up a stop for OSS since I mainly use it outside and my prime lenses inside. The image quality looks on par with the GM without pixel peeping. I don't think the 24-70 GM is that great honestly when paired to my high MP A1 or A7R4. It's showing it's age. The tamron 28-200 is definitely better in low light and has probably a bit sharper image quality. Hi, congratulations for the very interesting video. I'd like to ask you a question. For me the stabilization of a camera is very important because I make all my 4K documentaries around the world freehand, without tripods and without stadyshot. If I had to buy the Sony A7 IV and the Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS, could the two stabilizations, both of the camera and that of the lens, work together and in synergy? Do you think the Sony A7 IV with Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS might be the right camera for me or is it better that I look to another camera with better stabilization? Thank you very much

  • @Raptorman0909
    @Raptorman0909 2 года назад

    I like to use primes for landscape and architecture but you really should use a tripod to get the sharpest images and if you use a tripod the need for image stabilization is much less. But, when walking around handheld image stabilization is a must so a lens like the Sony 24-105 G gives you a decent FL range with image stabilization and decent optical quality. I will be ordering the new Sony A7 IV soon and this lens is first on the list followed by some Sigma I-series primes. The Sigma I-series primes are not the fastest lenses but they are fast enough for my use and they are relatively small and light making them great for hiking and for use on a gimbal.

      Hey Matti! I’d say if you have the 28-75 you are good to stick with it. What you gain with the 24-105 is the extra width at the wide end and the extra zoom as well as optional image stabilization which helps a lot! I have the 28-75 as well and I’m afraid mine doesn’t see much use anymore even though it is better in low light. If you need extra stabilization I’d say it is worth it. As far as focus breathing yes the 24 1.4 has terrible focus breathing as well but it’s just such a fantastic low light lens.
